Six Sigma within Construction Context : As a Quality Initiative, Performance Indicator/Improver, Management strategyMuharrem Firat, Yilmaz January 2012 (has links)
Six Sigma was developed in 1980s in manufacturing industry and became popular as a process improvement method. However, the adoption of this concept is new in construction industry and the aim of this study is to evaluate Six Sigma as a process improvement method within construction context. This thesis includes Literature Review and three interviews. Literature Review had discussed process improvement methods used in construction industry and analyzed the basic features and principles of Six Sigma. Three interviews were conducted about the basic principles of Six Sigma and Quality Concept. Interviewers are a Project Manager, Field and Cost Engineer. The approach of the interview to Six Sigma is based on quality, performance and management aspects. This study defends that there is no doubt about the positive effects of Six Sigma on construction projects. Particularly, Six Sigma can provide a broader quality concept, detailed performance measurement, coordinated and repeatable process/performance improvement. It has increased quality directly/indirectly and has positive effects on production efficiency. As a 2 management approach, Six Sigma is discussable within construction context due to differences of manufacturing and construction industry. Since construction industry includes lots of unrepeatable tasks and different process design techniques, Six Sigma does not seem applicable as a whole management approach in construction industry. Furthermore, it can be integrated to the existing management procedures of companies. Taking everything into consideration, it is obvious that Six Sigma has a lot in order to accelerate fundamental and cultural challenges construction industry needs.

Tillsammans för ett hållbart arbetsliv : Ett förslag på en utvärderingsmodell som mäter individens utveckling mot ett hållbart arbetslivEn studie av iManagements arbete / Together for a sustainable work life : A proposal for an evaluation model that measures the individual's development towards a sustainable work life - A study of iManagements workSamuelsson-Allendes, Ximena, Lundberg, Charlott January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to present a proposal of an evaluation model that can be used by organizations to measure individuals' development towards a sustainable working life. The study is supported by studies of the organization iManagement, which trains individuals in selfleadership on behalf of both national and international organizations. Those who are trained by iManagement are knowledge workers who, according to the organization, are expected to perform tasks at the right time and to the right quality. Data is collected through the DiVa database, interviews, observations and during participation in iManagement's training iWorkflow during the spring of 2022. Total Quality Management, the process-based system model and the improvement cycle PDSA are used to analyze data. The study shows that the improvement cycle PDSA and the self-evaluation tool Språngbrädan can be followed step by step, dimension by dimension. This contributes to a systematic improvement work with a clear focus on evaluation and improvement. A proposal of the evaluation model XC is presented, a model that can be used to measure the effect of implementing new working methods based on the aim of achieving a sustainable working life for the individuals in an organization which requires seeing the individual from a holistic perspective. The model The Sustainable Cornerstone model is developed and shows how sustainability permeates the work with quality. The model is proposed to be tested in future studies.

In today's society fast changes demand adequate quality improvement. A good organizational structure facilitates good values, clear communication as well as apply quality management. Organizations that work successfully with quality improvement, organization development and continuous improvement tend to have a strong improvement culture. Good leadership and employeeship is required for a successful improvement culture. Social media is used as a research method in several fields. However, there is limited research regarding the connection between social media and quality management. The study explores whether it can be applied in quality management. The purpose of the study is to illuminate the experience of how organizational structure affects improvement culture from a leader and employee perspective through social media. A qualitative survey was conducted through social media followed by a qualitative content analysis. The study resulted in the theme considerations for quality development, which included the two categories improvement culture and organizational structure. The study showed a connection between organizational structure and improvement culture, which was illuminated through the respondents' experiences via social media. The study also showed that organizational structure and improvement culture are two aspects that influence and are interdependent of one another to facilitate quality development. /
2022-06-05

An empirical investigation of total quality management in Palestine: A proposed generic framework of implementation. The construction of a generic framework for effective TQM implementation in Palestinian organisations: An empirical investigation of critical quality factors and best practice.Baidoun, Samir D. January 2000 (has links)
Although academic interest in TQM increased substantially in the last decade, still
the gap in the literature is hardly surprising given that research and theory in TQM
implementation are still at a very early stage in the West. To-date, there are only a
handful of empirical researches reported in the literature that have attempted to
identify what constitute as constructs of TQM that can be manipulated to
effectively implement TQM. All but very few are studies done in developed
economies. Moreover, knowledge of TQM in developing economies is almost
totally lacking. Against this backdrop, this researcha ddressesth e identified gaps
in the literature on TQM. Thus this thesis focuses on the effective implementation
of total quality management in Palestine, a developing economy, through an
empirical investigation of critical quality factors.
The research methodology involves combining quantitative and qualitative
methodologies to identify the key quality factors cited in the literature and
considered by consultants and experts as essential to successful TQM
implementation. The research design also included: Lan empirical investigation to
assessth e level of TQM awarenessa nd understandingi n the Palestinian context,
2. determining which key quality factors are critical to successful implementation
using a survey questionnaire, 3. determining what tactics and techniques are used
in addressing and implementing these critical quality factors by Palestinian
organisations, using semi-structured interviews, 4. determining the prerequisites
of effective TQM implementation in the pre-launch stage using in depth
interviews. By complementing and integrating the findings, an implementation
framework was constructed with the support of the knowledge acquired from the
literature review. A simple and practical step by step with implementation
guidelines framework aiming at assisting Palestinian organisations in planning on
effective implementation of TQM was constructed. The research findings
indicate that top management commitment and involvement, employee
commitment and involvement, managing by customer-driven system and
processes and continuous performance improvement, are essential to effective
implementation of TQM. This implies that Palestinian organisations recognise
and implement the same critical quality factors found in Western countries.
The proposed framework is built around four major constructs that relate to top
management commitment, employee commitment, customer-driven system and
processes, and continuous improvement. It emphasises an implementation
approach of top-down deployment and bottom-up participation focussing on
businessp rocessesth at add value to customers atisfaction.
In conclusion, this empirical research revealed that TQM could be implemented in
the developing economies (such as Palestine) as Palestinian organisations
subscribe to the same quality factors as those found in the developed economies.

Paradigm Shift : effective implementation and enforcement of laws to radically accelerate the delivery of quality elementary and further education in South Africa : lessons from China, Finland and SingaporeSefoka, Isaiah Mmatipe January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (LLD.) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The delivery of substandard education to the leaners in South African schools has
become a pressing concern and needs special attention. This is so despite the advent
of democracy in 1994, which brought legislative frameworks and other measures
promoting access to quality education. This study seeks to highlight the importance of
a radical paradigm shift in educational approach, from a single (access) to a dual
system (access and delivery) in South Africa. The study examines adequacy of access
to education, by evaluating the effectiveness of delivery. The study emphasizes that
delivery should be strengthened in order to develop skills and capacity. The study also
accentuates the need to strengthen legislative measures and compliance, in order to
improve the delivery of quality education to the leaners. The domestic laws such as
the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Skills Development Act, the South
African Schools Act, Further Education and Training Act and the Continuing Education
and Training Act, which all cover access and full delivery of quality education, will be
examined. It is pertinent to point out that the delivery of quality education and skills
development, can improve the employability of leaners and graduates, wherever they
find themselves. Consequently, it is fundamentally important to increase interest in
strengthening the implementation of the skills development legislation and policies, to
drive the necessary change from access to delivery, in order to meet the
developmental needs of the country. Lessons are drawn from China, Finland and
Singapore, where policies and laws are utilized for the purpose of comparative studies.
The rationale for such a comparative analysis is premised on the fact that these
countries have very strong educational systems, which promotes the employability of
learners, and also enables learners to become self-reliant and entrepreneurs. / National Institute for
the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) and South African
