Professional Development Among Brigham Young University Faculty

Robinson, Elizabeth Ann 01 April 2019 (has links)
This thesis is a qualitative research study examining views of faculty at Brigham Young University regarding professional development at the university level. Subjects who participated in the study were selected based on being full-time, part-time, adjunct, tenured, and non-tenured professors at Brigham Young University. Instructors who work solely with online students were not included. The contacts also did not include student teachers, support staff, non-teaching faculty or graduate students. The key findings from the qualitative research study report that faculty differentiate between two categories of professional development, one concerned with teaching and other aspects of working at a university, and the other is the development and continuing training in their original field or specialty. Additionally, the research shows that while time is the most commonly cited reason for not attending professional development, it is possible to potentially offer incentives to overcome that barrier to attendance. Professional development activities that are created in an informal manner and are more localized to smaller units within the university-a college, a department, even a subset of a department-seem to be more meaningful to faculty than traditional formally organized professional development by the university. The overall conclusion from this qualitative research study is that professional development activities should be more flexible and adaptive to the maturation of needs of the intended participants. The current initial professional development at Brigham Young University is viewed positively as being very helpful; however, the longer faculty stay at the university the more they seek out informal professional development focused on specific issues for which they are not finding assistance. The implication of this study is when universities focus on initial professional development for new faculty often professional development opportunities for mid-career faculty are not emphasized or arranged. Ways to address this gap may include specifically labeling activities like seminars as professional development and then increasing resources devoted to them or giving faculty an allowance per person per year and allowing them to choose how to invest that allowance-either in more training within the teaching profession or within their specific discipline.

Birds of the Brigham Young University campus

Mukherjee, Barid Baran 01 June 1956 (has links)
This paper deals with the seasonal distribution, relative abundance, and location of the different species of birds which visit or live on the Brigham Young University campus from late summer to early spring, with a brief account of their activities. The upper campus, where this investigation was carried on, covers an area of 201 acres and is situated on a bench at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. The study was continued from July 13, 1955 to April 15, 1956. A total of 173 hours was devoted to census work and to studying the general ecology of the area. Four to five censuses were taken in each month of study. In order to measure the relative abundance, the total number of each species seen per hour was calculated. The location of each species found during this study was plotted on an outline map of the campus. Fifty-five different kinds of birds were seen on the campus during this study. The Western Robin, English Sparrow, California Quail, Song Sparrow and Red-shafted Flicker were seen constantly in every month of study. The Red Crossbill and Sage Hen, two most uncommon species in this area, were observed. The maximum number of species was found in July, and the minimum in December. Nests of House Finch, Western Robin, Blackheaded Grosbeak, Song Sparrow, Long-tailed Chat, California Quail, Mourning Dove, Pine Siskin, Starling and English Sparrow were found in this study area. New arrivals were noticed in every month. The majority of these species, as well as individuals, were located in the tree area bordering the canal. From this study it was found that the Brigham Young University campus provides a very suitable habitat for many species of birds. Ample cover, food, and water are available, and firearms are prohibited. The movement of students and other traffic about the campus does not seem to hamper the birds in their normal activities to any appreciable degree.

[en] PERCEPTION OF AFFECTION IN THE FAMILY AND THE INCIDENCE OF ANXIETY SYMPTOMS IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FROM RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] PERCEPÇÃO DE AFETIVIDADE NO NÚCLEO FAMILIAR E A INCIDÊNCIA DE SINTOMATOLOGIA DE ANSIEDADE EM JOVENS UNIVERSITÁRIOS DO RIO DE JANEIRO

HELLEN NICOLE CONSTANTINO ARANDA 25 April 2024 (has links)
[en] Considering the fact that emerging adults during the university period present themselves as a group especially vulnerable to cases of anxiety, a study was conducted with the objective of evaluating possible associations between affections experienced by subjects in their family environment and anxious symptoms, based on the theoretical foundation of the Bioecological Model of Human Development. From this perspective, affective aspects relating to the family microsystem of 240 university students between 18 and 25 years of age (MD = 21; AI = 4) were prioritized, with 120 coming from public institutions and 120 coming from private institutions. All subjects were assessed using the Scale of Emotions Experienced in a Family Environment (BEAF), as well as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7). Correlational analyzes and tests between contrasting groups were performed. The results indicate significant correlations between the quality of family affection perceived by the participants and the incidence of anxiety symptoms. The higher the score regarding negative affects perceived within the family environment, the higher the total anxiety score reported by the subjects, configuring a positive correlation of moderate magnitude (Spearman correlation =0,472 (level 0,01 two ends); Spearman correlation<0,001). Female participants reported a greater perception of negative affectivity in the family environment, also presenting more symptoms of anxiety. Subjects belonging to socioeconomically disadvantaged families also demonstrated a greater perception of negative affects in the family environment. The findings of this work reaffirm the relationship between affectivity and mental health and alert to the need for greater care with family affective relationships. It is expected that mental health promotion policies will be developed in the future considering the association of such factors, in order to prevent some symptomatic manifestations in this population.

These relations influence people in their way of communicating and consuming. Through this paper we seek to understand the processes of communication and the building of the identity of the young university student, being understood here as an actor for modern consumption. The theoretical basis for this research lies in working out the concepts of communication and consumption, culture and identity. We analyzed the movements of communication and consumption from the use by the young university student of mobile telephony and cell phones. Consumption and citizenship are dealt with using the concepts of Garcia Canclini, who sees consumption as one of the dimensions of the communication process and social belonging. In Featherstone we notice reflections over the culture and consumption in the late modern times, context in which the young people make their presence. In order to write about technology and convergence culture present in practices and ways of communication of the young people, we used the ideas of Jenkins. Hall provides understanding of the building of the identity of the young university student as a complex and cultural process characterized by the ways of using, consuming and communicating, typical of mobile telephony. The adopted methodology for this paper uses, besides the bibliographic research, a quantitative mapping with the goal of obtaining data on the cultural consumption of the young university student. The tools used for this mapping were structured questionnaires, which were run in colleges of the capital and countryside areas of the state of São Paulo. The mapping was useful to obtain elements dealt with in the interviews that were carried out to identify the attribution of meaning given by young people to consumption of cell phones, taking into consideration the theoretical reflections discussed in the bibliographic research. It was possible, then, to identify the presence of cell phones in the common relations of the young people and we have identified the processes of the building of identity. In the general aspect of this paper, we had as a result the fact that the young people have in their cell phones a tool that goes beyond the material and functional usage. The cell phone is a person s telephone. In it we can find parts of the identity of its users in the personalization of content.

And, more specifically: to analyze the official proposals for high school in national, state and municipal level of Teresina, as a curriculum former for the teaching of Geography; to identify the city and the urban as contents for the teaching of Geography in the contexts of the ENEM and of the didactic books of Geography for the high school; to know the socioeconomic profile of the recently admitted young university student from the UFPI-Teresina, as subjects of this research; to verify components of high school in relation to the geographic knowledge present in the understanding of university students in relation to the geographic space of the city of Teresina; And to define guiding elements of curricular guidelines for the teaching of Geography, in view of citizen practices. For this, the research used as main theoretical and methodological references Vygotsky (2000, 2007) and Cavalcanti (2005, 2008, 2012, 2014a). The work of these authors, together with other writers, contributed to the formatting and use of the following instruments: documentary research, research in the tests of ENEM, research in didactic books, questionnaire for young recently admitted, activity for the verification of scientific and everyday knowledge, as well as discussion groups; besides the analyzes which were being structured according to the collect of information. In this context, the qualitative approach was used for the analysis, following the dialectical method. The research was conducted in Teresina, Campus Minister Petrônio Portela, UFPI, in 2015 and 2016, and had as subjects the recently admitted young college student in the courses of Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Laws, Pedagogy, Degree in Physical Education, Veterinary Medicine and Degree in Mathematics. Among the main conclusions, it was observed that the young people, although they were predominantly restricted to the empirical knowledge about the urban aspects and about the city of Teresina, they provided, at the same time, evidence of a high school which still persists in the search for positive results in tests that are used as quality national indicators. It’s the case, especially of ENEM, because this seems to be the option of the most schools in order to their students to be admitted in university. Furthermore, it was verified that a qualitative diagnosis stimulates the self evaluation of the young people and provides the necessary evidences to be able to analyze what they could internalize about the geographical knowledge during basic education, identifying, so, how was the process of teaching submitted to them.

The Memory and the Legacy: The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade-- The Young Company, 1974-2001

Crow, Ruthanne Lay 01 January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
“The Memory and The Legacy: The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company 1974-2001,” is a history of the children's theatre of Brigham Young University. The Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company acts as a training ground for graduate students working in theatre for young audiences. When directing a production for the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company, students are instructed to perform all functions required of a professional company. As the Whittlin' Whistlin' Brigade–The Young Company (WWB–TYC) spends much of its performance time on tour, those responsibilities are relegated to the student.Developed and headed by Dr. Harold R. Oaks of Brigham Young University, WWB–TYC produced children's theatre for local, regional, national and international audiences. The history includes production photos, budgets and business plans. A survey of former company members was conducted assessing the long-term affect on participants in relationship to their personal and professional life.

Front to the transformations in the world of work, the new familiar compositions, school trajectories and others social and cultural practices present in the contemporaries societies it has been intended to apprehend constituent elements of dimensions related to the different ways of being young. As subsidies to the analyses studies of Bourdieu (1983; 1990; 1994; 1999; 2003; 2004), the researches developed by Foracchi (1965), Sposito (1989), Romanelli (2003), Zago (2006) had been considered - those have dedicated to know young university students, their conditions of study, work and the influence of their families in the school adaptation process-, as well as the research of Brazilian Youth Profile (2005). The young workers scholarship holders which were investigated have revealed traces that were explicited during the decor of the inquiry, one of them has consisted in the belief of that, with the ownership of the diploma, they could ascend socially, allied to the will of being well succeeded in the professional career by the domain of the technologies. As regards to the way of being young: the students have lived few moments of leisure or rest; they guided their choices based on the education received by their parents; the religion was the way to get resistance to surpass the difficulties of life, at the same time the religious space served as place of meeting with other young people; they have believed that the work, besides subsidizing part of their expenditures, symbolically, also has had the meaning of dignity and responsibility. In the way of being young college student, they have noticed, among others, the existence of fetish in the relation with the microcomputer and around the domain of knowledge in computer science area; the using of Internet as source of reading and information. In this perspective, to remain themselves in the superior education the students have dipped into strategies, identified in their own stories: the devotion to the studies; the symbolic contribution of the family; the receiving of the benefit from SUP and the work. According to the comprehension of the existing relations among youth, superior education, family, religion and work, it was concluded that youth, especially, the young worker scholarship holder, necessarily, needs to construct strategies to remain himself in the scientific field of superior education.
