Nasr, Marwan 08 1900 (has links)
By the means of Paul Ricœur’s theory on narrative identity, the following thesis will examine the singular conceptions of identity in the works Cosmos and Les envoutés (W. Gombrowicz) as well as To the Lighthouse and The Waves by V. Woolf. On one hand, we will analyze the obsessive serialization behavior that Witold manifests in Cosmos followed by a case of complete loss of one’s self towards otherness. Furthermore, we will scrutinize the family turmoil between James Ramsay (To the Lighthouse) and his family members. Additionally, we will also inspect the adherence and anchoring of three protagonists towards the development of a unique perception of their environment (The Waves). Ultimately, the protagonists recognize that one’s self is intrically linked to individual stories and events that craft their own sense of being.

Mini-implantes ortodônticos: avaliação microbiológica e quantificação de endotoxina bacteriana, citocinas pró-inflamatórias e marcadores da osteoclastogênese / Orthodontic mini-implants: microbiological evaluation and quantification of bacterial endotoxin, proinflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenesis markers

Marcela Cristina Damião Andrucioli 20 September 2013 (has links)
Orthodontic mini-implants have been widely used in clinical practice as anchorage devices. However, their loss may occur during the treatment. Several aspects have been investigated to identify the causes of failure, but they are not yet completely elucidated. Therefore, using two groups of miniimplants - stable and unstable/loose - the objectives of this in vivo study were: 1) to evaluate the microbial contamination, using DNA probes for 40 bacterial species by the checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization biomolecular technique; 2) to quantify the bacterial endotoxin present in both groups of mini-implants by the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate assay; and 3) to quantify the proinflammatory cytokines IL-1α, IL-6, IL-17 and TNF-α and the osteoclastogenesis marker proteins (RANK, RANKL and OPG) by real-time polymerase chain reaction technique. Sixteen patients of both sexes (11 to 49 years old) under orthodontic treatment with corrective appliance and mini-implants were selected, obtaining 19 stable mini-implants and 10 unstable/loose mini-implants. The mean time of permanence in the mouth was 23.8 months for stable mini-implants and 6.7 months for unstable/loose mini-implants. The mini-implants (1.6 mm diameter x 7.0 or 9.0 mm long; Neodent) were placed in the maxilla and/or mandible. All mini-implants were placed and removed by the same surgeon. At the moment of removal, the mini-implants and periimplant gingival tissue samples were collected. The mini-implants were processed for detection of microorganisms and quantification of bacterial endotoxin, while the gingival tissue samples were processed for quantification of proinflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenesis protein markers. The results were analyzed statistically by the nonparametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test, considering the conglomerates, using SAS software. A significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. All (100%) 40 microbial species were observed in both groups of mini-implants, with different percentages of occurrence. No differences could be observed between the groups with respect to the microbial complexes (blue, purple, yellow, green, orange, red and other species). There was no significant difference either in the quantification of endotoxin and cytokines and osteoclastogenesis markers (p>0.05), except for IL- 6 (p<0.05). Based on the obtained results, it may be concluded that neither the microbial contamination and amount of endotoxin in mini-implants, nor the expression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-1α, IL-17 and TNF-α and osteoclastogenesis markers RANK, RANKL and OPG in the periimplant gingival tissue acted as factors responsible for the loss of stability of the mini-implants, and that the higher expression of the IL-6 proinflammatory cytokine may be directly associated with the loss of stability of the mini-implants, suggesting additional studies.

Avaliação do tratamento ortopédico com mini-implantes como ancoragem esquelética em pacientes Classe III com retrusão do terço médio da face / Evaluation of orthopedic treatment using mini-implants as anchorage in Class III patients with retrusion of the middle third of the face

Ricardo Alves de Souza 27 April 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that patients with Class III skeletal malocclusion due to deficiency of the middle third of the face could be treated orthopedically with the use of conventional orthodontic mini-implants and support of intermaxillary elastics during protraction of the maxilla. In the mini-implants group (MI) with n = 12, two conventional mini-implants were inserted in the region close to the mesial area of the permanent first molar roots and another two, in the distal area of the mandibular canine roots. The children were instructed to use ¼\" medium intermaxillary elastics, throughout almost 24 hours per day and force of 200g. In the facial mask group (MF) with n = 13, the rapid maxillary expansion protocol and facial mask were performed. All participants were in the growth phase, and were between 7 and 12 years of age. Statistical analyzes were performed using the Student\'s t-test and the Mann-Whitney test for comparison of independent samples, Wilcoxon for paired samples, and a significance level of 5% was used for the initial and final cephalometric data. It was possible to confirm that both groups presented improvement in the facial profile with increase of the facial convexity and correction of the negative overjet in the majority of the children. Advancement of the maxilla was shown by means of cephalometric superimpositions, with significant differences between T0 and T1 in the following measurements: SNA, ANB, Wits, Co-A, Co-Gn, NAP, A-Npog, overjet and molar relationship, in addition to Sn-line H, and 1-NB for Group MI. There was no statistically significant intergroup difference in the cephalometric measurements evaluated, but the time of treatment was significant, as it was faster for Group MI. As a general conclusion, the null hypothesis was acepted, because it was possible to affirm that conventional mini-implants associated with intermaxillary elastics could be an option for the treatment of Class III patients with maxillary retrusion, particularly in cases of lack of cooperation with the use of the face mask. In addition, the degree of surgical intervention was reduced, which is characteristic of the protocol for the insertion of mini-implants.

Avaliação da presença de periodontopatógenos na superfície de miniparafusos ortodônticos por meio microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e da técnica de reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) / Evaluation of periodontopathogen presence on orthodontic mini-screw surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Mônica Nacao 27 March 2009 (has links)
Self-tapping titanium alloy orthodontic mini-screws have been used as bony anchorage during orthodontic tooth movement. Studies have shown a higher failure rate of mini-screw than dental implants, and the presence of periodontopathogens has been mentioned in the literature as a possible reason for peri-implantitis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of periodontopathogens on the mini-screw surface by SEM and to identify the bacteria, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Prevotella intermedia (Pi), by DNA amplification using PCR. Mini-screws of the experimental and control groups were collected from both male and female patients, with good oral health and absence of periodontal disease, non-smoker, and non-diabetic. The results, when analyzed by SEM, showed the adhesion of bacilli and inflammatory cells to the surface of the mini-screws in the experimental group and the adhesion of blood clots and fibril array in the control group. DNA amplification revealed Pi in all cases of both groups analyzed. Aa presence was observed in 31.25% of the control group against 13.3% in the experimental group and Pg presence in 37.4% of the control group against 33.33% in the experimental group. Fishers exact test did not show significant association between both presence and absence of Aa (P = 0.39) and Pg (P = 0.70) and the analyzed groups. Furthermore, odds ratio (OR) revealed no significant association of Aa (OR = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.05-2.10) and Pg (OR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.13- 2.79) with peri-implantitis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, by finite element method (FEM), the influence of load direction on stress distribution in bone tissue around orthodontic miniscrew. By means of the graphic interface of Abaqus/CAE finite element program, tridimensional models were made, corresponding to a miniscrew, section of maxillary bone, premolar and molar teeth taken from computerized tomograph cuts in Dicom format. All parts were considered solid and homogeneous sections with isotropic and linear-elastic properties. A 2N force was applied on the miniscrew, decomposed in two components at 45º on the plane normal to its longitudinal axis. For numerical simulation, the miniscrew was placed in nine different mesio-distal directions. A placement orthogonal to the vestibular surface (angulation of 0º), others of -10º, -20º, -30º and -40º in favor of the force applied and 10º, 20º, 30º and 40º contrary to the force applied. By means of von Mises criteria and analysis of main stressed it was observed that there was a variation in stresses as a result of direction, and the most attenuating situation for the cortical bone was that of 0º, whereas at -20º and 20º higher stress concentrations occurred. It was concluded that there was influence of the mesio-distal direction of the miniscrew in relation to load, of stress distribution in bone tissue.

Elaboration et caractérisation de films d’hydrogel et de composites hydrogel-céramique pour les applications biomédicales / Design and characterization of hydrogel films and hydrogel-ceramic composites for biomedical applications

Moreau, David 21 January 2016 (has links)
The replacement of soft osteoarticular tissues by synthetic hydrogel implants is often limited by a weak anchorage to bone tissues. One approach to strengthen the bone-implant interface consists in functionalizing the surface of the implant by a coating of bioceramics. In this thesis, we investigate two approaches to coat hydrogels of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with ceramic particles of hydroxyapatite (HA). In a first “soft” process, based on dip-coating, hydrogel substrates were coated with hydroxyapatite particles embedded in a non-degradable PVA hydrogel matrix. In this process, the control of the soaking solution composition allows to finely tune the thickness, the cohesion and the adhesion of the coating, as well as the HA exposure at the coating surface. The biocompatibility with surgical handling and the osteointegration of these systems were assessed by an in vivo study in a rabbit model of bone tunnel healing. This first approach led to the discovery of a new approach to grow physical hydrogel films by a self-sustained process, consisting in using the solvent depletion created at the surface of a swelling polymer substrate immersed in a PVA solution to induce the gelation of hydrogel films without external action. In this process, the growth of these hydrogel films depends on the solution concentration, the soaking time and the swelling kinetics of the substrate. We verified the gentle character of this process by encapsulating fibroblasts, which remain viable for 48h. In a second more “energetic” process, dense coatings of submicronic HA particles were produced on PVA hydrogel by cold spray. Spraying parameters (temperature, pressure and stand-off distance) were varied systematically to determine efficient spraying condition. Based on microscopic observations, a picture explaining the formation of the coating is proposed. Both processes and their combination open new routes for the design of ceramic-hydrogel systems having controlled microstructural, mechanical and biological properties.

Externally unbonded post-tensioned CFRP tendons : a system solution

Bennitz, Anders January 2011 (has links)
The introduction of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) to the civil engineering market in the late 1980s resulted in the emergence of a range of new tools for rehabilitating and strengthening concrete structures. Strengthening using FRPs is typically accomplished using non-prestressed externally bonded FRPs. The technical and economic benefits of such strengthening could be further increased by prestressing the FRPs, especially when dealing with concrete structures. Prestressing concrete structures suppresses the appearance and growth of cracks in the serviceability limit state. This in turn increases the structure’s stiffness and resistance to degradation. Prestressing also increases the structure’s yield load but does not change its failure load relative to that of an analogous non-prestressed structure, provided that all other parameters are kept constant. In 2004, a pilot study was carried out at the Luleå University of Technology (LTU) to investigate the scope for using unbonded Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening systems, particularly those involving prestressing. In the early stages of this project, a number of difficulties were encountered in anchoring the CFRP rods to concrete structures: the conical wedge anchorages that were used tended to either cause premature failure of the rods or allowed the rod to slip out of the anchorage. It was therefore decided to study the mechanisms at work within these anchorages in more detail. The goal of the project was to develop a small, practical, reliable, and userfriendly anchorage for use in unbonded external CFRP strengthening systems. On the basis of a thorough literature review, which is described in Paper 1, it was concluded that despite the difficulties encountered, the conical wedge anchorages used with steel reinforcing rods were the most promising starting point for the design of a new anchorage for use with CFRPs. Importantly, the conical wedge anchorage can be made small in size and easy to mount while retaining a high degree of versatility; this is not true of bonded, sleeve, and clamping anchorages. Analytical and numerical models were used to investigate the distribution of radial stress within these highly pressurized anchorages. Paper 2 describes an evaluation of the capability of three types of models - an analytical axisymmetric model based on the thick-walled-cylinder-theory and two Finite Element (FE) models, one axisymmetric and one three-dimensional - to predict the behaviour of a conical wedge anchorage. It was concluded that the axisymmetric models were incapable of modelling the stress distribution within the anchorage with sufficient accuracy, and so 3D FE models were used exclusively in subsequent studies. Paper 3 describes the development of a new anchorage for CFRP rods. The design process involved conducting pull-out studies on a series of prototypes, in conjunction with computational studies using a basic FE model, to identify and understand the prototypes’ failure modes. Between the computational data and experimental results, a good understanding of the factors affecting the interaction between the CFRP rod and the anchorage was obtained. The new anchorage design employs a one-piece wedge which effectively incorporates the three wedges and the inner sleeve from more conventional wedge anchorages into a single unit. This increases the reliability and user-friendliness of the anchorage because it eliminates the need to check the alignment of individual wedges. The new design has been patented; the published Swedish patent is included in the thesis as Paper 6. The newly-developed anchorage was then incorporated into a prestressing system and its performance was evaluated using a series of test beams. In parallel with the planning of these tests, a series of pull-out tests was conducted using the new anchorage. The strain measurements obtained in these experiments were compared to predictions made using a new, more advanced FE model, and used to refine the design of the new anchorage. Paper 4 describes this new FE model, the most important parameters affecting anchorage behaviour, and the final anchorage design. Paper 5 focuses on the possibilities provided by the new anchorage. Tests were performed using seven three meter long concrete beams prestressed with external unbonded CFRP tendons. One beam was unstrengthened; the other six were strengthened in different ways, with different prestressing forces, initial tendon depths, and with or without the use of a midspan deviator for the tendons. The results of these tests were compared to those obtained using otherwise identical beams prestressed with steel tendons and to the predictions of an analytical beam model developed for use with steel tendons. These tests showed that the prestressing works as intended and that the behaviour of beams prestressed with external unbonded CFRP tendons is fully comparable to that of beams prestressed with steel tendons. It was also found that the predictions of the analytical model were in good agreement with experimental observations, although there were some differences between the measured and predicted tendon stresses. The development of a functional anchorage represents a fulfilment of the objectives laid out at the start of this project, and represents an important step towards the practical use of prestressed unbonded external CFRP tendons in strengthening concrete structures. However, a number of outstanding questions remain to be addressed. Little is known about the safety of this kind of system, and the benefits of using CFRP tendons should be quantified. Furthermore, there are a number of potential technical issues that must be addressed. These include the risk of creep-rupture in the CFRP, the effects of thermal contraction and expansion on the anchorage, and the scalability of the anchorage as the tendon diameter is increased. Finally, the long-term behaviour of the anchorage and prestressing system should be investigated.

Kábrt, Michal January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the diploma thesis was to make a structural design of steel-load-carrying structure of steel lookout tower, in the grounds of domestic brewery in Humpolec. Lookout tower will be part of newly built centre for customers of the brewery. The layout and shape of the load-carrying structure of steel lookout tower follow the brewery chimney with height of 32.7 m with circular ground plan and outside diameter of 3.5 m in the heel and 2.3 m at the top. The chimney is independent of the construction of the lookout tower. The ground plan and dimensions of the lookout tower were considered taking into account the required spacing of the structure from adjacent buildings and ensuring sufficient dimensions for the required passage between the future lookout tower and the existing building of the boiler room. RFEM was used for calculation internal forces and assessment on individual structural elements, according to the valid Eurocodes.
