Previous issue date: 2013 / Resumo: O objetivo dessa tese é apresentar, em português, a tradução de Alector, histoire fabuleuse, obra de Barthelemy Aneau, publicada em 1560, em Lyon, por Pierre Fradin. A tradução dessa narrativa fabulosa inscreve-se no projeto de tradução de utopias literárias, como uma das linhas de pesquisa coordenada pelo professor Dr. Carlos Eduardo Ornelas Berriel, no Departamento de Teoria Literária do Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem da Universidade de Campinas, e foi co-orientada pela professora Dra Marie-Luce Demonet, do departamento de Letras Modernas, área Renascimento, do Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance, durante os dois anos de permanência na cidade de Tours, França (março de 2010 a março de 2012) e até o encerramento do doutorado. As evidências decorrentes de uma leitura linear dessa obra podem encobrir uma profusão de elementos que se distribuem em uma espiral de interesses de seu autor que vão do exercício da Retórica e defesa do vernáculo a um exercício da "ironia" pelo uso da palavra onde falta a liberdade para a sua expressão. Uma abordagem que desvie da linearidade parece ser uma das condições para se prosseguir nos desvendamentos de Alector. A hipótese de que personagens reais pudessem estar travestidos em personagens de ficção orientou a escolha metodológica: pesquisa bibliográfica e abordagem de diferentes centros de documentação, como os Arquivos da cidade de Bourges, Lyon, Paris, Vanves, Roma e Cidade do Vaticano. Intentou-se estabelecer vínculos entre a morte trágica de Barthélemy Aneau e as suspeitas de infiltração calvinista no Collège de la Trinité, onde Aneau foi "Principal" e justificar Alector como metáfora ou ironia de seu tempo. Essa tese organiza-se em duas partes: a Parte A cumpre oferecer um estudo crítico da cidade imaginária de Orbe. Essa parte constitui-se de três momentos: as análises de aspectos gerais da obra, principalmente o julgamento de Alector e o diálogo dos anciãos; a dimensão utópica da cidade orbitana; e, finalmente, a sua dimensão religiosa e a Parte B compreende o estudo que preparou a tradução e contém dois capítulos: o primeiro procura caracterizar a obra, discute o sentido da narrativa em seu contexto e apresenta seu autor, além de uma apresentação geral dos resultados das pesquisas realizadas nos arquivos; o segundo intenta refletir sobre o processo tradutório de Alector, visando a justificar a tradução filológica como uma das perspectivas possíveis de tratamento do corpus submetido ao trabalho de análise, a explicitar o referencial teórico, bem como as etapas de organização do trabalho de tradução. A conclusão retoma sucintamente a discussão apresentada nessas duas partes e vem seguida da tradução bilíngue de Alector, narrativa fabulosa. Os Anexos apresentam o repertório de documentos consultados nos Arquivos e bibliotecas na França, Itália e Cidade do Vaticano. As buscas nos Arquivos não revelaram nenhuma evidência que pudesse confirmar a hipótese anunciada, mas apontaram pistas para o prosseguimento da pesquisa: lacunas encontradas nos documentos da Nunciatura da França e documento inédito encontrado na Bibliothèque muncipale de Lyon sobre a morte do médico encarregado da "autópsia" do corpo de Barthélemy Aneau. Depois da tradução oferecida pelo médico inglês John Hammond, em 1590, espera-se que "Alector, narrativa fabulosa" possa contribuir a fomentar o interesse pelas utopias literárias produzidas durante o período do Renascimento / Abstract: This thesis presents the Portuguese translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse by Barthelemy Aneau, published in Lyon in 1560 by Pierre Fradin. The translation of that fabulous story is part of the translation project of literary utopias and one of its research lines, supervised by Professor Carlos Eduardo Ornelas Berriel of the Department of Literary Theory of the Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem of the University of Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil); it was co-directed by Professor Marie-Luce Demonet of the Department of Modern Languages, Renaissance Studies, of the Centre d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance during a two-year doctorate exchange program in the city of Tours, France (March 2010-March 2012). A linear reading of Alector could hide a variety of elements that are distributed in a spiral of interests by the author, ranging from the exercise of Rhetoric and the defense of the vernacular to a practice of 'irony' by the use of speech where freedom of expression lacks. Therefore, a non-linear approach seemed to be a prerequisite to progress in the research and in the interpretations of that work. The assumption that real people could hide behind the fictional characters guided our methodological choices: a survey of the literature and visits to several documentation centers, such as the archives of the city of Bourges, Lyon, Paris, Vanves, Rome, and the Vatican. We aimed to find a connection between the tragic death of Barthélemy Aneau and the suspected Calvinist infiltration at the Collège de la Trinité managed by Aneau and we wanted to demonstrate that Alector is a metaphor or irony of its time. Our thesis is made up of two parts: Part A contains a critical study of the imaginary town of Orbe and is made up of three sections: first, the analysis of the general aspects of the work, especially Alector's trial and the dialogue of the elder; second, the utopian dimension of the city of Orbe and third, its religious dimension. Part B contains the study that prepared the translation and features two sections: the first one characterizes the work, discusses the meaning of the narrative in its context, and introduces its author; it also contains the general analysis of the results of the research conducted at the archives. The second chapter reflects on the process of translating Alector and was developed to justify the philological translation as one of the possible ways of treating the analyzed corpus, to explain both the theoretical basis and the organizational stages of the translation. The conclusion briefly resumes the discussion presented in these two parts and is followed by the bilingual translation of Alector, histoire fabuleuse. The appendices list the documents we looked up at the archives and libraries in France, Italy, and the Vatican. Our research at the archives did not produce any proof that would confirm our hypothesis, but revealed leads for future research, such as the gaps found in the documents of the Nunciature in France or an unpublished document found at the Municipal Library of Lyon on the death of the physician in charge of the "autopsy" of Barthelemy Aneau's body. After the translation provided by the English doctor John Hammond in 1590, we hope that 'Alector, histoire fabuleuse' may contribute to raise interest in the literary utopias of the Renaissance / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutora em Teoria e História Literária

Manuel Bandeira's poetry, themes as the memory and the Utopia. For so much, the
poems were selected Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada and Teresa, texts that are
shown open to the analysis of those themes. In our analysis, we began by thinking
what is the poetic and what characterizes it. We saw that it is born with the mythical
thought and it is a type of permanence of the main characteristics of this thought:
amalgam between the memory and the search of a truth or answer for the being. We
related that subject of the search with the perception of the lack in the poetic
bandeiriana; it lacks of a body and of a future, that is reflected in the construction of
his poetry, deeply linked to the themes of the finiteness and of the memory. Starting
from philosopher Henri Bérgson's theories and of novelist Marcel Proust, we passed
to the analysis of the theme of the memory, defending it, in the poetry bandeiriana,
as recovery possibility and of recriação of what it was. Like this, we noticed that the
theme of the memory was directly linked to the theme of the Utopia, because in a
poem as Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada, the recovery of an individual past goes
directly by the tradition of a promised land to all, mythical, true. In Teresa, it happens
the inverse process: of the collective memory, through the literary rereading, we pass
to the individual longing of communion with the other, through the love. We
concluded that the poetry banderiana is a rereading process and permanent
recreation, a pendulum that keep going from one to the other to return full of new
meaning for the first one. The poetry as a process of seam of a particular person,
that borns starting from itself and that necessarily goes by the other / O propósito dessa dissertação é analisar como se configuram, na poesia de Manuel Bandeira, temas como a memória e a utopia. Para tanto, foram selecionados os poemas Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada e Teresa, textos que se mostram abertos à análise desses temas. Em nossa análise, começamos por pensar o que é o poético e o que o caracteriza. Vimos que ele nasce junto com o pensamento mítico e é uma espécie de permanência das principais características deste pensamento: amálgama entre a memória e a busca de uma verdade ou resposta para o ser. Relacionamos essa questão da busca com a percepção da falta na poética bandeiriana; falta de um corpo e de um futuro, que se reflete na construção de sua poesia, profundamente ligada aos temas da finitude e da memória. A partir das teorias do filósofo Henri Bérgson e do romancista Marcel Proust, passamos à análise do tema da memória propriamente dito, defendendo-o, na poesia bandeiriana, como possibilidade de recuperação e de recriação do que foi. Assim, percebemos que o tema da memória estava diretamente ligado ao tema da utopia, pois em um poema como Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada, a recuperação de um passado individual passa diretamente pela tradição de uma terra prometida a todos, mítica, verdadeira. Em Teresa, ocorre o processo inverso: da memória coletiva, através da releitura literária, passa-se ao anseio individual de comunhão com o outro, através do amor. Concluímos que a poesia banderiana é um processo de releitura e recriação permanente, um pêndulo que vai do eu ao outro para retornar cheia de novo significado para o eu. Previous issue date: 2010-06-08 / This dissertation provides a study of the novel What Can I Do When Everything's On Fire?, by Portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, in his poetic journey. This novel represents one of the most dense and complex moments in the artistic project of Antunes. Beginning with the literary criticism and literary theories, this study was developed in three chapters. In the first chapter it was discussed the author's literary project and its utopian character; we still review his literary cycles. In the second chapter it was discussed the importance of poetry and tragedy for the composition of What Can I Do When Everything's On Fire?. In the last chapter it was analyzed in the novel, in its most original and characteristic form, the poetic language and the linguistics strategies by Antunes / Esta dissertação estabelece um estudo do romance Que Farei Quando Tudo Arde?, do escritor português António Lobo Antunes, visando destacar seu percurso poético. Esse romance representa, como buscamos evidenciar, um dos momentos mais densos e complexos da criação literária de Antunes. A partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, que abrangeu fortuna crítica e teorias de base, o estudo foi desenvolvido em três capítulos. No primeiro, buscou-se desvendar o projeto literário do autor e seu caráter utópico, além de ser feita uma revisitação aos diversos ciclos que formam sua obra. No segundo capítulo, discutiu-se a relevância da poesia e da tragédia para a composição de Que Farei Quando Tudo Arde?. History, through the 1980 s Generation, recognizing it as a Transitional
Generation, making the paradigms, the theoretical perspectives and the slopes of
political thought from the end of the twenty century explicit, through the generational
intersection that makes it dynamic. Considered by some the Decade of the Political
Revival, or the Death of Utopias, for others, it will be in this conflict care that the
period of the Decade that Cannot Be Lost will be characterized. To deepen in those
premises, concepts were listed as: Generation, Memory, Resistance, Praxis and
Utopia, debated by Sociology, Education, Social Psychology, Economy and History,
emphasizing, not only, but mainly, the Marxist vision taken by different historical
moments and by several theoreticians. To unmask such task we appealed in a
panoramic approach to the development of concepts in theoreticians as Mannheim,
Halbwachs, Bobbio, organizing the historical contextualization from Hobsbawm, and
the Pedagogy discussed by the theoretical vision of Gramsci. The result will be in the
development of a field of Praxis and Resistance Culture undertaken by the
teachers vanguard, through the multiple axis: Social Movements; Political
Movements Unions; reorganization of the reminiscent Left Parties; the foundation
of the Workers Party; and the intense debates registered in the core of the Brazilian
Intellectuality of the period, standing out in the area of Education Curriculum / O objeto desta pesquisa será apresentar o contexto da recente história brasileira,
através da Geração 1980, reconhecendo-a enquanto uma Geração Transicional,
explicitando os paradigmas, as perspectivas teóricas e vertentes do pensamento
político do final do século XX, através da intersecção geracional que a dinamizou.
Considerada por alguns a Década do Renascimento Político, ou a Morte das
Utopias, para outros, será no desvelamento desse conflito que se caracterizará o
período como a Década Imperdível. Para o aprofundamento dessas premissas,
foram elencados conceitos como: Geração, Memória, Resistência, Práxis e Utopia
debatidas pela Sociologia, Educação, Psicologia Social, Economia e História, dando
ênfase, não apenas, mas principalmente, ao viés marxista tomado por diferentes
momentos históricos e por diversos teóricos. Para desvendar tal empreitada
recorreremos em uma abordagem panorâmica ao desenvolvimento dos conceitos

L’étude des mobilisations sociales et institutionnelles nées autour d’un projet d’aménagement urbain – la Zone de l’Union (métropole lilloise, Nord) – permet d’analyser l’évolution théorique de la justice sociale lorsqu’elle se trouve progressivement confrontée aux limites environnementales. Originellement, ces mobilisations sociales étaient éloignées des enjeux spécifiquement écologiques.Mais une lente évolution des revendications s’opère lorsqu’il s’agit de se positionner sur un projet d’ « écoquartier exemplaire » (2006-2022). Nous nous intéresserons au glissement des revendications sociales (fondées sur la justice distributive et la reconnaissance politique) vers des revendications écologiques (élaborées à partir de la confrontation de la justice sociale aux limites environnementales). L’analyse des dispositifs de transformation des discours, des procédures participatives, ainsi que de l’évolution des référentiels théoriques des mobilisations, participe à une réflexion sur les conditions de transformation de la démocratie pluraliste représentative. A travers l’étude de la justice écologique et de ses enjeux, nous proposons de repenser la manière dont les limites environnementales peuvent être intégrées aux pratiques participatives de la démocratie. En nous appuyant sur les travaux de la Green Political Theory, nous montrons également que la justice écologique repose sur une conceptionécocentrée de la justice qui pourrait contribuer à interroger la théorie de la démocratie à partir des interdépendances existentielles entre les sphères sociales et écologiques. / This work aims at analysing the theoretical evolution of social justice when it is progressively confronted to environmental limits. It is based on the study of the social and institutional movements that arose around an urban planning project – the Union Zone – in the metropolis of Lille, Northern France. These social movements were at first concentrating their claims on issues far from ecologicalconcerns. But a slow evolution of their claims took place when they were confronted to a project of “exemplary eco-district” (2006-2022). This work will focus on the shift from social claims (based on distributive justice and political acknowledgement) to ecological claims (where social justice is confronted to environmental limits). Drawing on an analysis of the transformation of discourses, of the participation procedures, and of the evolution of the theoretical frames used by the social movements, we offer an insight on the conditions of transformation of pluralist representative democracy. This analysis of the issues and purposes of ecological justice aims at reconsidering the way environmentallimits could be incorporated into the participative practices of democracies. Drawing on the field of green political theory, this work also aims at showing that ecological justice lays on an ecocentrist view of justice that could contribute to question the theory of democracy in the light of existentialinterdependences connecting the ecological and the social spheres.

Always Painting the Future: Utopian Desire and the Women's Movement in Selected Works by United States Female Writers at the Turn of the Twentieth CenturyBalic, Iva 08 1900 (has links)
This study explores six utopias by female authors written at the turn of the twentieth century: Mary Bradley Lane's Mizora (1881), Alice Ilgenfritz Jones and Ella Merchant's Unveiling Parallel (1893), Eloise O. Richberg's Reinstern (1900), Lena J. Fry's Other Worlds (1905), Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915), and Martha Bensley Bruère's Mildred Carver, USA (1919). While the right to vote had become the central, most important point of the movement, women were concerned with many other issues affecting their lives. Positioned within the context of the late nineteenth century women's rights movement, this study examines these "sideline" concerns of the movement such as home and gender-determined spheres, motherhood, work, marriage, independence, and self-sufficiency and relates them to the transforming character of female identity at the time. The study focuses primarily on analyzing the expression of female historical desire through utopian genre and on explicating the contradictory nature of utopian production.

Tropes of Alterity in Soviet and Polish Science Fiction (1957-1992)Tereshchenko, Serhii January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation examines Soviet and Polish science fiction from the 1960s to 1980s as a political genre that investigates power and society. The problem of alterity is central for this genre: it is ungovernable because it is incomprehensible. Science fiction of this kind explores the possibilities and impossibilities of living with the Other that can impact social organization dramatically and lethally while that Other cannot be impacted in return. Living peacefully with such alterity is the fundamental premise of pluralism as a principle of social organization, according to the conclusions of the study.
The dissertation explores alterity in science fiction by Ivan Efremov (1908–1972), Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (1925–1991 and 1933–2012), Stanisław Lem (1921–2006), and Volodymyr Savchenko (1933–2005). My goal is to reveal in their works a transformative epistemological shift that had manifested itself through the tropes of alterity. Among these tropes the dissertation highlights aliens and alien civilizations, artificial intelligence, anisotropic universe, distant planets endowed with unique natural attributes, the more abstract unknown, and non-human elements running out-of-control within human species. I also examine specifically science-fictional notions such as the bull and progressor, which represent the intelligentsia’s relations with power and the masses. The analyzed literary worlds also represent their authors’ views of alternative societal organization, ruled by the powerful alterity such as a mega-computer or alien super-intelligence. Another important trope of alterity is based upon a simultaneous performance of contradictory competing logics that create an effect known as parallax: the reader may interpret the same characters and/or stories in multiple, mutually incompatible, ways.
Beyond avoiding censorship, these tropes set the stage for the authors’ utopias, in which the Other appears as an impenetrable alterity that affects those who encounter it. For these writers, alterity serves as the tool for problematizing progress, as it was imagined after World War II by the majority of political elites under socialism and in the West. I suggest that their science fiction contributed, among many other factors, to the lexicon and the imaginary of a cohort of political dissidents and Communist Party functionaries alike who translated science-fictional themes into political science terms to shape Perestroika’s discourse. The dissertation, thus, establishes a historical connection between Soviet and Polish science fiction of the post-Stalin period and the ways in which democracy was discursively constructed in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and other former socialist nations.

This thesis examines selected speculative novels by Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, Doris Lessing and Marge Piercy. It argues that a specifiable ecological ethic can be traced in their work – an ethic which is explored by them through the tensions between utopian and dystopian discourses. The first part of the thesis begins by theorising the concept of an ecological ethic of respect for the Other through current ecological philosophies, such as those developed by Val Plumwood. Thereafter, it contextualises the novels within the broader field of science fiction, and speculative fiction in particular, arguing that the shift from a critical utopian to a critical dystopian style evinces their changing treatment of this ecological ethic within their work. The remainder of the thesis is divided into two parts, each providing close readings of chosen novels in the light of this argument. Part Two provides a reading of Le Guin’s early Hainish novels, The Left Hand of Darkness, The Word for World is Forest and The Dispossessed, followed by an examination of Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time, Lessing’s The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five, and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. The third, and final, part of the thesis consists of individual chapters analysing the later speculative novels of each author. Piercy’s He, She and It, Le Guin’s The Telling, and Atwood’s Oryx and Crake are all scrutinised, as are Lessing’s two recent ‘Ifrik’ novels. This thesis shows, then, that speculative fiction is able to realise through fiction many of the ideals of ecological thinkers. Furthermore, the increasing dystopianism of these novels reflects the greater urgency with which the problem of Othering needs to be addressed in the light of the present global ecological crisis.
