Filosofia do judaísmo em Abraham Joshua Heschel: consciência religiosa, condição humana e Deus / Philosophy of judaism in Abraham Joshua Heschel: religious conscience, human condition and God

The Theology of Thomas Dick and its Possible Relationship to that of Joseph Smith

Jones, Edward T. 01 January 1969 (has links)
In her attempt to find a strictly human origin for certain doctrines contained in the Book of Abraham, and the later teachings of Joseph Smith, Mrs. Fawn M. Brodie relies upon the writings of one Thomas Dick. Dick was a nineteenth century Scottish scientist-theologian who wrote several volumes on religious and scientific subjects. It is known that at least two volumes were known to at least some of the early Latter-day Saints, for passages from them were quoted in the Messenger and Advocate. The purpose of this thesis has been to research the entire ten volumes of Dick's writings in order to determine the entirety of his theology. The paper first relates the life and general philosophy of Thomas Dick, and then investigates specifics of his theology under the general chapter headings of "God," "Man," and "Salvation." The final two chapters of the thesis deal with those specific aspects of Joseph Smith's theology which Mrs. Brodie claims were influenced by Dick's writings. The conclusion reached as a result of this study is: while it cannot be demonstrated that any of the Prophet's theology has any direct foundation in Thomas Dick's, there may have been impetus gained from Dick's writings in the direction Joseph Smith's theology took, but only if it could be demonstrated that Joseph Smith had read them, and this has not been done, by Mrs. Brodie, nor anyone else.

Abraham Shushan: In the Shadow of Huey Long

Burke, Brad J. 20 December 2018 (has links)
Abraham L. Shushan worked in the shadow of Huey P. Long. Long’s political machine ran on the force of his personality with political power given as a reward to those he considered loyal. Shushan was one such lieutenant who benefited from his unwavering loyalty to Long. Shushan served within the New Orleans political scene helping Long achieve his goals including building the Shushan Airport on the city’s lakefront as well as being instrumental in the construction of the seawall protecting New Orleans along the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain. By the time he started working for Long, Shushan was already a fixture in New Orleans politics serving on the Orleans Levee Board since 1920. A man of ambition and skill, Huey Long chose Shushan for his political acumen. Shushan’s work for Long cost him his career during the period of “scandal and reform” following the fallout after Long’s assassination in 1935.

Den potentiella människan : En undersökning av teorier om självförverkligande / The Potential Human : A Study of Theories of Self-realization

Nilsson, Staffan January 2005 (has links)

“What characterizes an acceptable theory of self-realization?” The thrust of the present dissertation is towards seeking an answer to this central problem, which stems from the fundamental human experience that life involves change, and that in a modern society such change is often expected to be towards a realization of potentials and the good life for the individual.

The dissertation has a three-fold purpose. The first is to clarify the content of five modern theories of self-realization from three academic fields. The theories are those of the psychologist Abraham H. Maslow, the philosophers Charles Taylor and Alan Gewirth, and the theologians Reinhold Niebuhr and Bernard Lonergan. These are methodologically studied by the help of seven analytical questions. The second purpose is to perform a lengthwise comparatative analysis of the five theories, the results of which lead to the third; namely to critically discuss several elements of the reality of human life which have proven to be missing or supressed in much of the material.

The theoretical framework for the dissertation runs along two axes: one concerns what is developed as a distinction between internalism and relationalism, and the other is to cast a critical light on the lack of attention paid by the the theories of self-realization to experiences which run counter to optimistic ideas of individual development, such as death, loss and dependence.

The dissertation concludes with an outline for a constructive position based on the necessity of a theory’s closeness to experience, and on the need for reconcilitation of what may seem to be unabridgeble in human life. A theory of self-realization must do more than formulate positive conditions for change. It must also take into consideration conditions that are not directly related to, and sometimes even run contrary to, realization of the self.

Emissions of organic compounds from technosphere articles : Measurements and modeling of mass transfer from consumer goods and building materials to air and water

Holmgren, Tomas January 2013 (has links)
This thesis describes the development of a generic model for predicting the emissions of organic compounds from materials used in the manufacture of various goods and products. Many products contain organic substances that are not bound to the matrix formed by their constituent materials and are thus able to dissociate from the material and become transferred into the surrounding environment. A wide range of materials and products are used in modern societies, and many compounds deriving from these materials are regarded as emerging pollutants in both indoor and outdoor environments. The model uses three components to describe the transfer of compounds from materials to the surrounding environment: partitioning of the compound between the material and its surroundings based on linear free energy relationships, diffusion within the material based on the Piringer equation, and convective mass transfer in air or water based on an empirical flat surface model. The model’s predictive capacity was tested against three experimental case studies: emissions of plasticizers from vinyl flooring and triphenyl phosphate from LCD screens into the air, and leaching of organophosphates from concrete into water. The rates of emission from vinyl flooring were clearly affected by the number of layers comprising the material. Triphenyl phosphate was found in the front surface of all tested flat screens and its rates of emission were related to the nature of the screen and its operating temperature. The model accurately predicted emissions into the air and leaching from concrete into water once modified to include modules that describe dissolution from surfaces and diffusion in water-filled pores. The model was then used to investigate emissions on the national scale. It was found that the rates of emission from vinyl flooring are not changing over time, and that the total mass of emitted material is dependent on annual sales volumes and the expected life span of the vinyl flooring. Moreover, the additive used has a large effect on the emitted mass. Emissions from flat screen displays depend strongly on their operating temperatures: displays with high working temperatures that are active for extended periods of time produce more emissions. The model was also used to study the release of organophosphates from the concrete used to make a bridge, which depended on the flow of water under the bridge, the temperature, the porosity of the concrete, and the additive’s water solubility. Data on annual sales volumes and the total surface area of sold goods are essential when studying emissions on a national scale. National retailers’ organizations are valuable sources of such information. When adequate data are not available, it is necessary to perform uncertainty analyses to determine the impact of uncertainty in the modeling of different stages of the emissions process in different scenarios.

Habilitacijos procedūrai teikiamoje mokslo darbų apžvalgoje „Reformacija ir religinės minties plėtra Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaištystėje“ aptariama monografija Maištininkų katedros. Ankstyvoji reformacija ir lietuvių-italų evangelikų ryšai (2008) bei mokslo straipsniai, nagrinėjantys LDK reformacijos ir protestantų literatūros problemas. Pagrindinis mokslinės analizės chronologinis objektas – ankstyvojo LDK reformacijos etapo kultūros procesai (XVI a. 5-6 dešimtmetis), tačiau analizuojami ir kai kurie vėlesni, XVI a. antros pusės – XVII a. pirmos pusės protestantų literatūros ir kultūros raidos ypatumai. Tai tarpdalykinis tyrimas, integruojantis LDK kultūros, bažnyčių ir konfesijų bei literatūros istorijos tyrimų užduotis. Pagrindinės analizuojamos temos: reformacijos pradžia Lietuvoje ir Lietuvos evangeliškosios minties pradininko Abraomo Kulviečio intelektualinė biografija; du ankstyvieji LDK evangelikų išpažinimai (Kulviečio Confessio fidei, 1543) bei Mikalojaus Radvilos Juodojo atsakymas popiežiaus nuncijui Aloisijui Lippomanui (Duae epistolae, 1556); lietuvių ir italų evangelikų ryšiai bei Italijos protestantizmo vaidmuo ankstyvojoje LDK reformacijoje; Italijos disidentų Bernardino Ochino ir Piero Paolo Vergerijaus ryšiai su Lietuva; Lietuvos evangelikų konfesinio identiteto raida ir santykiai su Vakarų liuteronų ir kalvinistų ortodoksija; LDK evangelikų oficialiosios bažnytinės literatūros (katekizmų, giesmynų) šaltiniai ir raidos bruožai; trinitoristinės polemikos... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The review of the scholarly publications by Dainora Pociūtė „Reformation and the Development of the Confessional Thought in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania“, which has been submitted for the habilitation procedure, discusses the monograph of the said author titled Rebellious Cathedrals. Early Reformation and the contacts between Lithuanian and Italian Evangelicals (2008) as well as her various scholarly papers on the topic of Reformation and Protestant literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). The main subject of her study deals with the cultural processes of the early Reformation of GDL (the first two decades of the Reformation); however some aspects of the later development of Protestant literature and culture at the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century have also been taken into consideration. This interdisciplinary research integrates the issues and concerns of the history of culture, churches, confessions and literature of GDL. The main issues of the research are: the beginning of the Reformation in Lithuania and the reconstruction of the intellectual biography of Abraomas Kulvietis (Abraham Culvensis Gynvilionis), the pioneer of Lithuanian Evangelical thought; the two early Lithuanian confessions of Evangelical faith: Confessio fidei by Culvensis (1543) and Radziwiłł the Black’s answer to the Papal Nuncio Aloisio Lippomano (Duae epistolae, 1556); the links between Lithuanian and Italian Evangelicals and the role of the Italians in... Developing a mentorship tool to improve work performance.

Mashilo, Keitokile Hope. January 2002 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to find out if there is a mentorship tool available to guide mentorship after merger; determine effective mentoring techniques for improving work performance; and develop an appropriate mentorship model for improving work performance within tertiary institution . The main challenge is that the National Department of Education started a process of merging institutions of Higher Education. A number of tools that will help to support these mergers are lacking. The case study used was based on an in-depth analysis of events and programmes culminating from the merger of the two institutions. The Durban Institute of Technology in KwaZulu-Natal was identified and selected because it is the first institution to result in a merger. The documents selected provide the greatest amount of data and the researcher knows which documents deserve more attention than others. The following data sources were selected: Technikon Natal and M L Sultan Technikon merger documentation of 26 March 2002; Department of Education National Plan for Higher Education of 2001 and Andersen's Climate Survey Report on the Durban Institute of Technology of 2002. The theory behind this mentoring tool is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow's view of human needs in the work place is described as self-actualization . This theory of human needs guided the development of the mentorship tool. This is because employees who are mentored will achieve job performance expected of them. Although a well implemented mentoring programme can help with retention of staff, an institution needs to be aware that it may foster an individual's growth faster. Mentoring affects self-confidence and sense of marketability among employees and may thus cause an increase in market vulnerability. / Thesis (M.B.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2002.
