Reimagining African Authenticity Through Adichie's Imitation MotifRodriguez, Ivette 31 July 2017 (has links)
In An Image of Africa, Chinua Achebe indicts Conrad’s Heart of Darkness for exemplifying the kind of purist rhetoric that has long benefited Western ontology while propagating reductive renderings of African experience. Edward Said refers to this dynamic as the way in which societies define themselves contextually against an imagined Other. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s fiction exposes how, by occupying cultural dominance, Western, white male values are normalized as universal. Nevertheless, these values are de-naturalized by their inconsistencies in the lived experiences of Adichie’s black, African women. Women who are at once aware of and participant in, the pretentions that underlie social interaction—pointing to the inevitability of performativity and disrupting the illusion of pure identity. These realizations interrupt Conrad’s essentialist conception of identity and reclaim diverse ontological possibilities for the Other.

This thesis is in line with the two author’s orientation within the mechanicalengineering program. The orientation is production development and the project hasbeen to develop a new packaging line based on a simple existing one. The existingsystem is located in a dairy plant and have old equipment and low capacity which theplant want to improve. The project has given the authors opportunity to use andwiden their knowledge within their area of education. The project includes a lot of research, the theory behind the project is amongst otherthings; production systems, evaluation systems, work ergonomics, models forproduction development, directives, rules and data for the machines and equipmentneeded for the project. Contact has been made with several machine suppliers to findinformation and to get prices. The method used was decided during the projects background study, the method isdeveloped by Bellgran & Säften (2005) and is a method designed purely forproduction development. Only applicable parts of the method has been used whichmeans that some parts where left out such as the part for deployment since theproject won’t be realized as of now. The method included a study of the currentsystem and similar production systems as well as interviews with the staff. This project has led to a number of concepts for a new production system that worksvery different compared to the old system. The authors are very pleased with theresulting new final concept and the improvements it lead to which is technical andeconomical. The main results is 50% improved capacity and reduced heavy manualtasks which has resulted in less need of line operators.

Mistr Budňanského oltáře a kontext dílenského provozu konce 15. století v Čechách / The master of the Budnany altarpiece and context of workshop praxis at the end of the 15th century in BohemiaŠindlář, Ondřej January 2021 (has links)
The Master of the Budnany Altarpiece (in other circumstances also called Master of the Vejprnice Altarpiece) appears to be a painting workshop operating in the 1590s, probably in Prague or hypothetically in Cheb (Eger). It is a construct created by art historians on the basis of a group of surviving works that show significant stylistic similarities. It includes three torsionally preserved painted altarpieces. These are the Budňany altarpiece, the Pruhonice altarpiece and the altarpiece of the Knights of the Cross monastery. Mostly these are works of lower quality, which, according to current interpretation, illustrate the average production of Prague workshops at the end of the 15th century. Stylistically, they are strongly derived from the production of the Nuremberg Painting Centre, but also, allegedly, from the problematically defined contemporary "court" painting in Prague. The so-called "Vejprnice panel", originally the main part of another painted altarpiece, was also included in the group for a time because of its stylistic affinity, which transformed the naming of the anonymous workshop master. The author of this conception was Jaroslav Pešina, who was by far the most active on the subject, most recently in 1978, and this thesis thus partly polemics with his conclusions. The content of this thesis...

The interactional organisation of initial business-to-business sales calls with prospective clientsHuma, Bogdana January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to break new ground by investigating the interactional organisation of real events that comprise live business-to-business cold calls. Despite being a ubiquitous part of everyday life, we know very little about how cold calls are initiated, progressed, and completed. Cold calls are unsolicited telephone encounters, initiated by salespeople aiming to get prospective clients ( prospects ) interested in their services, with the distal goal of turning them into clients and the proximal goal of getting them to agree to an initial meeting. Cold calls are often treated as a nuisance by call-takers, and salespeople must deal with reluctant gatekeepers, recurrent sales resistance, and the occasional hang-up. The training they receive often draws on outdated theories of communication and is rarely supported by empirical evidence. Thus, this study not only addresses an important domain for interactional research, but also fulfils a practical necessity for empirical research that will inform sales training and improve callers and call-takers experiences. The data comprise 150 recorded calls supplied by three British companies that sell, service, and lease office equipment. The data were collected, transcribed, and analysed within an ethnomethodological framework using conversation analysis and discursive psychology. The first analytic chapter outlines the overall structural organisation of cold calling. It documents the constituent activities within the opening, the business of the call, and the closing. It identifies and describes two types of cold calls. Freezing calls are initiated by salespeople who are contacting a prospect for the very first time. Lukewarm calls feature salespeople who claim to have been in contact with the prospect s organisation in the past. The second chapter excavates the initial turns of lukewarm calls in which salespeople ask to speak to another person within the company, with whom they indicate to be acquainted. The analysis revealed that this third-party acquaintanceship was crucial for establishing the legitimacy of the switchboard request and for improving the chances of getting it granted. The third chapter focused on appointment-making sequences in both freezing and lukewarm calls, showing that they comprise two components: a preamble and a meeting request sequence. I also highlight how salespeople exploit sequential and turn-taking mechanisms to secure meetings with prospects without giving the latter the opportunity to refuse. The final chapter examines two practices for enacting resistance in cold calls blocks and stalls and documents the range of methods salespeople employ for dealing with each type of resistance. Sales blocks expose the salesperson s commercial agenda, attempt to stop the prospecting activity, and move towards call pre-closure. In response, salespeople can challenge, counter, or circumvent blocks as well as redo their initiating actions. Stalls slow down the progress of the sales process by delaying the next phase of the sale or by proposing less commitment-implicative alternatives. Salespeople deal with stalls by either justifying their initial proposal or by spontaneously introducing new action plans, both being more conducive to the progress of the sale. The thesis contributes to a growing body of interactional research on commercial encounters by shedding empirical light on a previously unexamined setting, business-to-business cold calls. It also moves forward discursive psychology s project of respecifying psychological phenomena by documenting the communicative practices associated with persuasion and resistance. Finally, it expands the extant conversation analytic toolkit by examining new practices (such as appointment-making) and by providing new insights into key conversation analytic topics (such as requests, pre-sequences, and accounts for calling). Overall, the findings presented in this thesis challenge existing conceptions of prospecting through cold calling that are prevalent in the sales literature. The thesis puts forward a strong argument for opening the black box of cold calls to better understand these interactions and to identify good practices as the basis for communication training. Research presented in this thesis has already been used in the development of CARM (Conversation Analytic Role-play Method) training for salespeople, who reported having doubled their appointment rates. Based on the findings in this thesis, I plan to develop further training not only for salespeople but also for prospective customers, thus improving the overall outcome of cold call encounters.

Veřejné prostory historického jádra Brna - náměstí / Public Spaces of the Historic City Center of Brno - SQUARESVaculíková, Petra January 2013 (has links)
Changes of physical, functional and social structure of the city as a result of the group of variously interrelated changes and events that are fundamentally participate in the formation of the image of the urban development. This doctoral thesis is based on research of the historical city center - squared. First part is focuses on the historical development of urban texture of the inner city of Brno and its squares. We are talking about Square of Freedom, Vegetable Market, Dominican square, Jacobs square, Capuchins square and Šilingrovo square. Based on individual characteristics, describing the emergence of morphological and functional changes in Brno square was created urban classification of basic types of square. City of Brno, as the capital city of region has a significant position in the structure of settlements. This fact has become one of the key aspects for the selection of examples of European cities and their squares. The second part of the thesis is based on comparative studies of different types of historical squares. In order to define the value of public spaces, it is necessary to look at the public places of historical perspective and deal with the causes that led to the decline of the importance and role of public spaces. Austrian capital cities of region (Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg) will be examined with regard to similar climatic conditions and a common cultural and historical context of the city. Based on urban patterns and graphic diagrams of each square are observed inner relationships between shapes of square, form, function and location of the position of an artwork. Research areas are also focused on comparing aspects of transport, green space, functional use, visual unit and social activities. The public space is shaped by a set of characteristics that promote diversity and interdependence of functions. For a better interpretation of the results have been established two benchmarks - symbol of identification with the place and the Magnet (function and filling space). The objective of the thesis is to define an aspects and elements of space which were involved in square use.

Boiardo lettore di Dante. Comunicazione letteraria e intertestualità a Ferrara nella loro dimensione storicaCazzato, Matteo 29 May 2024 (has links)
