Genus definierar människors sociala kön och genomsyrar samhället genom de föreställningar, idéer och handlingar som förknippas med män respektive kvinnor. Uppfattningar av genus skapas och upprätthålls av genussystem som är konstruerat för att producera stereotyper. Nuförtiden finns det dock fler kön än de stereotypa, vilket bör beaktas vid design. Ändå tillämpas könsstereotyper idag inom alla designområden, vilket innebär att de också påverkar den visuella designen av grafiska användargränssnitt. Visuell design av användargränssnitt och upplevelser är viktiga delar av området interaktionsdesign och därför är syftet med kandidatuppsatsens forskning var att utforska stereotyp könskodning i visuell design av användargränssnitt, och hur detta påverkar användarnas upplevelse. De estetiska designattribut som forskningsstudien undersökte närmare i relation till användarnas upplevelse var färg, typografi och bilder. För detta genomfördes en kvalitativ studie där data samlades in genom individuella semistrukturerade intervjuer från tre målinriktat utvalda designers och en fokusgruppsdiskussion med tre målinriktat utvalda användare. Den insamlade informationen analyserades tematiskt för att generera fyra teman. Dessa fyra teman representerar forskningsresultaten, som diskuterades med hjälp av relevant litteratur, inklusive självbestämmandeteorin. Resultaten visar att informanternas upplevelse påverkas av stereotyp könskodning av färg, typsnitt och bildspråk i designen av grafiska användargränssnitt genom att de först identifierar design som antingen stereotypiskt feminint eller maskulint könskodad. Informanterna reagerar både positivt och negativt på den stereotypiskt könskodade designen på olika sätt. De upplever och vittnar också om att den stereotypiskt könskodade designen bidrar till utanförskap och exkludering av kvinnor, män och andra marginaliserade kön. Resultaten indikerar att användares upplevelser av och inställningar till stereotypiskt könskodade användargränssnitt är övervägande negativa och därmed kan det påstås att visuell design av användargränssnitt generellt sett gynnas av att hållas könsneutral. Resultatet av denna kandidatuppsats bidrar teoretiskt genom tillföra ett kvalitativt perspektiv i genusforskningen på forskningsområdena interaktionsdesign och människa-datorinteraktion som i dagsläget saknar både bredd och djup. Studien bidrar också praktiskt med information om användares designpreferenser som kan nyttjas av bland annat designers, utvecklare och andra intressenter. / Gender defines the social sex of humans and permeates society through the conceptions, ideas and actions associated with men and women respectively. Perceptions of gender are created and maintained by gender systems, which are designed to produce stereotypes. Nowadays, however, more genders than the stereotypical exists, which should be taken into consideration when designing. Still, until today, gender stereotypes such as boys liking blue and girls liking pink are applied throughout all design fields, which means they also affect the visual design of graphic user interfaces. Visual design of user interfaces and experience are important parts of the interaction design field. Therefore, the purpose of this bachelor’s thesis was to explore stereotypically gendered design in the visual design of user interfaces, and how this affects the users' experience. The aesthetic design attributes that the research study examined in more detail in relation to the users' experience were color, typography, and images For this, a qualitative study was conducted, where data was collected through individual semi-structured interviews from three purposively selected designers and a focus group discussion with three purposively selected users. The collected data was analyzed thematically to conclude to four themes. These four themes represent the research findings, which were discussed with the help of relevant literature, including the theory of Self Determination. The research findings show that the informants’ experiences are influenced by stereotypically gendered color, typography and imagery in the design of graphical user interfaces by, first of all, identifying designs as either stereotypically femininely or masculine gendered. The informants react both positively and negatively to the stereotypically gendered design in various different ways. They also experience and testify that the stereotypically gender-coded design contributes to the exclusion of women, men and other marginalized genders. The research findings indicate that users' experiences of and attitudes towards stereotypically gendered user interfaces are predominantly negative and, thus, it can be argued that visual design of user interfaces generally benefits from being gender neutral. The outcome of this bachelor's thesis research contributes theoretically by adding a qualitative perspective into gender research in the research areas of interaction design and human-computer interaction, which currently lacks both breadth and depth. The study also provides practical information on users' design preferences that can be used by designers and developers, among other interested stakeholders.

Advanced Coded Modulation for High Speed Optical TransmissionLiu, Tao January 2016 (has links)
In the recent years, the exponential Internet traffic growth projections place enormous transmission rate demand on the underlying information infrastructure at every level, from the long haul submarine transmission to optical metro networks. In recent years, optical transmission at 100 Gb/s Ethernet date rate has been standardized by ITU-T and IEEE forums and 400Gb/s and 1Tb/s rates per DWDM channel systems has been under intensive investigation which are expected to be standardized within next couple of years.To facilitate the implementation of 400GbE and 1TbE technologies, the new advanced modulation scheme combined with advanced forward error correction code should be proposed. Instead of using traditional QAM, we prefer to use some other modulation techniques, which are more suitable for current coherent optical transmission systems and can also deal with the channel impairments. In this dissertation, we target at improving the channel capacity by designing the new modulation formats. For the first part of the dissertation, we first describe the optimal signal constellation design algorithm (OSCD), which is designed by placing constellation points onto a two dimensional space. Then, we expand the OSCD onto multidimensional space and design its corresponding mapping rule. At last, we also develop the OSCD algorithm for different channel scenario in order to make the constellation more tolerant to different channel impairments. We propose the LLR-OSCD for linear phase noise dominated channel and NL-OSCD for nonlinear phase noise dominated channel including both self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) cases. For the second part of the dissertation, we target at probability shaping of the constellation sets (non-uniform signaling). In the conventional data transmission schemes, the probability of each point in a given constellation is transmitted equally likely and the number of constellation sets is set to 2!. If the points with low energy are transmitted with larger probability then the others with large energy, the non- uniform scheme can achieve higher energy efficiency. Meanwhile, this scheme may be more suitable for optical communication because the transmitted points with large probabilities, which have small energy, suffer less nonlinearity. Both the Monte Carlo simulations and experiment demonstration of both OSCD and non-uniform signaling schemes indicate that our proposed signal constellation significantly outperforms QAM, IPQ, and sphere-packing based signal constellations.

Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In recent years Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have become interesting for harbor mapping and protection. AUVs require a SONAR sensor for observing their surroundings, thus enabling them to perform collision avoidance manoeuvres and scanning their operating environment for intruders or foreign objects, e.g. mines.
To perform such actions the SONAR sensor is required to supply very fine range resolution for target imaging, as well as providing information about possible target velocity.
Basic SONAR theory is discussed, as well as different approaches to signal design and processing techniques, for achieving the required resolution in range and target velocity. Two of the discussed approaches are selected for processing range and target velocity, respectively.
Both approaches are simulated for their validity before being tested by using a custom-built platform. The platform is highly configurable and designed for capacity of testing a variety of SONAR signals and set ups. Furthermore, the platform is built by using off-the-shelf components to minimize development costs.
The results of simulations and practical tests are presented. A high correlation between theory and practice is achieved.
The knowledge and the platform presented form the stepping stone for further SONAR sensor developments. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In die laaste jare het outonome onderwater voertuie (OOV) toenemend belangrik geword vir die kartografie en beskerming van hawens. OOV’s vereis SONAR sensore wat hulle in staat stel, om hulle omgewing waar te neem en sodoende botsing vermydings take te verrig en ook om hul werksomgewing noukeurig te skandeer om indringers of vreemde voorwerpe, bv. myne, op te spoor.
Om sulke werk te verrig, word van die SONAR sensor vereis, om baie fyn afstand oplossings vir teiken te verskaf, insluitend die moontlike snelheid van die teiken.
Basiese SONAR teorie word bespreek, en dan verskeie benaderings van sein ontwerp en verwerkings tegnieke. Twee van die bespreekte benaderings word gekies om afstand en teiken snelheid onderskeidelik te verwerk.
Altwee benaderings word gesimuleer om hul geldigheid vas te stel, voor dat hulle getoets word op ’n pasmaat vervaardigde platform. Die platform is hoogs aanpasbaar en is ontwerp vir sy vermoë om ’n verskeidenheid SONAR seine en verwerkings te hanteer. Verder is die platform vervaardig met standard rakonderdele om ontwikkelingskoste so laag as moontlik te hou.
Die uitslae van die simulerings en praktiese toetse word voorgestel. ’n Hoë mate aan korrelasie is bereik tussen teorie en praktyk.
Die kennis en die platvorm, wat hier voorgestel word, vorm die eerste trappie vir toekomstige SONAR sensor ontwikkeling.

Estimation of LRD present in H.264 video traces using wavelet analysis and proving the paramount of H.264 using OPF technique in wi-fi environmentJayaseelan, John January 2012 (has links)
While there has always been a tremendous demand for streaming video over Wireless networks, the nature of the application still presents some challenging issues. These applications that transmit coded video sequence data over best-effort networks like the Internet, the application must cope with the changing network behaviour; especially, the source encoder rate should be controlled based on feedback from a channel estimator that explores the network intermittently. The arrival of powerful video compression techniques such as H.264, which advance in networking and telecommunications, opened up a whole new frontier for multimedia communications. The aim of this research is to transmit the H.264 coded video frames in the wireless network with maximum reliability and in a very efficient manner. When the H.264 encoded video sequences are to be transmitted through wireless network, it faces major difficulties in reaching the destination. The characteristics of H.264 video coded sequences are studied fully and their capability of transmitting in wireless networks are examined and a new approach called Optimal Packet Fragmentation (OPF) is framed and the H.264 coded sequences are tested in the wireless simulated environment. This research has three major studies involved in it. First part of the research has the study about Long Range Dependence (LRD) and the ways by which the self-similarity can be estimated. For estimating the LRD a few studies are carried out and Wavelet-based estimator is selected for the research because Wavelets incarcerate both time and frequency features in the data and regularly provides a more affluent picture than the classical Fourier analysis. The Wavelet used to estimate the self-similarity by using the variable called Hurst Parameter. Hurst Parameter tells the researcher about how a data can behave inside the transmitted network. This Hurst Parameter should be calculated for a more reliable transmission in the wireless network. The second part of the research deals with MPEG-4 and H.264 encoder. The study is carried out to prove which encoder is superior to the other. We need to know which encoder can provide excellent Quality of Service (QoS) and reliability. This study proves with the help of Hurst parameter that H.264 is superior to MPEG-4. The third part of the study is the vital part in this research; it deals with the H.264 video coded frames that are segmented into optimal packet size in the MAC Layer for an efficient and more reliable transfer in the wireless network. Finally the H.264 encoded video frames incorporated with the Optimal Packet Fragmentation are tested in the NS-2 wireless simulated network. The research proves the superiority of H.264 video encoder and OPF's master class.

Avaliação da frequência e gravidade da estenose arterial intracraniana em pacientes com isquemia cerebral aguda através da ultrassonografia transcraniana colorida e angiotomografia de crânio / Transcranial Color Coded Sonography and CT-angiography to assess the frequency and severity of intracranial stenosis in patients with Acute Cerebral IschemiaRocha, Letícia Januzi de Almeida 03 February 2016 (has links)
Introdução: A doença aterosclerótica intracraniana é uma das principais causas de acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico (AVCI) no mundo, porém sua prevalência parece estar subestimada na população brasileira pela carência de estudos na área. O objetivo principal deste estudo foi descrever a frequência e gravidade da estenose intracraniana nos pacientes com AVCI ou ataque isquêmico transitório (AIT), utilizando a ultrassonografia transcraniana colorida (UTC). O objetivo secundário foi correlacionar os achados deste exame com a angiotomografia de crânio (AngioTC). Métodos: estudo observacional e prospectivo, onde foram avaliados pacientes consecutivos com o diagnóstico de AVCI ou AIT admitidos no período de fevereiro de 2014 a dezembro de 2014. A avaliação inicial consistiu na coleta de dados demográficos, epidemiológicos e clínicos e em seguida os pacientes foram submetidos ao exame de UTC através das janelas transtemporais e suboccipital, com o intuito de avaliar a presença de estenose intracraniana. Estenose intracraniana foi graduada em moderada (50- 70%), grave (70-99%) e suboclusão/oclusão (>= 99%). Foram considerados sintomáticos os casos em que houve uma associação entre os novos sinais e sintomas e uma nova área de infarto ao exame de neuroimagem no território da artéria envolvida ou quando o quadro neurológico correspondeu ao território da artéria envolvida. Os pacientes que possuíam UTC e AngioTC em sua avaliação foram comparados de forma cega quanto ao grau de estenose intracraniana seguindo a mesma classificação. Resultados: Foram avaliados 271 pacientes com o diagnóstico de AVCI ou AIT agudos (149 homens, com média de idade de 65,8 ± 12,5), 263 (97%) foram submetidos a exame de circulação intracraniana, sendo a ultrassonografia transcraniana colorida realizada em 168 casos (61,9%). Apenas 25 indivíduos (14,9%) foram excluídos devido a janela transtemporal insuficiente. Dentre os 143 pacientes que puderam ser avaliados adequadamente pela ultrassonografia transcraniana, a prevalência de estenose arterial intracraniana foi de 38,5% (55 casos); sendo sintomática em 25,2% dos casos. A média de idade dos pacientes era de 64 ± 11 anos, 26,9 % eram brancos e 29,4% hipertensos. Os pacientes com estenose intracraniana apresentaram maior pontuação na escala do NIH: 10 (IQ 4 - 19) vs 6 (IQ 3 - 13), maiores níveis de pressão arterial sistólica na admissão: 160 (IQ 145-170) vs 140 (IQ 130 - 155) e menores taxas de HDL: 32 (IQ 27 - 39) vs 36 (IQ 30 - 45). Após análise multivariada, o fator de risco independentemente associado à estenose intracraniana foi a hipertesão arterial sistêmica na admissão (p=0,006). Nos 100 pacientes com ambos os exames, a sensibilidade, especificidade, valor preditivo positivo e valor preditivo negativo da UTC comparada a AngioTC para detecção de estenoses intracranianas moderadas-graves foi de 60%, 73%, 73% e 60%, respectivamente. Conclusões: Encontramos alta frequência de estenose arterial intracraniana entre os pacientes com AVCI agudo e AIT na nossa população, especialmente entre indivíduos portadores de hipertensão arterial sistêmica. A UTC é uma ferramenta não-invasiva que pode ser utilizada para investigação da doença moderada-grave com acurácia moderada quando comparada a AngioTC / Background: Intracranial atherosclerotic disease is a major cause of ischemic stroke in the world, but its prevalence seems to be underestimated in our population by the lack of studies in the area. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency and severity of intracranial stenosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA), using the transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS). The secondary objective was to correlate the TCCS test results with the findings on CT angiography on the same patients. Methods: Prospective observational study that evaluated consecutive patients admitted with a diagnosis of ischemic stroke or TIA during the period February 2014 to December 2014. The initial evaluation consisted of collection of demographic, epidemiological and clinical data and then the patients underwent the examination TCCS through transtemporal and suboccipital windows, in order to assess the presence of intracranial stenosis. Intracranial stenosis was graded moderate (50-70%), severe (70-99%) and subocclusion/occlusion (>= 99%). The cases were considered symptomatic when there was an association between new symptoms and signs and a new infarct area on neuroimaging in the territory of the stenotic artery or when the neurological status corresponded to the territory of that artery. Patients who had TCCS and intracranial angiography in their assessment were blindly compared for the degree of intracranial stenosis following the same classification. Results: We evaluated 271 patients with diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke and TIA (149 men, mean age 65.8 ± 12.5), 263 (97%) underwent examination of intracranial circulation, with the TCCS held in 168 cases (61.9%). Only 25 individuals (14.9%) were excluded due to insufficient transtemporal window. Among the 143 patients who could be evaluated properly by transcranial ultrasound, the prevalence of intracranial arterial stenosis was 38.5% (55 cases); with 25,2% symptomatic cases. The average age of patients was 64 ± 11 years, 26.9% were white and 29.4% hypertensive. Patients with intracranial stenosis had higher scores on the NIHSS: 10 (IR 4-19) vs 6 (IR 3- 13), higher levels of systolic blood pressure at entry: 160 (IR 145-170) vs 140 (IR 130 - 155) and lower HDL rates: 32 (IR 27-39) vs 36 (IR 30-45). After multivariate analysis, the risk factor independently associated with intracranial stenosis was systemic arterial hypertension at admission (p = 0.006). In the 83 patients with both tests, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of TCCS compared to CT angiography for detection of intracranial stenosis moderate-severe was 60%, 73%, 73% e 60%, respectively, Conclusions: We found a high frequency of intracranial artery stenosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke and TIA in our population, especially among individuals with hypertension. TCCS is a non-invasive tool that can be used to study moderate-severe disease with moderate accuracy compared to CT angiography

Acurácia da ultrassonografia transcraniana colorida no diagnóstico de forame oval patente / Transcranal color coded sonography for detection of patent foramen ovale in young patients with strokeLibardi, Milena Carvalho 26 January 2016 (has links)
Introdução:O Forame Oval Patente (FOP) é a comunicação direita-esquerda (CDE) ou shunt direita-esquerda (SDE) mais comum e frequentemente encontrada em adultos jovens com Acidente Vascular Cerebral (AVC) relacionado ao mecanismo de embolia paradoxal. A Ecocardiografia Transesofágia (ETE) é considerada o padrão para visualização direta do FOP. O Doppler Transcraniano com o teste de microbolhas é frequentemente usado para detectar CDE com boa correlação com o ETE para o diagnóstico de FOP. Mais recentemente, a Ultrassonografia Transcraniana Colorida (TCCS) com inclusão do modo-B e fluxo de cor tem superado o DTC (que é realizado \"as cegas\") em muitas aplicações clínicas mas a acurácia do TCCS para a detecção de CDE e FOP não tem sido sistematicamente avaliada. Objetivo: Determinar se o TCCS é uma ferramenta acurada para identificar tanto FOP quanto CDE. Métodos: Foram recrutados 106 pacientes prospectivamente com Acidente Vascular Cerebral Isquêmico menores de 55 anos admitidos na Unidade de Emergência do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto (HCFMRP). Os pacientes foram submetidos aos exames de ETE, DTC e TCCS e todos os exames incluíram a técnica do teste de microbolhas. Os examinadores foram cegos para os resultados desses exames e foi calculado a concordância Kappa de Cohen inter-examinadores para o TCCS e DTC. A acurácia para o TCCS foi calculada em comparação ao ETE. Resultados: Foram detectados CDE em 54 (50.9%) dos pacientes (idade média 43.9 ± 8.2 anos) com Kappa de Cohen de 0.92 (IC 95% 0.78-1.0) quando realizados TCCS e TCD. TEE e TCSS foram positivos em 23/98 (23.4%) e ETE negative em 20/98 (20.4%). Em 30 (28.3%) o ETE revelou FOP. O TCSS teve uma sensibilidade de 88.4%(IC 95% 0.68-0.97) e especificidade de 72.2%(IC 95% 0.60-0.81) e uma razão de verossimilhança positive de 3.18 (IC 95% 2.14-4.73) para o diagnóstico de FOP. Conclusão: TCCS e DTC tiveram excelente concordância. TCCS tem uma boa acurácia para a detecção de FOP e CDE em pacientes jovens com Acidente Vascular Isquêmico / Introduction: Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is the most common right-to-left shunt (RLS) and is often found in young patients with stroke related to paradoxical embolism. ContrastEnhanced Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) is considered a gold standard to visualize PFO. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) with bubble test is often used to detect RLS with good correlation to TEE for the diagnostic of PFO. More recently, Transcranial Color Coded Sonography (TCCS) which included B-mode and color coded imaging has overcome blind TCD in many clinical applications but the accuracy of TCCS for detection of RLS and PFO has not been systematically evaluated. Hypothesis: To determine if the TCCS is an accurate tool to identify both PFO and RLS. Methods: We investigate 106 patients with ischemic stroke under 55 years-old admitted from 2012 to 2014 in a tertiary academic hospital. Patients were evaluated with TEE, TCD and TCCS, and all exams included a saline bubble test. The examiners were blinded for the other tests results. Kappa agreement was calculated inter-examiners for TCCS and TCD. Accuracy of TCCS was calculated in comparison to TEE. Results: We detected a RLS in 54 (50.9%) patients (age mean 43.9 ± 8.2) with kappa agreement 0.92 (95%CI 0.78-1.0) when performed TCCS and TCD. TEE and TCSS were positive in 23/98 (23.4%) and TEE did not reveal contrast in 20/98 (20.4%). In 30 (28.3%) patients only TEE revealed a PFO. This study focuses on how gay men communicate on the Grindr dating app. Prior research has been conducted on how gay men construct their online identities, however, few studies explore how gay men experience interactions online, negotiate their relationships with other men online, and perceive other users. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 20 men who use the Grinder app, a location-based dating app used by men who have sex with men. Additional data were collected by observing user profiles on the app, which is free and public. This comprehensive, qualitative study of gay men who use Grindr provides insights into identity construction, communication tactics, and users’ feelings about their encounters on the app.

Etude de turbocodes non binaires pour les futurs systèmes de communication et de diffusion / Study of non-binary turbo codes for future communication and broadcasting systemsKlaimi, Rami 03 July 2019 (has links)
Les systèmes de téléphonie mobile de 4ème et 5ème générations ont adopté comme techniques de codage de canal les turbocodes, les codes LDPC et les codes polaires binaires. Cependant, ces codes ne permettent pas de répondre aux exigences, en termes d’efficacité spectrale et de fiabilité, pour les réseaux de communications futurs (2030 et au-delà), qui devront supporter de nouvelles applications telles que les communications holographiques, les véhicules autonomes, l’internet tactile … Un premier pas a été fait il y a quelques années vers la définition de codes correcteurs d’erreurs plus puissants avec l’étude de codes LDPC non binaires, qui ont montré une meilleure performance que leurs équivalents binaires pour de petites tailles de code et/ou lorsqu'ils sont utilisés sur des canaux non binaires. En contrepartie, les codes LDPC non binaires présentent une complexité de décodage plus importante que leur équivalent binaire. Des études similaires ont commencé à émerger du côté des turbocodes. Tout comme pour leurs homologues LDPC, les turbocodes non binaires présentent d’excellentes performances pour de petites tailles de blocs. Du point de vue du décodage, les turbocodes non binaires sont confrontés au même problème d’augmentation de la complexité de traitement que les codes LDPC non binaire. Dans cette thèse nous avons proposé une nouvelle structure de turbocodes non binaires en optimisant les différents blocs qui la constituent. Nous avons réduit la complexité de ces codes grâce à la définition d’un algorithme de décodage simplifié. Les codes obtenus ont montré des performances intéressantes en comparaison avec les codes correcteur d’erreur de la littérature. / Nowadays communication standards have adopted different binary forward error correction codes. Turbo codes were adopted for the long term evolution standard, while binary LDPC codes were standardized for the fifth generation of mobile communication (5G) along side with the polar codes. Meanwhile, the focus of the communication community is shifted towards the requirement of beyond 5G standards. Networks for the year 2030 and beyond are expected to support novel forward-looking scenarios, such as holographic communications, autonomous vehicles, massive machine-type communications, tactile Internet… To respond to the expected requirements of new communication systems, non-binary LDPC codes were defined, and they are shown to achieve better error correcting performance than the binary LDPC codes. This performance gain was followed by a high decoding complexity, depending on the field order.Similar studies emerged in the context of turbo codes, where the non-binary turbo codes were defined, and have shown promising error correcting performance, while imposing high complexity. The aim of this thesis is to propose a new low-complex structure of non-binary turbocodes. The constituent blocks of this structure were optimized in this work, and a new low complexity decoding algorithm was proposed targeting a future hardware implementation. The obtained results are promising, where the proposed codes are shown to outperform existing binary and non-binary codes from the literature.

Optimal source coding with signal transfer function constraintsDerpich, Milan January 2009 (has links)
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This thesis presents results on optimal coding and decoding of discrete-time stochastic signals, in the sense of minimizing a distortion metric subject to a constraint on the bit-rate and on the signal transfer function from source to reconstruction. The first (preliminary) contribution of this thesis is the introduction of new distortion metric that extends the mean squared error (MSE) criterion. We give this extension the name Weighted-Correlation MSE (WCMSE), and use it as the distortion metric throughout the thesis. The WCMSE is a weighted sum of two components of the MSE: the variance of the error component uncorrelated to the source, on the one hand, and the remainder of the MSE, on the other. The WCMSE can take account of signal transfer function constraints by assigning a larger weight to deviations from a target signal transfer function than to source-uncorrelated distortion. Within this framework, the second contribution is the solution of a family of feedback quantizer design problems for wide sense stationary sources using an additive noise model for quantization errors. These associated problems consist of finding the frequency response of the filters deployed around a scalar quantizer that minimize the WCMSE for a fixed quantizer signal-to-(granular)-noise ratio (SNR). This general structure, which incorporates pre-, post-, and feedback filters, includes as special cases well known source coding schemes such as pulse coded modulation (PCM), Differential Pulse-Coded Modulation (DPCM), Sigma Delta converters, and noise-shaping coders. The optimal frequency response of each of the filters in this architecture is found for each possible subset of the remaining filters being given and fixed. These results are then applied to oversampled feedback quantization. In particular, it is shown that, within the linear model used, and for a fixed quantizer SNR, the MSE decays exponentially with oversampling ratio, provided optimal filters are used at each oversampling ratio. If a subtractively dithered quantizer is utilized, then the noise model is exact, and the SNR constraint can be directly related to the bit-rate if entropy coding is used, regardless of the number of quantization levels. On the other hand, in the case of fixed-rate quantization, the SNR is related to the number of quantization levels, and hence to the bit-rate, when overload errors are negligible. It is shown that, for sources with unbounded support, the latter condition is violated for sufficiently large oversampling ratios. By deriving an upper bound on the contribution of overload errors to the total WCMSE, a lower bound for the decay rate of the WCMSE as a function of the oversampling ratio is found for fixed-rate quantization of sources with finite or infinite support. The third main contribution of the thesis is the introduction of the rate-distortion function (RDF) when WCMSE is the distortion metric, denoted by WCMSE-RDF. We provide a complete characterization for Gaussian sources. The resulting WCMSE-RDF yields, as special cases, Shannon's RDF, as well as the recently introduced RDF for source-uncorrelated distortions (RDF-SUD). For cases where only source-uncorrelated distortion is allowed, the RDF-SUD is extended to include the possibility of linear-time invariant feedback between reconstructed signal and coder input. It is also shown that feedback quantization schemes can achieve a bit-rate only 0.254 bits/sample above this RDF by using the same filters that minimize the reconstruction MSE for a quantizer-SNR constraint. The fourth main contribution of this thesis is to provide a set of conditions under which knowledge of a realization of the RDF can be used directly to solve encoder-decoder design optimization problems. This result has direct implications in the design of subband coders with feedback, as well as in the design of encoder-decoder pairs for applications such as networked control. As the fifth main contribution of this thesis, the RDF-SUD is utilized to show that, for Gaussian sta-tionary sources with memory and MSE distortion criterion, an upper bound on the information-theoretic causal RDF can be obtained by means of an iterative numerical procedure, at all rates. This bound is tighter than 0:5 bits/sample. Moreover, if there exists a realization of the causal RDF in which the re-construction error is jointly stationary with the source, then the bound obtained coincides with the causal RDF. The iterative procedure proposed here to obtain Ritc(D) also yields a characterization of the filters in a scalar feedback quantizer having an operational rate that exceeds the bound by less than 0:254 bits/sample. This constitutes an upper bound on the optimal performance theoretically attainable by any causal source coder for stationary Gaussian sources under the MSE distortion criterion.
