The Relation between Globalization and Personal Values across 53 Countries and 28 YearsCozma, Irina Florentina 01 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to examine the relation between the change in globalization and change in personal values (work and general life values). An analysis across 28 years and 53 countries suggests that changes in different personal values have different relations with the change in globalization. Moreover, this relation is influenced by the demographic characteristics of the sample. The present research contributes to the literature in the following ways: 1) linking globalization (an economic concept) and personal values (a psychological concept), 2) providing an analysis of the relation between the change in personal values and the change in globalization across 28 years and 53 countries, 3) using an objective measure of globalization to examine the globalization phenomenon, and 4) including a large number of personal values (12 values) which provides a rich source of information.

CULTURAL VALIDITY AND SPECIFICITY OF WORK VALUES AMONG ASIAN AMERICAN COLLEGE STUDENTSZhang, Qianhui 01 August 2015 (has links)
The long-standing phenomenon of occupational segregation among Asian Americans in the United States has been well-documented (e.g., Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013). This study will explore the validity of an existing measure on values in the context of work, among a group of Asian American college students. Furthermore, it examines the impact of work values on culturally specific factors (i.e., Asian cultural values, ethnic identity endorsement, racism-related stress) and major-related outcome variables (i.e., major choice, major satisfaction) among Asian American college students. Specifically, it is hypothesized that work values will mediate the relationships between three cultural variables (i.e., adherence to Asian cultural values, ethnic identity endorsement, and racism-related stress) and individual’s major-related outcomes (i.e., major choice and major satisfaction). Participants will include 200 Asian-American identified undergraduate college students over the age of 18, surveyed through college courses, social media, and email advertisement. Measures will include the Values Scale (VS; Super & Nevill, 1985); the Asian American Value Scale-Multidimensional (AAVS-M; Kim, Li, & Ng, 2005); the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure - Revised (MEIM-R; Phinney & Ong, 2007); the Asian American Racism-Related Stress Inventory (AARRSI; Liang, Li, & Kim, 2004); and the Academic Major Satisfaction Scale (AMSS; Nauta, 2007). Implications of this study include illuminating the role of cultural context in shaping the function of work value endorsement and major choice patterns of Asian American college students, as well as advancing vocational assessment scholarship by establishing the cultural validity of the existing Values scale in its use with the Asian American college population.

Nas últimas décadas, o número de processos de fusão e aquisição de empresas é crescente, especialmente ao se considerar o setor bancário. Diversos autores associam o insucesso destes processos às inconsistências culturais das organizações. Cada uma das instituições envolvidas apresenta uma cultura organizacional própria, com valores distintos, o que ao mesmo tempo confere identidade à organização e torna complexa a integração entre as empresas. Os valores da organização são transmitidos através do processo de socialização, e, para que os novos membros façam efetivamente parte da instituição, eles devem apreender e internalizar esses valores. Ainda que em um grau bem menor, os indivíduos também levam os seus valores à organização. Dado que o tema de valores do trabalho vem sendo amplamente estudado, já que o trabalho é central na vida das pessoas e que os valores são importantes forças motivacionais, o objetivo deste trabalho consistiu em, após um processo de aquisição entre bancos, realizar uma comparação dos valores relativos ao trabalho dos empregados oriundos da empresa adquirida e daqueles que já pertenciam à empresa incorporadora, verificando se há diferenças significativas entre os grupos. O estudo utilizou como variáveis de controle a idade do respondente, o tempo de casa, gênero e cargo, para identificar a influência da geração, tempo de internalização da cultura, papel social e liderança. A população contempla os funcionários do Estado de São Paulo, tanto os oriundos da instituição incorporada, como aqueles já ingressantes pelo banco adquirente. O instrumento de pesquisa utilizado neste estudo foi a Escala de Valores do Trabalho Revisada (EVT-R), que foi escolhida por mostrar-se adequada ao estudo e ter sido testada e validada para a realidade brasileira. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de websurvey e a amostra final foi composta de 535 respondentes. Os dados foram tratados utilizando o SPSS para a realização de análises estatísticas, entre elas análise fatorial e ANOVA. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os dois grupos de origem, o que aponta para que o processo de socialização e integração de pessoas tenha sido muito bemsucedido, resultando em valores compartilhados. As diferenças encontradas relacionam-se principalmente às variáveis demográficas de controle, corroborando com os resultados de grande parte dos estudos que comparam os valores de trabalho entre gêneros, idade ou geração, tempo de casa e liderança. Espera-se com este trabalho ter contribuído para a geração de conhecimento no estudo de valores relativos ao trabalho associados a processos de fusões e aquisições, além de despertar o interesse para a realização de trabalhos futuros nesta área. / In recent decades, the number of mergers and acquisitions is increasing, especially when considering the banking sector. Several authors associate the failure of these processes to inconsistency of cultural organizations. Each institution involved has its own organizational culture, with different values, which simultaneously gives identity to the organization and makes complex integration between companies. The organization\'s values are transmitted through the socialization process, and so that new members effectively part of the institution, they should learn and internalize these values. Although on a much smaller degree, individuals also bring their values to the organization. Since the theme of work values has been widely studied since the work is central to people\'s lives and the values that are important motivational forces, the objective of this study was to, after a process of acquisition between banks, to make a comparison of work values of employees from the acquired company and those who have belonged to the incorporating company, checking for significant differences between groups. The study used as control variables the age of the respondent, the tenure, gender and position, to identify the influence of generation, time to internalize the culture, social role and leadership. The population includes employees of the State of São Paulo, both arising from the merging institutions, like those already entering the acquiring bank. The research instrument used in this study was the Revised Work Values Scale (WVS-R), which was chosen for been adequate to the study and because it has been tested and validated for Brazil. Data collection was performed through websurvey and the final sample consisted of 535 respondents. The data were processed using SPSS to perform statistical analyzes, including factor analysis and ANOVA. No significant differences between the two groups of origin were found, which indicates that the process of socialization and integration of people have been very successful, resulting in shared values. The differences found relate mainly to demographic control variables, corroborating the results of most studies that compare the work values among gender, age or generation, homework time and leadership. It is hoped that this work have contributed to the generation of knowledge in the study of work values associated with mergers and acquisitions, as well as sparking interest for future work in this area.

Social Work Values And Hospital Culture: An Examination From A Competing Values FrameworkEvans, Amanda 01 January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to assess the perceptions of social workers employed in Florida hospitals in relation to the core values of their profession and the alignment of those values within the culture of their current work setting. The conceptual framework for the study was from organizational behavior theory specific to culture, values, and trust. The Competing Values Framework (Cameron & Quinn, 1999) provided a method to distinguish co-existing competing values within an organization. The research findings indicated that 65% of the professional social workers who participated in the study perceived that the core values of their profession are very much in alignment with the written mission statement of their hospital. However, less than half of the respondents (42%) stated the daily business of the hospital strongly reflected the mission statement. The social workers perceived the current culture of hospitals in Florida as being closely clustered among four cultures: clan, adhocracy, market, and hierarchy. However, they would prefer a stronger clan culture and less of a market culture in the future. A large majority (85%) of all respondents communicated that their work assignments allowed them to demonstrate their professional values on a regular basis. However, only 63% stated that they trusted that their hospital valued the knowledge and skills of their profession.

Background: Effective employer branding helps attract and retain top talent, leading to overall success. Work values play a significant role in job preferences and satisfaction. Understanding the work values of Generation Z, is crucial for appealing to them. By aligning employer branding with Generation Z's work values, companies can attract and engage this generation known for its adaptability, autonomy, interconnectedness, collaboration, and speed. Understanding and addressing these work values provides valuable insights for effectively targeting Generation Z. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore what Generation Z is attracted to and values in an employer. Methodology: This thesis adopted a qualitative and inductive approach to address its purpose and research question. The study involved conducting ten semi-structured interviews using non-probability sampling. Prior to the interviews, the researchers conducted theoretical research and identified eight values representing work values. These values served as the core of the study and formed the basis for developing interview questions. Findings: The result of this thesis showed that the values that Generation Z values most in an employer are: flexibility, organizational values, development, and career opportunities. Conclusion: Generation Z individuals highly value flexibility, prioritizing flexible working hours, remote work options, and the ability to manage their own time. They also emphasize organizational values, such as a supportive work culture, effective communication, and positive relationships with colleagues. Furthermore, responsibility, development and growth opportunities within the workplace are essential for their job satisfaction.

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka framträdande arbetsrelaterade värderingar hos generation Y. Urvalet bestod av tio yrkesverksamma respondenter födda mellan 1984 – 1994 utvalda via bekvämlighetsurval. En kvalitativ design tillämpades med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Insamlade data analyserades genom tematisk analys och författarna fann tre huvudteman som kan förklara värderingar hos generation Y: arbetets centralitet, sociala värderingar och kommunikation samt motivation. Framträdande arbetsvärderingar för respondenterna var balans i livet, utvecklingsmöjligheter och möjligheten att skräddarsy sitt arbete. / The purpose of this study was to investigate prominent work values of generation Y. Ten working respondents born between 1984 – 1994 participated by convenience sampling. A qualitative research design was used together with semi structured interviews. Collected data were analysed with thematic analysis and the authors found three main themes that could explain values within generation Y: work centrality, social values and communication and motivation. Prominent work values for respondents consisted of: work life balance, development opportunities, and the ability to customize their work.

O objetivo geral da presente pesquisa foi analisar a organização dos valores relativos ao trabalho de pesquisadores em uma instituição de P&D brasileira, definindo-se a hierarquia desses valores para tais profissionais. Estudos têm evidenciado lacunas em dados empíricos sobre a gestão de pesquisadores em organizações inovadoras, sendo este recurso humano envolvido estritamente com uma crucial estratégia competitiva: a inovação. Através da compreensão dos valores pessoais laborais dos pesquisadores em organizações de P&D, torna-se possível avaliar o que esses profissionais consideram importante em seu ambiente de trabalho, subsidiando conhecimento aos gestores de trabalhadores do conhecimento. Tais achados permitem a discussão de ferramentas de gestão mais adequadas, possibilitando melhorias organizacionais. Assim, após análise de validade de instrumento com o objetivo de medir, levantar e analisar valores relativos ao trabalho (Escala revisada de Valores Relativos ao Trabalho EVT-R) para a amostra estudada, 208 pesquisadores de uma organização de P&D participaram da fase quantitativa deste estudo. A fim de produzir evidências mais consistentes, também foram entrevistados seis pesquisadores de uma das unidades da organização estudada. Por meio de análises estatísticas, os resultados encontrados possibilitaram a compreensão dos valores do trabalho dos pesquisadores, bem como suas prioridades axiológicas laborais, sendo essas definidas pela seguinte sequência: Relações Sociais, Realização Profissional, Estabilidade e Prestígio. Através de análise de conteúdo das entrevistas semiestruturadas foi possível constatar a influência dos valores laborais como norteadores do comportamento dos pesquisadores em seu ambiente de trabalho e enriquecer as evidências encontradas. Finalmente, implicações e limitações do estudo foram levantadas e discutidas. / The main objective of this study was to analyze the structure of the work values of researchers in a Brazilian research and development organization, defining the hierarchy of values for these professionals. Studies have shown gaps in empirical data on the management of researchers in innovative organizations, being this human resource strictly concerned with a crucial competitive strategy: the innovation. Through understanding of the personal work values of the researchers in R&D organizations, it becomes possible to assess what these professionals consider important in their work environment, supporting knowledge to managers of knowledge workers. These findings allow to discuss the most appropriate management tools, enabling organizational improvements. Thus, after analysis of instrument validity in order to measure, analyze and raise work values (Revised Work Values Scale WVS-R) for the sample, 208 researchers from an R&D organization participated in the quantitative phase of this study. In order to produce more consistent evidences, six researchers from an unit of the organization studied were also interviewed. By means of statistical analyzes, the results provided an understanding of the work values of researchers and their work values priorities, defined by the following sequence: Social Relations, Professional Achievement, Stability and Prestige. Through content analysis of semistructured interviews was possible to observe the influence of work values as guiding the behavior of researchers in their workplace and enrich the evidences found. Finally, implications and limitations of the study were raised and discussed.

Saliência de papel é a importância que uma pessoa atribui a um papel em relação aos demais papéis que desempenha no seu contexto social e alguma saliência no papel de trabalhador é requerida para se realizar escolhas adequadas de carreira. A presente tese objetivou identificar e compreender padrões de saliência para uma amostra de adultos brasileiros e verificar algumas associações entre saliência no papel de trabalhador e outras dimensões do desenvolvimento de carreira em adultos. Foram realizados três estudos. O primeiro adaptou e validou para uma amostra brasileira de adultos o Inventário de Saliência, que avalia saliência a partir das dimensões participação (envolvimento ativo com atividades no papel), comprometimento (ligação afetiva ao papel) e expectativa de valor (expectativa de realização de valores no papel), para cinco papéis principais: estudo, trabalho, serviço comunitário, casa e família e tempo livre. O segundo verificou padrões de saliência nos papéis de trabalhador e familiares e especialmente no papel conjugal e parental, e seu impacto na satisfação no trabalho entre homens e mulheres casados e com filhos e homens e mulheres solteiros e sem filhos. O terceiro verificou associações entre saliência no papel de trabalhador, valores de trabalho e tarefas de desenvolvimento de carreira. Os estudos foram realizados a partir de uma coleta única, constituída de 111 homens e 388 mulheres, com idades entre 21 e 65 anos, com nível superior de escolaridade. De forma ampla, os resultados apontaram para adequação do Inventário de Saliência, que demonstrou boas qualidades psicométricas e sensibilidade às mudanças no contexto de vida e trabalho: estudo como parte integrante do papel de trabalhador e algumas mudanças nos padrões de saliência tradicionais de gênero. Alta saliência no papel de trabalhador associou-se a maior importância aos valores de trabalho em geral e, especialmente, realização profissional, bem como a maior satisfação no trabalho e maior envolvimento nas tarefas de exploração e gerenciamento da carreira. Discute-se a importância da avaliação da saliência nas intervenções de carreira, as limitações dos estudos e recomenda-se temas para pesquisas futuras. / Role salience is the importance one gives to a role among other roles that one performs in his /her social context, and a certain amount of some work role salience is required in order to achieve adequate career choices. The present thesis aimed to identify and understand salience patterns in a Brazilian sample of adults and verify some associations between work role salience and other dimensions of career development in adults. Three studies were conducted. The first one adapted and validated the Salience Inventory, which measures salience from three dimensions: participation (active involvement to a role), commitment (affective attachment to a role) and value expectation (values expected to be found in a role) to five major roles: study, work, community service, home and family and spare time. The second study verified salience patterns on work and family roles, especially the marital and parental roles and its impact on work satisfaction among two groups: between married men and women with children / single men and women without children. The third study verified associations between work role salience, work values and career development tasks. The sample of participants comprised 111 men and 388 women with a college education, ages from 21 to 65 years old. The results showed that the Salience Inventory was adequate, that it had good psychometric properties and sensibility to work and life context changes: studying was regarded as part of the worker role and some changes in the traditional gender salience patterns were noticed. High work salience was associated with a bigger importance attributed to working values in general; mainly work achievement, work satisfaction and exploration and management career tasks. The importance of salience assessment to career interventions and study limitations is discussed and issues for further research are recommended.

The workforce is diverse on gender, race, ethnicity, culture, work styles, and age. Employees from different generations have varying expectations of what they value from the workplace and therefore approach work differently. Generational differences can lead to mistrust and communication breakdowns. They can also impact job satisfaction and productivity. The Generational Cohort Theory was utilized in this nonexperimental study, and the sample was recruited from CB Richard Ellis Real Estate Group. The purpose of this study was to determine the work values differences among the 4 generational cohorts: Silent, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. The research questions for this quantitative study first identified the preferred work values, utilizing the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire (MIQ), and sought if there was a statistically significant means difference in those preferred values from 1 generation to another. A 1-way MANOVA was used to analyze the effect of generation cohort affiliation with preferred work values, revealing a positive relationship between cohort and preferred work values. Results indicated that some work values are unique between generations, such as being busy all the time and doing things for other people, and some are shared, including telling people what to do and having good coworkers. Additional research is needed to address the gap in current literature in the areas of autonomy and recognition. The implications for social change include acquiring a greater knowledge of similarities and differences between older and younger workers.. This knowledge is essential for building high-performing teams, for successful recruitment, and employee retention.
