The social network analysis and geoespatial perspective: a case study to evaluate the capillary of information flow in "sociospatial" networks.

Bruno Giorgi Palmieri 04 October 2011 (has links)
The notion of social network and methods of analysis in social networks (SNA) has attracted considerable interest and curiosity to the scientific community in recent decades, as well as a growing public fascination about the more complex relationships of modern society. ARS is based on the importance of relations between the interaction of units. In social network analysis the observation of the attributes of a social actor can be understood as standard or as a structure of relationship between the units. Thus, when used at a network perspective, one can study the patterns of relational structures directly, without reference to attributes of the individuals involved. In the conventional analysis of social networks, geographical distance (or geospatial) has no effect on the mapped network. When used, this information usually takes the character of an additional attribute associated with the individual actor (or clusters of actors) of the network itself. The objective of this study is to demonstrate a "local level" (in a more "granularity") as the geospatial positioning of the actors, considered as elements of the network, can unlock significant aspects of their behavior that would not be revealed in conventional analysis. In the case study is also used concepts from other disciplines such as mathematics and physics, to verify the capillary flow of network information in three different perspectives: social, geospatial and sociospatial. The paper describes the emerging field of research in ARS, also addressing fundamental questions about how different perspectives can bring results more assertive for making initial decision.

The Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) is a public foundation linked to the Ministry of Planning. Its research activities aid the government in planning and implementing public policies. It is known to study the formation, dynamics and functioning of scientific communication is strategic for countries like Brazil. This is an important study and analysis tool that can help us to move in the so-called peripheral zone of science, where we are located today to the central area of science. Such studies are relevant to developing countries such as Brazil, as denuded relations between "products and inputs" of scientific research in the world and demonstrate how to developed countries, which holds the flow of scientific communication in the world, have behaved. The paper analyzes the production of IPEA based on periodic series "Discussion paper". This work aimed to study the periodic series on three aspects: formal aspects; quantitative aspects, and qualitative aspects. This study is characterized by the use of descriptive quantitative method, and had interviews with the aim of improving the results in qualitative terms. The study was based on analysis of time series, built over 37 years and co-author of the analysis, based on the Social Network Analysis (SNA). The results showed that the time series can be used as an indicator IPEA production in order to understand its performance over the 37 years of the existence of the series. Ipea can to observe the peaks and troughs of its production from this variable that we named Annual Production of Texts for Discussion (PATD), and can better understand how their performance is influenced by other variables and act correctively. The results related to formal analysis of the series provide a common set of characteristics related to journals that can help the IPEA in the improvement of this important channel of communication. As a result of co-authorship analysis, the study presents the results fall within the scope of studies and research using the Social Network Analysis (SNA) applied to the area of Information Science, specifically the Scientific Communication, and presents the results related collaborative networks for research or scientific collaboration, from a core group of authors linked to the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea).

Applications of the theory social network analysis and propose of a conceptual scheme of a spatial data infrastructures to road transportation of dangerous goods.

Janaina Bezerra Silva 10 December 2013 (has links)
Spatial data have been used for environmental monitoring of chemical accidents on the road transportation of dangerous goods. The Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) has been created to availability and use of spatial data, however, it emphasizes that there are no policies to support this realization. The main aim of this work is to create a conceptual scheme of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for management of transport of Dangerous Goods by road, focusing on the political context. It was identified the institutions that deal with the subject of road transportation of hazardous materials, Moreover the interviews could be consolidated. The interviews were administered by face, in 39 institutions. Interview data were ran in software UCINET, 2000 to obtain metrics related to centrality measures. The application of the theory of Social Network Analysis (ARS) could recognize the flow of data between institutions through the enrolled institutions. Furthermore, it was analyzed the network availability and use aspects of spatial data sharing between the organizations. Besides, the compiled results allowed to propose a conceptual scheme of a SDI to support technological disasters with road transportation of hazardous materials throw the SNA theory applied to investigation of spatial data sharing between different stakeholders to make prevention and risk management of the sector. Therefore, the analysis of the theory of Social Network Analysis (ARS) found that 39 (thirty-nine) institutions share spatial data between themselves, but not always in formal agreements previously established. It was further observed that there is a great desire on the part of the institutions that make the management of the accidents of this kind of transportation mode, so there are legal frameworks for data sharing for land cover uses, as a result the use of such data can be shared between different stakeholders to assist the preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery from incidents related to road dangerous goods transportation.

La Revendication du plaisir littéraire : autour de Jean Renart et Raoul de Houdenc (XIIe–XIIIe siècles) / The Claim to Literary Enjoyment : around the work of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc (12th–13th centuries)

Dupraz-Rochas, Hélène 19 March 2016 (has links)
This work focuses on a short period in French-language literary and cultural history—at the turn of 12th and 13th centuries, around the work of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc—from the standpoint of literary enjoyment. The poetic output of these two early 13th-century authors, who display a keen authorial consciousness underpinned by a meta-discursive reflection that gives more than its due to the principle of delectare, testifies to the diversity of judgements that the Middle Ages pass on this controversial notion. The literary expression of enjoyment is indeed located at the crossing of several discursive fields that specify its meaning and shed contrasting lights on its stakes. Poetry both echoes the dominant views of the Church and epitomizes the complexity of attitudes of theologians and moralists towards literary enjoyment, between outright condemnation and conditional legitimiza-tion. It also bears witness to—and accompanies—the flowering of another ideology, aristocratic and secular, far more favourably disposed towards enjoyment, since the courtly imaginative world grants literary deduit a value that is at the same time ethical, social, and political. Lastly, it reflects the medieval conception of literary Beauty, as formalized by the ars poetica of Medieval Latin, which sets the canons and takes enjoyment as a sign. As a battlefield for these often discordant views, the literary works from the era of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc testify to the appearance of a new claim to pleasure, considered both as an ethical standard and an entitlement. A certain conception of literature in the vernacular was thus born around year 1200.

Les visages de Mercure : commerce, alchimie, éloquence et arts d'imitation à l'époque moderne / The Faces of Mercury : picturing Commerce, Alchemy, Eloquence and the Arts of Imitation in Early Modern Europe

Piperkov, Nikola Mihaylov 07 July 2018 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the freestanding statues of animals set as offerings, or “anathemata”, in Greek sanctuaries of the mainland, the Aegean island and the coast of Asia Minor from the Archaic to the Hellenistic periods. Surviving are gatjeres in a catalogue, along with the bases on which animal statues stood and the epigraphic material linked with freestanding animal dedications. A second catalogue lists the animal statues recorded by ancient travelers. The contextual study treats the represented animals by categories. It questions biological data, interactions between humans and animals, the place of animals in ancient Greek literature and mythology, as well as animal representations in a religious context. The receiving sanctuaries are also examined and the meanings of sculptural “anathemata” of each category is discussed. The importance of some animals by their absence is also ta ken into consideration.Observations on ancient sculpture focus on the aesthetics of animal statues, the materials used, the place of the “anathemata”, the practicalities and cost of their transport, and the identity and specialties of the sculptors. Data drawn from the catalogues are systematically analyzed in order to draw links between sanctuaries, choice of represented animals, receiving deities, geographical implications and the diachronic evolution. A study of the dedicators' identity enables the questioning to extend beyond the religious sphere, to the political motives and social implications connected to the dedication of animal statues.

The symbolism and rhetoric of hair in Latin elegy

Burkowski, Jane M. C. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the hair imagery that runs through the works of Propertius, Tibullus, and Ovid. Comparative analysis of the elegists’ approaches to the motif, with particular emphasis on determining where and how each deviates from the cultural assumptions and literary tradition attached to each image, sheds light on the character and purposes of elegy as a genre, as well as on the individual aims and innovations of each poet. The Introduction provides some background on sociological approaches to the study of hair, and considers the reasons why hair imagery should have such a prominent presence in elegy. Chapter 1 focuses on the elegists’ engagement with the idea of cultus (‘cultivation’), and their manipulation of the connotations traditionally attached to elaborate hairstyles, of sophistication on the one hand, and immorality on the other, to suit an elegiac context. Chapter 2 looks at how the complexities of the power relationship between the lover and his mistress play out in references to violent hair-pulling. Chapter 3 focuses on the sometimes positively and sometimes negatively spun image of grey-haired lovers, as a reflection of the lover-poet’s own contradictory wishes for his relationship with his mistress; it also considers grey hair as a symbol of physical mortality, as contrasted with poetic immortality. Chapter 4 examines the use of images of loose hair (especially images of dishevelled mourning) to suggest connotations ranging from the erotic to the pathetic, and focuses on the effects the elegists achieve by using a single image to communicate multiple implications. The Conclusion considers the ‘afterlife’ of elegiac hair imagery: the influence that their approaches had on later authors’ handling of similar images.

Dark saying : a study of the Jobian dilemma in relation to contemporary ars poetica : Bedrock : poems

Boast, Rachael January 2009 (has links)
Part I of this thesis has been written with a view to exploring the relevance a text over 2500 years old has for contemporary ars poetica. From a detailed study of ‘The Book of Job’ I highlight three main tropes, ‘cognitive dissonance’, ‘tĕšuvah’, and ‘dark saying’, and demonstrate how these might inform the working methods of the contemporary poet. In the introduction I define these tropes in their theological and historical context. Chapter one provides a detailed examination of ‘Job’, its antecedents and its influence on literature. In chapters two and three I examine in detail techniques of Classical Hebrew poetry employed in ‘Job’ and argue for a confluence between literary technique and Jobian cosmology. Stylistically, the rest of the thesis is a critical meditation on how the main tropes of ‘Job’ can be mapped onto contemporary ars poetica. In chapter four I initiate an exploration into varying responses to cognitive dissonance, suggesting how the false comforters and Job represent different approaches to, and stages of, poetic composition. A critique of an essay by David Daiches is followed by a detailed study of Seamus Heaney. In chapter five I map the trope of tĕšuvah onto contemporary ars poetica with reference to the poetry of Pilinszky, Popa, and to the poems and critical work of Ted Hughes. The chapter concludes with a brief exploration into the common ground shared between the terms tĕšuvah and versus as a means of highlighting the importance of proper maturation of the work. Chapter six consists of a discussion of how the kind of ‘dark saying’ found in ‘Job’ 38-41 impacts on an understanding of poetic language and its capacity to accelerate our comprehension of reality. I support this notion with excerpts from Joseph Brodsky and a close reading of Montale’s ‘L’anguilla’. Chapter seven further develops the notion of poetry as a means of propulsion beyond the familiar, the predictable or the clichéd, by examining the function of metaphor and what I term ‘quick thinking’, and by referring to two recently published poems by John Burnside and Don Paterson. In chapter eight I draw out the overall motif implied by a close reading of ‘Job’, that of the weathering of an ordeal, and map this onto ars poetica, looking at two aspects of labour, which I identify as ‘endurance’ and ‘letting go’, crucial for the proper maturation of a poem or body of poems. The concluding chapter develops the theme of the temple first discussed in chapter one. I argue for a connection between Job as a temple initiate, who has the capacity to atone for the false comforters, and poetry as a form of ‘at-one-ment’. This notion is supported by reference to Geoffrey Hill and Rilke. Part II of the thesis consists of a selection of my own poems, titled ‘Bedrock’.
