Marco Fernández, Raquel January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the phenomenon of linguistic interference in the use of the verb ser in different marital status (single, married and divorced) in spanish spoken by catalans living in different territorial areas of Catalonia. Our theory is that individuals who reside in territorial areas where catalan is the most spoken language tend to use the verb ser + marital status rather than the verb estar + marital status due to the influence of catalan. We have used a quantitative methodology, i.e. we have collected data through a survey. The results of our study confirm our theory that individuals who reside in territorial areas where catalan is the most spoken language tend to use the verb ser + marital status rather than the verb estar + marital status due to the influence of catalan.

Pasivní bilingvismus v rámci Iberského poloostrova / Passive Bilingualism within the Iberian Peninsula

Mrva, Jan January 2017 (has links)
(in English) The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the current state of passive bilingualism on the Iberian Peninsula, from the point of view of native monolingual Spanish speakers in contact with Galician, Catalan, Basque, and Portuguese langauges. The thesis consists of two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part, it tries to describe bilingualism, its perception throughout history and other concepts that are directly related to it in a comprehensive way. The key topic which is analysed is, however, receptive/passive bilingualism. For better context, it also focuses on the sociolinguistic development of the (co)official languages of the Iberian Peninsula from a diachronic perspective and, concurrently, language policy involved. In the practical part, it establishes the hypothesis which is later being demonstrated on the results of the original internet survey. Later on, proceeds to comment and evaluate them.

Manuel Brunet i Solà (1889-1956).

Montero Aulet, Francesc 28 October 2011 (has links)
This doctoral thesis deals with the intellectual biography of the writer and journalist Manuel Brunet (Vic, 1889, Figueres, 1956). It reconstructs the life and professional studies of the author, and the most important facets of his literature and journalism. In addition, it examines his literary texts. A special emphasis has been placed on the study of journalistic production of Brunet and on the analysis of the professional profile of the author. Examination and assessment of its production has been accurate, including a classification of the items and a comparison of his journalistic style with that of other contemporary authors, both Catalan (Josep Pla and Joseph M. de Sagarra), French (Charles Maurras and Léon Daudet) and English (GK Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc). The latter part of the work analysises the condition of "victor won" of Manuel Brunet after the Spanish Civil War, and how this author is an example of a whole generation of conservative Catalan nationalist witers who lived a difficult situation after the conflict.

Bassegoda Pineda, Enric 02 December 2011 (has links)
Fra Bernat Hug de Rocabertí (c.1420-1485) was a prominent member of the Order of the Hospital in the Crown of Aragon in which to attain the dignity of Castilian of Amposta, the most important dignity in the Crown. This work is a historical biography of him, since he entered into the Order by the hand of his brotherin- law, fra Joan de Vilagut, until he became a confidant of King Joan II and his side took part in Catalan Civil War in the fifteenth century. In parallel, Rocabertí also devoted himself to poetry and wrote at least two pieces, the Estrampa, so far unpublished, here this work is published critically, and La glòria d’amor, a long narrative poem, which is a study of possible chronology. Moreover, also studied other people linked to Bernat Hug, like his brothers, authors of some interesting battle letters, also published for the first time, or their brothers-inlaw, among them Joan de Vilagut, also a poet, and Guillem Tinter, who had a poetic Exchange with Vilagut. The whole work is accompanied by transcription of an interesting collection of documents.

Roig, Sílvia 01 January 2013 (has links)
My dissertation explores the narrative of Aurora Bertrana (1892-1974), an unknown writer today, but a successful and recognized female author in Catalonia and Spain during the mid 20th century. The written work of Aurora Bertrana is almost never mentioned in manuals of literature. Relegated almost to absolute oblivion, her rich, intellectual writting has not received the attention it deserves. I have studied seventeen of Bertrana’s novels –practically her entire oeuvre– written in Catalan and Spanish, including the following excellent books that have escaped critical attention: Ariatea (1960), “El pomell de les violes” (mn.), L’inefable Philip (mn.), La aldea sin hombres (mn.), La madrecita de los cerdos (mn.), Entre dos silencis (1958), La ninfa d’argila (1959), Fracàs (1966) and La ciutat dels joves: reportatge fantasia (1971). I have analyzed her writing, published and unpublished, from a feminist approach, taking into account the intellectual history of Spain and Catalonia. Bertrana’s strong commitment to controversial, social issues reveals her association with the modern and noucentists Catalan trends of her time. Her novels also reveal a unique interest in Europe at war and in non-Western cultures and lifestyles that draws attention to the situation of women in different circumstances and cultural geographies. My research is therefore anchored on interpretive and theoretical parameters that intersect, with a consideration of gender, such as class-and-gender, war-and-gender and travel-and-gender. I have used the work of feminists such as Simone De Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, Jelke Boesten, Margaret and Patrice Higonnet, Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo, and Julia Kristeva to help assess Bertrana’s engagement with gender and socio-political issues. This approach is particularly well suited for a writer like Aurora Bertrana, a Catalan and Republican intellectual woman forced into exiled during the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Crous Castañé, Berta 30 January 2009 (has links)
Crous' doctoral dissertation (2009) describes the characteristics of Catalan and Mandinga grammatical structures expressing illnesses, signs and symptoms, physical and psychic traits, etc. (like ser diabètic 'to be diabetic', estar refredat 'to have a cold', tenir febre 'to have a fever', tenir un bony (a la cama) 'to have a lump (in one's leg)', tenir mal de panxa 'to have a bellyache' or tenir mal a la panxa 'to have an ache/a wound in one's belly', venir un atac de tos 'to have/suffer a cough attack', agafar febre 'to catch a fever' or fer mal el cap '(someone's head) to hurt'). This dissertation shows that the conceptualization and the categorization of the pathological states, the way speakers perceive some aspects of the states (such as their temporality, the corporal extend, the causality or the degree of affectedness), and the relations between these states and the other two participants in the situation (a person and his/her body parts) are not only manifested in the vocabulary of the language, but also in the construction and distribution of the participants in a sentence.

Au-delà des Pyrénées : les artistes catalans à Paris au tournant du XXe siècle / Beyond the Pyrenees : catalan artists in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century

Karp Lugo, Laura 30 June 2014 (has links)
Attracted by the artistic emulation and the possibilities offered by the French art market, nearly all Catalan artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth went to Paris, in a broadly international movement. This essay mainly focuses on the mobility of artists, on artistic and cultural transfers, and on the reception of artworks. How did these artists integrate into the Parisian artistic milieu at the turn of the century? How did living in Paris affect their artistic production? And, alternatively , how did their presence affect the Parisian artistic landscape? Thus, joining the current concerns about transnational artistic relations, this work aims to fill a gap in the historiography of contemporary Catalan art and of the artistic relations between Catalonia and France. By providing a fundamental role to the critical reception, this work throws light on how the international capital of art - that was Paris - reacted to the integration of these foreign artists and to their work.

Barcelona: La ciudad del bilingüismo : La utilización del castellano y catalán / Barcelona: The city of bilingualism : The use of Castilian and Catalan

Katarina, Lazarevic January 2016 (has links)
First, this thesis aims to find, classify and explain the different reasons why the inhabitants of Barcelona use Catalan, Castilian or both languages according to a given situation. On the other hand, based on the results, it is intended to better understand the situation in Catalonia and the Catalans in a sociolinguistic field. The focus lies on answering the question “Is there a language that is preferably used by citizens living in Barcelona?”. With the use of a quantitative method analysis this thesis will reveal if there is a determining variable that influences when choosing Catalan or Castilian? Diferent types of resources have been used to verify and have legitimacy in the arguments presented in the thesis. The historical moments survived by the Catalan inhabitants, the identity (culture and linguistic) that they managed to preserve, and the bilingualism that exists in Barcelona, are topics that will pervade through the entire thesis. The result of the study shows that the respondents generally prefer to use Castilian rather than Catalan, for the reason of the origins (parents or grandparents) from outside Catalonia.
