Certain aspects of the Goddess in the Ancient Near East, 10,000-330 BCEAdair, Jennette 29 February 2008 (has links)
In the historical tapestry of the development of the Goddess, from 10,000 - 330 BCE one
golden thread shines through. Despite the vicissitudes of differing status, she remained
essentially the same, namely divine. She was continuously sought in the many mysteries,
mystic ideologies and through the manifestations that she inspired. In all the countries of
the Ancient Near East, the mother goddess was the life giving creatrix and regenerator of
the world and the essence of the generating force that seeds new life. While her name
may have altered in the various areas, along with that of her consort/lover/child, the
myths and rituals which formed a major force in forming the ancient cultures would
become manifest in a consciousness and a spiritual awareness. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / M.A. (Language and Culture)

This study focuses on the "Skull Building" of Çayönü (Southeast Anatolian PrepotteryNeolithic), which is one of the oldest buildings for burial use in the MiddleEast. Human remains from different bone deposits (110,460 fragments) of the "SkullBuilding" have been studied through an archaeo-anthropological and taphonomicapproach which had never been applied to a prehistoric site in Anatolia. We havedeveloped a software for counting, estimated the minimum number of individualsburied in each of the two phases of use (NMI = 97 for the Oval Building, NMI = 231for the Rectangular Building) and highlighted a change in practices between the ovalbuilding (the oldest) and the rectangular building (most recent). The results obtainedallow proposing a new interpretation for the functions of this building, insofar as theanalysis showed that different deposits of the second phase of use (RectangularBuilding) were interrelated.

Premières productions de céramiques turques en Anatolie occidentale : Contextualisation et études techniques / The First Production of Turkish Ceramics in Western Anatolia : Contextualisation and Technical StudiesBurlot, Jacques 11 September 2017 (has links)
Since the 1990s, archaeometric studies have attested to the production of new types of ceramic in Western Anatolia, linked to the arrival of Turkish populations in the region from the end of the 13th century. Among these new types are ceramics whose shapes and decoration are very commonly found in the Islamic world, and which show the introduction of new techniques of fabrication.Taking a sample of 87 sherds discovered at five Turkish sites and three sites in the Crimea, this study, combining an archaeological approach with physicochemical analyses, enabled us to propose a chronological framework for these initial Turkish productions and to determine the techniques of fabrication of their coatings – slips and glazes – used for the decoration. The definition of these techniques relies in the main on elementary and structural analyses by SEM-EDS and by Raman spectroscopy, the results of which permit us to confirm the use of new recipes and new materials. While the decoration of Byzantine ceramics was essentially constituted of a high-lead transparent glaze, coloured by a reduced range of metallic oxides resting on a clay slip, the decoration of the initial Turkish ceramics, from the Beylik period, produced in the region, were much more varied. Their glazes attest to a greater diversity in the nature of the fluxes and opacifiers, as well as in the colorants used. Considered to be one of the first types of Ottoman ceramics, the Miletus Ware shows the most elaborate decoration. The slip is no longer clay-based but synthetic, prefiguring in this way the later production using synthetic paste of the Iznik Fritwares upon which the fame of 16th century Ottoman ceramics was based. Our study thus enabled us to characterise and contextualise the technical evolution which marked the transition from Byzantine to Ottoman ceramics in Western Anatolia.

Anatolia is part of a vast orogenic domain that extends from the Alps to the Himalayas. Numerous ophiolitic sutures defined the remnants of several oceanic domains (Northern and southern Neotethys), between continental fragments formed during Mesozoic time. Oceanic closure during Late Cretaceous is recorded by the establishment of syn-orogenic tertiary basins, including the Sivas Basin bounded to the north by the Kırşehir block and to the south by the Taurides. An extended study based on field and completed by geochemistry, biostratigraphy and thermochronology analyzes and more than 700 km unpublished seismic data, was conducted to resolve (i) the regional geodynamic context and (ii) the tectono-sedimentary architecture of this basin. The ophiolites located along the southern edge of the Sivas Basin are made of serpentinized peridotites. The upper part of the ophiolite present breccias and ophicalcites commonly described as associated to mantle exhumation environment, while the geochemical analysis of the magmatic bodies reveals a supra-subduction environment dated at circa 90 Ma (U-Pb on zircon). These observations are in agreement with an embryonic ocean domain located between the Kırşehir and the Taurides, the closure which was initiated along fossil detachment faults. The obduction of the peridotite nappe and its frontal mélange on the northern margin of the Taurides between the Turonian and the Maastrichtian allows forming the “ophiolitic basement” of the east-anatolian basins.A detailed map and cross-section analysis, supported by 2D seismic lines and low-temperature thermochronology [AFTA and (U-Th) / on apatite], resulted in a kinematic evolution model and the realization of balanced cross-sections. The propagation of the deformation towards the north, initiated in the Lower Eocene, results in the progressive isolation of the basin and a strong accumulation of evaporites during the Upper Eocene. The Oligo-Miocene depocenters were controlled by halokinesis, forming two generations of mini-basins, separated by a salt canopy. The geometries in the halokinetic domain and the lateral variations in the basin show the control exerted by (i) the pre-evaporite basin outcropping along the southern half of the basin and (ii) the thickness of the initial salt level.Integration at the regional scale within the Taurides highlights the propagation of crustal shortening related to the Southern Neotethys closure, which formed linear tectonic basement exhumation. The collision recorded in the Upper Oligocene - Miocene during the indentation of the Arabic plate along the Taurides is contemporaneous to the deformation the Sivas Basin.

Reigns of Hattušili III, Puduhepa and their son, Tudhaliya IV, ca 1267-1228 BCEVan der Ryst, Anna Francina Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigate the impact of the extended religious and political elements in the ancient Near East of the Late Bronze period that influenced the reigns of Hattušili III, his consort, Queen Puduhepa, circa 1267 to 1237 BCE and their son Tudhaliya IV circa 1237 to 1228 BCE. As rulers of the Hittites, they were not the greatest and most influential royals, like the great Suppiluliuma I circa 1322 to 1344 BCE, but their ability to adopt an eclectic approach similar to that of their great predecessors regarding religion, politics, international diplomacy and signing treaties made this royal triad a force to be reckoned with in the ancient Near East. Therefore, central to this investigation will be the impact of Hattušili III’s usurpation of the throne and Puduhepa’s role in the Hurrianisation of the state cult and pantheon. Also included is a brief investigation into the continuation of the reorganisation and restructuring of the Hittite state cult and local cult inventories by Tudhaliya IV and his mother Puduhepa after the death of Hattušilli III. By researching this royal triad, their deities, their Hurro-Hittite culture and the textual evidence of their rule, it becomes possible to assemble some of the elements that impacted on their rule. I have used available transliterated translated texts and pictures to support and illustrate the investigation of this complex final period in the history of the Hittite Empire. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / MA (Ancient Near Eastern Studies)

Physical and metaphysical zones of transition : comparative themes in Hittite and Greek Karst landscapes in the Late Bronze and Early Iron agesHay, Anne Persida 01 1900 (has links)
English, Afrikaans and Zulu summaries / While there is increasing interest in the effect of landscape on ancient imagination, less
attention has been paid to the impact of restless karst hydrology on ancient beliefs. By
identifying shared themes, this study compares and contrasts the way Hittites and
Aegean people in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages reshaped peripheral karst
landscapes into physical and imagined transitional zones.
Karst geology underpins much of the Aegean and Anatolian landscape, allowing
subterranean zones to be visible and accessible above ground via caves, springs, sinking
streams, sinkholes and other unusual natural formations. In both cultures, certain
dynamic landscapes were considered to be sacred porous points where deities, daemons,
heroes and mortals could transit between cosmic realms. Evidence suggests that Hittites
and Aegean people interpreted dramatic karst landscapes as liminal thresholds and
spaces situated between the world of humans and the world of deities.
Part One investigates physical zones of transition via the karst ecosystems of rural
sanctuaries. Part Two considers the creative interpretation in myth and iconography of
karst phenomena into metaphysical zones of transition. The examples reveal the way in
which Hittites and Aegean people built their concept of the sacred on the extraordinary
characteristics of karst geology. Numinous karst landscapes provided validity and a
familiar reference point for the creation of imagined worlds where mortal and divine
could connect.
In beide
bogenoemde kulture is sekere landskapstonele beskou as heilige en poreuse punte waar
Ngenkathi intshisekelo ekhulayo yethonya lokwakheka komhlaba emcabangweni
