Nästan som medicin : En intervjustudie om yrkesverksammas upplevelse av att arbeta med biblioterapi som metod för att främja psykisk hälsa och välbefinnande / Almost like medicine : An interview study of professionals' experience of working with bibliotherapy as a method to promote mental health and well-being

Eriksson, Lisa January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this master thesis is to investigate how people who work with bibliotherapy view the method itself and if it may enhance mental health and well-being. The study also wants to investigate what possible disadvantages that the practitioners consider with the method. To investigate this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve persons who in some capacity work with bibliotherapy in Sweden. The interviews took place during March of 2020. The result of the study suggest that bibliotherapy can be an effective method of promoting mental health and well-being. Bibliotherapy is consistently described in the interviews as a kind of coping strategy and an undemanding activity that the participant performs on the basis of their own conditions. Literature is described to have a therapeutic property which can give us insights and understanding of our own life situation and a sense of coherence. The term bibliotherapy is described as broad and difficult to define. There is a common desire by the interviewees to continue working with bibliotherapy to a greater extent than today and several participants highlights the importance of more clinical studies on the method.

Exploring Therapeutic Outcomes Through Picture Books, Other Stories, and Art Therapy

DeSmet, Sara 01 May 2012 (has links)
Therapeutic outcomes are explored in a series of case studies where art therapy and storytelling interventions are used with clients. Stories utilized in the study include picture book stories, fairytales, and self-generated narratives. Additionally, the study’s participants created art responses that took such forms as illustrations and altered books. Research questions that were investigated were: When children receiving art therapy engage with stories created by others or the author, how do they respond?; When children receiving art therapy create their own stories, how do they respond?; and Is there archetypal or other psychologically meaningful content in the author’s picture book? Main subjects of the study were clients ages 9 to 12 receiving individual and group therapy services from the author at The Whole Child in Whittier, California. The author was also a subject in the study. She studied her picture book for significant content. A case study approach was used to highlight themes of psychological or therapeutic relevance for all participants. Biographical data as well as responses to interventions were recorded in assessment and progress notes. Additionally, the therapist shared a piece of her own creative writing for each case study in order to understand clients through the storytelling process. Then the biographical data, story, art responses, and creative writing pieces were studied to look for any connections and to draw conclusions. Based on these results, it appears that sharing pre-existing stories with clients or asking clients to create their own stories has therapeutic value. Not only did these interventions appear to aid clients’ expressions, but they also helped the therapist gain important understandings about clients. Similar analysis of the author’s picture book brought to light themes of psychological importance that increased her self-understanding.

Idag har jag ett bearbetat trauma tack vare biblioterapi : En kvalitativ intervjustudie av biblioterapi som terapeutisk metod för barn eller ungdomar med en förälder i fängelse / ”I have a processed trauma today thanks to bibliotherapy” : A qualitative interview study of bibliotherapy as a therapeutic method for children or adolescents with a parent in prison

Mangialardo, Viktor January 2023 (has links)
This thesis investigates the effects of bibliotherapy on children and adolescents with a parent in prison. In addition, it also investigates why someone would choose to use bibliotherapy when leading a group of children and adolescents with a parent in prison. In addition, it aims to compare the effects of structured bibliotherapy to an unstructured bibliotherapy done without guidance. The organization BUFFF is used in order to get in contact with people that had a parent in prison when they were young and used bibliotherapy to cope and improve their mental wellbeing. Specifically, Pia Bergström who led a bibliotherapeutic group focused on writing at BUFFF.                   Interviews were conducted with Pia Bergström because of her involvement as a leader of bibliotherapy and four adults who, during their childhood, had an incarcerated parent and used bibliotherapy in different ways to endure and process their situation. Audio from the interviews were recorded and transcribed. During their transcription the interviews were slightly adjusted to preserve the interviewees anonymity and to make the transcriptions easier to read. The answers were then organized into thematic subjects that were used to structure the analysis. Most of the answers were positive towards bibliotherapy and the effect that it has had on the interviewee’s lives. Everyone interviewed would recommend bibliotherapy as a form of therapy both for children with an incarcerated parent or other traumatic circumstances. The importance of context was evident, and it seemed to help the interviewee’s cope because they realized that they were not alone and could experiment in a safe environment, something that the two people interviewed that used bibliotherapeutic methods on their own did not experience. Ultimately the thesis results answered what they aimed to investigate and indicate that bibliotherapy can have a positive impact for many children in trying situations.

”Det var så skönt att få visa sig sårbar” : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om gruppterapeutiska upplevelser från biblioterapi / ”It felt really good being able to show vulnerability” : A qualitative interview study on group therapeutic experiences from bibliotherapy

Willbo, Malin January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative interview study is to study group therapy experiences from bibliotherapy. With a social psychological approach, this is studied through theories of group cohesion, feedback and self-disclosure. 5 semi-structured interviews with participants who have participated in bibliotherapy at some point in the last ten years were conducted. The results show amongst many conclusions that bibliotherapy, as a group therapeutic approach with the above-mentioned theories, proves to be a positive method of therapy among the participants who, among other things, applied to the therapy for mental illness. Results in this study also show bibliotherapy as a therapeutic method, acting in an environment that already at the beginning of the therapy makes the participants feel a good connection with other participants.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower in the EFL Classroom : Childhood Sexual Abuse, Reversed Gender Roles and Trauma Responses

Nilsson, Molly January 2022 (has links)
This essay is a literary analysis of the childhood sexual abuse trauma in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and its possible usefulness in the EFL classroom. Previous scholarly work has lacked in discussing how abuser closeness and a female perpetrator have affected the main character Charlie’s trauma. Therefore, theories regarding female perpetrated sexual assault and betrayal trauma have been applied and it has been concluded that many of the harmful effects of these theories correspond with Charlie’s behaviours. By reading and working with the novel through critical pedagogy, which according to Antero Garcia concerns exploring what is beneath surface level, students are offered multiple ways in which they can deal with their emotions whilst improving their language skills (96). In addition, trauma-informed teaching can be used for students to understand trauma consequences, implied trauma and to prevent students being retraumatized. The epistolary format also shows students that reading and writing about one’s emotions, through bibliotherapy and scriptotherapy, can improve one’s mental health and help one feel less alone in experiencing difficult situations or emotions.

Bibliotherapy and Bullying: Teaching Young Childrento Utilize Peer Group Power to Combat Bullying

Spencer, Rebecca Lyn 09 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Bullying is a major concern for school-age children. This study compares the use of bibliotherapy and didactic instruction techniques for teaching anti-bullying strategies to young children. The study explores 36 first graders' perceptions of bullying and their perceptions of their roles and responsibilities in bullying situations. In comparison to the control group, students who were taught specific bully intervention skills, both through didactic instruction and bibliotherapy, reflected an increased understanding of bullying, used a larger bully vocabulary, and demonstrated more specific and varied actions in response to bullying from pre-test to post-test conditions. Participants in the group who received didactic instruction demonstrated more positive change in both describing the concept of bullying (77.2%) and providing adaptive responses to a hypothetical bullying situation (144%) than the bibliotherapy (33.3%, 44%) and control groups (13.4%, -15%), possibly due to the explicit instruction and repetition of concepts students received in the didactic group. These data suggest that children benefit from explicit instruction and rehearsal about how to combat bullying. Recommendations for practice are to schedule more time when planning to use bibliotherapy, to simplify concepts and use repetition, and to integrate social/emotional concepts into regular class activities.
