Our intention is to specify the characteristics of the fantastic, the strange and the wonderful in each story. We begin with a theoretical discussion in which we put these two authors in dialogue, aiming to emphasize their similarities and differences. Felipe Furtado, in his book A construção do fantastico na narrativa (1980), criticizes the definitions of Todorov s views presented in the book Introdução a literatura fantástica (1992). He argues that, by attributing the primacy of the definition of fantastic, strange and wonderful to the reader, Todorov is actually privileging a second element and not the most important one the ambiguity. Furtado concentrates his definition of fantastic, strange and wonderful on the ambiguity that arises from the stories through the presence of the supernatural element. His definition begins with the mutual reminding of the text elements that must turn themselves to the fantastic, in case the ambiguity remains; or to the strange, in case the superiority from the reality prevails; or still the wonderful, if the elements contribute to the maintenance of an arbitrary reality. With both authors in dialogue, we study the short stories mentioned, intending to explicit and clear the ways and characteristics of the supernatural in the narratives that compose the corpus of the present research and, by doing so, emphasizing the characteristics of each discourse / A presente dissertação faz a análise dos contos A Visita, Uma noite de chuva e A travessia do escritor Josué Guimarães à luz dos ensinamentos teóricos de Tzvetan Todorov e de Felipe Furtado; com o intuito de especificar as peculiaridades do fantástico, do estranho e do maravilhoso em cada narrativa.

Étude des opérateurs différentiels globaux sur certaines variétés algébriques projectives / On global differential operators on some projective algebraic varieties

Dejoncheere, Benoît 14 December 2016 (has links)
In their subsequent work, Borho and Brylinski have discovered many interesting properties on differential operators on flag varieties. But apart from the case of flag varieties, and the case of projective toric varieties, which has been investigated with combinatorial methods, differential operators on projective varieties are rather badly known. In this thesis, we will investigate the case of some wonderful compactifications Y of symmetric spaces G/H of small rank, and we will compare our results with what is known in the case of flag varieties. We will first construct a differential operator on Y which does not come from the infinitesimal action of G, which is different from the case of flag varieties. We will then look at three particular cases, which will be expressed as GIT quotients of some Grassmannian X. With this description, we will find some similarities with the case of flag varieties : we will show that the algebra of global differential operators is of finite type, and that for each invertible sheaf L on Y, the module of its global sections is simple as a module over the algebra of global differential operators of Y twisted by L. Finally, using arguments of local cohomology, we will show that it is still the case for higher cohomology groups

The objective of this study was to evaluate different techniques for the vegetative propagation of the pomegranate. In the first moment, our objective was to test techniques for cutting, in order to assess the feasibility propagation varieties 'Molar' and 'Wonderful' in the dry and rainy seasons. Subsequently, we verified the feasibility of production of grafted seedlings with these two varieties, using as rootstock seedlings of the variety 'Molar' propagated by cuttings. The survey was conducted from August 2012 to November 2013, in a greenhouse, in the Campus Center of Science and Agrifood Technology, Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal-PB, Brazil. Aiming to study the propagation by cuttings of pomegranate, two experiments were conducted with each variety ('Molar' and 'Wonderful'), one in the dry season, which comprised August to December 2012 (Experiment I) and another in the rainy season, from January to June 2013 (Experiment II), for the two varieties. We used a completely randomized design with four replications and five plants per replication, adopting the factorial design consisting of two factors, the managements of cuttings (cuttings with leaves, cuttings without leaves and cuttings without leaves more incision at the base) and evaluation periods (days after planting the cuttings) in order to study the growth, physiology and dry mass of seedlings pomegranate. In order to study the propagation by grafting, we used the randomized design, considering the factorial (4 x 4), four methods of grafting (grafting the top cleft, cleft in lateral slit; budding plate and T budding inverted) x four times of assessment (45, 60, 75 and 90 days after grafting), with four replications and five plants per experimental unit in order to evaluate the growth, physiology and accumulated dry weight of seedlings pomegranate. Cuttings managed with incision at the base gave a higher growth and strength the seedlings of both varieties studied pomegranate and the rainy season favors the vegetative propagation of the pomegranate. The methods of grafting provided better growth of seedlings of pomegranate. Being the grafted seedlings by grafting the left side with the greatest growth and dry matter accumulation.

Lara, Dalila Andrade 02 March 2012 (has links)
Most narratives of Eça de Queiroz is aimed to the so-called realism / naturalism. At the end of the nineteenth century, Eça has its climax with the final publication of O Crime do Padre Amaro (1875), the subject of great social criticism. But what interests us in this work is the fact that at this very moment, the author has given way to a fantastic and humorous literature, which takes place with the publication of O mandarim. Eça can show their works in a game between fiction and reality, because even being a pioneer in Portugal Realism, fantasy fits perfectly in his novels and short stories. And in some of his works, the characters travel to the East cause some hesitation in the reader, which comes into contact with this image as Eastern scrutinized and observed by the Western view. This study aims to analyze and present spatial features and two fantastic works of Eça de Queiroz: O mandarim and A relíquia, from the perspective of writers such as Edward Said, in his work Orientalism, that emphasizes the concept of Orientalism. It\'s important to note here that O mandarim and A relíquia are not the only two works that focus on the issue, since many other works of Eça portray the East.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao - GLACY.pdf: 597942 bytes, checksum: 9384b610fdefcaa6ccb9eb5f21b4e096 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-12-10 / In Incidente em Antares, Erico Verissimo's novel, history and wonderful events come together to show the reality of recent history of our country, specifically the military dictatorship established in 1964. From a microcosm, the small town of Antares, Verissimo‟s fiction expands to the macrocosm, providing an allegorical reading of that historical moment. Because death gives the impunity necessary to the ghosts, the novel, written with courage and commitment, gives them powers to denounce all the arbitrariness that Brazilian people were living. Far from being a ghost story, Incidente em Antares is a political novel, which portrays and reveals Brazilian reality in a particularly difficult moment for free intellectual thought. In our studies, therefore, we used some theoretical reflections that were important for our purposes to see what mechanisms were responsible for creating these real effects, since the second part of the narrative, alone, has no reference to external reality, once unbelievable characters tell a story that also could not happen in the real world.

An American Tale: Incarnations of the Wizard of Oz and the Negotiation of Identity, Race, and Gender, in Popular Culture

Orshan, Carly A 13 July 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to address the way in which several quite varied and often commodified representations of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) express and reproduce shifting notions of national identity within American culture across the twentieth century and at the beginning of our own. This thesis pursues the question of national identity that the American myth perpetuates throughout the twentieth century and examines the shift in citizenship through representations found in popular culture’s re-writings of the Wizard of Oz tale. This thesis evaluates both original and contemporary adaptations of the Oz story and their deconstruction for sociohistorical representations of racial, gendered, class, and national identity. I argue, that the numerous historical and ideological comparisons from the Oz tale reflect our own world in our discussions of identity, race, class, and gender and have become significant reflections of our own imaginations and national identity.

Wonderful renormalization

Berghoff, Marko 11 March 2015 (has links)
The so-called wonderful models of subspace arrangements, developed in by DeConcini and Procesi, based on Fulton and MacPherson''s seminal paper on a compactification of configuration space, serve as a systematic way to resolve the singularities of Feynman distributions and define in this way canonical renormalization operators. In this thesis we continue the work of Bergbauer where wonderful models were introduced to solve the renormalization problem in position space. In contrast to the exposition there, instead of the subspaces in the arrangement of divergent loci we use the poset of divergent subgraphs of a given Feynman graph as the main tool to describe the wonderful construction and the renormalization operators. This is based on a review article by Feichtner where wonderful models were studied from a purely combinatorial viewpoint. The main motivation for this approach is the fact that both, the renormalization process and the model construction, are governed by the combinatorics of this poset. Not only simplifies this the exposition considerably, but it also allows to study the renormalization operators in more detail. Moreover, we explore the renormalization group in this setting, i.e. we study how the renormalized distributions change if one varies the renormalization points. We show that a so-called finite renormalization is expressed as a sum of distributions determined by divergent subgraphs. The bottom line is that - as is well known, at the latest since the discovery of a Hopf algebra structure underlying renormalization - the whole process of perturbative renormalization is governed by the combinatorics of Feynman graphs while the calculus involved plays only a supporting role.
