A competitive business strategy for the Eritrean Marine Products Company (EMPC)

Beshier, Almaz M. January 2004 (has links)
This research deals with assessing and analysing the reasons behind the low productivity and profitability growth of the Eritrean Marine Products Company (EMPC) and the main goal of this research is to assist the company to improve its competitive position in the export and domestic markets. In order to address the low productivity and profitability of EMPC (the research problem), the following four main objectives are outline I valuating how and to what extent the company capitalises on its strengths and opportunities, and avoids weaknesses and the threats in the environment; testing how the company's strategy is suitable by determining how the company's capabilities are effective in adding value and improving its competitive position; testing the strategy acceptability by assessing the financial performance and outcomes of the company, and finally testing its feasibility by assessing whether the company has the resources and competencies that match to the strategy. To discuss the research objectives literature review is developed based on the strategy evaluation process using the evaluation criteria of suitability, acceptability and feasibility frame-work. Since this research is a case study and qualitative in nature, annual reports and other studies about EMPC are used to collect the secondary data. Interviews have been also conducted with the company's managers and other staff members to collect the primary data. According to the study findings, EMPC has a lot of opportunities such as growing demand of fish in international markets especially the EU market, and financial as well as technical support from the Eritrean Government. However, EMPC has some structural weaknesses such as lack of fishing skills and insufficient infrastructure which resulted in shortage of supply. The gap analysis showed that there is a big gap between the projected and actual quantities of fish production. The financial performance of Asmara Processing Plant (branch of EMPC) is quite satisfactory, while ERIFISH (branch of EMPC) was facing financial loss. The gross and net profit margins were negative through out the period of 1999-2002. Finally, it is recommended that EMPC has to revise its production plan, improve its internal operations, and upgrade the skills of the staff. To be competitive in the export market, EMPC should either invest in niche market by providing high-perceived value, through better quality, design, and branding or horizontally integrate with capable firms is a valuable option for the company to benefit from the fishing know-how and economies of scale. / Thesis MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2004.

Leroux, Bertrand 24 March 2010 (has links)
In 2000, the law Solidarity and Urban Renewal aims at refurbishing strategic spatial planning. Local authorities are pushed to group in order to lead the writing of new master plan (schéma de cohérence territoriale). In the following years, 400 SCOT are being studied. This implementation is analyzed through a focus on urban planner works. From 2002 to 2006, interviews with these planners enlighten the master plan creation main phases : create the perimeter, drawing the maps, writing the guidelines. This PHD shows how planners play negotiation and mediation roles through this normative production, how they succeed in raising an agreement on collective rules. This analysis shows that normative planning is not an end but a beginning : Law argument on possible effects of a to-be rule -such as litigation through courts, or master plan cancellation- is a way to organize public decisions and begin negotiation. An historic analysis on law production and master plan elaboration during the last 40 years, today's interests and involvement of the profession on legislative production and law arguments complete the situated-work observation

Experiences of international social work graduates entering the labor market

Amaya, Mariam, Seppälä Lindholm, Markus January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the study is to explore the experiences of international social work graduates when looking for employment in the field of social work in Sweden after graduation. Because the aim of the study is to study the experiences a graduate face when entering the labor market, we have deemed that a qualitative method with semi structured interviews to collect data would be best suited for our research. The selection will be chosen from international social work graduates who studied in Sweden. The intention is to focus on both graduates with 210 study points and graduates with 180 study points. 4 participants together. The empirical data was analyzed with the mind of using the theory of capital by Pierre Bourdieu. This theory; the theory of capital is seen as an empirically orientated concept, that has been one of the most widely used concepts in international sociology and on the intersection of sociology and educational studies. The authors have put the findings in three (3) categories: Background, labor market and further improvement. These themes were found to be a commonality with the graduates interviewed.  This study found that it can be hard to acquire employment nationally, with an international social work degree.

Nespolo, Gabriela Fabian January 2017 (has links)
The care by the health worker tends to be carried out in daily life, in meetings, in the transformation of suffering in potency. However, the distance from work and biomedicalization are presented as alternatives once suffering, instead to be potentiated to produce new senses of living, is transformed in sickness. This situation is permeated by this search, wich aimed to understand how nursing workers build care of themselves, map the interventions of the ways of caring for themselves and understand how the worker deals with the affects caused in the daily health. A qualitative search of descriptive character was carried out, which followed the methodological assumptions of the exploration of the multiplicity of sources, in which four nursing techniques from a large hospital in the south of Brazil participated in a device called Tent of the Tale. It was opportune that they tell their “affections” in the encounter with the world, dialoguing with the events in the daily work and life, this allowed the researcher to dialogue with the micropolitics, with the stories of each worker/researcher and to narrate their Tent. The results came from the approximations in the reports and brought some reflections about the contrasts of health work and the details of the relational process in the care plan, where caring for oneself was present in the daily life through: self knowledge, “to “engineer” in work environment, cooperation between the team and activities outside of the work environment. The results also mention that women workers take care of themselves through meetings, micropolitics, cooperation, recognition of the other, self-government and the resignification of suffering. To deal with the affects caused they producing links and realize new constructions. It was observed that the Workers 'Health Services could better contribute to workers' health, if the logic of organizing these services was based on processes that take this as central. It is hoped that this research would have contributed to a new vision of what is the care of oneself in the daily work of health.

Taylor i välfärden : Arbetsstudier i svensk sjukvård 1944–1960 / Taylorism in the welfare sector : Work studies in the Swedish healthcare sector 1944–1960

Skriveus, Gerhard January 2022 (has links)
In this paper I analyse the first use of work studies in Swedish hospitals, between 1944 and 1960. The overall purpose of the study is to increase the knowledge of how Taylorism was introduced in the Swedish welfare state. The operational purpose is to increase the knowledge of how tayloristicwork studies influenced the health service and its employees, and how the health service influenced the tayloristic methods and the engineers who conducted the work studies. In the early 1940s, the shortage of trained staff and raising costs became motivations for rationalising Swedish healthcare. The idea of using work studies as a method of rationalisation was driven by the state, in contrast both to early attempts in the US as well as when Taylorism was introduced in Swedish industry. This "push" from the state, rather than a "pull" from hospitals and the fact that only five engineers were working on work studies in the entire healthcare sector, are the reasons why work studies did not produce any measurable economic results. To be able to use work studies at the hospitals, the engineers made major changes to the original tayloristic methods. All movement studies were scrapped, and four out of ten rationalisation proposals were not based on traditional Taylorism. All groups, except doctors, were studied but a difference can be seen from 1955 when rationalisation proposals were directed only at the supportfunctions. The reason for this was that the engineers worked on behalf of the regional councils, which steered the engineers away from direct care and towards support functions such as laundry. The professional identity of Swedish engineers after the First World War focused on cooperation, neutrality, problem solving and fact-based decisions. The same professional identity can be seen for the engineers in the healthcare sector, who also actively used their professional identity as an argument why their work could contribute to the healthcare system and its rationalisation. After 1960, Taylorism gained more ground in Swedish healthcare and the work studies most likely played a role in this, but it was not until hospitals were more industrialised that Taylorism was widely disseminated in the healthcare sector. It is, therefore, hard to say that it was the work studies that led to the industrialisation of hospitals in Sweden.

To speak or not to speak : A critical discourse analysis of course literature on so called honor related violence

Yilmaz, Melis, Nordström, Tove January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to analyze the different discourses linked to so called honor related violence in course literature from term 1 through 6 during the fall of 2018 at the department of social work at Stockholm university. This due to the extensive debates on the subject that implies varied opinions from both media and the research community. To analyze the different discourses, Fairclough's critical discourse analysis is used by looking for modality, transitivity and intertextuality in the different texts. The analysis circles around three different discourses. One is the “us and them” discourse, which differentiates the Swedish ideals from “others” which are portrayed as worse. The second discourse handles “critique against polarization”, which can be connected to post colonialism that criticizes the “us and them” discourse. The third discourse is the “precautionary” discourse that can be connected to social constructionism, whereas the texts leave room for interpretation as they rarely make any certain statements. Throughout all of these discourses we also found that the perpetrator and the victim rarely is spoken of when talking honor related violence, as compared to “normal violence”, and more often structural explanations rather than individual ones were used.
