Published Article / A controlled, voluntary human act is the basic element of criminal liability. If the act is not subject to the will, it is involuntary and excludes the act and therefore criminal liability. This defence is known as automatism. This condition of involuntariness can arise as a result of insanity or due to reasons other than insanity. If the accused were insane at the time of committing the offence and he successfully raises an automatism defence, he is sent for mandatory confinement in a psychiatric institution. The problem created by this legal provision of mandatory confinement is that an accused who was insane at the time of the crime, but sane at the time of the trial, must be confined in a psychiatric institution even though he is considered sane. In order to avoid this injustice, the courts have distinguished between "insane automatism" and "sane automatism." Cases where an involuntary action has occurred for reasons other than insanity have involved a defence of "sane automatism" and, if successful, have resulted in full acquittal. The reason for creating the term "sane automatism" was to avoid the said unjustified functioning of the law. Amendments to legislation in South Africa have given courts wider discretion and they are no longer compelled to confine the accused to a psychiatric institution. The legislation is no longer unjust, with the result that the distinction between "insane automatism" and "sane automatism" is no longer necessary. The automatism defence (no longer "sane automatism") must still be retained, but as an ordinary defence that is indicative of an involuntary act, and therefore the absence of one of the elements of a crime (but without a specific indication of whether it is sane or insane automatism). Automatism must therefore be limited to grounds for exclusion of the element of an act, i.e. the voluntary and personal conduct of the accused.

Designing Anthradithiophene Derivatives Suitable For Applications in Organic Electronics and Optoelectronics

Anthradithiophene (ADT) derivatives have proven to be a front-runner in the world of small molecule semiconductors for organic electronics and optoelectronics. This is mainly due to the improved stability, easy tuning of chemical and physical properties, and impressive device performance that these molecules possess, especially in organic field effect transistors (OFET) and organic photovoltaics (OPV). The second chapter of this dissertation shows that reducing the amount of alkylsilylethynyl groups, used for functionalizing and solubilizing the ADT backbone, does alter the chemical, physical and crystallographic properties of ADTs. These changes offer the opportunity to study and observe different intermolecular interactions as well as monitoring their influence on sulfur scrambling in solid state. Additionally, from the early days ADTs and functionalized ADTs have been synthesized as isomeric mixtures. In chapter three, I demonstrate a new and simple method that can separate the syn and anti isomers of the F-TES-ADT and F-TEG-ADT chromatographically. The effects of isomeric purity on crystal packing and field effect transistor performance were studied extensively. Chapter four of this dissertation reveals a new generation of acceptor (electron poor) ADT derivatives obtained by attaching cyanide as electron withdrawing group (EWG) to the ADT chromophore. An extensive study was conducted on CN-ADT (acceptor) molecules in small molecule (F-TES-ADT) donor/ small molecule (CN-ADT) acceptor binary BHJ blends as well as P3HT/CN-ADT/PCBM ternary BHJ blends. Photophysical studies of the Donor/ acceptor blends (interface, domains, and crystal orientation) were conducted to obtain a better understanding of the film morphology and its effect on solar cell performance. Finally, the last part of the dissertation, Chapter five, focus on studying singlet fission in ADT derivatives, as well as the effect of varying the size of the alkylsilylethynyl functional group (used for solubilizing the ADT backbone) on altering the electronic couplings and how can that potentially affect the singlet fission rate in these molecules. We also tried to inspect the extent of the correlation between long-range order in crystal packing and singlet fission by monitoring singlet fission rate and efficiency for ADT derivatives with different thin film morphologies.

Läroboken styr till stor del vilket innehåll som behandlas i matematikundervisningen. Med detta i åtanke har fem svenska läroboksserier har utsatts för en latent och manifest innehållsanalys av hur de presenterar de aritmetiska räknelagarna och räknereglerna. I studien framkommer både kvantitativ och kvalitativ data. Den kvantitativa datan indikerar att få läroboksserier tar upp associativa och distributiva lagen explicit. Den kvalitativa datan pekar på att räknelagarna ofta beskrivs i andra sammanhang. Flera exempel i läroböckerna gör generaliseringar som riskerar leda till begränsad förståelse för räknelagarna och räknereglerna. / In mathematics education textbooks to a large extent determine what is offered for students to be learnt. With this in mind, in this study, five Swedish textbooks series is reviewed in a latent and manifest content analysis approach where both quantitative and qualitative data is presented. The result of the quantitative data indicate that only a few textbooks series mentions the associative and distributive law in explicit manners. The result of the qualitative data shows that the basic laws of arithmetic is often described in other contexts. Many examples in the textbooks makes generalizations that may lead to limited understanding of the basic laws and rules of arithmetic.

Integration – the Tool for a Better Future? : A Descriptive Ethical Analysis of the Dutch Integration Policy

This master thesis in applied ethics is a descriptive ethical analysis of the current integration policy in the Netherlands. The main purpose is to describe and critically discuss the Dutch integration policy. In the recent years there has been a major shift in the Dutch integration directive, from a liberal to a harsher integration policy. This thesis contributes with a characterization of integration by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, European Commission and within the Dutch context, particularly a characterization of values and ideals in integration policies. Also, an attempt is made to analyze what the underlying motives and core values are, and which values should be fostered. Moreover, an overview is given of the various dimensions of integration. The second part of this thesis explores the Dutch integration policy in light of the European Commission's eleven common basic principles for immigrant integration policy in the European Union. In addition, ethical implications concerning the Dutch integration policy will be stated. Finally, the consequences of failing integration will be identified and some practical recommendations for the Dutch integration policy will be provided.

AFFORDABLE, ALTERNATIVE TEST METHOD FOR MEETING CIVIL AVIATION REDUCED VERTICAL SEPARATION MINIMUM (RVSM) REQUIRMENTS ON MILITARY/COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 23-26, 2000 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / A recent Air Traffic Management (ATM) initiative has reduced certain oceanic routes from a 2,000-foot vertical separation minimum to a 1,000-foot (300 m) separation minimum between flight levels of 29,000 feet and 41,000 feet. As a result of this initiative, an aircraft transitioning from the Continental United States (CONUS) to Europe or Asia will be required to have a validated, certified altimeter reporting system within the specified tolerances. The aging military airframes are not currently Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) certified. The impact on military deployment time to foreign theatres as well as high- fuel cost makes this a high-priority DoD issue. This paper describes the test and evaluation (T&E) challenge, viable solutions and test method for meeting the RVSM requirements in an approved, affordable, and least down-time (minimal aircraft modification) manner. The test method described herein utilizes a PACER aircraft in formation with the RVSM candidate aircraft. The RVSM is just one of the many Global Air Traffic Management (GATM) requirements which must be met for military aircraft to fly within premium airspace during overseas deployment. The commercial equivalent of GATM is Communications Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM). Our focus will be on meeting the RVSM certification requirements as related to the test environment.

SIMULTANEOUS DATA PROCESSING OF MULTIPLE PCM STREAMS ON A PC BASED SYSTEM

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / The trend of current data acquisition and recording systems is to capture multiple streams of Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) data on a single media. The MARS II data recording system manufactured by Datatape, the Asynchronous Realtime Multiplexer and Output Reconstructor (ARMOR) systems manufactured by Calculex, Inc., and other systems on the market today are examples of this technology. The quantity of data recorded by these systems can be impressive, and can cause difficulties in post-test data processing in terms of data storage and turn around time to the analyst. This paper describes the system currently in use at the Strategic Systems Combined Test Force B-1B division to simultaneously post-flight process up to twelve independent PCM streams at twice real-time speeds. This system is entirely personal computer (PC) based running the Window NT 4.0 operating system with an internal ISA bus PCM decommutation card. Each PC is capable of receiving and processing one stream at a time. Therefore, the core of the system is twelve PCs each with decommutation capability. All PCs are connected via a fast ethernet network hub. The data processed by this system is IRIG 106 Chapter 8 converted MIL-STD-1553B bus data and Chapter 4 Class I and II PCM data. All system operator inputs are via Distributed Component Object Modeling (DCOM) provided by Microsoft Developers Studio, Versions 5.0 and 6.0, which allows control and status of multiple data processing PCs from one workstation. All data processing software is written in-house using Visual C++ and Visual Basic.

The purpose of the study was to examine, in a population of ninth grade high-school students,whether autonomy support from parents and the fulfilment of basic psychological needspredicted participation in physical activity both in leisure time and in PE classes. Based onprevious research we hypothesised that autonomy support would have an indirect effect onparticipation in physical activity in leisure time and school sports through the psychologicalbasic needs.The study involved 193 students from ninth grade in the Swedish school system.Mediation analyses were performed to investigate the stated hypotheses. The results showedthat a positive indirect effect from autonomy support on participation in physical activity inleisure time through psychological basic needs. Further there was no statistically significantcorrelation between autonomy support, basic needs and participation in PE classes.Based on this study we concluded that autonomy supports as well as the psychologicalbasic needs are two important factors to focus on to get high-school students to be physicallyactive. / Syftet med föreliggande studie var att undersöka huruvida autonomistöd från föräldrar samtuppfyllelse av grundläggande psykologiska behov predicerade deltagande i fysisk aktivitetbåde på fritiden och till skolidrott bland elever i årskurs 9. Baserat på tidigare forskning varvår hypotes att autonomistöd skulle ha en indirekt effekt på deltagande i fysisk aktivitet, bådepå fritiden samt till skolidrotten, via psykologiska grundbehov.I studien deltog 193 elever från årskurs 9 i det svenska skolsystemet. Medieringsanalyseranvändes för att undersöka de uppställda hypoteserna. Resultatet visade en positivt indirekteffekt från autonomistöd till deltagande i fysisk aktivitet på fritiden genom de psykologiskagrundbehoven. Vidare fanns det inget statistiskt signifikant samband mellan autonomistöd,grundbehoven och deltagande på idrottslektioner. Baserat på föreliggande studie drogförfattarna slutsatsen att autonomistöd samt de psykologiska grundläggande behoven är tvåviktiga faktorer att fokusera på för att fler elever skall bli fysiskt aktiva.

The Contribution of Inflammatory Cells to the Progression of Prostate Cancer

In recent years, the causal relationship between inflammation and cancer has gained wider acknowledgement and acceptance. While various types of immune cells are involved in the process of inflammation, macrophages represent the major inflammatory component of many tumors. Derived from circulating monocytes, these cells migrate to tumor sites in response to molecular cues present within the tumor microenvironment. Once there, interactions with neoplastic cells shape the differentiation and functional orientation of macrophages into two phenotypically distinct subsets: the “classically” activated M1 macrophages and the “alternatively” activated M2 macrophages. The preeminent paradigm in macrophage-related cancer research is that within the tumor stoma, macrophages acquire an M2 phenotype characterized by production of pro-angiogenic factors, ECM degrading enzymes and up-regulation of anti-inflammatory responses, thereby promoting tumor progression. M1 macrophages, on the other hand are thought to exert anti-tumorigenic effects due to their production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). While the generation of ROS during immune responses is an important aspect of immune regulation and host defense, excessive ROS production has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various degenerative diseases, including cancer. Yet, despite the well-established role of M1 macrophages in generating high levels of ROS via NADPH oxidase (NOX), M1 macrophages are still largely viewed as anti-tumorigenic. Hence, this study reevaluates the complex interaction between prostate cancer (PCa) cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs), and operates on the premise that PCa cells promote a pro-tumor microenvironment, denoted by increased inflammation and oxidative stress, in part, through M1 macrophage-mediated, NOX-derived ROS production. Accordingly, immunofluorescent analysis of prostate tissue microarrays demonstrated an influx of M1 macrophages in prostate carcinoma. Immature monocytes co-cultured with the poorly tumorigenic prostate cell line, LNCaP, demonstrated changes in morphology and protein expression consistent with M1 macrophage polarization. PCa cells co-cultured with M1 macrophages displayed significantly higher intracellular ROS levels. Furthermore, M1-mediated ROS generation through NOXs increased prostate cell invasiveness and anchorage-independent growth. Taken together, results from this study suggest a potentially novel pro-tumorigenic function of M1 macrophages in early PCa progression, and aid in understanding the complex role of inflammation in cancer.

Novel Interactors of X-linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein : Expression and Effects on Tumor Cell Death

<p>Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, has during the last decade received a lot of attention due to its involvement in a large number of pathological conditions. Since death is always irreversible, it is important for cells to fully control the initiation and execution of this process. One of many apoptosis-regulatory proteins is XIAP, which blocks the action of caspases, a family of proteases that are important during apoptosis. However, apoptosis inhibitors have to be tightly controlled since too little cell death can lead to the development of tumors and other diseases. This thesis is the result of an aspiration to fully understand the function and regulation of XIAP.</p><p>By using the yeast-2-hybrid system, we identified two novel binding partners of XIAP. The first, GPS2, was found to bind XIAP and inhibit its ability to block caspase-activity. In addition, GPS2 induced caspase-mediated cell death in two different tumour cell lines and XIAP inhibited this effect.</p><p>The second binding partner, Nulp1, preferentially bound XIAP in the presence of the apoptosis-inducer staurosporine. Nulp1 induced or sensitized cell lines to cell death when overexpressed, but this was not blocked by caspase-inhibitors or XIAP, suggesting a different reason for binding than apoptosis regulation. With the aim to understand the Nulp1-XIAP interaction, we continued to study Nulp1 <i>in vivo</i> and <i>in vitro</i>. We studied three different splice variants of Nulp1 and found that they were regulated by poly-ubiquitination and nuclear shuttling. Also, Nulp1 was expressed in embryonic mice, especially in the cortical plate, hippocampal neurons and cerebellar granular neurons. Expression of Nulp1 decreased with age but was still present in cerebellar deep nuclei and Purkinje cells of adult mice. </p><p>To summarize, we have identified GPS2 as an apoptosis-inducing factor and an inhibitor of XIAP <i>in vitro</i>, and Nulp1 as a XIAP-interacting protein during staurosporine-induced apoptosis.</p>
