The career transitions of two-time world basketball champions: an analysis based on biographical narratives

Ferreira Júnior, Neilton de Sousa 12 December 2014 (has links)
They played leading roles in the heyday of Brazilian basketball in the 50s and 60s. They represented the country triumphantly in a range of competitions, the most emblematic of their achievements being victories at the world championships in 1959 and 1963, and the Olympic bronze medals in 1960 and 1964. But although they enjoyed a certain level of notoriety as a result of these achievements, they weren\'t exempt from the implications of being amateur sportsmen. The athletic career as a profession was still a distant reality for them, and in order to be legitimate, their dedication to the sport had to be overwhelmingly voluntary and unpaid. These and other aspects decisively influenced both the way in which the two-time basketball champions managed their careers, and how they went through transitions, respectively. The objective of this research was to provide elements for the reflection and understanding of the phenomenon of career transition in sport, analyzing the significance and characteristics of this process through the narrative biographies of the two-time world champions Wlamir Marques, Amaury Pasos, Rosa Branca, Antônio Sucar, Carlos Massoni, Luiz Claudio Menon, Jatyr Schall, Waldyr Boccardo, Friedrich Fritz and Vitor Mirshawka. Analyzed in the light of Schlossberg\'s model of human adaptation and transition, and the theoretical reflections on career transition in sport, the narratives suggested that withdrawal from the role of an athlete, as well as the process of shifting to other spheres of life, were experiences decisively marked by the historical moment to which the two-time champions belonged. In this period where sport was an amateur affair, financial support for their athletic careers was scarce, a condition which required the athletes to adopt a strategy for managing their career which would unite sport training with education and gainful employment. This continuous compromise between athletic career and other interests gave the two-time champions such a close relationship with everyday life that the terminations and transitions of their careers were able to occur without great difficulties. The situations that give rise to this aspect of the transition are characterized by a multitude of activities making it necessary to prioritize interests; by the possibility of staying within or continuing with professional life within a sporting context as an instructor, coach or manager; by the possibility of success in other spheres of life, and, lastly, by the presence of informal support systems (family and friends). The narrative biographies brought further to light the difficulty faced by the two-time champions with regard to the reconciliation of their athletic careers with the world outside of sport, as well as the absence of formal support systems (institutional, specialized support, welfare for athletes) for the transition and life after sport

REFLECTIONS ON ATHLETE-COACH RELATIONSHIP IN THE COURSE OF ATHLETIC CAREER: ATHLETES’ PERSPECTIVE / REFLEKTIONER KRING RELATIONEN MELLAN IDROTTARE OCH TRÄNARE UNDER IDROTTARENS KARRIÄR: IDROTTARNAS PERSPEKTIV

Sandström, Elin January 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamics in the athlete-coach relationship in the course of athletic career, from the perspective of one individual sport athlete and one team sport athlete. The study tried to answer the following questions: (1) How one team sport athlete and one individual sport athlete perceive the athlete-coach relationships at different stages of the athletic career? (2) How the athlete-coach relationships change in the course of the athletic career from the perspective of a team sport athlete and an individual sport athlete? (3) How athletes perceive the characteristics of their most influential coaches? As theoretical frameworks the 3+1Cs conceptualization of coach-athlete relationship (Jowett, 2007), the multidimensional model of leadership (Chelladurai, 1990), and the developmental model on transitions faced by athletes (Wylleman & Lavallee, 2004) were used. In-depth narrative interviews were used. One team sport athlete and one individual sport athlete that had been active in their sport for at least 10 years were interviewed. Four analyses were made: sjuzet-fabula analysis, holistic-content analysis, categorical-content analysis, and critical narrative analysis. Poetic representations were used to present parts of the results. The results show that the athletes perceive their relationship to their coach differently in different stages of their career. They perceived the athlete-coach relationship as dynamic in structure. Finally their most influential coach could be found in the developmental stage of their career and this coach was important to them in different ways. The results were discussed in relation to theoretical frameworks and previous research.

Career Challenges and Coping Strategies of Swedish Elite Show Jumpers : A mixed-methods study / Svenska elithoppryttares karriärutmaningar och coping strategier : En studie med mixad metod

Reveny, Stephanie, Stafverfeldt, Elvira January 2019 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine perceived challenges and coping strategies of Swedish elite show jumpers from the holistic perspective. A mixed-methodology was used with a dominant qualitative design and a supportive quantitative design. Semi-structured interviews based on the holistic athletic career model and two surveys developed from the qualitative results were used to collect the data. The participants of the study were 5 Swedish elite show jumpers between the age of 24-29 (M=26.4, SD=2.06). The qualitative findings resulted in two category profiles of perceived challenges and use of coping strategies. The quantitative findings resulted in two individual profile for each participant. The findings identified five higher order themes of perceived challenges (psychological, financial, psycho-social, athletic and vocational) and three higher order themes of coping strategies (social support, problemfocused coping and emotion-focused coping). The individual profiles showed both similar patterns and individual nuances between the participants. Major challenges for the equestrians were financial, injuries and dealing with identity foreclosure. This study represents an effort to highlight the challenges met and coping strategies used by equestrians on elite level, to prevent ineffective coping and negative consequences such as a premature dropout.

Exploratory study - Outlining the temporal structure of the transition from junior-to-senior level in Swedish ice hockey : Phases in the junior-to-senior transition

Olsson, Kasper Lundell, Pehrson, Sebastian January 2014 (has links)
This exploratory, qualitative study focuses on the transition from junior-to-senior sports. The purpose of the study was to outline the temporal structure of this transition. The aim was to do this by achieving the following three objectives: (1) to develop a working model showing transitional phases in the transition from junior-to-senior sports, (2) to examine demands, resources, barriers, coping strategies, and outcomes within each of the four transitional phases in the working model, (3) to validate the working model through external validation, i.e. through asking the study’s participants for their opinion on the model. There were 10 male participants in this study consisting of active ice hockey players, ice hockey coaches, and a former ice hockey player; preparation phase (n=1), orientation phase (n=1), stabilization phase (n=5), junior coach (n=1), senior coach (n=1), dropout (n=1). Seven instruments were used in this study, including six interview guides and one working model. Initially a working model, depicting four transitional phases, was developed, based on theoretical frameworks and personal experience. A total of 949 raw data units were extracted from the interviews, categorized as either demands, resources, barriers, coping strategies, or outcomes within a transitional phase, and then arranged into category profiles representing each transitional phase in the working model. Furthermore, an empirical model was developed based on the working model and the category profiles. The results are, among other things, discussed in relation to theoretical frameworks and previous research.

Miljöns roll i utvecklandet och bibehållandet av sydvästsvenska elitidrottares karriärer / The role of the environment in the development and maintenance of southwestern Swedish elite athletes’ careers

Andersson, Alice, Nygren, Moa January 2020 (has links)
Elite sport is tied to high demands and the sport milieus are on a constant quest to get new top results and produce new talented athletes to achieve them. According to Systems Theory, no phenomena is to be understood without understanding the context in which it exists. Former research within the Holistic Ecological Approach have relied on this perspective to study how the environment can be formed to develop talented athletes. What has not been studies is elite athletes’ own perceptions of how the characteristics of the environment has contributed to their athletic career, and what characteristics of the environment they find important to be able to continue their elite career. This purpose of this thesis was therefore to investigate this by interviewing 10 elite athletes who compete with the world top athletes in their sport. Each of the participants lived in the south-west of Sweden and represented traditionally individual sports. The thesis concluded that the values of the family and the competition friendly culture of the childhood sports club had been important environmental characteristics in developing the career, together with interactions of key persons and key events. To continue their careers, the participants expressed the importance of a holistic wellbeing through the understanding from all parts of their environment, together with the possibility of equal sparring as most important.

"What should I do now, I had nothing to go to" : Male elite hockey players’ experiences of the transition from sports to careers afterwards – A qualitative retrospective study.

Davidsson, Oscar, Borgh, Marcus January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine former men's elite hockey players' experiences of the transition from sports to careers afterwards. All participants have played in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) which is the highest hockey league in Sweden. Eleven interviewees participated in the survey, only men aged 35-53 (M = 43, SD = 5.29). The study used a semi-structured interview guide to conduct the interviews and it was produced using the holistic career development model (Wylleman, 2019) and the athletic career transition model (Stambulova, 2009). The results showed that all participants experienced challenges in making the career transition from elite hockey players to civilian life. The biggest challenges were an uncertainty about the future in the form of not knowing what to do after their elite career. The participants felt that the support from family, friends and the club were important resources during the transition. Barriers that emerged were unpredictable transitions in the form of injuries, many participants focused only on sports, did not see that there is a life after the career and that one day there will be an end to the sports career. The coping strategies that the participants highlighted were to use a double career by studying sports or working when given the opportunity, to be aware of the career after elite hockey in the form of preparations for working life. I undersökningen deltog elva intervjupersoner, enbart män i åldrarna 35–53 (M=43, SD=5.29).

Studentidrottares upplevelser: krav, barriärer, resurser och hantering i deras dubbla karriärer : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Student-athletes' experiences: demands, barriers, resources and coping in dual careers : A qualitative interview study

Törnblom, Nellie January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate student-athletes' experiences of having a dual career and what demands, barriers and resources they experience and how they manage the demands. The selection was eight student athletes divided into seven women and one man, aged 20-35. The present study had a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, where the interview guide and the subsequent thematic analysis of the results were based on the Career Transition Model (Stambulova, 2003) and a holistic perspective based on the Holistic athletic career model (Wylleman, 2019). The analysis resulted in four main themes with associated sub-themes and sub-themes. It was the student-athletes' perceived demands, barriers, resources and the student-athletes' effective coping. The results show that the student-athletes experience both internal and external demands where there is a constant focus on high performance, which is perceived as stressful. Internal barriers as well as the external barriers, which are divided into limited time and negative consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, interact in relation to the perceived resources. The internal assets consist of purposefulness, experience of the combination of studies and sports, and two identities instead of one. The external assets consists of financial support, increased flexibility with distance studies and benefiting from other students. The perceived coping, in turn, contains three different strategies that are used in different ways by the student-athletes to cope with their dual careers. The problem-focused coping involved careful planning to piece together the life puzzle, where the emotion-focused coping dealt with mental and physical recovery, where also avoidant coping was part of the experience.

Studentidrottares upplevelser av att kombinera en elitidrottssatsning med högre akademisk utbildning : En kvalitativ studie / Student athletes' experiences of combining elite sports with higheracademic education : A qualitative study

Nordborg, Julia January 2023 (has links)
The student-athletes' experiences werecollected through semi-structured interviews with an interview guide based on The athletictransition model (Stambulova, 2003) and The holistic athletic career model (Wylleman,2019). The results are summarized through four main themes: student-athletes' perceiveddemands, barriers, resources and effective coping. The results showed that the student-athletesexperienced high internal demands from themselves where they want to succeed and performmaximally in everything they do, which is experienced as stressful. Furthermore, theyexperienced barriers in the form of external barriers, limited time and negative consequencesof the Covid-19 pandemic. Internal assets were determination, experience and external assetsin, among other things, financial support, taking advantage of other students and increasedflexibility with distance learning. Three coping strategies that helped the student-athletes dealwith this combination were problem-focused coping which involved planning,avoidant-coping and finally emotion-focused coping.
