TEACHERS' PERCEPTIONS OF YOUTUBE AS A POTENTIAL LEARNING RESOURCE FOR ENGLISH EDUCATION IN LIBYA

Albaddi, Muhamed Ahmed 01 August 2013 (has links)
The present study investigated Libyan preparatory school English teachers' attitudes to, willingness to use, and familiarity with YouTube as a potential teaching tool. The methodology followed a survey design of twenty-five Likert-scale questions and four mixed-type questions. For the purpose, 124 teachers were randomly selected out of a population of 1,170 preparatory school teachers at 150 schools in Tripoli, the capital of Libya. The result revealed that the participants had positive attitudes to and willingness to use YouTube applications as a beneficial tool for teaching the English language in Libya. On the other hand, participants' level of familiarity with YouTube applications did not match their generally positive perceptions of the affordances of YouTube. They recognized their own lack of computer skills and emphasized the need for special training in order to be able to become effective implementers of YouTube and multimedia resources in general. Overall, participants recognized the importance of using technology in their classrooms and the benefits of YouTube as a potential learning resource for the educational system in Libyan schools. Their enthusiasm was not related to their age or marital status. That is, beyond age differences or marital status, participants demonstrated an open mindedness towards the adoption of multimedia technology in their teaching. These results have direct implications for the adoption of multimedia technology in Libyan schools. They show that Libyan teachers are not outsiders to the general tendencies in our contemporary world, where technological innovations are changing the way we teach and learn. However, the results also suggest that Libyan teachers need training in computer assisted language learning, access to computers and Internet in order to be able to embrace the challenges of the 21st century.

We Don't Need Cinderella: Changing Gender Identities on YouTube Comedy in India

Chaudhury, Sharmista 06 September 2017 (has links)
This paper analyses the emergent voices of young Indians in YouTube comedy sketches. As a format, YouTube comedy sketches have become popular among Indian youth for their ability to critique cultural norms, albeit with a sense of humor. Through a textual analysis of shows produced by YouTube comedy groups, this paper will survey the emergent voices in YouTube comedy and how they challenge mainstream Indian media. Comedy YouTube channels offer a humorous take on issues related to street harassment, marital rape, religion and politics. The content and design of the shows are aimed to dismantle existing portrayals of youth in Indian media and question tradition. The sketches usually show women and men redefining their identities and offering new perspectives on Indian issues by employing satire and parody. This paper therefore investigates how Indians are using humor to create traction for various issues and using YouTube as a platform to criticize gender norms.

/ Abstract : The web space has been increasingly used by deaf communities through video uploading platforms as a means of interaction and a repository of linguistic data. Currently, one can see the presence of an enormous variation and inconsistency in the criteria for recording, documentation, analysis and submission of sign language data to the academic community, especially on researches that make the web their data source. This research discusses the methodological procedures in the establishment of sign language corpora from the youtube.com platform, having the formation of a corpus of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) genre as a pilot project to elaborate and identify the main questions surrounding the constitution of a corpus from videos on the web. A brief discussion about genres in corpora is provided based on the data collection proposed on the research, as well as considerations about the ethical procedures adopted on the research on sign language. We developed a technical and qualitative analysis of the procedures adopted on the establishment of a video corpus based on the web, following the orientation given by Reppen, Koester, Thompson and Clancy (2010), Berber Sardinha (2004), Crasborn (2010, 2012), Dwyer (2006) and resorting to already composed corpora of Portuguese and sign languages. Preliminary results point to the possibility of using the web as a source for the establishment of corpora, once provided the adjustments for the purpose of research are considered, and the specific criteria to the chosen source of data are observed.

/ Abstract : Since the first electronic games, the development companies always bothered in instructing the players on how to use the controls with the objective to make the users have a good performance. Over the time, the games have become more complex requiring more ability and knowledge of the game by the players. Allied to this context, YouTube allows users to share videos that address, including the step by step used to perform various activities, among them, the play. Gamers like the Swedish PewDiePie and the Brazilian ?Zangado? use YouTube to share their ways to play video games. In this way, the general questions that guide the research sought to answer if the channels of gamer content of the YouTube have pedagogic elements that shape them as video classes in view of the audiovisual narrative, interactions and feedbacks of the presenter with his audience in the virtual rooms created to teach to play games? If so, what are these elements? How could they be categorized in order to contribute to the created narratives in the Distance Education? This paper presents the results of a research conducted in non-formal learning spaces. From the analysis of the Saga video ? ?Assassin's Creed: worth or not worth playing?, presented by the YouTuber Zangado, we sought to understand through the presenter?s performance, which existing elements that can set your video as a classroom. The theoretical framework comprises the guiding concepts of the research: literacies, pedagogical mediation and interaction. The methodological approach began in an exploratory research that aimed to identify YouTube channels whose content has as main focus the games analysis. Among the searched channels, we select the Zangado for having the largest number of followers on YouTube, and to be regarded in the media as the presenter of greater visibility in the category of games analysis of Brazil. The results showed that through the pedagogical mediation, Zangado addresses the contents in an efficient and effective way, helping other players in their processes of literacies of the games. The oral speech uses slangs and specific terms used by players, providing the approximation between the YouTuber and the viewer, and a more meaningful learning of the conceptual and procedural contents that are covered. The results that underlie our considerations, don?t conclude and don?t define the research, but we hope to serve as a reflection or to arouse the interest of other researchers to explore this very rich field of knowledge and yet so little mapped.

The social role of the so-called vloggers became evident among us during the last decade. Their videos become, in some cases, popular, being, in this case, shared and commented in everyday conversation in and outside the internet. We aim here to understand the character of the narratives and interventions of the mentioned vloggers, stressing the autobiographical marks they inscribe in this phenomenon. For this, we employ a hybrid methodology. Their YouTube videos are used as documental source, while the ideas of some researchers, as Paula Sibília, are invoked as theoretical references to conduct their examination. In sum, we stress the common features and formulas of their messages, specially the way their creators employ a sarcastic humor language to develop a critical commentary about our common circumstances.

No. of bitstreams: 1 000431693-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 2127574 bytes, checksum: 431179c350edb56b329ee0dcbd5214c9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011 / This work is a descriptive study of the video-mediated conversations in YouTube vlogs. By adopting a point of view that recognizes the importance of the imaginary and of everyday life, the research has applied the technique of case study upon the investigation of a Blade376‟s vlog and its 18 video responses. With the objective of describing the proper characteristics of this type of conversation and differentiating it from the text-mediated conversation on the internet, the study has investigated the audiovisual elements, the discourses, the conversation structures and the formats through which the videos are presented. The investigation has shown that the video-mediated conversations can present high coherence in topic approach as well as be favorable to the debate of complex matters; on the other hand, they are not characterized by the deepening of interpersonal relashinships and tend to favor loose social strands. Four important features of these conversations were highlighted: assincronicity, long discoursive blocks, multiplication of noise in the transmission of messages and ambiguity on the role of audiovisual elements, which can help either emphasize or disperse the content of the conversations. Manuel Castells, Henry Jenkins, Susan Herring and Lúcia Santaella are among the main authors this study was based on.
