Mötet med det svenska samhället : En kvalitativ studie med fem unga vuxna som kommit till Sverige som ensamkommande asylsökande barn / Confronting the Swedish society : A qualitative study with five young adults with permanentresidence permit who came to Sweden as unaccompanied asylum seeking minors

The aim of this study was to reach an understanding of how young adults with permanent residence permit, who came to Sweden as unaccompanied asylum seeking minors, experience their confrontation with the Swedish society. Another purpose was to understand how these young adults view Sweden and its inhabitants, as well as the experience of starting a new life in Sweden. In order to investigate these questions, a qualitative method consisting of five interviews with five young men was conducted. The results showed that the respondents feared the meeting with the immigration board and that they feel that school is divided in two groups, Swedes and immigrants. People with nonethnic Swedish background who have lived in Sweden for a long time are seen as Swedes, and in that meaning assimilated. One important conclusion we made was that the division between Swedes and immigrants have a negative influence on the immigrants´ integration in the society. Another conclusion is that school has to take more responsibility to give the children a more meaningful life.

In 2006 there was a change in LMA (1994:37) that clarified the division of responsibility be-tween the Migration Board and the municipalities, concerning unaccompanied children. The social services should now be utmost responsible for the housing and care of these children, to assure that they gain the same standards and rights as all other children. The aim of this essay has been to examine how the division of responsibility has influenced the work of the social services and how they interpret their responsibility for the unaccompanied children. How do the social services investigate and make decisions concerning these children? Do these chil-dren have the same rights as other children? To answer these questions a legal study was made, followed by qualitative research interviews with four social services that receive unac-companied children. The study was made from a legal sociologist perspective, which involves analyzing the results from the interviews with the legal results, together with earlier research on unaccompanied children. The results show that the division of responsibility still is indis-tinct and that the investigations concerning these children often are brief and simplified. In two of the interviewed municipalities the view was that unaccompanied children did not have the right to efforts according to SoL (2001:453), which in practice means that the unaccom-panied children are discriminated.

Kulturella identiteter : - En studie hur individualistiska och kollektivistiska värderingar kan förstås ur ett intersektionellt perspektiv.

Studiens syfte är att se hur individualistiska och kollektivistiska värderingar kan förstås ur ett intersektionellt perspektiv med fokus på kulturell identitet. I ett bekvämlighetsurval hittade vi respondenter från Mellanstadskommuner i klasser för SFI (Svenska För Invandrare) och SAS (Svenska som Andra Språk) samt kollektivboenden för ensamkommande flyktingbarn. Genom att utföra studien på svenska studenter på två olika gymnasieskolor samt japanska individer erhölls referenspunkter i förhållande till Hofstede’s data gällande kulturella värderingar och dimensioner. Respondenterna fick svara på ett enkätformulär som är utformat av Ph.D. Reggie Pawle utifrån Hofstede’s identitetsdimension och översatt av uppsatsens författare till svenska, samt till Japanska av en japansk översättare. Resultatet utgör en samling tabeller och intressanta iakttagelser som t.ex. att ungdomar med utländska föräldrar svarat på enkäten utifrån olika kulturella värderingar vilket stämmer in med tidigare forskningars rapporter att dessa ungdomar slits mellan sina föräldrars kultur och den nya. Teoretiska jämförelser påvisar att det finns intersektionella tendenser. / The purpose of this study is to see how individualistic and collective values can be understood from an intersectional perspective, focusing on the cultural identity. In a convenience sample we found respondents from Middle sized municipalities in classes for SFI (Swedish For Immigrants) and SAS (Swedish as a second language) as well as collective homes for unaccompanied refugee children. By performing the study on Swedish students at two high schools and Japanese individuals we obtained reference points in relation to Hofstede's data on cultural values and dimensions. Respondents were asked to answer a questionnaire form designed by Ph.D. Reggie Pawle based on Hofstede's identity dimensions and translated by the essay writers into Swedish, and Japanese by a Japanese translator. The result is a collection of tables and interesting observations such as that young people with foreign parents responded to the survey based on different cultural values which fits in with previous research reports that these young people are torn between their parents' culture and the new. Theoretical comparisons indicate that there are intersectional trends.

Känner mig inte mer annorlunda än någon annan i Sverige : Ensamkommande barns integrationsprocess i Sverige

Syftet med denna undersökning var att bidra till en ökad kunskap kring ensamkommande flyktingbarns integrationsprocess i det svenska samhället. Vidare syftar studien till HVB-hemmets roll i denna process. Studiens val av metod är den kvalitativa metoden med åtta öppna intervjuer. Vi använde teorier som berör integrationsprocessen, vilket i detta fall var identitet, roll, socialt nätverk, socialt stöd, integration samt byråkrati för verksamhetens arbete. Studiens resultat tyder på att HVB-hemmets roll för denna process har varit omfattande med tanke på boendet har bidragit till att skapa ett tryggt hem, erbjudit socialt stöd, uppmuntrat till att delta i föreningslivet samt bidragit till sociala kunskaper. Även språket, skolan, nätverket och stödet från myndighetsutövare har bidragit till integrationsprocessen för barnen. Slutsatser som framkom är att de före detta ensamkommande asylsökande barnen är på ett objektivt och subjektiv plan integrerade i det svenska samhället. Lyckade integrationsprocesserna beror på kombinationen mellan barnens egna drivkrafter och samhället tillgängliga stödfunktioner. I och med flykten till ett främmande land kan en slutsats dras från denna studie att rollförändringar och identitetsbildningar har präglat de före detta ensamkommande barnen under deras integrationsprocess. Även inslag av rollförändringar och identitetsskapande finns hos personalen som arbetat med de ensamkommande barnen genom samspelet mellan grupperna. / The purpose of this study was to contribute to an increased knowledge of unaccompanied refugee children's process of integration into the Swedish society. Furthermore, the study aims to HVB-home role in this process. The study selection method is the qualitative method with eight open interviews. We used the theories related to the integration process, which in this case was the identity, role, social networks, social support and integration. Also bureaucracy was used to describe HVB-homes work. The study's results suggest that HVB-home role in this process has been extensive considering the accommodation has helped to create a safe home, offering social support, encouraged to participate in club activities and contributed to social skills. Even the language, school, network and the support of public power have contributed to the integration process for children. Conclusions that emerged is that the former unaccompanied asylum seeking children are in an objective and subjective planes integrated into the Swedish society. Successful integration processes depends on the combination of the children's own motivations and society accessible support functions. By fleeing to a foreign country, there is a role change and identity formation that characterized the former unaccompanied children during their integration process. Elements of the role and identity changes characterize the staff worked with this group through collaboration between the groups.

The aim of this study was to understand how staff at residential homes for unaccompanied children experiences their professional role. The main focus of the study was on how the staff defines their professional role and how they handle the situation to be close and at the same time keep a distance towards the children in care. Five women and two men were interviewed at five different residential homes for unaccompanied children. By symbolic interactionism we are able to see that the professional roles are shaped through interaction with the children in care as well as in relation to colleagues. The main role for the staff is to build up a relationship with the children. This also includes an emotional aspect which demands ability to closeness at the same time as there is a need to be able to keep a distance. This also marks the interviewee’s definition of how to be professional. How the children’s age defines has also an impact on the staff’s definition of their profession which means that both staff and children are forced to redefining their role in the residential home. We also found that a main purpose in the role as staff was to actively work with integration towards the children in care. Another interesting result that affects the ability to closeness and distance is the fact of being a young woman as staff, because of the cultural differences that exists between staff and the children in care.

The aim of this study was to examine how social workers relate to unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, regarding their cultural background and potential social issues. In order to achieve a more profound and comprehensive view of the social workers views regarding the separated children, we selected to execute semi structured interviews with social workers. These interviews were aimed at those social workers who performed assessments and investigations concerning unaccompanied children. We completed nine interviews which we recorded and transcribed in a strict manor. When we analyzed the empirical material, certain themes where identified as more protuberant and thus we our selection was based on what we regarded as the most relevant topics, in accordance to the aim of the study. Furthermore, our focus was set upon the social workers views regarding cultural differences between unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and Swedish children. We also decided to focus on which views these social workers portrayed, regarding the unaccompanied asylum-seeking child’s cultural background and how social issues could affect the social workers frame, their assets and formulation of their interventions, concerning separated children. We learned during our study that the social workers are enduring a heavy workload, especially since the numbers of arriving separated children are rapidly increasing. Furthermore, the economical recourses, in forms of personnel, are not increasing the same pace. In recent years, societal attitudes have altered and more negative and separative views regarding separated children are apparent. However, the social workers have applied a more universalistic approach towards the children to show the resemblances rather than differences between unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and Swedish children. Our study makes evident, that underneath this universalistic policy, culturalization of the children took form and this development also affected how the interventions were framed. Conclusively, this study displays how culturalization of the interventions affected the care of the children negatively and resulted in a declining standard of care, as well as differentiation of care.

Melodia et rhetorica: the devotional song repertory of Hildegard of Bingen

A central focus of this thesis is the word-music relationship in the devotional-song-repertory of Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). Surrounding this focus is an examination of aspects of her life and work that relate to the production of her seventy-seven monophonic songs. This examination commences with a review of biographical sources, collation and discussion of parchment sources of her music, and identification of her music scribes. The theme of Hildegard’s music scribes is then developed, including their influence upon the liturgical genres in which her songs are cast and the melodic behaviour of her music. It is argued that, as a result of the rendering of her melodies on the medieval gamut, the surviving sources of her songs represent corruptions of orally produced chant. / The word-music relationship in Hildegard’s songs is then introduced. Her views on the role of music and her own role as monastic preacher form the basis of an examination of the relationship between rhetoric and her songs. This examination draws on contemporary modes of rhetorical criticism, and an approach which treats her songs as musically articulated rhetorical discourse is developed. A selection of her songs is then examined through this approach, and particular attention is given to songs which preserve unusual melodic behaviours. It is argued that her songs represent iubilatio responses to both the grammatical and rhetorical syntagms of her song texts, and melodic characteristics which suggest traces of her pre-redacted melodies are identified. / As a codicil to this study, a critique of ‘new’ and ‘unusual’ monastic practices in Germany by Anselm of Havelberg (c.1100-1158) forms a point of departure for discussion of a small number of surviving songs which surrounded the production of Hildegard’s music - the five monophonic songs comprising the Epithalamia to the Speculum virginum (c.1140), and a twelfth-century canticle setting emanating from the monastic home of her music scribes. This examination points towards a tradition of ‘new’ and ‘unusual’ musical practices in Southern Germany during the twelfth century and provides one possible context for Hildegard’s devotional-song repertory.
