A phone application to provide advanced remote control functionality to an embedded systems product

Michel, Larry Ashley 05 January 2011 (has links)
With the increasing popularity of phone application development, a number of features have surfaced that enable users to utilize extended functionalities with their phone. With a single device, a user is now able to have access to the latest trends. As a result, functionalities from various products such as personal computers or GPS devices can now be accessible in one place. While this technology is evolving at a fast rate, it is the embedded technology and hardware that drive it which facilitate the innovative designs and solutions. At the other end of the spectrum of embedded systems, companies continue to maintain legacy products that use embedded chips programmed through their flash memory. With this perceived commitment to stay loyal to their older product designs, it has become rather cumbersome for such companies to stay current with the latest hardware and software trends. The result is higher costs to the customers for their high-end products. While the average user invests in newer and faster Google phones or iPhones, it is unlikely that the same can be said for commercial products such as a refrigerator or a ball machine. What if a development framework existed that allowed customers to have access to better user interfaces and functionalities over the lifetime of their product? In this Masters report, an innovative approach is discussed which demonstrates the latest mobile phone technology combined with an existing embedded device being applied to the conversion of a low-end tennis ball machine into an affordable high-end one. / text

Klasės auklėtojo veiklos organizavimas Lietuvos bendrojo lavinimo mokyklose / Organization of class tutor aktivities in the schools of general secondary education in Lithuania

Sinkevičienė, Rita-Janina 27 June 2005 (has links)
Rapidly developing technological progress of the 21st century, as well as social and psychological conditions of the recent decades determined certain changes in the schools of our country. Today schools have an important task – to prepare children for full-fledged life with consideration to the changes and development of our society. The programs of Lithuanian schools of general secondary education (V., 1997) declare that the key indicator of good psychological atmosphere is active cooperation of school executives, teaches and parents in solving general pedagogical problems. Here, class tutor plays one of the most important roles. In response to today’s challenges, the educational system of Lithuania is seeking to develop: - Independent and responsible person, who is able to improve his abilities throughout the whole course of his/her life; - Self-ruling and solidary civil society, which is based on knowledge and is able to preserve its oneness, create and develop its state, communicate and compete in the global world. In the way of reaching the above listed goals, the role of teacher is changing quintessentially in the educational process: the teacher, as knowledge owner and moderator is changed by teacher, who is able to organize educational process, create learning possibilities, be advisor and partner. Consequently, the class tutor plays extremely important role in whole educational system. The goal of this research paper is to analyze certain aspects of... [to full text]

Building Decoding Fluency in Children with Reading Delay and Antisocial Behaviour.

Whitcombe-Dobbs, Sarah Anne January 2012 (has links)
The present study firstly aimed to identify children with delayed reading who were missing the component skills of decoding fluency and who also displayed antisocial behaviour in the classroom. It also aimed to replicate with them an intervention designed by Church, Nixon, Zintl and Williams (2005). The study finally aimed to explore the question of whether children who have both a reading delay and a disruptive behaviour disorder require a reinforcement scheme to maintain their engagement in learning activities. Six participants worked with same-age peer tutors on specially-designed practice activities for approximately 20 minutes a day, four times a week, for 8-18 sessions. Improvement in decoding fluency and prose reading fluency was tracked for each child throughout the intervention. Results showed that the six participants gained, on average, sixteen months on their age-equivalent score for reading rate. Decoding fluency scores increased from a pre-test average of 16 correct graphemes per minute to 32 correct graphemes per minute at the post-test measure. Reading accuracy improved by an average of five months and reading comprehension by an average of six months. The gains in reading rate are most likely due to the practice opportunities afforded by the testing procedures as decoding fluency scores did not improve enough to have had a direct impact on the learners’ prose reading ability. Implications for remedial reading interventions with children with behaviour problems are discussed.

Stöd till handledare – finns det ett behov? : En kvalitativ studie om stödbehov till handledare

Hedström, Vilhelm, Mattisson Bäck, Henrik January 2014 (has links)
Except to fulfil the current rules and guidelines, persons that are active in the role as preceptors for students in their on board training shall experience a support from their employer and their colleges. The purpose of this study was to examine if the preceptors experience that they´re getting that support and also to examine what HEIs, internship administration and students themselves can do to support the preceptors. The study was implemented with a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were carried out face to face with five respondents between February 24th and March 11th 2014. The results showed that there´re room for improvement in form of various kind of support for the preceptors. The majority of the respondents’ experience that they need better support in terms of education, seminars, extra time set aside for tutoring, information about the forthcoming students, their syllabuses and expected learning outcomes as well as receiving feedback from the students on completion of the internship.

Whose Voices? Perceptions Concerning Native English Speaking and Non-Native English Speaking Tutors in the Writing Center

Chang, Tzu-Shan 01 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the roles that Native English speaking (NES) and non-native English speaking (NNES) tutors play in sessions with NES and NNES tutees in a U.S. Midwestern university's writing center, according to the perceptions of both types of tutors and tutees. The study also aimed to determine the extent to which the "native speaker fallacy"--the preference for anything related to native speakers over anything related to non-native speakers--was evident in these perceptions, particularly in tutoring strategies, difficulties in tutoring, and tutoring competence. The researcher collected data for the study from pre- and post-session interviews of both types of tutors and cross-analyzed coded patterns from this data with patterns found in pre- and post-session interviews of both types of tutees and with the researcher's observations of the participants' sessions. According to the research results, both tutors' and tutees' perceptions as expressed in their interviews were more affected by the tutors' status, NES versus NNES, than by specific qualifications of the tutors to assist tutees, with the responses revealing the participants' assumption of native speakers' superiority. Despite cross-analyzed findings that NNES tutors were perceived as more able to explain the causes of error, findings also revealed NES tutors' confidence in their NES status as compensating for their lack of grammar knowledge and NNES tutors' perception of themselves as inferior and needing to compensate for their non-NES status through teacher-like directness in assistance offered. Also, despite tutees' expressed appreciation for NNES tutors' explanations of errors, tutees still expressed a preference for NES tutors and applied a double standard, with NNES tutors seen as effective only if proved to be good writers and NES tutors assumed to be effective by virtue of their native speaker status. Drawing upon findings suggesting the influence of the native speaker fallacy on the participants' perceptions, the researcher concludes by discussing the significance of this study for identifying possible university initiatives to enhance appreciation of diverse cultures and for suggesting that although intrinsic knowledge of language seems preferred over learned knowledge, possessing both types of knowledge and the flexibility to employ more fluid roles as both peer and teacher would seem to equip tutors for more productive sessions.

The present study aims to identify and characterize the fundamental competences required to the online tutors for working in internet based distance education programs. The case study was done on the undergraduate management course at the Management School of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The motivation for this study emerged from the difficulties faced by universities on training teachers to work as online tutors, considering the huge growth distance education programs in Brazil and the intrinsic need for identifying which are the fundamental resources for the online tutors job. Within this context, this research initiates based on a theoretical frame of reference supported by the following topics: distance education and competences, emphasizing the studies of Zarifian (2001) – notion of competence, event, communication and service – and Le Boterf (1999) – concepts of competence and resources. Initiating from these concepts gathered during the literature review, an exploratory research was developed, including a stage of collects of data and an analysis of the undergraduate management course at the Management School of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. Documents and interviews with 13 online tutors, 03 class coordinators, 02 managers and 05 students were analyzed. During the present study, the author worked as an online tutor coordinator on the case study course, characterizing himself as a participant-observer. After the triangulation and the return to the theoretical frame, the analysis was initiated. The documents were analyzed by documental analysis and the interviews by content analysis. As results, two fundamental competences were obtained: students attendance and interaction with distance education program colleagues for information, knowledge and innovation exchanges. It was also obtained a group of personal, knowledge and skills resources which able online tutors to act with competence on internet based distance education programs.
