Generalized unit commitment by the radar multiplier method

This operations research thesis should be situated in the field of the power generation industry. The general objective of this work is to efficiently solve the Generalized Unit Commitment (GUC) problem by means of specialized software. The GUC problem generalizes the Unit Commitment (UC) problem by simultane-ously solving the associated Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem. There are many approaches to solve the UC and OPF problems separately, but approaches to solve them jointly, i.e. to solve the GUC problem, are quite scarce. One of these GUC solving approaches is due to professors Batut and Renaud, whose methodology has been taken as a starting point for the methodology presented herein.This thesis report is structured as follows. Chapter 1 describes the state of the art of the UC and GUC problems. The formulation of the classical short-term power planning problems related to the GUC problem, namely the economic dispatching problem, the OPF problem, and the UC problem, are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the UC literature and to the traditional methods for solving the UC problem. In chapter 2 we extend the OPF model developed by professors Heredia and Nabona to obtain our GUC model. The variables used and the modelling of the thermal, hydraulic and transmission systems are introduced, as is the objective function. Chapter 3 deals with the Variable Duplication (VD) method, which is used to decompose the GUC problem as an alternative to the Classical Lagrangian Relaxation (CLR) method. Furthermore, in chapter 3 dual bounds provided by the VDmethod or by the CLR methods are theoretically compared.Throughout chapters 4, 5, and 6 our solution methodology, the Radar Multiplier (RM) method, is designed and tested. Three independent matters are studied: first, the auxiliary problem principle method, used by Batut and Renaud to treat the inseparable augmented Lagrangian, is compared with the block coordinate descent method from both theoretical and practical points of view. Second, the Radar Sub- gradient (RS) method, a new Lagrange multiplier updating method, is proposed and computationally compared with the classical subgradient method. And third, we study the local character of the optimizers computed by the Augmented Lagrangian Relaxation (ALR) method when solving the GUC problem. A heuristic to improve the local ALR optimizers is designed and tested.Chapter 7 is devoted to our computational implementation of the RM method, the MACH code. First, the design of MACH is reviewed brie y and then its performance is tested by solving real-life large-scale UC and GUC instances. Solutions computed using our VD formulation of the GUC problem are partially primal feasible since they do not necessarily fulfill the spinning reserve constraints. In chapter 8 we study how to modify this GUC formulation with the aim of obtaining full primal feasible solutions. A successful test based on a simple UC problem is reported. The conclusions, contributions of the thesis, and proposed further research can be found in chapter 9.

Sliding Mode Control Algorithm Development For Anti-lock Brake System

In this thesis, a sliding mode controller employing a new sliding surface for antilock brake system (ABS) is proposed, its stability is proven formally and its performance is compared with existing sliding mode controllers. The new sliding mode controller uses the integral-derivative surface, which includes error, its derivative and its integral, all at the same time. This and the already existing derivative surface, which includes error and its derivative only, are named zerothorder sliding surfaces. Their stability analysis is done using first-order auxiliary surfaces. Auxiliary surfaces equal the sliding surfaces when derivative of the error becomes zero. The first-order error surface, which includes only the error, and the integral surface, which includes error and its integral, were also designed for comparison. During design, tire brake force response is modelled as an uncertainty. Controllers are simulated on a road with an abrupt change in road coefficient of adhesion. Controller parameters used are optimized, which results in comparable stopping distances while braking on a constant coefficient of adhesion road. Effect of first order actuator dynamics with varying time constants and actuator absolute time delay were considered. Reaching and sliding properties of controllers were also investigated, using results on a constant coefficient of adhesion road. It is observed that zeroth-order sliding surfaces give smoother response for both derivative and integral-derivative cases. As the controllers employing error and derivative surfaces get unstable in the presence of actuator time delay, the integral-derivative surface, proposed in this study, stands as the best controller.

Resonant Excitation Of Ions In Paul Trap Mass Spectrometer

A Paul trap mass spectrometer has a three-electrode geometry mass analyzer consisting of two identical end cap electrodes and a ring electrode. Traditionally, the two end cap electrodes are electrically grounded and an RF potential is applied to the central ring electrode to generate the "trapping field". Ions of the analyte sample are formed in situ by electron bombardment and mass analysis of the fragment ions is performed by mass selectively destabilizing the ions from the trap. The inhornogeneities present in the trapping field (introduced either by misalignment of the trap geometry or by applying a dipolar auxiliary excitation across the end cap electrodes) give rise to various interesting phenomena including, resonance ejection of the trapped ions This thesis is concerned with taking a look into the experimental aspects associated with resonance ejection of ions caused by the dipolar excitation Additionally, u also reports the work undertaken to develop necessary instrumentation for resonant excitation experiments and my contribution to operational>zc the Paul trap mass spectrometer fabricated in the laboratory. The thesis is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter. After discussing the conditions for stability of the trapped ions, it goes on to present a brief survey of a variety of applications in literature, which have used resonant excitation. Towards the end, the motivation of the present effort and the scope of work in the thesis have been spelt out. This includes (a) redesign of the ion detector electronics, (b) design of an auxiliary excitation generator, and (c) studies on resonance ejection. Chapter 2 outlines the design considerations, circuit description and fabrication details for the ion detector electronics. The circuits presented in this chapter include (a) electrometer amplifier and (b) -3 kV DC supply for the electron multiplier detector. The electrometer amplifier amplifies the ion current signal from the electron multiplier detector and it needs to have a high input impedance and a high slew rate. The electron multiplier detector requires -3 kV DC power supply for operation. The -3 kV DC power supply is required to have a regulated output voltage with low ripple in the output. Chapter 3 presents the design considerations, circuit description and fabrication details for the auxiliary excitation generator. The auxiliary excitation generator is a three channel DDS (Direct Digital Synthesis) oscillator with independent control of frequency amplitude, and phase of the output signal. Chapter 3 also discusses the micro controller based control sub-system that allows the user to set above mentioned output parameters. The control sub-system provides a user-friendly keyboard interface and 2-line alphanumeric LCD display per channel. It also provides various bus interfaces (such as I2C and SPI) to interface with DDS oscillator ICs, amplitude control DAC, and LCD displays. The chapter then goes on to describe the implementation details of the software written for the control sub-system. The hardware design is simplified by using a micro controller as heart of the control sub-system and employing the software to handle the complex functions. As an example, the design of the keyboard interface is simplified by directly connecting a matrix keyboard to the input/output port of the micro controller. The software is used to scan the keyboard, detect key press and find out the key pressed. Nonetheless, in order to meet specific performance required for the present work, the software needs to have a sense of time, be portable and scalable. Details of the "layered" architecture adopted by as to meet these specific requirements, the lower level "driver" functions implemented for various interfaces of the control sub-system, and the higher level or the "application" software, are described. The application software uses the driver functions to accomplish various tasks required to be executed by the control sub-system. Finally, the chapter presents the design consideration and fabrication details of the coupling transformer used to couple the output of the auxiliary excitation generator to the Paul trap Chapter 4 describes the resonant excitation experiments performed as part of the present work. First of all the chapter presents the improvement in the performance of the Paul trap mass spectrometer as a result of redesigned ion detector electronics It is seen that the resolution is improved significantly due to the improved response time of the electrometer amplifier. The chapter then describes the effect of the resonant excitation on the ions and also that the frequency of the applied auxiliary excitation should be between 500 kHz to 125 kHz. Next, a number of mass spectra for different frequencies of the applied auxiliary excitation are presented. These mass spectra indicate that the resonant ejection sets in for lower masses even at lower amplitude of the auxiliary excitation where as higher amplitude is required for the resonant ejection of the higher masses. It is seen that the resonant excitation of ions improves resolution of the mass spectrum. Moreover, the auxiliary excitation results in ejection of the ions at lower amplitude of the RF voltage and thus allows extending the mass range of the mass spectrometer. We present the mass spectrum of CCI4 which is not possible to normally record in our instrument. We also present results intended to understand the relation between frequency and amplitude of the auxiliary excitation on the mass spectra of benzene. Finally, results of an interesting experiment are presented which indicates the presence of the non-linear resonance points in the Paul trap. Chapter 5 presents the concluding remarks. Hydrogen generation from dimethyl ether by autothermal reforming

<p>Heavy-duty trucks are in idle operation during long periods of time, providing the vehicles with electricity via the alternator at standstill. Idling trucks contribute to large amounts of emissions and high fuel consumption as a result of the low efficiency from fuel to electricity. Truck manufacturers are working to develop equipment using auxiliary power units to supply the trucks with electricity, which operate independently of the main engine. Fuel cell-based auxiliary power units could offer high efficiencies and low noise and vibrations. The hydrogen required for the fuel cell can be generated in an onboard fuel reformer. This thesis is devoted to hydrogen generation from dimethyl ether, DME, by autothermal reforming focusing on the application of fuel cell auxiliary power units. In the search for alternative fuels, DME has lately been identified as a promising diesel substitute.</p><p>The first part of the thesis gives an introduction to the field of DME reforming with a literature survey of recent studies within the area. Included are also results from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations.</p><p>In the following parts of the thesis, experimental studies on autothermal reforming of DME are presented. A reformer constructed to generate hydrogen to feed a 5 kW<sub>e</sub> polymer electrolyte fuel cell is evaluated with emphasis on trying to work close to a practically viable process, i.e. without external heating and using gas mixtures resembling real conditions. Additional experiments have been conducted to investigate the use of catalytic oxidation of dimethyl ether as a heat source during startup. The results of these studies are presented in Paper I.</p><p>In the second experimental study of this thesis, which is presented in Paper II, Pd-based monolithic catalysts are evaluated at small scale for use in autothermal reforming of DME. A screening of various catalyst materials has been performed followed by a study of the influence on the product composition of varying operating parameters such as oxygen-to-DME ratio, steam-to-DME ratio, and temperature.</p>

Transformatorstationer i det svenska elnätet innehar en vital funktion för att försörjningen av elenergi från producent till konsument skall fungera. Stationerna finns på olika spännings-nivåer – men de har alla en sak gemensamt: Behov av att lokalkraftsförsörjningen skall fungera enligt angivna krav. Försörjningen av en stations lokalkraftanläggning kan ske på flera olika sätt. I rapporten belyses alternativen stationstransformator, externt abonnemang, ok-lindning och ABB:s SSVT (Station Service Voltage Transformer). De olika lösningarna karaktäriseras av olika tekniska och ekonomiska aspekter och tillhörande för- respektive nackdelar. Studien utvärderar de fyra olika lokalkraftslösningarna ur ett helhetsperspektiv. Först redogörs för den bakomliggande grundläggande teorin kring lokalkraft och elkraftsekonomi. Därefter jämförs de tekniska och ekonomiska skiljaktigheterna gentemot varandra för respektive given transformatorstationstyp; fördelnings-, region- och stamstation. Vattenfall eftersöker de teknisk-ekonomiskt bästa lokalkraftsalternativen för deras transformatorstationer och rapporten skall fungera som underlag. Ur rapporten kan följande resultat och slutsatser erhållas: • Fördelningsstation: Stationstransformator och ok-lindning rekommenderas då de erbjuder teknisk funktionalitet till ett ekonomiskt försvarbart och likvärdigt pris. • Regionstation: Primärt rekommenderas alternativet ok-lindning. • Stamstation: Likväl som på de andra stationerna rekommenderas ok-lindning för försörjning av lokalkraft. Sammanfattningsvis erbjuder alla fyra alternativ de tekniska krav som finns för lokalkraftsförsörjning, men att en avvägning av vilken lösning som lämpar sig bäst för respektive transformatorstation bör utföras från fall till fall. / Substations in the Swedish electric power network have a vital function regarding the supply of electric energy from producer to consumer. The substations are represented on different voltage levels in the network – but they all have one thing in common: The need for auxiliary power to function as intended. There are different options for the supply of substations auxiliary feed. In the thesis the following alternatives are described holistic: local transformer, external power subscription, auxiliary winding on ordinary transformer, and a new (for the Swedish market) alternative from ABB called SSVT (Station Service Voltage Transformer). The distinct solutions are characterized with different technical and economic aspects and associated pros and cons. The study evaluates the four different auxiliary power solutions from a holistic view. First, the underlying essential theory about auxiliary power and electrical power economy is explained. Afterwards, the technical and economical differences are visualized for each of the solutions, and in comparison to each other for each defined substation type; distribution, region and national substation. The company Vattenfall strives for the best technical-economical alternatives for their different types of substations and the report intends to act as a supportive document. From the report, the following results and conclusions can be obtained: • Distribution substation: Local transformer and auxiliary winding is recommended due the technical functionality relative to its equivalent economic aspects. • Region substation: Primarily, the auxiliary winding alternative is recommended, mostly because of the cost-effectiveness. There are fewer alternatives in this type of substation. • National substation: The auxiliary winding is recommended as local power solution. To sum up, all of the four alternatives fill the technical requirements, but consideration for which solution for which substation type must be done on a case to case basis.

RhPt and Ni based catalysts for fuel reforming in energy conversion

Although current trends in global warming are of great concern, energy demand is still increasing, resulting in increasing pollutant emissions. To address this issue, we need reliable renewable energy sources, lowered pollutant emissions, and efficient and profitable processes for energy conversion. We also need to improve the use of the energy, produced by existing infrastructure. Consequently, the work presented in this thesis aims at investigating current scientific and technological challenges in energy conversion through biomass gasification and the alternative use of fossil fuels, such as diesel, in the generation of cleaner electricity through auxiliary power units in the transport sector. Production of chemicals, syngas, and renewable fuels is highly dependent on the development and innovation of catalytic processes within these applications. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of catalytic technologies in these areas. One of the limitations in the commercialization of the biomass gasification technology is the effective catalytic conversion of tars, formed during gasification. Biomass contains high amounts of alkali impurities, which pass on to the producer gas. Therefore, a new material with alkali tolerance is needed. In the scope of this thesis, a new catalyst support, KxWO3 – ZrO2 with high alkali resistance was developed. The dynamic capability of KxWO3 – ZrO2 to store alkali metals in the crystal structure, enhances the capture of alkali metals "in situ". Alkali metals are also important electronic promoters for the active phase, which usually increases the catalysts activity and selectivity for certain products. Experimental results show that conversion of 1-methylnaphathalene over Ni/KxWO3 – ZrO2 increases in the presence of 2 ppm of gas-phase K (Paper I). This support is considered to contribute to the electronic equilibrium within the metal/support interface, when certain amounts of alkali metals are present. The potential use of this support can be extended to applications in which alkali "storage-release" properties are required, i.e. processes with high alkali content in the process flow, to enhance catalyst lifetime and regeneration. In addition, fundamental studies to understand the adsorption geometry of naphthalene with increasing temperature were performed in a single crystal of Ni(111) by STM analyses. Chapter 9 presents preliminary studies on the adsorption geometry of the molecule, as well as DFT calculations of the adsorption energy. In relation to the use of clean energy for transport applications, hydrogen generation through ATR for FC-APUs is presented in Papers II to V. Two promoted RhPt bimetallic catalysts were selected in a previous bench scale study, supported on La2O3:CeO2/d – Al2O3 and MgO : Y2O3/CeO2 – ZrO2. Catalyst evaluation was performed in a fullscale reformer under real operating conditions. Results showed increased catalyst activity after the second monolithic catalyst due to the effect of steam reforming, WGS reaction, and higher catalyst reducibility of the RhxOy species in the CeO2 – ZrO2 mixed oxide, as a result of the improved redox properties. The influence of sulfur and coke formation on diesel reforming was assessed after 40 h on stream. Sulfur poisoning was evaluated for the intrinsic activity related to the total Rh and Pt area observed after exposure to sulfur. Sulfur concentration in the aged catalyst washcoat was observed to decrease in the axial direction of the reformer. Estimations of the amount of sulfur adsorbed were found to be below the theoretical equilibrated coverage on Rh and Pt, thus showing a partial deactivation due to sulfur poisoning. / <p>QC 20150213</p>

Šiame darbe nagrinėjami dviejų sumų santykio kalibruotieji įvertiniai, kuriuose panaudojama daugiau negu po vieną kiekvieno tyrimo kintamojo papildomąjį kintamąjį. Naudojant skirtingas kalibravimo lygtis ir atstumo funkcijas čia sukonstruoti šeši tokio tipo įvertiniai. Taikant Teiloro ištiesinimo, visrakčio ir atsitiktinių grupių metodus sukonstruoti keleto naujų santykio įvertinių dispersijos įvertiniai. Modeliuojant nauji santykio įvertiniai lyginami tarpusavyje bei su standartiniu ir A. Plikuso įvertiniais. Tiriama, kaip įvertiniu tikslumą įtakoja imties dydis ir laisvai pasirenkami svoriai, kai koreliacija tarp tyrimo ir papildomų kintamųjų yra stipri. Keičiant imties dydį pastebėjome, kad daugeliu atvejų nauji santykio įvertiniai yra tikslesni už A. Plikuso įvertini. Taip pat pastebėjome, kad parenkant skirtingus laisvai pasirenkamus svorius įvertinių tikslumas išlieka panašus. Atliekant sukonstruotų santykio įvertinių dispersijų įvertinių tikslumo tyrimą, kai keičiamas imties elementų skaičius, pastebėjome, kad visrakčio metodu gautieji dispersijos įvertiniai yra tikslesni už Teiloro ištiesinimo ar atsitiktinių grupių metodais gautus dispersijos įvertinius. Visi matematinio modeliavimo eksperimentai atlikti, naudojant matematinių uždavinių paketą MATLAB 7.10.0. / In this work we analyze the calibrated estimators of the ratio of two totals, which use more than one auxiliary variable for each study variable. Using different calibration equations and distance functions, we construct here six new estimators of the ratio. The estimators of the variance of some estimators of the ratio are constructed using Taylor linearization, jackknife and random groups methods. A simulation study is performed to compare new estimators of the ratio with the standard estimator and estimators, introduced by A. Plikusas. It is analyzed, how the characteristics of accuracy of estimators depend on the sample size and free additional weights when auxiliary variables are well correlated with study variables. The simulation results show that for some populations new estimators are more accurate than those, introduced by A. Plikusas. During the simulation, we observed, that the estimators of the variance of the estimators of the ratio that are constructed using jackknife method are more accurate than those that are constructed using Taylor linearization and random groups methods. The simulation results are obtained using the computer program that was made using the Language of Technical Computing MATLAB 7.10.0.

Professionalism of enrolled nursing auxiliary learners in a private nursing education institution in Potchefstroom, North West : a case study / Beatrix Adriana van Wyk

When people hear the word "nurse," they often think of qualities such as compassion and patience. While these are essential characteristics, nurses must go even further when striving for professionalism. Nurses also need strong morals and ethics and the commitment to always act in the best interests of their patients. The term professionalism embraces a set of attitudes, skills and behaviours, attributes and values which are expected from those to whom society has extended the privilege of being considered a professional. The core values of professionalism include: honesty, integrity, altruism, respect, responsibility, accountability, compassion, empathy, dedication, self-improvement, competency of clinical skills and knowledge. Professional nursing practice is a commitment to compassion, caring and strong ethical values, continuous development of self and others, accountability and responsibility for insightful practice, demonstrating a spirit of collaboration and flexibility. Rapid changes in the nursing sector have recently occurred across all areas and settings, making for a chaotic and seldom unstable work environment. All of these changes have impacted the ability of ENA learners to maintain high levels of professionalism and collaboration. In particular, the researcher, as an educator within a private NEI responsible for teaching ENA learners, experienced a lack of professionalism amongst ENA learners during the course of their training, as well as after their enrolment with the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Currently, there seems to be a difference between the professionalism portrayed by ENA learners and that which is expected of them. The overall aim of this research is to enhance the professionalism of ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. The following objectives have been identified in order to reach this aim: * To explore and describe professionalism amongst ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West, and * To formulate recommendations to advance professionalism amongst ENA learners in a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. This study was conducted by means of a case study approach as the selected topic focuses only on a private nursing education institution situated in Potchefstroom, North West. From the qualitative instrumental case study approach, a qualitative, explorative, contextual research design was followed. The population in the study was all the ENA learners of a private NEI in Potchefstroom, North West. A sample was selected through non-probable, purposive sampling according to inclusion criteria (n=25). Data collection was conducted by means of a ―World Café‖ method and a focus group. The data collected through the World Café method was recorded and transcribed and reconstructed by means of thematic analysis. The main theme that crystallised from data analysis was that ENA learners viewed professionalism as a set of behaviours that are displayed in their external environment. The behaviours are grouped into the following five subgroups, namely punctuality versus absenteeism, adhering to scheduling and duty hours, responsibility of observations and awareness, the role of dress code and the image of nursing and finally obedience to organisational rules and regulations and tolerance towards others. The World Café and focus group results were integrated with case records according to repetitive themes. From the results and conclusions, recommendations were formulated for nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research to enhance professionalism amongst ENA learners in general. / MCur, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Development Of A Ventilation Model For The G Field Of Cayirhan Coal Mine

Ventilation problems raised with the beginning of underground mining. In underground mining, to provide safe and healthy working conditions, ventilation should be designed properly. Especially in the planning stage of the project, to design ventilation properly is very important. The latest upgrade of the popular ventilation simulation program, known as VnetPC 2000, has been applied for the ventilation design. In this study simulation is conducted to both auxiliary and main ventilation at &Ccedil / ayirhan G Field. Information describing the geometry of a ventilation network, airway characteristics and locations, characteristics of different fans were prepared as an input. The output includes predicted airflows, frictional pressure drops, air power, losses in airway and fan operating points for different trials. After different trials it has been found that for auxiliary ventilation, where minimum required amount of air is 6 m3/s, ENGART, 30A 40SCV/60HR model fan which is the most economical one was selected. For main ventilation system, 5 fans which provide airflow more than minimum requirement were chosen. Among them the most economical one, that is ALPHAIR-5400VAX2100 HB, was selected for the mine.

Improving model structure and reducing parameter uncertainty in conceptual water balance models with the use of auxiliary data

[Truncated abstract] The use of uncertainty analysis is gaining considerable attention in catchment hydrological modeling. In particular, the choice of an appropriate model structure, the identifiability of parameter values, and the reduction of model predictive uncertainty are deemed as essential elements of hydrological modelling. The chosen model structure must be parsimonious, and the parameters used must either be derivable from field measured data or inferred unambiguously from analysis of catchment response data. In this thesis, a long-term water balance model for the Susannah Brook catchment in Western Australia has been pursued using the ?downward approach?, which is a systematic approach to determine the model with the minimum level of complexity, with parameter values that in theory are derivable from existing physiographic data relating to the catchment. Through the analysis of the rainfall-runoff response at different timescales, and the exploration of the climate, soil and vegetation controls on the water balance response, an initial model structure was formulated, and a priori model parameter values estimated. Further investigation with the use of auxiliary data such as deuterium concentration in the stream and groundwater level data exposed inadequacies in the model structure. Two more model structures were then proposed and investigated through formulating alternative hypotheses regarding the underlying causes of observed variability, including those associated with the absence of a contribution of deep groundwater flow to the streamflow, which was indicated by deuterium concentration and internal dynamics characterized by the observed groundwater levels. ... The ages of water recharging the groundwater and discharging from the catchment were estimated by assuming a piston flow mechanism. In the deeper, upland soils, the age of recharging water was considerably larger than the unsaturated zone delay would suggest; a recharge response 16 days after an infiltration event may involve water as much as 160 days old. On the other hand, the delay and the age of recharging water were much lower in the shallow riparian zone. Where the upland zone contributes significantly to discharge, the predicted difference between the rainfall-discharge response time and the average age of discharging water can be significant.
