What About Martin? : a thorough analysis of the 90's sitcom

Saffold, Tisia Xiare Vere 02 August 2012 (has links)
Representations of Blacks have had its limitations on television. The Black sitcom has proven to be a fruitful place of analysis as it relates to the presence of Black bodies and the portrayal of Black culture. The lack of accurate depictions and the portrayal of a diverse Black culture has been a challenge for many years. The Cosby Show (1984-92) however, has been hailed for representations of Blacks as upper class, educated, and portraying a two-parent house hold. With this, an overwhelming amount of scholarly research on Black sitcoms surrounds The Cosby Show. Other shows that have a fair amount of scholarship include Amos and Andy (1951-53-) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-96). As I am constantly reminded through song lyrics and social networks that my peers are still reflecting about the sitcom Martin, I am also intrigued by its lack of exploration by scholars in the field. As Martin does not portray status and wealth, or educated professionals it is my assumption that this lack of research is reflection of the presumed low significance of the show. There appears to be an obvious divergence between academic and Hollywood's coverage of the show and viewers engagement with the show. 15 years after the show has aired new episodes, many of my peers indulge as if it never left. This paper seeks to further explore the sitcom and its critiques. Through a survey I poll viewers to explore how viewer's opinions can inform future discussions about the show. My exploration of the show through song lyrics, social network posts and survey results will reveal valuable components and complicate discourse of the shows reception, ultimately contributing to the scholarship on Black sitcoms. / text

Not only are we interested in the theme that connects the authors – both problematize the slavery to which minorities are submitted in Brazil, especially afro-Brazilians – but also regarding the literary aspects, principally when it comes to orality, once both authors write their texts to recite them to an audience. They make use of what Zumthor (1997) has called “poetics of orality” or “performance”, in which the transmission and reception of the literary text relies on the voice and the ear. Furthermore, we analyze how the context of each author influences the object of their works, as well as a possible contribution of these texts to draw attention to the social exclusion of the black population in Brazil. Thus, this dissertation is divided into three chapters, whose rationale intends to dialogue with the studies of Antonio Candido (1988; 2011; 2000), Antoine Compagnon (1999), Regina Dalcastagné (2008); Leila Perrone-Moisés (2006), João Alexandre Barbosa (1990) and Heloísa Toller Gomes (1988), concerning literary representation, and Zumthor (1993;1997; 2007), who writes about orality and performance.

This study aimed to understand how CONAR identified the occurrence of it. For its rulings, the self-regulation court provides a mixed legal system, ie, the judgment of infringement was based on advertising ethics code Brazilian Advertising Self-Regulation - CBARP in the Federal Constitution and other national laws. Thus we present a brief survey of legislative norms that guided federal racial discrimination in the media: Article 20 of Law Cao (Law No. 7.716/1989) and Articles 44 and 45 of the Racial Equality Statute (Law 12.288/2010). Subsequently, we selected the cases judged by CONAR who was asked about the practice of racial discrimination from 1980 to 2011, having been selected 24 ethical processes. We have identified the characteristics of those cases considered by the ads CONAR, under considered by the ads CONAR, under which arguments and under what circumstances this selfregulation agency had filed the procedure or imputed accountability measures. Moreover, the survey noted cases that have addressed the issue of mandatory representation of black racial people in commercials as a foreknowledge of the Racial Equality Statute. As a perspective, we used the categories of Antonio Sérgio Alfredo Guimarães and theory of media Muniz Sodré. CONAR found racial discrimination in 5 cases, and 19 were filed where the agency did not recognized any ethical breach. From these decisions there were 4 cases that had any appeal, but only in in one among them thare was a change of decision by CONAR: the change of restraining penalty for filing. Yet the 3 cases that had been maintained resource decisions: 1 filing, 1 penalty alteration and 1 restraining penalty.

Black Food Trucks Matter: A Qualitative Study Examining The (Mis)Representation, Underestimation, and Contribution of Black Entrepreneurs In The Food Truck Industry

Ariel D Smith (14223191) 11 August 2023 (has links)
<p>Food trucks have become increasingly popular over the last decade following the Great Recession of 2008. Scholars have begun to study the food truck phenomenon, its future projected trajectory, and even positioning it within social justice discourse along cultural lines; however, scholarship has yet to address the participation of Black entrepreneurs in the food truck industry.</p> <p><br></p> <p>The objective of this dissertation is to expand the perception of Black food entrepreneurs within the food truck industry by interrogating how Black food truck owners are misrepresented, under analyzed, and underestimated. Using a series of interdisciplinary qualitative methods including introspective analysis, thematic coding analysis, and case studies, I approach this objective by addressing three questions. First, I analyze movies and television to understand where Black-owned food trucks are represented in popular culture and how they are depicted. In doing so, we come to understand that Black business representation, specifically Black food truck representation consistently falls victim to negative stereotypes. These stereotypes can influence the extent to which Black food truck owners are taken seriously and seen as legitimate business leaders in their community. Second, I interview 16 Black food truck entrepreneurs to understand why the mobile food industry appealed to them and how it has become a platform for them to explore other opportunities. Finally, I review eight cities that have launched Black food truck festivals and parks within the last 6 years to gain an understanding of the collective power wielded by Black food truck owners and its impact Black communities. Moreover, this dissertation challenges the myth that collectivism does not exist among Black entrepreneurs and the Black community broadly.</p>
