Power, ownership and tourism in small islands: evidence from Indonesia

Hampton, M.P., Jeyacheya, Julia 14 January 2015 (has links)
Yes / This paper examines the political economy of tourism development in islands and uses Gili Trawangan, Indonesia as a case study. A longitudinal study drawing from fieldwork contributes to the discussion of how different types of power shape community development, and how the effects of hosting international tourism play an explicit role. Analysis using Barnett and Duvall’s Taxonomy of Power model reveals the interplay between the types of power over time and its effects on different actors. Results raise questions for Less Developed Countries, and particularly islands, concerning the social costs of using tourism for development. / The research on which this paper reports was partially funded by the British Academy (ASEASUK Research Committee), the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kent, and Kent Business School.

Russia and Central Asia: A Role Theory Analysis : A qualitative study of the relationship between Russia and the two Central Asian states Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Erkmar, Sara January 2024 (has links)
This thesis contends that Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine served as a turning point, signifying a critical juncture in geopolitical dynamics, heightening the pressure on the Central Asian states Kazakhstan's and Kyrgyzstan's relationship with Russia. It investigates how the dynamics in the relationship since this critical juncture have evolved. As such, this thesis is an illustrative case of Russia's relationship and claims on former Soviet republics. This thesis builds on the discourse of the interplay between structure and agency in foreign policy analysis. However, this thesis moves beyond conventional static theories on states' foreign policy by employing role theory as a conduit between agency and structure. By incorporating Opperman's (2024) understanding of altercasting mechanisms combined with theories on the behaviour of small states, this thesis presents a contextualised perspective on different patterns in the role-play between different types of states following a critical juncture. The findings reveal an intensified Russian determination to maintain its leadership position vis-à-vis Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Furthermore, the results support Guimarães and Maitino's (2019) proposition that secondary states primarily engage in re-altercasting using cues related to their status. However, the divergent outcomes in Kazakhstan's and Kyrgyzstan's role-play with Russia suggest that agency efforts are contingent on the actors' perceived position in the regional structure and the strength of their status position's interconnection with the regional leaders. This underscores the need for further research to understand and identify the critical points at which post-Soviet states can enact agency to change Russian-imposed role expectations.

Civil Society and Development: A Critical Exploration.

Howell, J., Pearce, Jenny V. January 2001 (has links)
No / Incorporated into the discourse of academics, policymakers, and grassroots activists, of multilateral development agencies and local NGOs alike, "civil society" has become a topic of widespread discussion. But is there in fact any common understanding of the term? How useful is it when applied to the South, and what difference does it make to bring the concept into the debate on development? Howell and Pearce explore the complex relationships among civil society, the state, and market in the context of democratic development. Drawing on case studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, they also unravel what is meant by development agencies¿bilaterals, multilaterals, NGOs, and international financial institutions, with their diverse approaches and agendas¿when they refer to the urgent need to strengthen civil society.

Services liberalization and productivity of manufacturing firms: Evidence from Ukraine

Shepotylo, Oleksandr, Vakhitov, V. January 2015 (has links)
No / This paper brings new evidence on the impact of services liberalization on the performance of manufacturing firms. Using a unique database of Ukrainian firms in 2001-2007, the authors utilize an external push for liberalization in the services sector as a source of exogenous variation to identify the impact of services liberalization on total factor productivity (TFP) of manufacturing firms. The results indicate that a standard deviation increase in services liberalization is associated with a 9 percent increase in TFP. Allowing services liberalization to dynamically influence TFP through the investment channel leads to an even larger effect. The effect is robust to different estimation methods and to different sub-samples of the data. In particular, it is more pronounced for domestic and small firms.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Pakistan: Corporate Engagements in the Local Community and their Social Impact

Jhatial, A.A., Cornelius, Nelarine, Wallace, James January 2014 (has links)
No / Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a mechanism for aligning company policies and practices within the socio-economic, cultural and environmental challenges facing society and, in particular, communities. Though the majority of empirical research on CSR has been conducted in Western companies, there is growing interest in CSR in transitional and developing economies, as well as Western firms working in developing countries.

Gender Bias and Digital Financial Services in South Asia: Obstacles and Opportunities on the Road to Equal Access

Rashmi, Arora 15 February 2021 (has links)
No / Several studies have shown that financial inclusion impacts poverty and income inequality and higher levels of financial inclusion lead to lower poverty and income inequality and promotes inclusive economic growth. However, the gender gap in access and usage of financial services remains pervasive across all the countries in South Asia. Patriarchal societies, low involvement of women in decision making, low empowerment of women, no voice in the family matters are some of the factors influencing women’s financial access in the region. Although literature has developed on access to financial services in general, there is not much academic work available on access to digital financial services for women. Gender Bias and Digital Financial Services in South Asia: Obstacles and Opportunities on the Road to Equal Access examines access to financial services to women in general in South Asia and specifically their access to digital financial services.

Human Remains from Middle Bronze Age Burials at Sidon, Lebanon: the 2001 Season

Ogden, Alan R., Schutkowski, Holger January 2004 (has links)
No / This report is concerned with fragmented skeletal remains dating to the Middle Bronze Age that were excavated in the 2001 campaign at Sidon, Lebanon. From 19 discrete burial units a total of 31 individuals were identifiedand assessed as to their biological characteristics. The majority of adults who could be sexed were male, many of them strongly built. The overall age distribution in this sample is characterised by a pattern commonly found in prehistoric assemblages, with high mortality during infancy and early childhood and a peak in adult mortality during early adulthood. There is a conspicuous occurrence of unusual dental traits. Jar burials, all found with remains of sub-adult individuals, represent a burial practice applied to children of a wide age range. Many burials are associated with faunal remains, mostly of sheep or goats, but also of large ungulates.
