Sustaining Uber: Opportunities for Electric Vehicle Integration

Uber and Lyft, the “unregulated taxis” that are putting traditional taxi companies out of business, are expanding quickly and changing the landscape of urban transportation as they go. This thesis analyzes the environmental impacts of Transportation Network Companies, particularly in California, with respect to travel behavior, congestion, and fuel efficiency. The analysis suggests that fuel efficient taxis are being replaced by less fuel efficient Uber and Lyft vehicles. Linear regressions were run on data from the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project’s Electric Vehicle Consumer Survey of electric vehicle owners in California. The findings indicate that Uber drivers are more reliant upon the state rebate than the general population of electric vehicle owners in California.

Orientador: Victor Hugo de Almeida / Resumo: A presente pesquisa buscou examinar o setor dos motoristas por aplicativo, como enfoque específico na empresa Uber. Buscou-se, por meio da realização de entrevistas com trabalhadores, identificar vulnerabilidades às quais os motoristas por aplicativos estariam expostos e, diante dos dados coletados, discutir as políticas públicas necessárias para a proteção do setor, sempre com foco na efetivação das garantias fundamentais desses trabalhadores. Como resultados encontrados, a análise do contexto histórico permitiu compreender que a Uber representa uma ressignificação do trabalho dentro do contexto da sociedade informacional, pautando-se no lema da flexibilidade. Quanto aos dados encontrados na pesquisa empírica realizada, evidencia-se a questão de ordem econômica, na medida em que a maioria dos trabalhadores escolhe a Uber como única fonte de renda e tem, por motivação, a procura do trabalho, o desemprego no país e o baixo rendimento auferido, o que demanda uma valorização da remuneração dessa forma de trabalho. A questão econômica incide ainda em um aumento da jornada laboral e, não havendo controle para evitar excessos, pode resultar em consequências negativas para a saúde e a segurança desses trabalhadores. Ainda, tal atividade laboral apresenta diversos riscos aos trabalhadores, como, por exemplo, assaltos e acidentes, evidenciando a necessidade de adoção de mecanismos de segurança. It was sought, through interviews with workers, to identify vulnerabilities to which drivers by applications would be exposed and, in view of the collected data, to discuss the public policies necessary for the protection of the sector, always focusing on the realization of the fundamental guarantees of these workers. As results found, the analysis of the historical context allowed us to understand that Uber represents a re-signification of work within the context of the information society, based on the motto of flexibility. As for the data found in the empirical research carried out, the economic question is evident, since most of the workers choose Uber as the only source of income and have as motivation, the search for labor, unemployment in the country and the low income earned, which demands an appreciation of the remuneration of this form of work. The economic issue also implies an increase in working hours and, in the absence of control to avoid excesses, can result in negative consequences for the health and safety of these workers. Also, this work activity presents several risks to workers, such as assaults and accidents, evidencing the need to adopt safety mechanisms. Tesis (magíster en derecho laboral y previsión social) / El supuesto dogmático jurídico del trabajador se construyó bajo el concepto rígido de subordinación y dependencia, el cual ha caído en una profunda crisis derivada de las nuevas economías, tecnologías y formas de trabajo moderno, de este modo surge el Uberismo, dejando atrás este antiguo concepto estricto, estableciéndolo como un tipo normativo, el cual busca ser coherente con los principios básicos que informan el Derecho del Trabajo. Esta nueva realidad ha provocado que esta rama del derecho evolucione, ante la necesidad de replantear su función social para dar respuesta a estas nuevas necesidades de protección. La presente investigación buscará determinar la naturaleza de la relación contractual existente entre Uber y sus conductores, más concretamente, si existe un vínculo de subordinación y dependencia y de este modo determinar las obligaciones laborales y sociales que tiene Uber con sus conductores. Med teknikens utveckling kommer det en ny form av digital arbetsmarknad, även kallad för gig-ekonomi eller plattformsekonomi. Denna kvalitativa studie undersöker nio personers egna upplevelser om hur det är att besitta ett jobb inom gig-ekonomin som förare i serviceyrkena Foodora, Uber och Bolt. Studien inriktar sig på arbetsvillkor och välbefinnandet hos dessa taxiförare och matbud. Resultatet i undersökningen visar att dessa arbeten bidrar med en stor flexibilitet för utföraren där man är sin egen chef och har frihet att bestämma mycket själv. Däremot utmärker sig jobben med låg lön och därmed långa arbetsdagar som resulterar i olika former av otrygghet vilket leder till ohälsa.

El proyecto que presentamos en este trabajo, al cual decidimos llamar "Habla, Vas", consiste en un sistema de conexión mediante información relevante de demanda y oferta entre personas que necesiten movilizarse en un taxi colectivo a través de las principales rutas de la ciudad y colectiveros que necesiten generar mayores ingresos en estas rutas con mayor afluencia de tráfico en Lima. La idea de negocio parte de la necesidad de los autores por movilizarnos rápido, seguro y fácil por la ciudad, sin utilizar medios de transporte públicos que hacen que la experiencia de viajar sea incómoda, por la alta demanda del servicio y poca oferta. Esta situación, que se presenta a diario en miles de limeños, puede ser solucionado mediante una aplicación que simplifique el proceso de intercambio de información y nos evite caer en situaciones incómodas a las que los taxis colectivos tradicionales nos exponen. Asimismo, luego de la evaluación financiera preliminar del proyecto, notamos que el mismo tiene un potencial de rentabilidad altamente explotable, que constituye una oportunidad inmejorable para ser los primeros en este segmento, logrando lo que en su momento consiguió empresas como Uber o Globo. Además, se requiere una inversión relativamente pequeña frente a un negocio convencional y será totalmente accesible a través de las tiendas de Android y Apple. Finalmente, este proyecto será nuestra mejor carta de presentación e ingreso en el mundo de los negocios para nuestros futuros proyectos, ya que hemos recabado la información necesaria para entender la operación de ellos. / The project that we present in this document, which we decided to call "Habla, Vas", consists of a connection system through relevant information of demand and supply, between people who need to move in a group through the main routes of the city and groups who need to generate income on these routes with the highest traffic flow in Lima. The business idea stems from the authors' need to move quickly, safely and easily around the city, without using public means of transport that make traveling uncomfortable, due to the high demand for the service and low supply. This situation, which occurs daily in thousands of Lima, can be solved through by the application that simplifies the process of information exchange and prevents us from falling into uncomfortable situations to which traditional groups expose us. Likewise, after the preliminary financial evaluation of the project, we note that it has a highly exploitable profitability potential, which constitutes an unbeatable opportunity to be the first in the segment, achieving what companies such as Uber or Globo achieved at the time. Also, a relatively small investment is required compared to a conventional business and will be fully accessible through Android and Apple stores. Finally, this project will be our best letter of introduction and entry into the business world for our future projects, since we have collected the necessary information to understand their operation. / Trabajo de investigación

A Fault-aware Sensor Fusion System for Autonomous Vehicles

There have been several accidents involving autonomous vehicles on public roadways under scenarios that are normally avoidable by competent human drivers. This thesis contains a review of these accidents and their causes as a result of inadequate hazard mitigation. As a solution to this problem, a novel design pattern is proposed. This design pattern was developed from a hazard analysis using Systems Theoretic Process Analysis ( STPA ) methodologies that analyzed the circumstances common to several of these accidents. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the novel design pattern, an example system is constructed and tested in simulation against several accident scenarios similar to the ones studied. 共享經濟在近年來大行其道,其透過資訊平台直接媒合交易供需的雙方,根本性的改變以往我們對交易模式的想像與觀察。然而,共享經濟也備受爭議,以本研究個案Uber為例,其在保險、賦稅與消費者安全等問題上與政府進行多次討論,卻難獲具體共識。除此之外,對相關利害關係人而言,對Uber亦有各自擁護的價值與立場,使政府在凝聚利害關係人共識及價值選擇上陷入兩難困境。   本研究採用利害關係人分析與理論,並以Uber運輸服務為研究個案,探悉政府管理共享經濟新創事業的整體場景。研究的核心發現主要有三:第一,政府面對新創事業所涉及的價值選擇,相較於經濟利益,平等與安全的價值更為重要。第二,政府應依照不同利害關係人的特性與立場,進行利害關係人管理,作為政策制定與管理的重要依據。第三,利害關係人對政府決策的影響力,除與利害關係人權力、合法性地位以及對問題的急迫性密切相關外,亦展現在其公共關係經營能力與政策溝通能力上,如何與政府部門在理性與對等的前提下進行積極溝通,將是新創事業是否能在市場上合法經營的關鍵因素,對未來欲進入市場的新創事業具有指標性的參考意義。

The Uber Boundary : Contextualizing the Organizational Boundary of a Digital Platform Organization

Digital platform organizations challenges the organizational landscape by utilizing technology enabling cost efficient transactions. Uber is a commonly known example of such an organization, where tensions have arisen in various local contexts due to that the organization draw their boundary tightly around the platform to the benefit of organizational efficiency. Uber has as a consequence, been highly questioned in its liability of their primary operations: Is it a technology platform, or a transportation firm?   This thesis sets out to answer:  How is the organizational boundary of Uber challenged in various local contexts? The purpose is to provide an explanation towards how the organizational boundary of a digital platform organization could be understood in relation to local context, and how it can or cannot evolve in regards to these contexts. The results show that context matters for the boundary of Uber. In addition, a pattern amongst the context specific events emerged influencing the boundary. These can be categorized into four configurations: Adjusting, Expanding, Withdrawing and Intertwining. Each of the configurations explain the underlying reasons for the varying fluctuations the boundary of Uber show, and thus answer how the organizational boundary of Uber is challenged in various local contexts.
