Spirituality of Kenyan pastors : a practical theological study of Kikuyu PCEA pastors in Nairobi

Park, Sung Kyu 31 October 2008 (has links)
The subject of spirituality is descriptive, comprehensive, transformative, and interdisciplinary. This study is about the spirituality of Kikuyu PCEA (Presbyterian Church of East Africa) pastors in Nairobi. This research seeks to find expressions and meanings of Christian spirituality of the research context. Thus, the concrete aims of this research are: (1) to understand the complex spiritual/religious/cultural world of Kikuyu pastors of the Presbyterian Church in Nairobi; (2) to study biblical and historical spirituality in order to find biblical and Western-historical spiritual perspectives; (3) to have critical hermeneutical dialogue between narratives, different cultural/religious traditions, biblical/Western-historical spiritual perspectives, and African theological perspectives with a view to finding strategies for transformation of the research participants, churches in Africa, and African society at large. To achieve the aforementioned aims of this research, a research paradigm was employed which is comprised of postfoundationalism, practical theology, narrative, and social constructionism. Postfoundationalism provided theological positioning; practical theological process laid a framework of the research as the main research methodology; narratives generated essential experiences for the research; social constructionism provided a method with which to form the realities socially which would have a relevance to the context. Thick questions were formulated from the following studies: the narratives of the research participants, African (Kikuyu) cultural/religious traditions, Christianity’s influences on the research context, and the socio-economic-political phenomena of the Kenyan society. The questions were: (1) Would mission Christianity including the Presbyterian Church of East Africa continue to be an effective form of Christianity in Kenya and among the Kikuyu?; (2) What is the relationship between charismatic spirituality and the contextual spirituality of East Africa?; (3) How can spirituality shape and influence the socio-economic-political context more than it being influenced by the context?; (4) What would the biblical and historical spirituality suggest to the spiritualities of the research participants? In regards to biblical/historical spiritualities, the spiritualities of both Old and New Testament and each historical period were unique, and the spirituality of each period was developed distinctively by the needs of the time. Then the fusion of horizons between the research context and biblical/historical spiritualities turned out to be a valuable process for the making of the final strategies for transformation. The strategies for transformation reflect the essential elements of African Christian spirituality, which can be applied to the African socio-religious context beyond the scope of the current research arena. Christian spirituality in the 21st century Africa demands African expression and identity whether it means contextualisation, liberation, or reconstruction. Structures, governance, forms, and expressions of the Christianity of the past century need to be re-evaluated for the formation of authentic African Christian spirituality. African society faces tremendous challenges and pressures providing Christianity with both an unprecedented privilege and obligation to impact African society with the message of love and hope. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

The River, the Railroad Tracks, and the Towers: How Residents’ Worldview and Use Value Transformed Wilton Manors into a Diverse, Gay-friendly, Urban Village

Ergon-Rowe, Emma E. 10 November 2011 (has links)
This case study examines the factors that shaped the identity and landscape of a small island-urban-village between the north and south forks of the Middle River and north of an urban area in Broward County, Florida. The purpose of the study is to understand how Wilton Manors was transformed from a “whites only” enclave to the contemporary upscale, diverse, and third gayest city in the U.S. by positing that a dichotomy for urban places exists between their exchange value as seen by Logan and Molotch and the use value produced through everyday activity according to Lefebvre. Qualitative methods were used to gather evidence for reaching conclusions about the relationship among the worldview of residents, the tension between exchange value and use value in the restructuration of the city, and the transformation of Wilton Manors at the end of the 1990s. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 21 contemporary participants. In addition, thirteen taped CDs of selected members of founding families, previously taped in the 1970s, were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. My findings indicate that Wilton Manors’ residents share a common worldview which incorporates social inclusion as a use value, and individual agency in the community. This shared worldview can be traced to selected city pioneers whose civic mindedness helped shape city identity and laid the foundation for future restructuration. Currently, residents’ quality of life reflected in the city’s use value is more significant than exchange value as a primary force in the decisions that are made about the city’s development. With innovative ideas, buildings emulating the new urban mixed-use design, and a reputation as the third gayest city in the United States, Wilton Manors reflects a worldview where residents protect use value as primary over market value in the decisions they make that shape their city but not without contestation.

Places of Tradition, Places of Research: The Evaluation of Traditional Medicine Workshops Using Culturally and Locally Relevant Methods

Barwin, Lynn January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines how traditional medicine workshops offered by an Aboriginal health centre contribute to capacity re-building through self-care in two local communities in Manitoulin Island, Ontario. Health disparities that exist between Aboriginal people and the rest of the population have prompted a need to better understand health determinants that are of relevance in these communities including the importance of culture, tradition, and self-determination. A variety of qualitative methods were employed in this work including in-depth interviews, focus groups and “art voice.” The use of art voice on Manitoulin Island advances decolonizing methodologies by emphasizing how the incorporation of locally and culturally relevant methods or “methods-in-place,” is an effective way to engage communities in the research process. Results show the need to approach traditional teachings, health programs, and research from an Aboriginal worldview and indicate that more frequent workshops are required to empower youth and adults to practice and share traditional knowledge. Furthermore, a continuum exists in which the interest in language, culture, and tradition increases with age. Capacity can therefore be re-built over time within communities promoting autonomy and self-determination through self-care. Findings can be expected to further inform the traditional programming in participating communities, enhance existing Aboriginal determinants of health models by including traditional medicine as an element of self-care, and can act as a springboard for the inclusion of unique place-based methods into community-based research projects in the future.

Centro de Investigación de Restauración y Conservación del Patrimonio Material de la Ciudad de Ayacucho / Center of Investigation in Restauration and Conservation of the Material Heritage of Ayacucho

Guillén Zambrano, María Alejandra 16 December 2020 (has links)
This area is currently a focus of vulnerability, it set out to create pockets of collective space intervention and integration that allow an environment that connects that integrates to its urban and natural edges of the place, creating a safe environment and an area Reactivated. A research center is proposed in techniques of restoration of furniture heritage and popular art, since the environment responds to this use, being within the historic center, in a neighborhood with a high cultural index and in turn a purely artisanal neighborhood. In order that the ancestral artisanal techniques that are now considered Ayacucho’s material heritage are investigated and tested for better management of the local heritage, starting from an ancestral cosmogonic knowledge of the artisans and reaching a technical and researched knowledge of restoration. The project, considering as a Research Center for the Restoration and Conservation of Ancient Techniques, is prioritized as an emphasis on the Andean worldview. It is governed in 3 large areas: Public (HURIN PLAZA), Semipublic (KAI PLAZA), Private (HANAN PLAZA). Starting from the high Andean knowledge of the 3 pillars of the reinterpreted worldview to knowledge, such as those of The APUS (visuals and connections of the 3 viewpoints of the area with that of the project), YAQU (Internal Irrigation Works, Project Sustainability), ALLPA (Land Works and Different Technical Contributions (TAPIAL and BTC)), connected, by PACARINAS, being the connection between the different concepts of underland worlds - terrestrial and ancestral. / Tesis

Carried out throughout 2019, this study aims to investigate the reasons for low representation of male teachers in primary level education in Peru. For our research, we utilized a qualitative approach by interviewing a group of fifteen teachers from public, private, rural, and urban schools in Peru. Afterwards, we completed an inductive analysis that indicated the presence of gender roles and stereotypes linked to teaching practices and singularities depending on the geographical space in which they work. From the analysis, we identified the impact of the Andean worldview principles on the roles assumed by male teachers within the community and the risk perception of educational agents regarding physical contact between male teachers and students, variables according to the age of the latter. Research topics should be studied in more depth. / Tess

Portales Canedo, Alejandra Sofía 02 December 2021 (has links)
The research focuses on the approach to a fashion collection that comes from the theoretical and visual study of the three Andean worlds. Exploratory study of psychological distress as understood by Pentecostal pastors

Mabitsela, Lethabo 18 February 2003 (has links)
The study is an exploratory investigation of Pentecostal pastors' perceptions on psychological distress, using grounded theory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five senior pastors, of Pentecostal churches in Soshanguve township located near Pretoria in South Africa. Data was analysed using open, axial and selective qualitative research methods. Verification of the results by the participants enhanced the validity and reliability of the research. Results indicate that there seems to be certain similarities between the established frameworks in psychology and the worldview of pastors with regard to psychological distress. It seems as if the pastors share common views about psychological distress with the medical, interpersonal and cognitive schools of thought. Therefore, psychological distress would be regarded as impairment in the social and occupational life spheres. The pastors' referral patterns and strategies to deal with religious clients' psychological distress are discussed, as well as their limitations as mental health care workers for their communities. It is suggested that, to bring psychological services to the black community, psychologists form collaborative relationships with Pentecostal pastors. / Thesis (MA(Clinical Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2003. / Psychology / unrestricted

Interdisciplinary Worldview Studies within the High-School Curriculum for Religious Education in Sweden

Älverbrandt, Daniel R. January 2016 (has links)
Worldview studies among high-school students is a strategic way of building an attitude of respect and dialogue between citizens in the increasingly multi-cultural society of Sweden. First of all, academic research by professors in philosophy and education from different countries, express the importance of worldview studies among students. Secondly, established experience in several educational institutes, as well as among many students, confirm that worldview studies leads to better understanding of self and others. Thirdly, with the increasing number of immigrants in Sweden, there is a great need of constructive forums for dialogue concerning different worldviews. Considering academic research, established experience as well as the immigration crisis in Sweden this essay investigates and argues the thesis that an increased emphasis on worldview studies within the Swedish high-school curriculum is a strategic and pedagogical way of building bridges of dialogue and respect in our society.
