A Window to Jim's Humanity: The Dialectic Between Huck and Jim in Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry FinnAnderson, Erich R. 16 January 2009 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This thesis examines Mark Twain’s use of the dialectic between the characters Huck and Jim to illuminate Jim’s humanity in the classic novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Over the course of their adventure, Huck learns that Jim is a human being and not property. This realization leads Huck to choose to assist Jim in his escape from captivity, and risk eternal damnation according to his religious beliefs. Huck’s decision is driven by the friendship that develops between him and his fellow fugitive on their adventure. Jim’s kindness and stewardship also provide a stark contrast to the treachery of the characters on the banks of the river. Twain thus crafts a message that slavery and race discrimination are wrong without taking the tone of an abolitionist, combining an amusing children’s story with a profound social message. Although definitive proof of his intention to do so has never been found, human friendship is the sliver of common ground Twain used to reach across the profound racial gap in the United States in the late 19th century. The analysis takes place in four parts: (1) a comparison of AHF to other nineteenth century works that featured slavery to establish it as unique among those works; (2) an analysis of the aforementioned dialectic from a modern text of the novel featuring previous deleted parts from the early manuscript; (3) a review of the critical response to the novel which reveals that if Twain was trying to send a message of racial equality, he was not doing so overtly; and (4) a conclusion in which I posit that Twain found a creative solution to a social problem and cite critical discourse that notes Twain’s course of action. This yielded a work that was both more widely read and timeless than a work that confronted slavery directly. Chapters one, three and four utilize critical dialogue and history from print and digital sources.

In literary trauma theory, victimized victimizers represent an ambiguous area. In my thesis, I show how Perry Smith, a historical figure in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood, and Josef Kavalier, a fictional character in Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, represent these ambiguities. Both men become murderers acting out violence that was inflicted upon them as children. However, only Kavalier seems to work through the trauma.

Orality, Literacy, and Heroism in Huckleberry FinnBarrow, William David, 1955- 08 1900 (has links)
This work re-assesses the heroic character of Huckleberry Finn in light of the inherent problems of discourse. Walter Ong's insights into the differences between oral and literate consciousnesses, and Stanley Fish's concept of "interpretive communities" are applied to Huck's interactions with the other characters, revealing the underlying dynamic of his character, the need for a viable discourse community. Further established, by enlisting the ideas of Ernest Becker, is that this need for community finds its source in the most fundamental human problem, the consciousness of death. The study concludes that the problematic ending of Twain's novel is consistent with the theme of community and is neither the artistic failure, nor the cynical pronouncement on the human race that so many critics have seen it to be.

A modalidade oral regional da língua inglesa é representada na fala dos personagens do romance The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Aventuras de Tom Sawyer). Nesta dissertação, é feita uma análise comparativa entre alguns trechos da obra original de Mark Twain, publicada em 1876, e da tradução feita por Monteiro Lobato, em 1934. A partir dos conceitos de regionalidade apresentados por Arendt (2012) e Stüben (2013), o objetivo desta pesquisa é analisar as especificidades culturais da obra original e verificar de que forma o tradutor, Lobato, as transpõe para o texto da língua-meta, o português brasileiro. Além disso, a partir da análise dos trechos selecionados, são identificadas as técnicas tradutórias utilizadas por Monteiro Lobato, com base nas propostas de Vinay e Dalbernet (1971), Barbosa (1990) e Hurtado Albir (2001). Duas línguas nunca serão suficientemente iguais para serem consideradas representativas de uma mesma realidade cultural, sendo possível analisar se há perdas e ganhos na tradução, como corrobora Bassnett (2005). Alice’s failure to grasp sense in Wonderland and her constant suspicion of things and inhabitants make her travel an uncanny one, for events in Wonderland always disturb but uncannily refer to those of the above world. This thesis attempts to explore the secrets of Alice’s travel lurking in the dream scenario, identifying and explicating her role as a traveler in the miraculous Wonderland from three aspects of travel: traveling spatiotemporality, the nature of travel and the traveler herself. / Chapter One is a condense, general introduction to the whole thesis. Chapter Two discusses the psychoanalytical theory of the unconscious, the theory of fantasy in literature, and the motif of travel in fantasy literature. The inseparable relationship between the unconscious and the reality will be introduced first. It is this relationship that makes Alice’s travel in her dreamland being effective and possible in the real world. Employing the Deleuzian theory, this thesis takes Gilles Deleuze’s ideas on “nomadology” and “becoming” as the main theoretical framework. Being accompanied with Syed Manzurul Islam’s ideas on the ethics of travel, which is derived from the Deleuzian theory, this thesis takes a step further to develop a new perspective on travel account. / Chapter Three deals with the spatiotemporality of Wonderland, analyzing its spatiotemporal nature and the way it influences Alice’s role as a traveler. Islam divides traveler into two categories—a nomadic traveler and a sedentary traveler. A nomadic traveler is one who eludes the present, undergoing the process of becoming-other on the smooth space, whereas a sedentary traveler is one who travels on pre-set routes of the rigid space within limited temporality. Therefore, the spatiotemporality of a travel will affect the kind of a traveler Alice would be. The multiple spatiotemporality of Wonderland provides Alice with a good foundation to become a nomadic traveler. / Chapter Four concentrates on Alice’s travel and her role as a traveler, analyzing her encounter with the other, her traveling speed and movement, and her becoming in the fantastic underground world. Alice is problematic in becoming-other, since she keeps being captive in the representation of norms received from the Victorian overground which makes encounter with the other and deterritorialization with intensity of speed impossible. Although the spatiotemporality of Wonderland pushes Alice forward to the process of a nomadic travel, she lacks a final move to shake off the confinement of the past memories and preconceptions. Alice is on the brink of becoming-other as a nomadic traveler. / Alice’s travel is neither a sedentary nor a nomadic one; she has a travel of her own, always vacillating between a sedentary traveler and a nomadic traveler. As a sedentary traveler, she is not becoming-other as a nomadic traveler, but on the process of becoming-(nomadic) traveler.

Ce travail explore la dualité telle qu’elle se présente dans deux ouvrages d’André Gide, Les Caves du Vatican et Les Faux-Monnayeurs. Thème majeur de la littérature, le double ne cesse d’illustrer les différentes tensions qui se créent et se combattent chez une seule et même personne. Souvent représenté physiquement dans la littérature du XIXe siècle à la suite de la figure du Doppelgänger, le double chez Gide se complexifie : plus subtil, il se manifeste de manière psychologique. La dualité se présente de deux manières dans les écrits d’André Gide : chez les personnages et à travers la narration. Par l’étude des contradictions et des inconséquences des personnages, de la représentation de la dualité chez différents personnages, de leur dédoublement et de leurs doubles discours, il sera possible de constater à quel point les personnages structurent la dualité. L’analyse de l’identité des narrateurs, de leurs interventions et des figures de rhétorique qu’ils emploient permettra également de comprendre que plus ils se révèlent, plus ils se complexifient. / This work explores duality as it is portrayed in two books by André Gide, Les Caves du Vatican (translated as Lafcadio’s Adventures and The Vatican Cellars) and Les Faux-Monnayeurs (The Counterfeiters). The concept of the double is a major literary theme which sheds light on the various tensions lashing against each other within individuals. Often depicted in physical form in 19th century literature following the use of the Doppelgänger figure, the double found in Gide’s writings is more complex: subtler, it remains psychological but is not visible. There are two major ways in which duality appears in Gide’s books: through the characters, and through the narrative. Studying the characters’ contradictions and inconsistencies, the representation of duality in various characters, their ability to become another character’s double, and their double discourses enables us to establish the extent to which the characters structure duality. An analysis of the narrators’ identities, of their interventions, and of the rhetorical figures they use also shows that the more they reveal themselves, the more complex they become.

Myth, Modernism and Mentorship: Examining François Fénelon’s Influence on James Joyce’s UlyssesUnknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this thesis will be to examine closely James Joyce’s Ulysses with respect to François Fénelon’s The Adventures of Telemachus. Joyce considered The Adventures of Telemachus to be a source of inspiration for Ulysses, but little scholarship considers this. Joyce’s fixation on the role of teachers and mentor figures in Stephen’s growth and development, serving alternately as cautionary figures, models or adversaries, owes much to Fénelon’s framework for the growth of Telemachus. Close reading of both Joyce’s and Fénelon’s work will illuminate the significance of education and mentorship in Joyce’s construction of Stephen Dedalus. Leopold Bloom and Stephen’s relationship in Joyce’s Ulysses closely mirrors that of Mentor and Telemachus as seen in Fénelon’s The Adventures of Telemachus. Kommer snart i 3D : En jämförelse mellan 1950-talets och samtidens 3D-trailrarEriksson, Lars January 2012 (has links)
Denna uppsats handlar om filmtrailrar, och mer specifikt trailrar som marknadsför 3D-filmer. Syftet är att lyfta fram ett till stora delar outforskat ämne och undersöka likheter och skillnader i konventioner mellan trailrar från 50-talet och moderna trailrar. Frågorna jag ämnar svara är: Hur marknadsför moderna, samtida trailrar 3D-teknologin? Finns det gemensamma konventioner och stilistiska grepp som är genomgående för dessa trailrar? Vad finns det för likheter respektive skillnader i konevntioner och grepp? Vad har förändrats i marknadsföringen av 3D-teknologin sedan 1950-talet? Forskningsfältet trailrar är till stora delar outforskat, men mitt arbete lyfter fram några studier som gjorts. Kernan har skrivit en bok om trailrar i allmänhetoch utformat tankar och resonemang om vad en trailer är. Hon utgår ifrån ett retoriskt synsätt och menar att det går att utläsa hur studior via trailrar "talar" till publiken. Street har skrivit en artikel som utgår ifrån Esther Harris, som skapade trailrar i England, och hennes arbete. Street redogör för Harris trailrar i synnerhet och filmtrailrar i allmänhet och knyter an till det Kernan redogör för i sin bok. Johnston har skrivit om hur trailrar marknadsför teknologi, däribland en artikel om just trailrar för 3D-filmer. Det är denna artikel, med hans resonemang och resultat, som ligger till grund som teoretisk ram för detta arbete. Johnston menar att en rad konventioner och grepp utvecklades under 1950-talet för att lyfta fram 3D-formatet som den stora stjärnan som skulle locka tillbaka publiken till biograferna. Han menar att scener och sekvenser med action, specialeffekter och spektakel lyftes fram så att publiken skulle få se prov på vad formatet kunde göra. Speciellt klipp med utstickande föremål eller armar, vapen eller liknande, framhävdes för att understryka den tredje dimensionen. Man använde även textskyltar och berättarröster som berättade och informerade om 3D-teknologin., samt så kallade "Masters of Ceremonies"; specialskapade segment i trailern där, oftast, en skådespelare (som sig själv eller i sin roll) vände sig direkt till publiken och berättade om 3D-formatet. I min analys utgår jag ifrån Johnstons teorier och analysrerar sedan trailrarna till Avatar, The Final Destination, Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Three Musketeers, The Adventures of Tintin, Men In Black 3 samt The Smurfs. Jag finner att trailrarna gör väldigt lite eller inget alls för att informera om 3D-formatet, men att konventioner i val av klipp och scener sig lika sedan 1950-talet. Med andra ord, att scener med action, specialeffekter, spektakel, och saker och föremål och annat som sticker ut ur skärmen lyfts fram. Undantaget är trailern till The Smurfs som till stor del är lik trailerkonventionerna från 50-talet, i det att den vänder sig direkt till publiken i specialgjort material i sitt tilltal och använder sig av "the Master of Ceremonies". Jag kommer fram till att mycket i de moderna trailrarna är sig likt och att flera konventioner och grepp lever kvar sedan 50-talet. De största skillnaderna ligger i det direkta tilltalet till publiken och att de moderna trailrarna tycks tona ner budskapet om 3D-formatet.
