Brexit - The Waiting Game : A qualitative case study about how Swedish forestry firms perceive and respond to the uncertainty regarding Brexit

Ek, Jennie, Persson, Robin January 2019 (has links)
Brexit is the source of changes in the business environment in Europe. The situation generates uncertainty in which direction the United Kingdom wants to take on the decision of leaving the European Union. The situation is unique, the outcome and impact are unknown. The aim of the thesis is to gain profound knowledge and analyze how Swedish forestry industry firms perceive and respond to the uncertainty of Brexit. The reviewed literature present how uncertain business environments affect firms, the perception of uncertainty and strategy that generates a response to uncertainty. The conceptual framework illustrates the process and the connection between the elements. In order to gain profound knowledge on the subject, a qualitative study with an abductive approach was conducted. The applied research design was a multiple-case study that consisted of six cases. The analysis discusses the empirical data with a cross-case examination and pattern matching to the literature in order to identify similarities and differences between the cases. The perceived uncertainty is dependent on several elements and the findings display how changes in the business environment impact firms differently depending on the risk management of the firm, market commitment, information, experience and how the market is valued. These factors influence the process behind the response and the resources that are allocated to the process. The thesis contributes both to the theoretical and practical understanding of uncertainty and how to respond to uncertainty.

Alteração dos fatos no curso do processo e os limites de modificação da causa petendi / Amendment of facts during the course of action and the limits to change the cause of action

Degenszajn, Daniel Raichelis 13 May 2010 (has links)
Avoiding time to act as a corrosion agent of rights during the long period of a pending case must be a true obsession for the modern expert in civil procedure, conscious of the purpose and existence of procedural science that constitutes its object of study. The teleological vision of the judicial process as an instrument of realization of substantive law shall be present in the interpretation of all procedural rules, always keeping Chestertons wise advice in mind, to whom a man can see further if he climbs on the shoulders of those who came before. Breaking with old dogmas to provide solutions to new problems is to make procedural law dynamic, giving it the capability to overcome crises of effectiveness. The change of events during the long journey of the case is the object of this study, particularly with regard to the impacts on important procedural figures and institutions such as cause of action, stabilization of claim, rigidity of the preclusive system, inertia of jurisdiction and its interpretation, present in the constitutional principles of adversary system and reasonable time of proceedings, which form the broad concept of due process of law. To achieve such aims, this dissertation is structured in five parts. The access to the fair legal system is the opening theme and the first chapter focuses on its study. Access to justice should not be confused with being at court. Its real meaning is related to the implementation of the constitutional promise of delivery of legal protection to those who are actually entitled to it, always remembering that it must be fair, equitable and timely. The second chapter, the core of the theoretical object of this study, focuses on the identification of the litigation and its objective elements and seeks to demonstrate the existence of a plurality of possibilities for the investigation of the same problem. The German conception of the subject matter (or litigious matter) analyzes the 194 problem in a completely different manner from that designed by the Italian Law (theory of the three eadem). The effect given by the theories of substantiation and individualization for the identification of the resistant core of the cause of action demonstrate the necessity of analyzing the elements of claim, in response to the substantive law that seeks to be enforced in court. The self-determined and heterodetermined rights claim the use of different methods to identify the causa petendi demostrating that this legal concept hás certain elasticity. The third chapter develops the concept of supervening fact and supervening knowledge of the fact as well as their different impact on the legal sphere of the plaintiff and the defendant; the last moment of the proceedings that permits the introduction of the new fact is analyzed and, especially, the actual scope of article 462 of the Code of Civil Procedure. The interpretation of this procedural provision reveals a remarkable range of powerful utility for improving the legal process as a state method of settlement. The fourth chapter discusses the limits to change the cause of action during the course of action overcoming the dogma of the stabilization of claim. The nonlevy or non-application of purely formal procedural rules to give effect to the constitutional principles which inform the due process of law is the cornerstone of the conclusion reached at the end of the work. The fifth chapter concludes the undertaken analytical path and presents the understanding stage of the object of this study. Being the adversary system and full defense guaranteed, the constitutional principle of reasonable time of proceedings must be considered. Its correct interpretation is to acquire a guarantee of full resolution of the crisis of substantive law with the lowest degree of social disruption as possible, i.e., the lowest expenditure of energy and time, which means recognizing the possibility of changing the causa petendi.

Resposta dos componentes da Síndrome metabólica a programa de mudança do estilo de vida em adultos / Metabolic syndrome and components after a lifestyle changing program in free-living adults

Burini, Franz Homero Paganini 05 May 2011 (has links)
Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors as abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension and atherogenic lipid profile, having an enormous economic impact on the national health system. There is no curative model for the MS, being the primary prevention, such as the combat of sedentary behavior and food intake inadequacy the aim of the primary care system. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a lifestyle changing program (LFCP) on MS components in free-living adults. 131 individuais (55 ± 9 years, 74% females and 68,7% under 60 years of age) were submitted to the program, characterized by supervised aerobic exercise (65-80% V02max.) for 80 minutes per session, 3-5 times per week, additionally to monthly dietary counseling. The program lasted 6 months, involving clinic evaluations followed by anthropometric, nutritional and biochemistry, along with a maximal cardiorespiratory fitness test on a treadmill (Balke protocol), at baseline and at end (6 months). MS diagnosis was made according to ATP III - NCEP (2003), being the glycemic index altered as suggested (AHA, 2005). All results were analyzed with Statistic Software, with Student t test and Wilcoxon, when properly, being 5% the statistical level of significance (p<0,05). At baseline, MS prevalence was 50,3%, being elevated waist circumference the most prevalent component (63,4%). MS patients (G1) were different from non MS patients for higher BMI, high levels of uric acid and lower cardiorespiratory fitness. LFCP resulted in higher scores of health eating index (HEI) and dietary fiber intake, and lowered the caloric iintake. Additionaly, it improved the cardiorespiratory fitness and lowered C reactive protein (CRP-hs), γ-glutamil transpeptidase (γ-GT) and uric acid. MS prevalence dropped 6,8%, resulted from a reduction in waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure, and an increase in HDL-c levels. MS diagnosis after the program were due glycemic, tryclicerides and uric acid elevation, followed by reduction in fiber intake during the 6 months period. Datas presented in this study evidence patients characteristics with and without improvements with LFCP focusing MS prevention and treatment.

Impacto das atividades produtivas na dinâmica da paisagem do assentamento Matupi, estado do Amazonas / Impact of Productive Activities in Landscape Dynamics Matupi Settlement, State of Amazonas

Silva, Viviane Vidal da 20 September 2012 (has links)
Causes related to the deforestation in the Amazon region are linked to different uses and occupations of this area, including rural settlements implemented by Incra. Thus, through a local-scale study, the objective of this research was to investigate which are the social, economic and institutional influences on land use and deforestation in Matupi Settlement Project, in the municipality of Manicoré, in the southern region of the state of Amazonas. For the assessment of changes in land use and deforestation, information generated by PRODES / INPE, in the period 2000-2010, were used. The social-economic characteristics were obtained from the application of 121 questionnaires with those responsible for the lot in the Matupi settlement. We used the Multivariate Regression Model (MRM) to select the variables social, institutional and economic factors (independent variables) that explain land use and deforestation (dependent variable) in PA Matupi. The analysis showed that the conversion of forest land to use has increased in Matupi PA and for 121 respondents, 90.9% use more than 20% of the lot, especially with the activity of livestock. Of the 28 independent variables, only the current activity in the lot, technical assistance, use of equipment and machinery, responsible for the lot, place of residence before arriving at the settlement, origin of the responsible for the plot, and marketing of products and marketed products have been selected to explain the land use and deforestation in the area. Thus, local studies integrating social, economic and institutional factors are needed to assess the real contribution of the INCRA settlement projects in the deforestation of the region, contributing to the planning of new settlements in the region, aimed at the social, economic and environmental development.

Bazart, Loïc 07 July 2014 (has links)
Most of time a system is characterized by few operating modes, each of them could be describe by a model. In the case of the commutation between each operating mode is due to unknown process (fault, changing in condition,) it could be difficult to operate with this system and used the appropriate commands. With a partially supervised system (knowing of number of operating mode and model structure that represent each mode), a method is developed to detect the active operating mode at each time. Indeed, the analyses of the residual gradient, that obtain by product each local model together, permit to characterize the operating mode. Application of this method is presented with simulated data and industrial data of continuous casting to detect a particular phenomenon: the sticker. Finally, a rejection mode method is used on industrial thermal data in the same aim (detection of stickers in continuous casting)

Creating a man, a mouse or a monster? : masculinity as formulated by Syrian female novelists through the second half of the 20th century

Berg, Lovisa Ulrika January 2017 (has links)
This literary study examines the formulation of masculinity in Syrian novels authored by women. The thesis covers the period between 1959 and 2000, corresponding to both the development of the female-authored novel in Syria and the creation of the modern Syrian state. This research engages with studies of masculinity in general and literary masculinity studies in particular. Drawing on the seminal work of Raewyn Connell as well as engaging with studies on masculinity and feminine narratology in Swedish, English and Arabic, the thesis analyses the formulation of literary masculinity through the fictional societies’ ideal masculinity on the one hand, and the female characters’ views and reactions to masculinity on the other. From a general survey of the field, 34 novels undertaking the formulation of gendered relations were identified and chosen for this study. From this selection, five themes emerged, forming the foundation of this thesis’ main chapters. The five themes explore, in turn, how stereotypes are utilised to critique gender roles, ways in which male and female characters collaborate to formulate gender norms, how female characters capitalise on patriarchy in order to enhance their lives, male characters as symbols for social and political change and finally, the difficulties included in the performance of masculinity. Each theme is exemplified through one novel, which is analysed in detail. Throughout the five chapters, the main novel chosen for analysis is put into conversation with other novels with similar themes but from different decades. This allows for an examination of changing ideals of masculinity in addition to the theme itself. The first theme, how stereotypes are utilised to critique gender roles, is studied through a close reading of al-Ẓahr al-‘ārī (The Naked back) by Hanrīyit ‘Abbūdī. The analysis illustrates how the expected normative behaviour of men and women is utilised in order to comment on the formulation of gender roles. The chapter further demonstrates ways in which what is seen as gender specific behaviour can be appropriated by the opposite gender. This is further developed through the examination of female writers taking over the male voice through a first person male narrator. The second theme, ways in which male and female characters collaborate to formulate gender norms, is discussed through a close reading of the novel Khaṭawāt fī al-ḍabāb (Steps in the fog) by Malāḥa al-Khānī. This chapter illustrates the similar expectations that both male and female characters have on their sons and fellow male characters. This includes taking on the role of provider and protector, even in the cases where the female characters are able to look after themselves. The third theme, how female characters capitalise on patriarchy in order to enhance their lives, is elaborated through a close reading of Ayyām ma‘ahu (Days with him) by Kūlīt Khūrī. This theme demonstrates how the female character constructs herself and her world around the idea of a perfect male, whom she thinks will save her. The analysis examines what is seen as ideal traits in a man. It further discusses the change of the female character and how her initial utilisation of patriarchal structure transforms into a critique of the same structure. The fourth theme, male characters as symbols for social and political change, is seen through a close reading of Dimashq yā basmat al-ḥuzn (Damascus, o smile of sadness) by Ulfat al-Idlibī. The chapter connects between changing social ideals and ideal masculinity. Through Bayrūt 75 (Beirut 75) by Ghāda al-Sammān, the fifth theme, the difficulties included in the performance of masculinity, is studied. The problematic masculinity presented is then put in contrast with what appears to be a suggestion that a performance of femininity could be an alternative to unsuccessful masculinity. Whereas the novels differ in their presentation of masculinity and the utilisation of ideal masculinity, they agree on a set of core traits summarised in a hegemonic ideal of masculinity as an ability to provide and protect. The ways in which this should be performed is however closely connected to the female characters’ ideas of emancipation and women’s rights. The female writers’ formulation of masculinity can hence be said to mirror the development of the female characters and their awareness of women’s rights. The thesis hopes that its original contribution to knowledge is the identification and examination of constructed masculinities in Syrian female-authored fiction. Moreover, this thesis studies a body of Syrian fiction previously largely unstudied in Western academia, and in a framework of Swedish, English and Arabic secondary sources.

Dynamique de combustion des végétaux et analyse des fumées émises, effets de l’échelle et du système / Plant combustion dynamics and analysis of fumes emitted, scale effects and system

Romagnoli, Elodie 11 December 2014 (has links)
Wildfires are characterized by a lot of scales of time and space. A multi-physics and multi-scale approach is required to consider the complexity of these phenomena. This thesis is an experimental contribution to the study of the scale effects and the effects of the system on the combustion dynamics of forest fuels and smoke emission. The aim of this work was to determine which experimental protocols and specifically which scales can be used to characterize the combustion of vegetal fuels in the laboratory. The reaction to fire of pine needles species representative of the Mediterranean ecosystem, (Pinus pinaster and Pinus laricio) has been studied. Litters of pine needles are an important issue because they sustain fire spread and are involved in the transition from a surface fire to a total fire.Three experimental configurations were studied in this thesis: the cone calorimeter scale; the large scale calorimeter or LSHR (allowing static combustion with larger masses than used with the cone); a fire spread in the LSHR, allowing to study the effect of the system on the dynamics of combustion and release of smoke. To compare these configurations, experimental protocols have been elaborated while keeping the same fuel load. Different parameters were studied to analyze the combustion dynamics such as combustion efficiency, heat released rate and mass loss rate. Smoke production was studied by measuring the coefficient of extinction to characterize their opacity and an estimation of the soot emission factor was derived. The emission factors of the main compounds emitted during the combustion of these two pines needles were measured with a Fourier Transform Infrared analyzer and a Non-dispersive infrared analyzer. Analysis by gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector and a mass spectrometer allowed us to complete these measurements. A mass balance of carbon was also performed to quantify the total carbon measured through our analyzes. The main contributions of our work can be summarized as follow: the study of the burning of Pinus pinaster needles reveals significant differences for heat release rate (HRR) at both cone calorimeter and LSHR scales. However, the combustion system (fire spread) does not influence the HRR value at the LSHR scale. The combustion efficiency appeared to be independent with regard to the scale and the system. We observed a wide influence on the rate of smoke release and the emission factor of soot. We also shown that the combustion system (fire spread) influences the dynamics and value of emissions factors of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide (major compound emitted for these combustions). An influence of the three experimental configurations on the emission factors of nitrogen compounds and VOC emissions was also noted. This difference was attributed to the level of smoke temperature. Finally, an effect of particles geometry was also pointed out by the comparison between the burnings performed with the cone calorimeter and the LSHR for both types of pine needles. The combustion dynamics of Pinus laricio needles was slighlty affected by changing scale in comparison to needles of Pinus pinaster (weak variation of HRR). We also observed that Pinus laricio’s needles, which are thermally thiner than Pinus pinaster ones have the lowest soot emission factor.

Biomass to energy: mass and exergy assessment of carbon mitigation and triple bottom line assessment / Biomassa para energia: avaliação de massa e exergia para mitigação de carbono e avaliação de sustentabilidade

Veiga, João Paulo Soto 12 September 2016 (has links)
Earth is exposed to an amount of energy that is fixed organically via photosynthesis and stored as fossil fuels, which are currently the major energy sources of humanity. Since Arrhenius concluded that carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels could lead to a climate warming, studies have sought ways to reduce human contribution on the environment to mitigate possible negative impacts on climate. The increasing world population is an obstacle for the efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases (GHG), because it demands more energy for transportation, electricity and heating. Among several renewable energy sources, biomass for fuels stands out, such as sugarcane ethanol in Brazil. Using biomass for fuels may help reducing the pressure on fossil fuels, besides, fixing organic carbon already emitted, contributing to mitigate problems of climate change and global warming. Thus, this study aims to analyse carbon cycles of mitigating emissions from fossil fuels with biofuel based on useful energy (exergy) content to determine the equivalent area required. Previous studies of life cycle assessment in sugarcane and eucalyptus were used to obtain carbon- and energy-flow data. These data were applied to estimate the available exergy to the final user through different routes of biofuel production, including current and evolving technologies. Exergy assessment demonstrated that on average, each Mg of biomass produced, led to a change of 3.02 GJ on sugarcane scenarios and 5.93 GJ on eucalyptus scenarios. Reducing sugarcane straw moisture from 50% to 30% increased the exergy output in 13.32 GJ ha-1, an increase of 0.67 GJ ha-1 for each 1% of moisture reduce. Eucalyptus to firewood, reducing moisture from 20% to 15% had an increase of 7.52 GJ ha-1 in the exergy output, representing 1.50 GJ ha-1 of increase for each 1%. This kind of assessment brings a new point of view in carbon mitigation, looking for its functionality. Biofuel use implications in environmental, social and economic aspects were also studied through a hybrid input-output life cycle assessment (IO-LCA) showing differences between the occupation of land use and two different ways of sugarcane production. The IO-LCA showed, in areas of land use change from pasture to sugarcane, energy consumption is increased by 3.7 times, employment is reduced by 5.4 times, and GHG emissions are reduced to only 2% of original emissions for each unit of R$ of final demand changed Most of the employment is generated by the sugarcane supply chain sector. Comparing sugarcane produced by the mills, it originates more direct full time jobs and probably in a more formal job market than sugarcane produced by farm suppliers. Farm suppliers use less energy and release less GHG than mills sugarcane production.

Modulação dos efeitos temporais da declaração de inconstitucionalidade: ponderação, subsunção e dosimetria / Changing of temporal effects judgment of unconstitutionality: balancing, subsumption and dosimetry.

Boccato, Esdras 03 May 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines the changing of temporal effects judgment of unconstitutionali-ty from the perspective of their application methods. Critically, it studies the adequacy of judicial guidance made by Supreme Court and defended by the prevailing brazilian doc-trine that chancing effects should be performed using the technique of balacing principles. In this way, this study presents the main methods mentioned in brazilian and foreign doc-trine for chancing effects, subdividing into balacing solutions and subsumption solutions. Moreover, taking assumption that invalidation of unconstitutional law is adjudication act of legal sanction, it analyzes commonalities between chancing effects and criminal dosimetry, because both can be considered dosage techniques of legal sanction.

Resposta dos componentes da Síndrome metabólica a programa de mudança do estilo de vida em adultos / Metabolic syndrome and components after a lifestyle changing program in free-living adults

Franz Homero Paganini Burini 05 May 2011 (has links)
