One thousand and four hundred Nile tilapia fingerlings, initial average weight 4.98±0.08 g, distributed in 28 small cages of 1m³, with 50 fish each, were used. Three levels (8, 16 and 24%) of hydrolyzed feather meal (FM) inclusion and two groups, one with and the other without synthetic aminoacids supplementation (AAs), were evaluated during 65 days. Control treatment with neither feather meal nor aminoacids supplementation was also employed, totalizing seven treatments and four replications. Productive performance analysis including total length (TL), weight gain (WG), apparent food conversion (AFC), survival (SU), condition factor (CF) and protein efficiency rate (PER) was performed at the end of the experiment, coupled to body parameters such as visceral fat index (VFI) and hepatosomatic index (HIS). Blood samples were collected for erythrocytes counting and determination of hemoglobin, hematocrit, average corpuscular volume (ACV) and average corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (ACHC). The entire fish was used for the analysis of centesimal composition, namely, moisture (MO), protein (P), ether extract (EE) and mineral matter (MM)). Diet costs per kilo of WG were also assessed. Treatments did not influence (p>0.05) SU, HIS, CF, MO and MM and best results for FM and WG were those of treatments with 8% FM with or without AAs supplementation. AFC was higher and PER lower in treatments with 24% FM without supplementation. P rate was lower in treatment with inclusion of 24% FM without supplementation when compared to control, whereas EE had higher levels of inclusion when compared to control. Hematologic parameters were kept within the species´s normal variation level. Treatment with 8% FM with supplementation presented lower feeding costs. Results show that feather meal may be used in diets for Nile tilapia up to 8% inclusion, with or without supplementation of AAs, without any liability in performance, chemical composition and higidity.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ana_Paula_Sartorio_Chambo.PDF: 2055310 bytes, checksum: 572f35f1e55b0455d7858396549a5810 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-08-26 / Fundação Araucária / This study was conducted in the reservoir of Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant, located in the western region of Paraná State, during the March/2010 to April/2009 and aimed to study the chemical composition (macronutrients, micronutrients and toxic heavy metals), the bioaccumulation of biologically essential metals, copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn), and non-essential toxic heavy metals, cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) in tissues of the armado (P. granulosus), mollusks (L. fortunei) and aquatic plants (E. densa and E. crasssipes), beyond the study of water quality and sediment under modified atmospheres, such as reservoirs for multiple uses, during the season the year. Fifteen fish were collected monthly to determine the factor relative corporal condition (Kn), the index of viscera total (IVT), visceral fat index (IGV), the hepatosomatic index (HSI) and the metal pollution index (MPI), as well as samples the sediment, water and the biomarkers golden mussel and two species of aquatic macrophytes, E. crassipes and E. dense. It was observed that the carcass of the armado bioaccumulate in the following order Fe, Ca, Zn, Pb, Mn, K, Mg, Cr, Cu e Cd. The nitrogen was concentrated in greater proportion in the carcass (110.58 g kg-1) and fillet (109.96 g kg-1) and phosphorus in the liver (43.26 g kg-1). The Cd was present in 50% of carcass samples (1.20 mg kg-1) and skin (1.00 mg kg-1) and 100% of the samples of gills (1.00 mg kg-1). The Cr was detected in 33% of carcass samples (2.75 mg kg-1) and gills (1.00 mg kg-1) and 17% of fillet samples (2.00 mg kg-1). The presence of lead was found in 100% of samples with levels ranging from 20.17 mg kg-1 in the carcass and 7.83 mg kg-1 in the fillet. The distribution of Cu, Zn and Mn in the sediment and water did not change seasonally. The analytical method used did not detect the presence of Cu and Zn in the water sample. The physical and chemical variables of water were not oscillated along the year season. The index calculated for the E. densa responded significantly seasonal fluctuations, with the highest rates were obtained during the summer followed by spring, winter and autumn. The armado captured during the experiment were contaminated by heavy metals Cd, Cr and Pb at levels above those recommended by current legislation. The rate of metal contamination suggests that the liver is the organ most bioaccumulate heavy metals in the gun.

Studies in Metallosupramolecular Chemistry

Cottam, Justine Ruth Amy January 2008 (has links)
Metallosupramolecular chemistry involves the construction of nanoscale molecular assemblies by reacting metal atoms with bridging organic ligands. The metal atoms act as a type of molecular ‘glue’ binding together the organic ligands in specific orientations. Thus, appropriate combinations of metal ions and ligands lead to the controlled self-assembly of interesting one-, two- and three-dimensional molecular aggregates. This thesis details the preparation of a range of novel flexible bridging heterocyclic ligands using conventional organic synthesis, and then explores their reactions with a variety of transition metal precursors. By varying the nature of the organic ligand and the transition metal precursor, new and exciting supramolecular topologies and architectures can be formed. A total of forty-eight ligands were synthesised in this work, forty-seven of which are new compounds. The majority of the ligands synthesised were based around commercially available bisphenol cores. All forty-eight of the ligands had nitrogen heterocyclic groups as coordinating units. The ligands discussed in this thesis can be divided into three main sections. The first involves the synthesis and coordination chemistry of two-armed ligands based around the Bisphenol A, Bisphenol Z and Bisphenol AP cores. The second section describes the synthesis and coordination chemistry of the larger Bisphenol P and Bisphenol M based two-armed bridging ligands. The third section describes the synthesis and coordination chemistry of various multi-substituted ligands, including tripodal ligands based around a trisphenol core, four-armed ligands and six-armed ligands. The two-armed bisphenol based ligands proved very successful as synthons in metallosupramolecular chemistry and produced many products with a variety of different metal atoms. The complexes characterised included discrete dimeric products, coordination polymers and a number of helicates, including a dinuclear quadruply-stranded helicate. Multi-armed ligands are topical, because they have multiple coordination sites that are capable of binding and bridging multiple metal atoms. Such coordination can lead to the construction of cage-like species and complicated networks. A series of three-armed ligands based around a trisphenol core were synthesised with the intention to use these to form such species on coordination with appropriate metal salts. Indeed, one of the products of self-assembly was an interesting M₃L₂ cage. Various other multi-armed ligands were also investigated. The ligands and complexes in this thesis were characterised by a variety of structural techniques, such as ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and X-ray crystallography when crystals were obtained. The crystal structures of twenty-seven ligands and forty-three complexes are described.

Modélisation multi-physique en génie électrique. Application au couplage magnéto-thermo-mécanique / Multiphysics modeling in electrical engineering. Application to a magneto-thermo-mechanical model

Journeaux, Antoine 18 November 2013 (has links)
The modeling of multi-phycics problems in electrical engineering is presented, with an application to the numerical computation of vibrations within the end windings of large turbo-generators. This study is divided into four parts: the impositions of current density, the computation of local forces, the transfer of data between disconnected meshes, and the computation of multi-physics problems using weak coupling, Firstly, the representation of current density within numerical models is presented. The process is decomposed into two stages: the construction of the initial current density, and the determination of a divergence-free field. The representation of complex geometries makes the use of analytical methods impossible. A method based on an electrokinetical problem is used and a fully geometrical method are tested. The geometrical method produces results closer to the real current density than the electrokinetical problem. Methods to compute forces are numerous, and this study focuses on the virtual work principle and the Laplace force considering the recommendations of the literature. Laplace force is highly accurate but is applicable only if the permeability is uniform. The virtual work principle is finally preferred as it appears as the most general way to compute local forces. Mesh-to-mesh data transfer methods are developed to compute multi-physics models using multiples meshes adapted to the subproblems and multiple computational software. The interpolation method, a locally conservative projection, and an orthogonal projection are compared. Interpolation method is said to be fast but highly diffusive, and the orthogonal projections are highly accurate. The locally conservative method produces results similar to the orthogonal projection but avoid the assembly of linear systems. The numerical computation of multi-physical problems using multiple meshes and projections is then presented. However for a given class of problems, there is not an unique coupling scheme possible. Analytical tests are used to determine, for different class of problems, the most accurate scheme. Finally, numerical computations applied to the structure of end-windings is presented.

Advanced liquid and gas NMR methods for probing topical materials

Javed, M. A. (Muhammad Asadullah) 20 May 2019 (has links)
Abstract The present thesis exploits advanced liquid and gas NMR methods for the characterization of various interesting materials. The methods used to study the structural properties of thermally modified wood, ionic liquids, cements, shales, and porous organic cages include MRI, NMR cryoporometry, Laplace NMR, multidimensional Laplace NMR, as well as ¹²⁹Xe and ¹⁹F NMR. The commonality factor in all the studies is the usage of either inherent or introduced liquid or gas molecules to probe the topical materials. The MRI method was utilized to visualize the water absorption phenomena in the thermally modified pine wood. High-resolution images made it possible to observe the spatial distribution of free water and the changes in the rate of absorption of water in wood samples modified at different temperatures. The images also helped to resolve the individual resin channels. T₂ maps enabled us to observe the changes in the relaxation values of free water in thermally modified wood as compared to their unmodified reference wood samples. The multidimensional Laplace NMR methods were exploited to study the structural and dynamical properties of a novel halogen-free, boron-based ionic liquid (hf-BIL). NMR self-diffusion (D) experiments showed the presence of two coexisting dynamic phases in hf-BIL. Multidimensional D − T₂ correlation experiments made it possible to determine the T₂ relaxation times of the slow and fast diffusing phases. T₂ − T₂ relaxation exchange measurements allowed quantifying the exchange rates of anions and cations between the phases. Moreover, the theoretical modeling of the experimental data revealed that the slow diffusing phase was composed of anion-cation aggregates, while the fast diffusing phase was comprised of free anions and cations. ¹²⁹Xe NMR analysis of the xenon adsorbed in the cements and shales helped us to determine their porous structures. The method exploits the high sensitivity of the chemical shift of ¹²⁹Xe to its local environment. The chemical shift value of ¹²⁹Xe enabled us to estimate the size of the mesopores in the cement samples. The exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) measurements were used to determine the exchange rates between the free gas and mesopores of the cement samples. ¹²⁹Xe NMR spectra of the shale samples provided information about pore sizes and paramagnetic compounds. ¹H NMR cryoporometry measurements of the shale samples immersed in acetonitrile made it possible to analyze the pore size distribution ranging from 10 to over 100 nm. Moreover, T₂ − T₂ exchange measurements helped us to quantify the exchange rates of acetonitrile in the shale samples. Xenon and SF₆ were used as internal reporters to gain versatile information on adsorption phenomena in the cage and window cavities of the crystalline porous organic cages. ¹²⁹Xe NMR analysis of the adsorbed xenon helped us to determine the diffusion coefficients and activation energy of diffusion as well as thermodynamic parameters. With the help of T₂ relaxation time values, it was possible to estimate the exchange rates between cage and window cavities. Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) experiments resolved a window cavity site, which arises from crystal defects in porous organic cages. In addition, ¹⁹F NMR analysis made it possible to estimate the relaxation rates and diffusion coefficients of SF₆ gas in porous organic cages. Modelling of the T₁, T₂ and diffusion data confirmed that the cage to window exchange is the completely dominating mechanism for ¹²⁹Xe T₂ relaxation. T₁ relaxation is dominated by diffusion modulated dipole-dipole relaxation (DDinter) and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) relaxation due to local cavity mobility. Whereas, in case of SF₆ T₂ data, the dominating mechanism is diffusion modulated dipole-dipole relaxation and for T₁ the local tumbling of SF₆ in cage cavity is the key dynamics behind the dipole-dipole and CSA mechanisms. / Original papers The original publications are not included in the electronic version of the dissertation. / Welfare evaluation by image analysis of laying hens in different housing systems and environmental conditions.

Barbosa Filho, José Antonio Delfino 03 February 2005 (has links)
The battery cage system is a very polemic issue in European countries, being the most commonly raised concerns focused on the spatial restrictions of the hens, which might compromise important comfort movements affecting their welfare conditions. This work aimed to evaluate aspects related to behavior and welfare of hens comparing a conventional housing system (laying cages in battery) with another system using litter, lair and roost. In addition, the effects of environmental conditions (stress or comfort) on final egg quality and behavior responses (analyzed by precision techniques) were evaluated in different laying hen lines. Two groups of 20 birds (10 Hyline W36 and 10 Hy-line Brown) at the beginning of production phase were submitted to two environmental conditions (26°C with 60% RU or 35°C with 70% RU) and two housing systems (cages in battery or litter) during two consecutive weeks. During the evaluation period, bird behaviors were recorded by video cameras. Total egg production was analyzed according to egg weight, shell thickness, specific gravidity, Haugh unit, yolk colorimetric parameters and shell porosity. Eggs were microbiologically analyzed in order to detect Salmonella sp contamination in yolk and eggshell. A significant (P<0.05) reduction in quality parameters was observed in eggs from laying hens raised under heat stress, mainly in those from laying cage system. In relation to behavior, the housing system in litters proportioned the expression of all natural behaviors and those related to bird comfort, which permitted to improve welfare conditions. In conventional system (laying cages) was verified that birds tried to manifest their natural behavior in spite of lacking condition for it. This impossibility for executing natural behaviors promoted an increase of stress provoked by the housing system. Analyzing both systems and environmental conditions, hens from Hy-Line W36 showed the better performances.

The effects of complexity, choice and control on the behaviour and the welfare of captive common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)

Badihi, Inbal January 2006 (has links)
There are numerous guidelines recommending that captive primates live in complex environments in which they have the opportunity to make choices and the ability to control aspects of the environment, despite the lack of quantitative evidence to suggest these qualities improve welfare. Complexity, choice and control (the ‘Three Cs’) are inter-related and therefore it is complicated to separate their effects. The main aim of this thesis was to examine how the ‘Three Cs’ affect welfare, using the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) as a model. Behavioural measures and preference tests were used to determine the impact and significance of the ‘Three Cs’ on welfare. Experimental manipulations were natural (i.e. access to outside runs), or unnatural (e.g. pressing a button to control additional illumination). In a series of different studies, marmosets were moved to larger and more complex enclosures, were allowed to choose between indoor cages and outdoor complex enclosures and were able to control additional white light or coloured lights in their home enclosures. The results of these studies show that appropriate levels of each of the ‘Three Cs’ had a positive influence on the welfare of the marmosets, especially on youngsters. Although having control over light, and increased illumination itself improved welfare, providing a choice of access to outside runs (which were more complex and allowed the marmosets greater control over their activities) resulted in the greatest welfare improvement for marmosets of all ages. Loss of access, or control, did not appear to have a negative impact. The marmosets were housed in pairs or in family groups, in the different studies. A cross-study comparison shows that the composition of the groups affected the behavioural response of adult marmosets to environmental enrichment. Unexpectedly, it was also found that, when housed in standard laboratory conditions, adult marmosets were more relaxed when housed in pairs than when housed with their offspring. A secondary aim of the thesis was to quantify welfare indicators and activity budgets of common marmosets in a range of different social and physical contexts, and to compare this with the behaviour of wild marmosets, to increase our understanding of what is “normal” in captive situations. It is concluded that it is critical to sub-divide locomotion and inactivity into different levels to interpret these measures accurately. Levels of calm locomotion increased in enriched environments, while levels of relaxed inactivity and scent marking decreased. A number of recommendations for the care and housing of marmosets are made.

All samples of diets and individuals were held between August and November 2013 in the reservoir cages. Individuals throughout the cultivation, as well as take in the natural food, were feed a control 40 and 32% crude protein for three stages of cultivation. For sampling isotopes dorsal muscle samples were taken from 15 individuals captured, collected food samples 15, periphyton and seston (local water filtration). All samples were dried in an oven at a temperature between 55-60 °C for a period ranging from 36-72 hours, and ground in a mortar and pestle manual to a fine powder. were performed sweeps on material samples filters. The powder samples were stored in tin capsules for conducting the analysis of stable isotopes 15N and 13C for tissue samples and diets which were performed at UC Davis Stable Isotope Laboratory Facility, University of California - USA. The field was monitored the limnological variables with the use of a multisensor. In laboratory Limnologia and Water Quality - LIMNOAQUA, analyzes were performed of growing water, in order to characterize the conditions of abiotic cages. The results of the ratios of C and N isotopes for diets and diets of fish and the contribution rates were analyzed using the R software, version 3.2.2. For data of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen, for samples with normal distribution and homogeneous variance was applied one-way ANOVA and Tukey test a posteriori. Where the ANOVA assumptions were not satisfied we used the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test and paired Wilcoxon. The values of the isotopic ratios were analyzed individually by period. Regarding the values of the contribution rates of the diets were analyzed together for each period. It was used Mixsiar Mixture Model to determine the relative contribution of diets. Limnological variables did not vary during the study period, only variations were observed for total phosphorus concentrations in the final cultivation stage and chlorophyll-a in the entire study period. Samples of feed showed significant differences in isotopic composition of 13C, and the values of 15N in tissue samples from fish between periods I and II, occurring distinct discriminating rates in diet-tissue interface for both isotopic elements of C and N in all diets. The waste feed supplied contributed to the high availability of natural foods, especially for diet based on seston. The periphyton diet (26.6%) had reduced contribution compared the diets of seston (39.2%) and fish feed (34.3%) for fish reared in Santa Cruz. In this context, it can be concluded that natural diet - seston and periphyton - (65.8%) contributed to the growth of Nile tilapia cultured in cages, changing the paradigm that only provided food is assimilated by the fish, contributing so almost exclusively on the growth of this species / A presente pesquisa investigou a contribuição relativa dos alimentos naturais e dietas comerciais assimilados na nutrição de tilápia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus) cultivada em tanques-rede no Reservatório de Santa Cruz-Apodi/RN.

Silva, Josemar Raimundo da 25 March 2008 (has links)
The present work had objective to analyze the economic-financial viability of aquaculture projects investment in cages for native species (jundiá, pacu and curimba). Aquaculture/fishculture inside of agribusiness has been presenting a growing interest and it should continue like this next decades, tends in view the stagnation in the fish offer originating from of the capture and of the growing increase in the demand for food with the increment of the world population. The increase of the consumption of fish and the progress of the aquaculture demand information for taking of decision about the economic viability of the enterprises in this area, mainly to native species. The investors, producers, technicians, fomentation organs and other institutions affect to the area, need safe information for taking decision about economic-financial viability of aquaculture/fishculture projects. In this sense this work verified that the production of native species in cages in the reservoir of Itaipu is unviable for the species jundiá (Rhamdia quelen) and curimba (Prochilodus lineatus), and viable for the Pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus), which presented better adaptive to the production system and the climatic conditions. Analysis of Investment Return, Rate of Return, profitable Index, Internal Return Rate (IRR), Net Present Value (NPV) and Payback Period, all favorable ones were shown positively, with positive probability of occurrence ranging between 5% to 95% (90%) of the return of investment in a period among two (2) for three (3) years for the Monte Carlo simulation method.
