Sporrong, Elin January 2012 (has links)
This paper aims to describe and elaborate on a recent discursive change within the new-age movement. Since the seventies and the publishing of speculative popular science books like The Tao of Physics by Fritjof Capra and The self-aware universe by Amit Goswami, the idea that quantum physics resonates with spirituality has become the topic of hundreds of books and movies. The quantum-spiritual discourse has three distinct ways to approach quantum physics in its discussion on spirituality: The parallelistic approach which emphasizes the similarities between eastern philosophies and modern physics, the monistic-idealistic approach which tells us that mind is the foundation of matter and the scientific spiritual approach which tries to explain spiritual claims scientifically. In the quantum-spiritual discourse, quantum physical phenomena (e.g. non-locality and entanglement) are being called upon to validate metaphysical statements. The primary assumption of the discourse is that the shift of paradigm due to the establishment of modern physics also is a shift of paradigm of spirituality. With the object to examine the common claims made in the discourse, cross-references between spiritual arguments and facts of quantum physics are being made. A discussion is held about the probable influence of the historical context, with particular focus on the monistic evolvement during the late nineteenth century.

The experience of hope for informal caregivers of palliative home care patients : a grounded theory exploration

Holtslander, Lorraine Fay 17 November 2004 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the processes of hope in informal caregivers of palliative patients. Interviews were conducted with caregivers who were living with and currently providing care to a palliative patient at home. Saturation was reached with 10 caregivers, five females and five males, from 2 cities in Saskatchewan, Canada.
The design of this qualitative study was Glasers (2001) grounded theory. Broad, unstructured face to face audio taped interviews were conducted in the participants homes. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using constant-comparative method of analysis in order to identify the main concern of the participants related to hope, and the basic social processes used to resolve that concern.
Eroding hope was the main concern relating to hope during caregiving for a palliative patient. Eroding hope was a result of bad days, negative messages, and experiences with the health care system. The participants deal with eroding hope by using the basic social process of hanging on to hope. Hanging on to hope has 4 sub-processes: a)doing what you have to do, b)living in the moment, c)staying positive, and d)writing your own story. The support of friends, family, and health care professionals and connecting with something bigger and stronger were sub-processes of hanging on to hope that together directly affect the other sub-processes.
The findings of this study have direct application for the care and support of informal caregivers providing palliative care at home, as a basis for assessment and interventions that will assist caregivers to hang on to hope. Nurses and other health care professionals need to recognize and value the experience of hope for caregivers by addressing, teaching, and reinforcing the sub-processes and ways of hanging on to hope into their practice.

Parents' stories of homework : experiences alongside their children and families

Murray, Tamara 12 January 2009 (has links)
The objective of this program of research was to listen to parents voices on homework with a focus on what homework means for their children, themselves and their families. While, within this body of literature, there is consensus on a definition of homework, a multitude of studies on homework and its effect on academic achievement and the development of work habits, and an extensive body of literature on types of homework assignments, there are no known qualitative studies on homework from parents perspectives. Within schools, teachers are positioned as knowing professionals and parents are positioned as helpers, who know less about the learning process. Power and authority rest with educators who make decisions important to teaching and learning decisions about homework policies and practices, for example often with little or no parent input or participation. Because teachers ask for little input from parents, parents rarely feel they can talk to teachers about their childrens experiences with homework and the resulting impact on their family.
Determining what knowledge parents of elementary school children (pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8) hold about homework, how they feel about homework, how homework impacts their children, how homework impacts them as parents, and how homework impacts their families was the focus of this narrative inquiry. The parents stories highlight the non-academic benefits the parents believe exist for their children through their engagement with homework. They also bring to the fore the many reasons homework can be problematic for their children and for them as they attend to the individuality of their children and the complexity of their family lives. They raise important issues for educators to consider in relation to homework: the implications variations within families, schools, teachers, parents and students may have for homework policies and practices; the need for reciprocity in home/school communications and the development of equitable rather than hierarchical relationships between parents and educators. Possibilities for changes in teacher education, both preservice and inservice; for a rethinking of policy and practice for both parents and educators; and for the direction of future research all emerge in this work.

"Living in truth" : moral and political intersections in Samuel Beckett, Tom Stoppard, and Václav Havel

Harger, Jennifer Leigh 26 July 2011 (has links)
Often considered to be apolitical playwrights, Samuel Beckett and Tom Stoppard each dedicated dramatic works to dissident Czech playwright (and later President) Václav Havel in the late 1970s and early 1980s—during his imprisonment for his role in writing and distributing the dissident document Charter 77. These dramatic works, with a few others, collectively mark simultaneous, parallel shifts in Beckett’s and Stoppard’s careers toward uncharacteristically explicit political engagement. This report examines these works—Beckett’s Catastrophe and What Where, and Stoppard’s Every Good Boy Deserves Favor and Professional Foul—through the lens of Havel’s political philosophy, especially as expressed in his 1978 essay “The power of the powerless.” This report argues that Havel’s model of apolitical resistance to injustice, a model he calls “living in truth,” expresses humanist values that these playwrights had long affirmed in their art. Their shared moral vision, along with sympathy for Havel’s plight under a totalitarian regime that distorted language as a tool of oppression, was the catalyst for their new, direct involvement in political matters. The report establishes the historical context of the Soviet-dominated Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, along with relevant biographical and professional narratives for each figure. It then examines closely this selection of Beckett’s and Stoppard’s dramatic works and their shared thematic concerns, and demonstrates how they artistically embody and communicate Havel’s model of “living in truth.” / text

Fugitive rhythms : re-imagining diasporic Caribbean-Canadian communities in Ramabai Espinet's The Swinging Bridge, Tessa McWatt's Out of My Skin, and Dionne Brand's What We All Long For

Waisvisz, Sarah Gabriella. January 2006 (has links)
How do immigrants to Canada experience exile and diaspora? What happens when a person does not identify with a nostalgic past "there" or a present "here," but rather with "nowhere"? I am interested in the development of a diasporic critical consciousness in three recent novels by Caribbean-Canadian women writers. This paper uses theories of diaspora, cosmopolitanism, hybridity, kala pani discourse, and anti-racist feminist analysis to discuss Ramabai Espinet's The Swinging Bridge (2003), Tessa McWatt's Out of My Skin (1998), and Dionne Brand's What We All Long For (2005). Overall the novels explore the potential of art and artistic strategies to express the complex condition of diaspora, to form alliances between different cultural and ethnic communities, and to enable social and political change. While acknowledging the violent and traumatic historical factors that have contributed to diaspora, the novels look to art and hybridity as sites of resistance and hope.

Solidaritet på förskolan : En studie om sex förskollärares beskrivningar om vad värdet solidaritet med svaga och utsatta innebär i förskolans praktik / Solidarity at preschool : A study of six preschool teachers descriptions of what the value of solidarity with weak and vulnerable means in preschool practice

Conradsson, Magdalena, Stark, Katarina January 2018 (has links)

Sandro Santos da Rosa 22 March 2013 (has links)
The use of music in rehabilitation of people who use psychoactive substances emerges as an epistemological question to the field of Music Therapy. The lack of theoretical and practical researches in Music Therapy, which focuses on the complexity of the demand in rehabilitation of people affected by the abuse of substances, is the main motivator for the development of this work. Methodologically based on a bibliographical review, this dissertation is divided into three parts. The first investigates how the abuse of psychoactive substances rooted itself as one of the main problems of the current society and how the use of substances is culturally related to the arts, specifically music. This part has an approach of the Liberation Theology, which seeks the recognition of the dignity, common to all human beings, by looking into the suffering of the people. The second part identifies the ritual paths, in which the trans-signification of what is real happens. Issues related to language and ways the human being uses to leave reality, which mediate their existential quest, are the core of this part. The third and last part addresses the communicational and organizational nature of the music, in order to build an epistemological concept that considers the demand regarding to the clinical music therapy practice in rehabilitation of people affected by the abuse of substances. In this part, we identify that the Music Therapy session is a healthy practice of trans-signification of becoming human.

Riscos de lesões decorrentes de posicionamento cirúrgico e procedimentos eletrocirúrgicos: investigação do conhecimento do enfermeiro / Lesions risks arising from the surgical position and electrosurgical procedures: investigation of Nurses' knowledge

Barbosa, Osvaldo Carlos Pereira January 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2018-06-18T13:12:06Z (GMT). / Introduction: To ensure safe surgical procedures, nurses have to generate their actions from technical and scientific knowledge regardless the type of procedure and technology used. These procedures call for measures that reduce the risk of adverse events that may occur prior to, during and after surgeries. Adverse events are incidents resulting in harm to the patient. Objective: Identifying the extent of a nurse knowledge regarding the risk of lesions that result from surgical positioning and electrosurgical procedures. Method: Descriptive and prospective studies with a quantitative approach. The data collection took place during the XIX International Symposium of Sterilization and Infection Control Related to Health Assistance, organized by the Brazilian Association of Surgical Center Nurses, Anesthesia Recovery, Center of Material and Sterilization – ‘SOBECC’ at the “Palácio de Convenções do Anhembi”, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on September 17-20, 2014. We asked surgical center nurses that were taking part in the event to answer a questionnaire that evaluated what they knew regarding the risk of lesions related to surgical positioning and electrosurgical procedures. We received back 188 (56%) out of the 350 questionnaires that were delivered. Results: In regard to the profile of those who answered the questions, 171 (91%) were females and 17 (9%) were males. Most of them, 150 (80%), were from the South and Southeast of Brazil. With reference to their education, 117 (62%) were in school for 10 years, 71 (38%) were in school for more than 10 years and 95 (51%) had taken specialization courses. With respect to knowledge, 64 (34%) did not think preoperative genitalia hair removal was important; 74 (39%) stated that an active electrode that was not in use could remain close to the operatory area; 76 (41%) did not comply with the frequency of preventive servicing; 77 (41%) responded positively to the request of raising the scalpel motor power without reevaluating the accessories; 44 (23%) did not believe that extension chords and connectors could alter vascularization and facilitate an adverse effect in the area; 66 (35%) did not avoid the contact of skin with skin in areas that could sweat or collect liquids; 145 (77%) stated that long surgeries presented a greater risk of lesions; 43 (23%) said it was not important to avoid the presence of liquid under the patient at degerming and or cleaning him with alcohol; 43 (23%) did not think polymer static devices were more efficient to prevent pressure ulcers. The knowledge about the risk of lesions caused by surgical positioning and electrosurgical procedures correlates to the nurse who specialized in this area (82,1%) and another who has not specialized in the area (73,1%). The information gathered in this study can contribute to the formulation or reformulation of preventive strategies regarding the risk patients run during assistance as well as to the elaboration of protocols that ensure safety and provide even more quality to Health services.

Essays on Prosocial Price Premiums

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: In two independent and thematically connected chapters, I investigate consumers' willingness to pay a price premium in response to product development that entails prosocial attributes (PATs), those that allude to the reduction of negative externalities to benefit society, and to an innovative participatory pricing design called 'Pay-What-You-Want' (PWYW) pricing, a mechanism that relinquishes the determination of payments in exchange for private goods to the consumers themselves partly relying on their prosocial preferences to drive positive payments. First, I propose a novel statistical approach built on the choice based contingent valuation technique to estimate incremental willingness to pay (IWTP) for PATs that accounts for consumer heterogeneity, dependence in the decision making processes, and incentive compatibility. I validate the approach by estimating IWTP for a variety of PATs and contrast the theoretical and managerial benefits of using the proposed approach over extant techniques used in the literature for this purpose. Second, I propose a general and flexible statistical modeling framework for estimating PWYW payments that exceed zero. It relies on the joint estimation of three types of consumer decision processes namely, the consumer propensity to default to an explicit price recommendation, the propensity to pay a least legitimate price, and the payment of a freely-chosen non-zero payment. Of particular interest is the model's ability to account for a wide variety of design constraints such as the setting of price bounds, explicit price recommendations, and the provision of a menu of discrete prices to choose from. I validate the approach by estimating PWYW payments for a variety of products such as music licenses, snacks, and sports tickets. I specifically examine and report the differential impact of three managerially controllable variables namely, 'payment anonymity', 'information on payment recipients' and 'information of product value/quality'. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2016

Förskollärares didaktiska arbete i förskolan med språkutveckling som exempel : En kvalitativ studie om förskollärares arbete utifrån de didaktiska frågorna vad, hur och varför / Preschool teachers didactic work in preschool with language development as an example : A qualitative study on the work of preschool teachers based on the didactic questions what, how and why.

Jonsson, Pernilla January 2020 (has links)
