A History of the Professionalization of Interior Design: Viewed Through Three Case Studies of the Process of LicensureWhitney, Marilyn Corson 12 December 2008 (has links)
Since the 1950s, interior decoration evolved into interior design. Throughout the 1970s, all of the components for professionalization were in place, but it was not until the 1990s that the final transformation made interior design into a profession. This dissertation documents these changes and posits that is the conflicts inherent in the process of licensure transformed it into a profession.
The transformation of interior design is examined through the lens of the theory of professions, especially Andrew Abbott's delineation of transformation through conflict. The historical case studies of the legislative process were of the District of Columbia, which has practice legislation; the Commonwealth of Virginia; which has title legislation; and the State of Ohio, which has no licensing of interior designers as of 2007. Data collection was by interviews with participants of the process of licensure and with the leadership of the interior design community. In addition, primary and secondary documents examined include books, journals, trade magazines, and documents from professional organizations.
Specifically, this dissertation addresses these questions: Is interior design a profession? If so, what forces transformed interior design into a profession? And, how is interior design different from architecture?
This dissertation posits that interior design is unique from architecture because it developed in home economic programs at state universities during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In this locale, the primary focus of interior design was the micro-environment based on the theory of behavior. This gives students and practitioners a unique viewpoint that allows for the consideration for each end user as integral to the design process. These attributes contribute to the unique qualities of the services interior design offers and separate it from those of architecture.
A simplified definition of interior design that I developed is that interior design utilizes the theory of behavior to design spaces in a micro-environment that function at a safe and efficient level for every end user and are aesthetically pleasing. Finally, interior designers need to understand that the strength of their position in the built environment is in the unique services they offers and celebrate their qualities as outlined in this document. / Ph. Undersökningar påvisar att barns delaktighet i socialtjänstens utredningar är bristfällig (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg, 2014). Barns åsikter beskrivs som lågt prioriterade i förhållande till vuxna (Östberg, 2010). Syftet med studien var följaktligen att undersöka hur socialsekreterare uppfattar barns delaktighet i utredningar där barn misstänkts blivit utsatta för våld i hemmet. Studien har genomförts med en kvalitativ ansats i form av fokusgruppsintervjuer med socialsekreterare. Delaktighetsmodeller och professionsteori utifrån begreppen jurisdiktion samt handlingsutrymme har tillämpats i analysen av empirin. Resultatet visar att det råder en samstämmighet i hur informanterna definierar barns delaktighet, dock har detta en komplex innebörd i praktiken. Informanterna beskriver att metoder kan främja barns delaktighet. Däremot framträder hinder såsom barns ålder, föräldrars inblandning, hög arbetsbelastning och tidsbrist. Vidare synliggörs att socialsekreterarna ser barn som aktiva deltagare i utredningsarbetet. Skyddsaspekten framhävs dock som starkt styrande för barns delaktighet. Föreliggande studie belyser således att det råder både hinder samt möjligheter i det praktiska arbetet gällande barns delaktighet. / Studies show that children's participation in social services inquiries are flawed (Inspektionen för vård och omsorg, 2014). Children's views are described as a low priority compared to adults (Östberg, 2010). The aim of this study was therefore to examine how social workers perceive children's participation in inquiries where children are suspected of being victims of domestic violence. The study has been conducted with a qualitative approach in the form of focus group interviews with social workers. Participation models and theory of professions based on the concepts of jurisdiction and discretion has been applied in the analysis of empirical data. The result shows that there is a consistency in how the informants define children's participation but that it has a complex meaning in practice. The informants describe that methods can facilitate children's participation. However, it also appears that there are obstacles such as the children’s age, parent’s involvement, high workload and lack of time. Furthermore, the study shows that social workers perceive children as active participants in inquiries. However, the protection aspect is emphasized as a main factor for children's participation. This study thus highlights that there are both obstacles and opportunities in the practical work regarding children's participation.

The purpose of this study is to examine and compare librarian profession with different professional theories. The intention is to describe how the librarian profession meets the different professional criteria and to what extent the librarian profession can be said to be professional in expertise, service and autonomy. Nolin’s modern theory provides an opportunity to analyze occupational groups based on professionalized basic concepts. The analysis of relevant material showed that the librarian is a service profession with high skills, but does not hold a high degree of autonomy. Librarian profession has been regarded as a semiprofession by previous profession theories, but Nolin’s broadened profession definition invites the librarian to the profession concept.

It shows a critical reflection on legitimacy as a central determination taken by the different theories of professions, departing from an evaluation constructed on a Marxist base. Thus, it affirms the arbitrary character of legitimacy and it establishes that such discussion is more accurate if considered in its relation to the ideology phenomena. The dissertation also presents an analytical synthesis of main points of the works of José Paulo Netto, Marilda Iamamoto and Vicente Faleiros in the field of Social Work’s foundations. The research remarks the innovative elements of the ideas of such scholars, defending that they can provide the central bases to the understanding of legitimacy in the professional field.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vårdnadsdomar och vårdnadsutredningar från tingsrätt och familjerätt där beslut och förslag till beslut inte är lika. Studien ämnar undersöka på vilket sätt domaren/domarna (juristen) anser sig ha ett bättre beslut i vårdnadsmålen jämfört med familjerättssekreterarens (socionomens) och hur detta kan avläsas i de domar där de två professionerna inte tycker lika. Är det rena juridiska felbedömningar som familjerättssekreteraren har gjort eller är det andra rekvisit och tolkningar som förekommer? Har en domare bättre kunskap att bedöma barns bästa än familjerättssekreteraren? Hur utmärker sig de två professionerna i det skrivna språket kring sitt egna handlingsutrymme? Studien har analyserat domar och vårdnadsutredningar med diskursanalys som metod för att belysa den professionsproblematik som studien syftar till att undersöka. Tre olika vårdnadsfall med tingsrättsdomar och vårdnadsutredningar har granskats. I ett fall finns även en hovrättsdom. De slutsatser som kommer fram i jämförelserna av empirin är att det råder en starkare självsäkerhet hos juristen i handlingsutrymmet kring att utföra sin profession, jämfört med socionomen. Det skrivna språket behandlas på olika sätt och med olika grader av självförtroende och säkerhet i påståenden, beroende på profession. / The aim of this study is to analyse the child custody enquiry with the custody judgements form the family law department and the court when the proposition for resolution and the decision is not concistent. The study aim to examine in what way the judge (lawyer) consider themselves to have a better decision in the family cases than the family law caseworker (the social worker) when the two professions do not agree. Is it the judicial intepretation done by the family law caseworker that is wrong, or is it the necessary prerequisite and other legal opinions which occours in the texts? Does the judge have better knowledge to assess the best interests of children than the family law caseworker? How do the two professions in the written language distinguish themselves about their own space of action? The study has analyzed judgments and custody enquires with discourse analysis as a method of highlighting the professional problem that the study aims to investigate. Three different custody enquires with district court cases have been examined. In one case there is also a judgement from the court of appeal. The conclusions that emerge in the comparisons of the material are that there is greater self-assurance of the lawyer in the action room in pursuit of his or her profession, in comparison with the social worker. The written language is treated in different ways and with different degrees of self-esteem and security in claims, depending on the profession.

Digitaliseringens påverkan på revisorsprofessionen / The effects of digitization on the auditor professionÅkvist, Oliver, Jönsson, Linus January 2022 (has links)
Problemdiskussion: Digitaliseringen är en process som påverkar stora delar av samhället. Tidigare studier har påvisat att digitaliseringen har lett till förändringar av olika professioner, vilka kan beskrivas som yrkesgrupper som uppfyller vissa kriterier. Då revisorer kan betecknas som en profession, kan en undersökning av revisorers upplevelser av digitaliseringen bidra till en förståelse kring hur revisorsprofessionen har påverkats av digitaliseringen. Syfte: Uppsatsens syfte är att bidra med en fördjupad förståelse kring digitaliseringens påverkan på revisorsprofessionen. Metod: Forskningsansatsen som tillämpas är deduktiv, där den teoretiska referensramen ligger till grund för den empiri som samlas in. En kvalitativ studie genomförs genom att intervjua och observera revisorer, för att få en bild av deras upplevelser av digitaliseringen. Slutsats: Studien visar att digitaliseringen på flera olika sätt har påverkat revisorsprofessionen. Kunskapen som krävs har ökat och delvis blivit av annan typ än tidigare, genom ett skifte från kunskaper inom redovisning till dataanalys, vilket tyder på en förstärkning av professionen. Autonomin har till stor del minskat, genom exempelvis fler regler, även om vissa aspekter av den kan sägas ha ökat. Professionens språk har förstärkts genom ökad användning av befintliga begrepp och utökats med nya begrepp kopplade till de digitala verktygen, vilket bidrar till att stärka medlemmarnas gemensamma identitet. Slutligen har de digitala verktygen lett till att arbetet enklare kan presenteras för kunderna, samtidigt som dataanalyser ger kunderna ett högre mervärde, vilket har förstärkt känslan av att det finns ett förtroende hos kunderna. Dock kan en del av förtroendet egentligen ha tilldelats tekniken. Hos övriga delar av samhället kan förtroendet sägas vara ganska oförändrat och i stället bero på uppkomna revisionsskandaler. / Problem: Digitization is a process which affects large parts of society. Previous studies have shown that digitization has led to changes in different professions, which can be described as occupational groups which meet certain criteria. Since auditors can be denoted as a profession, a study of auditors' experiences of digitization can contribute to an understanding of how the auditor profession has been affected by digitization. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a deepened understanding about digitization's effects on the auditor profession. Method: The research approach being applied is deductive, in which the theoretical frame of reference forms the basis for the collected empirics. A qualitative study is carried through by interviewing and observing auditors, to get a picture of their experiences of digitization. Conclusion: The study shows that digitization has affected auditors as a profession in several different ways. The needed knowledge has increased and partly become of a different kind than before, by a change from knowledge in accounting to data analysis, which indicates a reinforcement of the profession. The autonomy has to a large extent decreased, by for example more rules, even if certain aspects of it can be said to have increased. The profession's language has been reinforced by increased use of existing notions and expanded with new notions related to the digital tools, which contributes to strengthening the members' common identity. Lastly, digital tools have made it easier to present the work to the clients, while data analyses have given clients a higher added value, which has strengthened the feeling that there is a position of trust towards the clients. However, parts of the position of trust could in reality have been assigned to the technology. Among other parts of society, the trust can be said to be quite unaltered and instead be dependent on arisen auditing scandals.

The purpose of this study has been to examine and analyze school counselors’ experience of collaboration with other professions in the student health team and the preconditions for their work. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with six elementary-, and two high school student counselors in a medium-sized town in Sweden. The theoretical approach being used is: role theory, theory of professions and theory about collaboration. The study´s result shows that the school counselors’ experience an unclarity in their job assignments and their role is often described as diffuse and vauge. Furthermore, the result also shows that personality, different perspectives, education, lack of time, resources and confidentiality is affecting their possibility to execute an independent professional social work in the student health team. This study also shows that the school counselors valuate collaboration. A opportunity that sometimes is being obstructed through the different perspectives as compared to the other professions in the student health team, and therefore affects their experience of collaboration.

Abstract In recent years, the interest and development of artificial intelligence has been extensive, and society is in the middle of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Given the changes that have occurred, an interest to examine how this has affected the role of the controller arises, considering it is tasks as theirs that AI is now competing with. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand how AI is integrated into the role of the controller and how the surrounding environment influences AI-usage in this context. Hereby, the dynamic relationship between AI, practitioners, and the surrounding environment is considered by examining how technological advancements and human attitudes influence the use of AI. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach, where eleven respondents were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. The two selection groups consisted of actors within ERP systems and controllers. The collected data was analyzed through coding, identifying the following main themes: development, business and economic consequences, tasks, competence and attitude. The analysis of the empirical data was based on an integration of existing research along with the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the theory of professions. The impact of AI was not equally prominent for everyone; however, where it had influence, AI was used as an assistant, working together with the controller to fulfill tasks. Furthermore, an indication of a shift in competence requirements was observed, where technical competence gained increased significance. Additionally, users' knowledge and perception of AI-tools influenced their attitude, with a lack of understanding leading to fear, while deeper understanding and positive experiences promoted acceptance. Consequently, attitude indicated significance for actual AI-usage. However, barriers such as unclear regulations, ethical and social considerations, and technical limitations were identified, requiring reflection for successful integration of AI within the accounting industry. In summary, AI works as a complement to the controller, depending on user attitude and the influence of external factors, which may have a limiting effect. / Sammanfattning Under de senaste åren har intresset och utvecklingen av artificiell intelligens (AI) varit explosivartad och samhället befinner sig mitt i den fjärde industriella revolutionen. Med grund i den förändring som skett är det av intresse att studera hur detta fått effekt på rollen som controller, då det är uppgifter som deras som AI konkurrerar med. Syftet med studien är därför att förstå hur AI integreras med rollen som controller samt hur den omgivande miljön har inflytande på AI-användningen i denna kontext. Härigenom beaktas den dynamiska relationen mellan AI, yrkesutövare och den omgivande miljön genom att undersöka hur tekniska framsteg och mänskliga förhållningssätt har inflytande på AI- användningen. Studien genomfördes med en kvalitativ ansats där elva respondenter intervjuades i semistrukturerade intervjuer. De två urvalsgrupperna bestod av aktörer inom affärssystem och controllers. Insamlade data analyserades genom kodning där följande huvudteman identifierades: utveckling, affärsmässiga och ekonomiska konsekvenser, arbetsuppgifter, kompetens och inställning. Analysen av empirin baserades på en integrering av existerande forskning tillsammans med de teoretiska modellerna Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) och professionsteori. Av analysen framkom att effekten av AI inte är lika framträdande för alla respondenter, där den däremot fått inflytande nyttjas AI som en assistent vilken tillsammans med controllern kan fullfölja arbetsuppgifterna. Vidare kunde även en indikation på skiftning i kompetenskravet observeras där den tekniska kompetensen fått ökad vikt. Även användarnas kunskap och uppfattning om AI-verktyg har inflytande över inställningen, där bristande förståelse kan leda till rädsla, medan en djupare förståelse och positiv upplevelse kan främja acceptans. Inställningen indikerar därefter få betydelse för den faktiska AI-användningen. Däremot identifieras hinder som otydlig reglering, etiska och samhälleliga hänsynstaganden samt tekniska begränsningar, vilka kräver beaktning för en lyckad integration av AI inom redovisningsbranschen. Sammanfattningsvis fungerar AI som ett komplement åt controllern, dock beroende av användarens inställning samt influensen av externa faktorer vilka kan ha en begränsande effekt.
