Zpracování periodik v ČR a v zahraničí, vývoj směrem k RDA pravidlům / Processing of periodicals in the Czech Republic and abroad, a move towards RDA rules

Burkertová, Zuzana January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work is to evaluate the current procedures and to indicate the development of the cataloging practice towards the RDA rules based on research and analysis of bibliographic production serials in selected Czech and foreign libraries. The diploma thesis is divided into several chapters. After introducing the issue of serial documents follows the chapter devoted to the standards and resources for cataloging the continuing resources that the catalogers should know. The next chapter deals with the FRBR and its application to the serials. Part of the chapter dealing with RDA rules from the serials perspective is also the analysis of these rules according to the FRBR structure available in the RDA Toolkit. Three chapters are devoted to the analysis of bibliographic processing, first in foreign libraries, then in Czech libraries, and in the last chapter there is a comparison of selected periodicals in foreign and Czech libraries. At the end of the thesis are presented the impacts of application of the FRBR model and RDA rules on serials cataloging. Keywords serials - periodicals - continuing resources - rules RDA - FRBR - FRBRoo - PRESSoo - cataloging - bibliographic record - library

Bland anonyma kvinnor, oidentifierade män och okända par : En studie om hur kön, genus och queer närvaro aktualiseras via bildkatalogiseringens praktik / Amongst anonymous women, unidentified men, and unknown couples : A study of sex, gender, and queer presence within the practice of image cataloguing

Melin, Carl-Marcus January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to provide in-depth knowledge by exploring how image cataloguing provides a context for expressions related to sex, gender, and queerness through metadata and textual descriptions within library databases. This thesis examines how normative conceptions related to sex, gender, and queerness affect the praxis of image cataloguing and how the material’s retrievability is influenced by these aspects. To examine how biases and preconceptions about sex, gender, and queerness are expressed through metadata and descriptive cataloguing the study focuses on catalogued portrait photographs, especially images portraying unknown individuals. The conclusions of this study are that descriptions of images portraying unknown individuals are heavily characterised by a binary view of sex and gender. Unknown individuals are categorised as women or men based on outer appearances, and not in a sex/gender neutral way. Since interpretations are based on clothing, hairstyles, accessories et cetera and not the naked body it may be argued that gender is being categorised, and not necessarily sex. If gender is to be understood as a social construction not attached to any specific physicality it may be expressed in any way by anyone. The assumption of being able to place people in sexed categories based merely on their appearances may therefore be questioned. A further conclusion is that queerness isn’t included when images are being catalogued. The study however shows that heteronormative assumptions may be traced in the way images are described. It may also be concluded that describing portrait photographs mainly through aspects related to sex/gender ignores other informative aspects of them as images, making them less retrievable for users. This is a two years master's thesis in library and information science.

Linked Data and Libraries : How the Switch to Linked Data Has Affected Work Practices at the National Library of Sweden

Unterstrasser, Julia January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores how library practice has been impacted by linked (open) data. For libraries, adopting linked data principles means moving away from the long-established reality of MARC-formats and opening up their information resources to the internet. While the transformation of library systems to linked data is often described as the necessary next step for the library community promising enormous benefits, the reality of the transformation process is a challenging one. This thesis employs an interview study at the National Library of Sweden, the first national library worldwide that has adopted linked data as its core data-model, to provide deeper insights into how linked data is affecting the current work practices of library professionals from their own perspectives. The findings suggest that linked data is significantly impacting library practice in a multitude of ways, fundamentally changing knowledge and information organization in the digital age. While linked data is still in the beginning stages of its implementation in the library community as a whole, the interviewed library professionals are confident about the benefits the transformation will bring eventually. While there are still many challenges and obstacles to tackle there is a strong believe that the advertised promises of linked data will come true in time. Furthermore, the results of the study suggest that linked data is only part of a paradigm-shifting change currently happening in the knowledge and information organization community, accompanied by many other developments that are as a whole fundamentally changing how information is organized, managed, shared and even perceived in today’s digital information environment of the internet.

Improving Search Ranking Using a Composite Scoring Approach

Snedden, Larry D 01 January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, the improvement to relevance in computerized search results is studied. Information search tools return ranked lists of documents ordered by the relevance of the documents to the user supplied search. Using a small number of words and phrases to represent complex ideas and concepts causes user search queries to be information sparse. This sparsity challenges search tools to locate relevant documents for users. A review of the challenges to information searches helps to identify the problems and offer suggestions in improving current information search tools. Using the suggestions put forth by the Strategic Workshop on Information Retrieval in Lorne (SWIRL), a composite scoring approach (Composite Scorer) is developed. The Composite Scorer considers various aspects of information needs to improve the ranked results of search by returning records relevant to the user’s information need. The Florida Fusion Center (FFC), a local law enforcement agency has a need for a more effective information search tool. Daily, the agency processes large amounts of police reports typically written as text documents. Current information search methods require inordinate amounts of time and skill to identify relevant police reports from their large collection of police reports. An experiment conducted by FFC investigators contrasted the composite scoring approach against a common search scoring approach (TF/IDF). In the experiment, police investigators used a custom-built software interface to conduct several use case scenarios for searching for related documents to various criminal investigations. Those expert users then evaluated the results of the top ten ranked documents returned from both search scorers to measure the relevance to the user of the returned documents. The evaluations were collected and measurements used to evaluate the performance of the two scorers. A search with many irrelevant documents has a cost to the users in both time and potentially in unsolved crimes. A cost function contrasted the difference in cost between the two scoring methods for the use cases. Mean Average Precision (MAP) is a common method used to evaluate the performance of ranked list search results. MAP was computed for both scoring methods to provide a numeric value representing the accuracy of each scorer at returning relevant documents in the top-ten documents of a ranked list of search results. The purpose of this study is to determine if a composite scoring approach to ranked lists, that considers multiple aspects of a user’s search, can improve the quality of search, returning greater numbers of relevant documents during an information search. This research contributes to the understanding of composite scoring methods to improve search results. Understanding the value of composite scoring methods allows researchers to evaluate, explore and possibly extend the approach, incorporating other information aspects such as word and document meaning.

Assim, foi inovador e ousado, sem ser contestador ou revoltado / Abstract: The painter Eliseu d'Angelo Visconti (Salerno, Italy, 1866 - Rio de Janeiro, 1944), despite being a precursor of modernism in Brazil, and a pioneer of design in Brazil, and decorator of several important buildings in Rio de Janeiro, his work is neither known nor appreciated in full measure, as happens to most Brazilian artists. The systematic cataloguing of the work of an artist is the procedure that aims to remedy those deficiencies and prevent and combat counterfeiting, which progresses to the extent that the market for visual arts in Brazil is incipient and knowledge of its object is poor. Then it was made a survey of oil paintings attributed to Visconti, a clipping that excludes all of its production design, paintings in other techniques, artistic projects for industries and large decorative panels. To set the stage for authentication of each painting and arrange them chronologically, we performed a large collection of documents and reviews published during the many exhibitions that Visconti participated. In addition, the author's individual characteristics - in terms of color, making, design and composition - seen in his works of authorship verified, once evident in other paintings, are the basis for its approval. Thus, there were 501 outstanding oil paintings, mostly verified and approved, in an Iconographic and Chronological List and, accompanied by their essential data and history; a symbol of characterization of the work, that sets in five variables: author, title, image, date and collection. Separately, more than 115 paintings are displayed, still in studies or non approved and accompanied by the same elements. Visconti reached a personal visual language harmonizing elements of their academic training with the trends of the late nineteenth century: pre-Raphaelitism, impressionism, symbolism, art nouveau. Thus, it was innovative and daring, without being disruptive or revolted / Doutorado / Historia da Arte / Doutor em História

Authority control in an academic library consortium using a union catalogue maintained by a central office for authority control

Marais, Hester, 1961- 31 March 2004 (has links)
Authority control is the backbone of the library catalogue and therefore a critical library activity. Experienced staff create authority records to assist users in their quest for information. The focus of this study is on authority control as a means of co-operation in academic library consortia using a union catalogue maintained by a Central Office for Authority Control. Literature studies were conducted on three sub-problems: the development of academic library consortia in South Africa, and various forms, characteristics and functions of academic library consortia in general; the characteristics, principals and objectives of authority control; and the functions of union catalogues with special reference to the role of Z39.50 within virtual union catalogues. The conclusion was that existing and new authority records should be made available as widely as possible within consortia through a union catalogue. It is however a partial solution, because not all the libraries within the consortium have the expertise to create new authority records. Two empirical studies were conducted. A cost analysis was done to determine the cost of creating and changing authority records within academic library consortia in South Africa, in order to choose a system within which authority control can be performed effectively and speedily. Secondly, a questionnaire was sent to libraries in the United States to gather information on their experiences with regard to authority control, library co-operation in general, and virtual union catalogues. The United States was the natural choice because it could be regarded as the birthplace of modern library consortia. Inferences drawn from the information received was used to develop the structure and functions for a Central Office for Authority Control in academic library consortia in South Africa. It was found that authority control within an academic library consortium using a union catalogue could be conducted most cost-effectively and timeously through such a Central Office for Authority Control. The purpose of the Central Office would be to co-ordinate authority control within the consortium. Pooling available resources within the consortium would keep the cost of authority control as low as possible. Libraries with the required infrastructure and expertise would have the opportunity to create authority records on behalf of other libraries and be compensated for their services. Through such a Central Office more authority records created according to mutually accepted standards would be available for sharing within the consortium. / Information Science / D.Litt. et Phil. Information was collected by the following means: an extensive literature survey, interviews with archivists in both state and private archives and an empirical survey by means of a questionnaire distributed amongst mainly serious historical resea rchers. The researcher personally examined archival finding aids such as inventories, guides and indexes, as well as the computerised archival database, for firsthand knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of these research aids. It was found that technological developments had changed the nature of archives and archival sources, the most important adjustment being to electronic information sources and oral history archives. The impact of computer networks on the archival milieu, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of dealing with electronic archival records and oral history archives, was subsequently discussed in detail. Although the organisation and description of archival source material are still based on the principles of provenance and original order, certain adaptations are necessary. Without these processes no access to archival sources is possible. Effective archival information retrieval can only be achieved if sufficient funds are made available and well-trained, experienced staff are appointed. Subsequently the changing nature of historical research, especially with regard to the choice of research topics, was discussed. Modern tendencies such as history from below, or the history of everyday life, and the history of women, were investigated, in opposition to traditional historical emphasis on important political figures and happenings. Research further showed that accessibility to archival information sources is of paramount importance to the historical researcher. The important role of the archivist and archival finding aids, is emphasised. During the empirical phase the answers of respondents about their visits to archives were analysed. The experiences of historical researchers with regard to archival finding aids, computerised archival networks, and reading room staff, are discussed.
