The Residential School Settlement with Yukon First Nation survivors : a positive form of relationship renewal?Edelman, Spencer James January 2012 (has links)
Reconciliation attempts have occurred world-wide, i.e., Australia and South Africa. Recently, Canada has initiated a reconciliation process with its First Nations people for the historical injustices and their experience with residential schools. The purpose of this study was to explore the current Canadian reconciliation process and to determine whether it was considered by First Nations participants as an effective approach to relationship renewal. This study was completed with the White River First Nations in the Yukon Territory. Using an exploratory descriptive design as a qualitative approach, with person-centered interviewing, eight participants were interviewed twice. The data revealed that the current reconciliation process was driven by political expediency rather than anchored by a desire to improve relationships. The findings suggest that Canada’s reconciliation model is unsuitable and may be at risk for failure in the near future. Finally, participants revealed that they wanted more healing as a step towards reconciliation. / vii, 117 leaves ; 29 cm

Increasing the High School Graduation Rate of Native American Students in Public SchoolsGibson, Sierra M 01 January 2015 (has links)
Native American students obtain the lowest on-time high school graduation rate among all races and ethnicities in the United States. Through an analysis of previously published literature and seven interviews conducted by the author, this paper sets out to identify the key barriers Native students face when working toward their high school diploma. This paper will argue that, together, a history of abusive educational tactics and an institutionally racist policies and practices adopted by the U.S. Department of Education have made it challenging for Native students to complete high school on time.

MEMÓRIAS DA ESCOLA NOSSA SENHORA DE LOURDES, RS: NARRATIVAS DA EXPERIÊNCIA EDUCATIVA EM UMA INSTITUIÇÃO CONFESSIONAL CATÓLICA (1960-1970) / NOSSA SENHORA DE LOURDES SCHOOL MEMORIES, RS: NARRATIVES OF EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN A CONFESSIONAL CATHOLIC INSTITUTION (1960-1970)Velasquez, Cinára Dalla Costa 29 March 2016 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul / The purpose of this Thesis was to show a study about the educational history in Rio Grande do Sul, specifically, within the catholic confessional education and the students educational formation, in a boarding school, which was organized by the Imaculado Coração de Maria Sisters from 1892 to 1980. It were problematized the subject s memories that lived the formation as boarders, in a catholic religion private school, in a community from Vale Vêneto in a Rio Grande do Sul central region. People that lived the specifically educational experience, they were students from a catholic confessional school with mixed boarding school. Such specificity stands up because the mixed boarding is characterized by a diferential trace, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul s state, it wasn t offered this kind of boarding school. From the analyses of different storage media, written, visuals and orals, about the history of the school, evidences indicated that school consolidation, since the decade of 1954, when it started to offer junior high school, transforming itself in a first catholic religious high school with a mixed boarding, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. By following this reasoning and from this intersection of different memorialistic documents analyzed, as draft, chronic books, school and students pictures and the oral narratives done by a methodological approach by the oral history, it allowed to notice that it became a remarkable school because it had being a confessional and offering a mixed school that accepted both genders as students. A scholar institution that received its students in an internal condition with a different profile, because they were from different places in the state, which turn it an Educated Education space with strong cultural hybrid, and also, understood as a total institution by closing trace representation that it established the student and contributor s narratives, internal in the period from 1960 to 1970, markedly the isolation and family separation emerge with acute critical woven for them. It interested me to understand how the ex-students narrative memories were built/ the recompose the educational experience in a college / Catholic boarding school and gives way to such training , either in your personal or professional experiences ?The student s memory building, from the representations produced in the interviews showed that the educational experience educated and the formation that they received were produced when they were boarders shows narrative thread of thanks as discipline, although recognized as being extremely rigid, brought them lessons for their personal and professional lives, the values embodied in their lives, such as limits, the organization, are heavily credited to this rigorous disciplinary training; paradoxically bring the critical tone about the closure, especially on the isolation and longing for the family, this seems to be the sad mark of your images-memories woven light of that past. The research allowed pointing out that the memory is woven through the evocation of an experience in a group in an institution and bears the marks of the team, so the memory of the College boarding Sisters - well expressed by them- brought the marks. A memory community, graduates who lived in the school admitted on condition; memories profiled in a strong narrative thread that says the feeling of belonging to the school and the recognition and gratitude to training, but the longing and isolation, brought, also, the critical tone.

"Forward You Must Go": Chemawa Indian Boarding School and Student Activism in the 1960s and 1970s / Chemawa Indian Boarding School and Student Activism in the 1960s and 1970sRuhl, Melissa 06 1900 (has links)
vii, 122 p. : ill. / High school student activism at Chemawa Indian School, a Native American boarding school in Oregon, transformed the curriculum, policies, and student life at Chemawa. Historians have neglected post-WWII boarding school stories, yet both the historical continuities and changes in boarding school life are significant. Using the student newspaper, the <italic>Chemawa American,</italic> I argue that during the 1960s, Chemawa continued to encourage Christianity, relegate heritage to safety zones, and rely on student labor to sustain the school. In the 1970s, Chemawa students, in part influenced by the Indian Student Bill of Rights, brought self-determination to Chemawa. Students organized clubs exploring Navajo, Alaskan, and Northwest Indian cultures and heritages. They were empowered to change rules such as the dress code provision dictating the length of hair. When the federal government threatened to close Chemawa many students fought to keep their school open even in the face of rapidly declining enrollment rates. / Committee in charge: Dr. Ellen Herman, Chairperson;

Implementering van groepsterapie by adolessente koshuisdogters, waarvan die ouers geskei is / The implementation of group therapy with adolescent girls in hostels, whose parents are divorcedZwarts, Hannelie Louise 01 1900 (has links)
This study deals with the implementation of group therapy with adolescent girls in hostels, whose parents are divorced. The researcher came to the conclusion that teachers, who do duty in the hostel, once a week, cannot give enough attention to those girls who have problems. This conclusion raised the question of whether it would be feasible to implement group therapy in the hostel. There was insufficient literature, concerning group therapy with normal children, and therefore the researcher initiated a pilot study. The aim of the study was to implement group therapy with adolescent girls in the hostel. There were many girls in the hostel whose parents were divorced and so the sample was further curtailed. A practical manual including worksheets were compiled to be easily accessible to any Educational Psychologist doing group therapy. The group therapy was practically implemented and confirmed that group therapy can be implemented. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Sielkundige Opvoedkunde (Voorligting))

Adaptasie van adolessente wie se ouers buitelandse diens verrigGeyser, Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
This study endeavoured to determine how adolescents, cope when they are left behind in South Africa (without their families) while their parents do long term foreign service abroad. To determine how adolescents cope an expansive literature study was firstly undertaken. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation by McCubbin served
as the theoretical basis. Secondly, an empirical study was undertaken. The A-Cope index was used to determine which coping patterns and coping behaviour adolescents apply when dealing with stressful situations such as when they stay alone in South Africa while their parents serve abroad. The empirical study revealed that the coping patterns and coping behaviours that adolescents respectively apply the most, are avoidance of problems. The most unlikely coping behaviour that adolescents will apply, is to seek professional assistance. Recommendations are made in the interest of adolescents, their parents and the social worker at the Department of Foreign Affairs. / Social Work / M.A.(Social Work)

Vivenciando a internação do filho prematuro na UTIN: (re)conhecendo as perspectivas maternas diante das demandas neonatais / Living through the hospitalization of the premature child in the neonatal-ICU: recognizing the maternal perspectives facingBárbara Bertolossi Marta de Araújo 16 October 2007 (has links)
The lived experiences as a professional, in the daily life of Neonatal-ICU, with mothers of premature babies brought about the desire to understand the intentional action of these women in staying in the mothers hospital boarding during the hospitalization of the child. The study aimed as object the Lived of the staying mothers in the hospital unit during the hospitalization of the premature child in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit of a maternity District Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and the goal to learn about the mothers motives to stay in the hospital unit during the hospitalization of her premature child. It was adopted as methodological support the Alfred Schutzs sociological phenomenology, seeking the understanding in the face to face relation and through the inter-subjectivity, the intentionality of the supporting mother in remaining in the mothers hospital boarding during the childs hospitalization, as a social action. This action corresponds to a projected one, filled with subjective meanings which may be driven to the past, present or future. The motive for instigates the undertaking of the action directed to the future and the motive why is present in the past undertakings and may influence in the present actions because they are not forgotten. !2 (twelve) premature-new born mothers, were the research subjects, which stayed in the mothers boarding during the childs hospitalization. The phenomenological interview was the technique used to capture the intentional action, which consisted of 3 guiding questions, which are: What do you have in view when you accept to stay in the mothers hospital boarding for mothers? How are the living experiences in the mothers hospital boarding? And, how has you life been after your decision to stay in the mothers hospital boarding? The analysis had as basis the apprehension of the motive for which made it possible to capture the sense of action for this mother in remaining in the hospital unit during the hospitalization of her premature child, stated through the following categories: Childs caring: facing the great challenging of having a small baby; to stay near the premature child: the maternal presence contributing for the more rapid recovery; and, Support and Help one another: the hope re-forced day by day; and, the motive why came about from the living context of these mothers during their childs hospitalization at the neo-natal ICU, understanding that the maternal presence is linked to the role of being a mother, socially built and inserted in their world-lives. This study has made it possible to reflect over the creation of a support group to these mothers, providing psychological aid, leisure, interchanging experiences among those mothers, and mother and father' meetings as well, for the goal to provide easier family relationships to go over difficulties in that moment. It also stresses the need to value this mother as mother and citizen, providing support for the family's visitors, offering better infra-structures and properly conditions for her staying in a more healthy way.

As instituições totais no romance: a trajetória do herói no ambiente repressor / The Total Institutions in the Novel: the hero\'s path in the coercive environmentAna Carolina Rhormens de Santana 15 March 2017 (has links)
This research intends to analyze the protagonists\' path in three novels, which present a common point: the oppression arose in a specific setting, a boarding school. The above-mentioned novels are Misty Morning by Vergilio Ferreira, O Ateneu by Raul Pompeia and The time of the hero by Mario Vargas Llosa. The aim is to draw a comparison among these characters experiences from the period before the admission to the boarding school until their return to the society, in order to be able to evaluate the confinements effects on the behavior of each one of them. As a theoretical basis, this research resorts to the concept of total institution, defined by the sociologist Erving Goffman, to better examine to what extent these environments are totalizing institutions, that make that their boarders live painful mortifications, degradations and, as a consequence, changes in their conception about themselves and the others. It also resorts to the idea of docile bodies conformation, developed by Foucault, to investigate how the particularities of coercive methods adopted by those institutions leaders may be taken as variations of the same system of disciplinary control, which aims to determine the boarders behavior, inducing him to such a level of alienation that appeases his autonomy and ability to question this system in which he is inserted. There is also the intention to explore these protagonists physical and intellectual growing up process, which proceeds, after their struggles with the repressive environment and the others characters, towards a critical awareness of reality, and to consider the possibility of setting the mentioned narratives under the title of Bildungsroman.
