NEVER AGAIN THESSALONIKI – AUSCHWITZ : THE FIRST MEMORY WALK FOR THE JEWS OF SALONICA AND THE REACTIONS OF THE LOCAL PRESS. : A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS (CDA) AND REFLECTION.Gleoudi, Georgia January 2018 (has links)
The end of the Second World War found the city of Thessaloniki devastated by the loss of nearly its total Jewish population in the concentration camps of the Third Reich. A few survivals return to their city just to realize that their fortunes have been confiscated either by the local authorities or by their Christian neighbors. Some Jews decide to leave their former homeland and some others take the decision to remain and start their life from scratch. For the following decades, the Jewish history of the city is being carefully and on purpose hidden and the collective memory erases the traces of Jews. In this part of the story, the Jews by themselves kept a low public profile and remained silent, struggling to survive and rebuild their fortunes. It was in 2013, when a heterogeneous group of people decided to launch the Memory Walk “Never Again” for the 50.000 Jews of Thessaloniki who lost their lives in the Shoa (Holocaust). The Memory walk had to deal with the barriers of the strong nationalistic profile of the city and of its local population. However, the Memory walk came to be established as an institution which exists and grows until today. The current paper examines how local digital media approached the first Memory walk taking into consideration the Jewish history, the stereotypes regarding Jews, the antisemitism and the strong nationalist and deeply religious profile of the city. The first part describes the Jewish presence in Thessaloniki under the Ottoman Empire, the consequences of the Hellenization of the city in 1912, the national identity formation process and the mobilizing role of the Orthodox Church in the political and cultural homogenization. In the second part, digital media articles related to the first Memory Walk are being analyzed according to the CDA (critical discourse analysis) and a critical reflection on how media approached the Memory walk is finally presented. The analysis results will be finalized with the conclusions which derive from in person interviews with key stakeholders of the Memory Walk.

The rise of a manuscript culture and the textualization of discourse in early ChinaKrijgsman, Rens January 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyses a change in the ways people composed and engaged with texts during the Warring States (481-221 BCE) period in Early China. It examines changes in the textual sphere as a result of an emergent manuscript culture, that is to say, the increased spread and reliance on manuscript texts for the communication of ideas. This shift moved away from the predominantly oral, commemorative, and ritual use of text in earlier periods, and provided key elements that would function in the text based discourse of the early empires. It influenced the way text across a variety of genres of writing was used and understood, structured and composed, and how it was collected and combined to form new arguments. I focus on texts from the Documents ?, and Odes ? genres, in addition to philosophical texts dealing with the past, and collections of sayings and arguments dealing with questions from cosmological to ethical issues. These materials form the mainstay of Warring States intellectual discourse, and exemplify the following textual developments: 1) the rise of collecting materials into compilations; 2) the emergence of genre classification; 3) the development of new authorship functions, 3) an increase in textual structuring and the integration of lore about the past, 4) the development of commentarial traditions, 5) the emergence of an explicit, self-reflexive understanding of writing and transmission, 6) advances in material structuring of manuscript-texts that interrelate form and content. The analysis is based primarily on excavated materials not edited during the early empires, and engages with comparative and interdisciplinary theory. It argues against models solely based on transmitted sources, which explained Warring States developments as a response to socio-political contexts. Instead, it posits developments in the textual culture itself as a necessary condition to explain the changes in intellectual discourse of the period.

This dissertation addresses an action research whose general objective is to unveil the collective memory of indigenous students in the process of inclusion in higher education by considering their access to and permanence in the University Residence Hall of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) from 2008 to 2013, in order to intervene in the academic reality. The specific objectives are the following: to know the indigenous students’ profiles to characterize and recognize their origin, family situation and chosen courses; to sensitize the student community to participate in the investigation process in order to make it reflect on the inclusion of indigenous students in higher education and the production of changes to guarantee their access to and permanence in UFRGS; to know their daily experiences along their interaction with the university community to identify the limitations and possibilities of their access to and permanence in UFRGS; to collectively produce a video about the collective memory regarding the importance of inclusion, access and permanence of those students in the university community to impact the academic reality. As methodological procedures, we can point out the theoretical review of both the topic and the categories of collective memory, affirmative actions, cultural diversity, higher education, social inclusion and ethnic minorities. The development of the action research involved four major stages: exploratory stage (diagnosis), main stage (planning), action stage (seminar and filming) and assessment stage (analysis of the results and video production). Six indigenous students attending UFRGS participated in the research and collectively produced a video that has unveiled the memories of their process of inclusion in UFRGS, their limitations and possibilities in the daily academic routine, issues related to their access to and permanence in the university, and the changes they have proposed. The research has been an important strategy for implementing changes in the academic sphere concerning the access of indigenous students to UFRGS and their permanence in this institution.

O território mito da orla : antropologia de conflitos territoriais urbanos e memórias ambientais em Porto Alegre, RS / The myth territory of the waterfront : anthropology of urban terrirorial conflicts and environmental memories in Porto Alegre, RSSoares, Ana Paula Marcante January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation presents an ethnographic study about territorial conflicts surfaced in the process of transformation of urban landscape on the waterfront of Guaíba Lake, in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, through urban projects idealized and implanted in the south waterfront of the city, particularly in Cristal neighborhood and its adjacencies. Amid the conflicts related to the use and occupation of the lake waterfront, this study aims to understand how the material and symbolic construction of this area operates over time, focusing on the way social belonging and social roots, as well as mobility and urban dynamism, expressed in the narrative of the inhabitants of these territories under dispute, are built. The conception of time and space from which this dissertation develops articulates a dialogic relation between two scales of analysis: everyday life and sociability of the inhabitants on the way they occupy these urban spaces under conflict; contemporary urban policies and its regulations of the urban space. Based on the idea of an ongoing appraisement process regarding the heritage of the lake waterfront, this research analyzes principles, orientations and languages oriented by the ideas of the democratic city that are incorporated by the logic of the regulation of the city in the Brazilian context, considering the “environmental” adjustment of the urban dynamics. In this context, this study investigates the practices and meanings attributed by the subjects involved in the territorial conflicts, emphasizing the continuity and discontinuity of value systems, social identities and memories at play in these territories, evidencing tensions between homogeneity/heterogeneity of the political dynamics and social experiences in the process of urban transformation.

Learning through performance : theatre, education and the First World War at the beginning of the centenary momentPhipps, Amanda Dawn January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores representations of the First World War in English theatre, Theatre in Education (TIE), and Living History between 2014 and 2015. By employing an interdisciplinary approach it evaluates these performance genres in relation to responses sought from Key Stage 3 History pupils. The beginning of the centenary created a cultural outpouring and provided opportunities for secondary schools to include field trips and creative learning about the war. Examination of this commemorative period is contextualised by examining pupils’ interaction with cultural works since 1914, showing that the centenary moment stemmed from a tradition of creatively remembering and teaching the conflict. This perspective highlights long-standing complexities in the relationship between creative practitioners, teachers and education authorities. It also confronts the divide that has grown between some creative practitioners and revisionist historians of the First World War. Revisionist historians’ reassessment of the conduct and necessity of the war has led some to harshly judge cultural works, such as performances, for misleading audiences. Yet little research has been conducted into twenty-first century productions about the war and their reception by school audiences. An investigation of these performances problematizes scholarly notions about how and who has the authority to communicate the First World War to the next generation. Whilst the providers, gatekeepers, and critics of learning through performance are of central consideration, this thesis also values the pupil’s voice. Ten Key Stage 3 cohorts are used as case studies, providing a snapshot of the creative activities and field trips employed by schools in 2014 and 2015. Interviews and questionnaires provide pupils’ feedback on what they thought and how they felt about studying history through performance. Observations of History lessons and performances also remove the debate from the hypothetical to the realities of history teaching. They reveal that pupils’ cultural backgrounds, schooling, and exposure to cultural works shaped their responses to performances about the First World War. Pupils also assigned the performances varying degrees of historical authority, some viewed them as merely entertainment, others as educational sources and several as a mixture of the two. Performances brought immediacy and life to the historical topic and provoked an empathetic response from many pupils. Yet some struggled with the symbolism of theatre and others feared the participation that came with TIE and Living History. Consequently, this thesis explores pupil’s critical, personal and emotional engagement with performances, raising questions about what criteria should be used to evaluate the success of such non-formal learning on the war.

"Vamo falá do nosso Lami" : estudo antropológico sobre memória coletiva, cotidiano e meio ambiente no bairro Lami, Porto AlegreRechenberg, Fernanda January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is the result of an ethnographic study, developed in conjunction with a group of local inhabitants from the neighbourhood of Lami, in Porto Alegre. Drawing from the local elders memories, the study represents the routines and the social interactions of such a group that leads to a unique urban experience in inhabiting a city. Lami is located in the most southerly district of the city, renown for its beautiful swimming beaches and amazing landscapes of natural beauty. It is an area free from the crowds which characterizes the more urban areas of the city. However, welcome as they are, it has been accommodating more and more inhabitants over the last few years. Its land have been sold and transformed into gated residential developments, which impact greatly on the landscape as well as the local social environment. This ‘progress’, that has brought the power distribution network, paved road infrastructure and the benefits of a public transportation system, unfortunately also promotes all the illogicalities of the modern world. The image of a rural neighborhood, a rural area perfect for fishing and tourism, conjoined with the city backdrop whose inhabitants, predominately look there for sustainable employment. Facing atemporal conflicts perceived as a “crisis point” by the local elders, there is an urgent need for these people to update their routine and rediscover their ties of sociability and solidarity which will anchor a “communal aesthetics” in the neighbourhood, providing such a distinctive environment within the city.

Previous issue date: 2009 / The religion, like a form of. To know about and to organize the things of the world, appeared as question for the Anthropology and it has folloied its development since its beginning as science. Like a fact social total, the analysis of the religious field makes possible to glimpse the most varied spheres of the social life, such as: economy, politics, aesthetic, blood relations… I consider here a study of case of a place of fetichism of Umbanda located in the quarter of the Pirambu, Fortaleza. From the narratives - ritual and personal - I’ve folloied the generations of a group that does not remain the same throughout the time. Some elements enter; others (already without use) leave; others still are remeaning, however without a radical change of the cult structure. Admitting itself that all religion is a rearrangement of preexisting beliefs, the Umbanda is only used of these interrituals to reaffirm its condition since the sprouting: a flexible religion and in constant construction.
