Saving Lives With Geo-Spatial Web Standards : A Test Architecture for Evaluating the Possibility of Sharing Heterogeneous Data Among the Emergency Services

Sundin, Lena January 2012 (has links)
The emergency services in neighboring Jämtland, Sweden and Nord-Sør Trøndelag, Norway have identified a need to share data across department, municipality and country borders. A project is started to evaluate the possibility of sharing information through a common Web Geographic Information System (GIS). The data about resources at the various departments suffers from a high level of heterogeneity, fragmentation and protocol incompatibility. The Open Geo-Spatial Consortium (OGC) issue Web standards to harmonize the processing of geo-spatial data and promote interoperability between GIS systems. A test model based on the Thin Thread Model, emulating a potential final solution, is built to evaluate the usability of these Web standards in the situation. Successful test cases including CRUD operations and relatively smooth swapping of layer modules show that using well-established standards can be beneficial. A proposed architecture extending the test model presents the idea of a centralized proxy node and a meta data catalog. The study highlights the issue of responsibility and question of which authority should maintain centralized nodes. In order to successfully implement a Web portal, the project participants must from a technical point of view investigate how to access all desired data, agree on protocols for communication and ensure that each owner of data provides an API in agreement with the protocol. The OGC Web standards are proven a good option and focal point.

Implementierung eines Feature Portrayal Service

Domeyer, Martin 07 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)

[en] RISKS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (WMS) IN DISTRIBUTION CENTER: CASE STUDY / [pt] RISCOS NA IMPLANTAÇÃO DE WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (WMS) EM CENTRO DE DISTRIBUIÇÃO: ESTUDO DE CASO

ALCIONE SANTOS DOLAVALE 05 February 2018 (has links)
[en] Currently, Information Technology (IT) has assumed crucial role for achieving the efficient administration at both the strategic and the operational, providing business benefits that include reducing costs, increasing productivity, quality, flexibility and innovation. And one of the resources used is the implementation of a Warehouse Management System, called Warehouse Management System (WMS) software that receives the relevant information to the warehouse, generating responses for improved handling, storage, picking and shipping of products as the organization s needs. However, the implementation of a WMS system can be considered much more than a technology project that involves structural and behavioral changes, becoming a process of relatively high risk and complex. This study aims to identify and plan responses to the risks of implementing a new WMS in the warehouse of a large company in the cosmetics industry. The results confirmed many activities that must be managed in favor of non-commitment of the proposed objectives of the company, while knowing that the risk is somewhat uncertain as to its occurrence. Still, for future users of the WMS, to understand the inclusion of risk management in their deployment projects will bring greater likelihood of success, because as more becomes known risks and mitigating actions, more confidence and security firms will take into projects of this nature.

Strategic Placing of Field Hospitals Using Spatial Analysis / Strategisk Lokalisering av Fältsjukhus med Spatial Analys

Rydén, Magnus January 2011 (has links)
Humanitarian help organisations today may benefit on improving their location analysis when placing field hospitals in countries hit by a disasters or catastrophe. The main objective of this thesis is to develop and evaluate a spatial decision support method for strategic placing of field hospitals for two time perspectives, long term (months) and short term (weeks). Specifically, the possibility of combining existing infrastructure and satellite data is examined to derive a suitability map for placing field hospitals. Haut-Katanga in Congo is used as test area where exists a large variety of ground features and has been visited by aid organisations in the past due to epidemics and warzones. The method consists of several steps including remote sensing for estimation of population density, a Multi Criteria Evaluation (MCE) for analysis of suitability, and visualization in a webmap. The Population density is used as a parameter for an MCE operation to create a decision support map for locating field hospitals. Other related information such as road network, water source and landuse is also taken into consideration in MCE. The method can generate a thematic map that highlights the suitability value of different areas for field hospitals. By using webmap related technologies, these suitability maps are also dynamic and accessible through the Internet. This new approach using the technology of dasymetric mapping for population deprival together with an MCE process, yielded a method with the result being both a standalone population distribution and a suitability map for placing field hospitals with the population distribution taken into consideration. The use of dasymetric mapping accounted for higher resolution and the ability to derive new population distributions on demand due to changing conditions rather than using pre-existing methods with coarser resolution and a more seldom update rate. How this method can be used in other areas is also analysed. The result of the study shows that the created maps are reasonable and can be used to support the locating of field hospitals by narrowing down the available areas to be considered. The results from MCE are compared to a real field hospital scenario, and it is shown that the proposed method narrows down the localisation options and shortens the time required for planning an operation. The method is meant to be used together with other decision methods which involves non spatial factors that are beyond the scope of this thesis.

Assessing the Need for Culturally Responsive Science Curriculum: Two Case Studies from British Columbia

Neill, Brian William 29 September 2015 (has links)
This inquiry began with a global question: Why are Aboriginal high school students underrepresented in the sciences? This led to the following series of questions: What is science? Is Aboriginal knowledge about nature and naturally occurring events science? What is science literacy? What are culturally responsive approaches to science education? The initial inquiry began as part of the Aboriginal Knowledge and Science Education Research Project, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Over time the inquiry morphed into two case studies. The first case study focused on a quantitative exploration to examine the current state of student performance in British Columbia secondary school science (Biology 12, Chemistry 12, and Physics 12), and mathematics (Principles of Mathematics 12). The examination of performance trends for over a decade confirmed the underperformance of Aboriginal students in secondary school sciences and mathematics when compared to non-Aboriginal students. The second case study sought to establish criteria, identify, and document a model project that incorporated the methods of western modern science (WMS) knowledge and ways of knowing represented by traditional ecological knowledge and wisdom (TEKW), local ecological knowledge (LEK), and indigenous knowledge (IK) in a local environment (place-based) and that was culturally responsive to students and faithful to science education principles. A model project was identified in British Columbia operating within the Heiltsuk First Nation territory by the Qqs (pronounced “kucks”) Projects Society. This project exemplified the Te Kotahitanga Project in Aotearoa/New Zealand by engaging student interns in science in place. Qqs partnered with a number of non-governmental organizations to develop the Supporting Emerging Aboriginal Stewards (SEAS) Initiative, whereby interns used WMS techniques to study their traditional territory in the Great Bear Rainforest. The SEAS project was deemed to make science more relevant for Aboriginal students, who may otherwise have rejected it because of a possible conflict with their cultural value systems and personal relevance. There is a persistent tension between science espoused by WMS, and the wisdom and sacredness of indigenous knowledge and wisdom (IKW). Finally, recommendations are proposed for a Two-row Wampum Belt or a trans-systemic practice that would enable IKW and WMS knowledge to operate in a spirit of mutual cultural responsiveness, followed by recommendations for future study. / Graduate

Förutsättningar för effektiv tredjepartslogistik : en studie om effektiviseringar med hjälp av WMS / Conditions for effective third party logistics : a study in efficiency improvements with the aid of WMS

Lindström, Filiz January 2009 (has links)
