Yacht Fin Stabilisers : Enhancing the User Experience and Sustainability in the Field of Industrial Design EngineeringPihlgren, Jon, Svensson, Karl January 2024 (has links)
This master thesis delves into the design and aesthetics of a specific product in the marine industry, a stabiliser fin. The thesis is in collaboration with the company Humphree which develops and sells one of these fins. The Humphree all-speed fins are mounted on yachts to stabilise the vessel while cruising as well as at zero speed. The fins provide the user with stability and increase the comfort for the whole crew while optimising fuel efficiency. As this fin withstands huge loads and forces the fin should be trustworthy and express so as well. As of today, these criteria might not be fully fulfilled. This is part of the first aim of this thesis, “How can the design be updated to align with customer’s desires?”. Humphree focus is to stabilise marine vessels with their two main products, the stabiliser fins, and their Interceptors. As Humphree grows, the company should explore new markets within the marine area and create products with a common thread, which is a part of the second aim of this thesis “How can the product better showcase its capabilities?”. As the world faces environmental complications and risks, Humphree wants to do their part in the area. The marine market is already seen as a villain in this area, especially in the private sector. This is something that could, and should, be improved as a big part of the world’s population seeks more environmental products. This is investigated in the final aim, “How can the environmental impact of the product be reduced?”. Throughout the pilot study, the principles of Human-Centred design were applied to enhance the quality of the research and facilitate the identification of correlations between information instances. The primary objective was to conduct a pilot study to identify the future requirements for stabiliser fins. This involved primarily interviewing assemblers and people from Humphree, as well as benchmarking and lastly a design review was held to determine the necessary technical solutions. Secondly, a new concept of the fin should be made according to the findings from the pilot study. The thesis resulted in that the new concept should have a material change to aluminium instead of carbon fibre. The aluminium enhances the fin’s robustness and enables repairability, thus improving its environmental friendliness. Design adjustments to the exterior were made to align with Humphree’s product design, optimize mounting efficiency and enhance the fin´s robust appearance. However, the design changes were small as the pilot study confirmed the effectiveness of the current fin design.

The development of a reference database of health information resources to facilitate informed lifestyle choiceCottrell, Genevieve Lee 30 June 2008 (has links)
This study investigates, within the current health care situation, the
interrelationship of the user, resources and tool in the design of a prototype
WELLNESS database-driven web site. A shift has taken place in health care,
in which the base of conventional medicine has broadened to integrate other
systems, practices and worldviews. These include complementary and
alternative medicine, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness.
Emphasis is placed on the need to take personal responsibility for one's own
health and wellness. The global burden of chronic disease, reaching
epidemic proportions, is increasingly linked to risk factors resulting from
personal lifestyle choices. The growing evidence of the user's need to make
personal, informed, lifestyle choices and their reliance on the Web for health
information, required investigation. WELLNESS, a specific orientation to
health and wellness, formed the framework within which the user and
resources were defined and the tool designed. The user was profiled as the
WELLNESS health information seeker, hereby contributing significantly to an
understanding of the user in this new context. The user profile informed the
establishment of resource selection criteria and tool design. The identification
of WELLNESS content selection criteria, within a five-dimensional model, was
required to ensure quality, relevant and credible resources. The tool is
comprised of the WELLNESS thesaurus and WELLNESS database-driven
web site. The WELLNESS thesaurus was constructed based on a
combination of relevant thesauri. It will be used as an indexing tool. An
investigation of existing health information web sites highlighted the
importance of designing a specific WELLNESS database-driven web site. A
database host was identified against which the original study's conceptual
schema was assessed. A low-fidelity prototype web site was designed as the
interface between the WELLNESS health information seeker and the
database of WELLNESS health information resources. This study has
epidemiological, philosophical, epistemological, sociological and
psychological relevance. The provision of access to WELLNESS health
information resources, made available in the WELLNESS database-driven
web site, for personal, informed lifestyle choice by the WELLNESS health information seeker could potentially contribute to the reduction of the global
burden of chronic disease. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil. (Information Science)

Dual-method usability evaluation of e-commerce websites : in quest of better user experienceMoczarny, Izabela Maria 10 1900 (has links)
E-commerce has increased substantially, as e-retailers engage with consumers online. Users require more than products and quality service; they also expect a good user experience. User experience is affected by branding, functionality, navigation, content, aesthetics and usability.
This study investigates the attainment of better user experience on e-commerce websites. A dual-method usability evaluation approach – usability testing with end-users and heuristic evaluation by experts – was employed to obtain a holistic picture of how usability aspects support or hinder the user experience. Usability testing provided insights into detailed interface issues and the type of content and journey that users prefer when making a purchasing decision, while heuristic evaluation was mainly directed at overall user interface and interaction factors. In a complementary way, each method identified a high number of usability problems.
Key findings are summarized, and design guidelines are identified that can facilitate the development of e-commerce websites to promote user experience. / E-handel het aansienlik toegeneem, soos e-kleinhandelaars by verbruikers aanlyn betrokke raak.
Computing / M. Tech. (Information Technology)

Our way of life and the products that surround us have never evolved so quickly. This evolution is a new factor to take into account in the product development to ensure the product appropriation by the users. For that reason the design approaches try to integrate usages. The Living Lab approach is organised around four principles: the realism of the studied situation; the continuity in the collaboration with the users; the collection of spontaneous usage data; the empowerment of users in the design process. These principles facilitate the path from "user-centred design" to "usage-centred design" but are difficult to realise practically. To guide and inspire the designers we propose a Living Lab project method made of eighteen operations; each operation is supposed to reach one of the four principles. The proposed method is represented with NIAM-ORM diagrams which are easily understandable because of its similarity with natural language. We tested our method on two urban projects and two industrial projects. The relevance of the tested operations on the principle realisation is evaluated according to bayesian networks: depending on the results the operations are validated, adjusted or rephrased and implemented again in the NIAM-ORM model

Defined as one of the main causes of disability, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a chronic condition that can cause physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficits. These deficits may interfere with the person's ability to engage in daily activities, including complex activities such as meal preparation. To support this population during meal preparation, an assistive technology for cognition (ATC) called Cognitive Orthosis for coOKing (COOK) was recently developed in collaboration with an alternative residence for people with severe TBI. Following the installation of COOK, three residents were able to prepare meals safely and independently within their home. However, little is known about how COOK could meet the needs of people with TBI living in the community, or how it could provide personalized, minimal and contextualised assistance to support this population. This thesis aimed to develop a knowledge base to support the development of an improved version of COOK that would meet the varied needs of this new population, by meeting three objectives: 1) define the verbal assistance needs of people with moderate to severe TBI to enhance COOK's customization possibilities; 2) evaluate the usability and user experience of COOK in a laboratory setting and in a real-world environment; and 3) identify the facilitators and obstacles that may influence the implementation of COOK within the homes of people with TBI and in clinical settings. Integrated in a user-centered design process, four studies were conducted: (1) a study using conversion mixed design and video data analysis to document the verbal assistance provided to 45 participants with TBI during a meal preparation task; (2) a usability mixed-methods study during which 10 participants with TBI tested COOK in a laboratory setting; (3) a mixed-methods single-case study to assess the usability of COOK with a man with severe TBI living in the community; and (4) a qualitative descriptive study involving people with TBI, caregivers and healthcare professionals, to explore their perceptions of the facilitators and obstacles to the potential implementation of COOK in their respective settings. The first study identified nine types of cognitive assistance and one type of motivational assistance that were provided by occupational therapists to support people with TBI, and documented the difficulties for which these assistances were provided. Several usability issues were also documented when testing COOK in a laboratory setting (study 2) and in a real-world environment (study 3), particularly with the self-monitoring security system. Modification needs were also identified by the participants (studies 2, 3, and 4) to improve COOK. Finally, the fourth study highlighted many facilitators (e.g., the functionalities available in COOK) and obstacles (e.g., the logistics surrounding installation, learning and support of COOK) to consider before implementing ATCs like COOK. Ultimately, this knowledge base will support the continued development and the implementations of ATCs such as COOK to meets the needs of a larger population.

Enhancing User Satisfaction Through Micro-interactions: A Qualitative Study of Usability on SpotifyHongjian, Li, Yujie, Zhou January 2024 (has links)
This study investigates the impact of micro-interactions on user satisfaction within music applications, specifically examining the usability differences between simpler and more complex interactions. The research employs semi-structured interviews to assess user satisfaction with two different levels of micro-interaction complexity. The goal is to derive actionable insights for optimising user-centred design in digital music streaming platforms, ultimately enhancing user satisfaction. The semi-structured interview method is chosen for this study, with the assistance of A/B testing designed by the researchers to gain realistic and informative qualitative data. To analyse a large amount of qualitative data, thematic analysis is utilised as the analytic method. The results reveal a clear preference for simple micro-interactions. Participants found these interactions required fewer steps, were more intuitive, and demanded minimal cognitive effort, thereby avoiding information and feature overload. In contrast, complex micro-interactions often led to confusion and frustration due to unnecessary complexity and unclear iconography. Moreover, participants expressed a need for personalised and voice-activated interactions to enhance usability and accessibility in diverse contexts. These findings underscore the importance of designing micro-interactions that align with users' mental models and preferences. By prioritising simplicity, intuitiveness, and personalization, music streaming services can significantly improve user satisfaction and engagement.
