Guidelines on choosing between native and cross platform development : A comparative study on the efficiency of native and cross-platform mobile development

Folke, Andrae, Sharma Kothuri, Rahul January 2023 (has links)
The first decision in an application development project is choosing the application development platform. Until recently, native application development was the dominant development platform used. The recent increase in popularity of cross-platform development has made this decision to choose between native and cross platform development platforms even more difficult. There is a problem of a lack of guidelines on choosing between native and cross platform development. This lack of guidelines can lead companies to incur costs since application development is a time and money intensive process. The purpose of the thesis is to provide guidelines on when to choose between native application development and cross platform development. This thesis utilized qualitative methods to perform a comparative analysis between native and cross platform development. This analysis was done by building a weather application using native platform development and Flutter, which is the cross-platform development tool we have chosen. We used five comparative criteria to perform the comparative analyses. The results of the thesis are the set of guidelines that are obtained by performing a comparative analysis between native and cross platform development using five comparative criteria. These results will aid people involved in the application development process in making an informed decision of what development platform to use.

Performance and feature support of Progressive Web Applications : A performance and available feature comparison between Progressive Web Applications, React Native applications and native iOS applications.

Nilsson, Anders January 2022 (has links)
Mobile platform fragmentation is one of the main challenges of mobile development today, forcing developers to develop one application for each targeted platform, which significantly impacts time and cost for application development and maintenance. The fragmentation has given rise to cross-platform application development tools and frameworks, making it possible to develop one single application compatible with several platforms. This thesis focuses on the web-based approach Progressive Web Applications (PWAs), which, in contrast to previous approaches, targets both mobile and desktop devices. We aim to point out the supported features, evaluate their suitability for QR code scanning, and their performance compared to alternative approaches on iOS. We specifically cover a feature set of 33 features and measure response times, CPU and memory utilization, geolocation accuracy, and QR code scanning correctness. We developed three benchmark artifacts for the performance analysis: a PWA, a React Native application, and a native iOS application, and conducted automated run-time experiments using the tools Xcode and XCUITest. The performance evaluation shows that native applications performed best in memory and CPU utilization, whereas React Native achieved the shortest response times. The feature evaluation shows that the majority of the features are supported or partially supported for PWAs, and that the support continues to grow. Still, PWAs lack support for crucial mobile features such as push notifications and background synchronization, making PWAs insufficient for advanced mobile application development on iOS. Nevertheless, this study shows that PWAs are well worth considering for applications with low requirements.

Exploring the use of low-code software development in the automotive industry : thesis conducted at the Scania engine assembly facility / Mjukvaruutveckling med low-code inom fordonsindustrin

Henriksson, Matteus January 2024 (has links)
The growing demand for IT professionals to develop and maintain software is creating huge concerns for organizations looking to keep up and build resilience. The trends show that there is a large shortage compared to the demand. Manufacturing companies are no exception to this, and the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies will most likely increase this need even further. However, developing software solutions often requires specialized knowledge, and organizations are looking far and wide for the competence. If it is present, it is often found in the organization’s centralized IT departments. Low-code development might offer a solution, by lowering the threshold for employees and individuals to develop, deploy and maintained applications with limited technical expertise. Low-code development is method that enables software applications to be built using graphical user interfaces in so called low-code development platforms. The platforms provide templates, drag-and-drop modules and integration with other systems to reduce the complexity of the application development process. These platforms could offer advantages for manufacturing firms, including quicker development that could aid in responding to new requirements. Other benefits include: cost savings and shorter development cycles, allowing for faster releases which can help enterprises stay more competitive and reduce risk. This thesis probes the factors to consider with low-code platforms, such as the role of citizen developers and the balance between accessibility and control in the context of manufacturing industries. It explores how low-code development could enhance efficiency and presents a case study from the engine assembly facility in Scania Södertälje. Best practices for building an organization around low-code developers are discussed. The insights from this study provide an understanding of the complexities and potential of low-code development, laying the groundwork for further exploration and implementation. Combined, the results and insights offer a clear perspective on how low-code development can assist organizations in the digital age.

Requirement Engineering : A comparision between Traditional requirement elicitation techniqes with user story

Hussain, Dostdar, Ismail, Muhammad January 2011 (has links)
Requirements are features or attributes which we discover at the initial stage of building a product. Requirements describe the system functionality that satisfies customer needs. An incomplete and inconsistent requirement of the project leads to exceeding cost or devastating the project. So there should be a process for obtaining sufficient, accurate and refining requirements such a process is known as requirement elicitation. Software requirement elicitation process is regarded as one of the most important parts of software development. During this stage it is decided precisely what should be built. There are many requirements elicitation techniques however selecting the appropriate technique according to the nature of the project is important for the successful development of the project. Traditional software development and agile approaches to requirements elicitation are suitable in their own context. With agile approaches a high-level, low formal form of requirement specification is produced and the team is fully prepared to respond unavoidable changes in these requirements. On the other hand in traditional approach project could be done more satisfactory with a plan driven well documented specification. Agile processes introduced their most broadly applicable technique with user stories to express the requirements of the project. A user story is a simple and short written description of desired functionality from the perspective of user or owner. User stories play an effective role on all time constrained projects and a good way to introducing a bit of agility to the projects. Personas can be used to fill the gap of user stories.

Καρούσος, Νίκος 24 January 2012 (has links)
Although hypertext is considered as a widely accepted mean for information structuring, the provision of hypertext-related services has not yet reached a satisfactory level. Both the design principles of hypertext systems and the lack of developer support for the exploitation of hypermedia services lead to a low level of provision of the hypertext functionality from the world. This problem has highlighted the need for re-approaching the design principles of HSs under a different perspective in which the creation and the provision of a hypermedia service are crucial issues. This thesis focuses on the development of a framework aiming at both the provision of hypermedia service and the web application development support using hypermedia functionality. The adoption of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) in the design of Hypermedia Systems (OHS) constitutes the main approach against the particular issue. The SOA based implementation of HSs together with the the provision of hypermedia services to the Internet through universal standards try to aid the exploitation of the hypermedia functionality from an open set of both users and systems. The OHSs together with the Component Based – OHSs (CB-OHSs) like Callimachus were the leading paradigm in this approach in which the web-service technique was both studied and adopted in order to provide to the Internet hypermedia services based on different hypermedia fields (taxonomic, spatial, navigational etc) provided by existing systems. The case study of this approach regards the Babylon system. It is a hypertext system designed to provide taxonomic services in the context of the entire Callimachus system as a single component. The Babylon system was later transformed to a taxonomic internet based service using the Web Service standards. Furthermore, a collaboration and decision making support tool based on spatial and argumentation support technologies was also implemented. The development was entirely based on SOA thus the provided services are available both from users or applications of the world wide web and 3rd party (external) applications by using the Web Services protocols. Finally, a study which concerns capabilities of discovering and searching of the hypermedia services has also taken place. The evaluation of the proposed approach extracted many positive conclusions regarding the utilization of SOA in the area of hypermedia systems.

Edström, Christoffer, Jalsing, Jacob January 2017 (has links)
The mobile industry is constantly changing, which has led to a fragmented market that smallbusinesses have difficulties to successfully establish in. Small businesses have had problemswith developing qualitative applications for different mobile devices. The main reason is theresource intensive process to develop native applications for multiple platforms andmaintaining the different codebases. Thus, smaller companies have usually chosen to developweb applications to deliver services to a more widespread target audience. Hybrid frameworkshave established themselves as a potential solution for developing mobile applications withhigher performance and functionality than web applications, while allowing developers to sharecode between platforms. In this study, employees of three smaller companies were interviewedto identify shared requirements held by small businesses to select a framework for applicationdevelopment. Based on the requirements, three hybrid frameworks were compared with thepurpose to identify which one was most suitable for small businesses. The results showed thatsmall businesses are different with varying needs and that there is no specific framework thatsuits all companies. On the other hand, it was found that all three hybrid frameworks comparedin the study were sufficiently developed to be implemented as potential solutions. With thatsaid, hybrid frameworks are not without flaws. Applications developed with hybrid frameworksdoes not yet achieve the same level of performance as native applications and is not platformindependent to the same extent as web applications.

Gamification in a sales context : Designing for motivation and commitment

Skagersten, Karl, Jobs, Anders January 2015 (has links)
For a long time developers have fought in ever growing competition, to differentiate and spread their applications through creative implemetations of groundbreaking technology. One of the newest trends in trying to produce an increase of commitment and performance in users is gamification. This means the process of introducing game-like elements to applications, in an effort to increase their interactivity and enabling motivation to develop in the user. Successful examples of gamified applications have quickly surpassed their competitors in both user loyalty and popularity, which has made many think about new fields of applications for this thechnology. In this work we want to answer questions about how gamification can be used to increase users commitment, knowledge and performance in one of these new areas, sales. Through an empiric collection of data and analysis of the case Sponsra.se as well as theories from gamification, psychology and sales, we present and give grounds for three guidelines used to design gamified applications in a sales context: “social context”, “intrinsic motivation” and “behavioral change”.
