The creation of the Small New England Town in Alice Hoffman’s Massachusetts novels:a cultural imagological studyJylhä, E.-J. (Eva-Jo) 28 October 2014 (has links)
Abstract
The region of New England has played a strong role in the formation and development of the United States on both physical and ideological levels, and the image of the small New England town is highly evocative at both a regional and national level. It is an image shaped by an awareness of the past and the needs of the time. Alice Hoffman is a popular writer who often writes about people living in small New England towns. This thesis is a study of how Hoffman’s fictional small New England towns are created in six of her Massachusetts novels, Practical Magic (1995), The River King (2000), Blue Diary (2001), The Probable Future (2003), Blackbird House (2004) and The Red Garden (2011).
To provide a framework for this study, concepts developed by cultural geographers such as sense of place and landscape are combined with imagological, sociological and historical ideas of collective memory and narrative identity. Phenomenology is at the root of the epistemological stance and concepts that are central to this study of the creation of place. Concepts of place, time and identity from across disciplines are combined in an extension of the horizons of imagology that shifts focus from national images to a broader range of images producing a cultural imagological study of the creation of Hoffman country.
This study works with various levels of engagement and interaction with community in the fictional towns of the novels. The major sub-communities in The River King are used to amplify the workings of a sense of place and nostalgia in relation to rootedness. The town community as a whole is studied through Blackbird House and The Red Garden to explore how history and memory merge to create the mythology central to the identity of a town. Changing interactions with community at an individual level are scrutinized through a topobiographical study of the reconstruction of narrative identity in the novels Practical Magic and Blue Diary. The Probable Future figures around the interaction of a family with the rest of the community and this changing interaction is examined through the processes and functions of memorialization. All six novelistic towns are then examined in terms of landscape and imagined communities. Through the study, a mapping of Hoffman Country emerges and the formation of Hoffman’s imagined small New England towns is explicated.
Alice Hoffmann on suosittu nykykirjailija, jonka useissa teoksissa henkilöhahmot asuvat Uuden-Englannin pikkukaupungeissa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarkastella, miten Hoffman rakentaa fiktiivisiä kaupunkeja kuudessa Massachusettsiin sijoittuvassa teoksessaan. Tutkimusaineistona ovat teokset Practical Magic (1995, suom. Noitasisaret), The River King (2000), Blue Diary (2001), The Probable Future (2003), Blackbird House (2004) ja The Red Garden (2011, suom. Punainen puutarha).
Olennaisimmat yhteisöt romaanissa The River King vahvistavat paikan ymmärryksen ja nostalgisuuden merkityksen henkilöhahmojen kokemalle juurettomuudelle. Kaupunkiyhteisöjä on tarkasteltu novellikokoelmien Blackbird House ja The Red Garden avulla osoittamaan, miten historia ja muisti toimivat rakentaen mytologista paikan identiteettiä. Yksilöiden toisistaan erottuva yhteisöllinen vuorovaikutus analysoidaan topobiografisella tavalla rekonstruoitaessa narratiivista identiteettiä romaaneissa Practical Magic ja Blue Diary. The Probable Future -teoksen hahmojen vuorovaikutus perheen sisällä ja muun yhteisön kanssa ilmentää muistelmallisuuden prosessia. Kaikkia kuutta fiktiivistä kaupunkia tarkastellaan maiseman ja fiktiivisen yhteisöllisyyden näkökulmista.
Tämä tutkimus osoittaa Alice Hoffmanin uusienglantilaisiin pikkukaupunkeihin sijoittuvien teosten analyysin avulla, miten kirjailijat voivat käyttää ja muokata teoksissaan mielikuvia paikoista luodessaan tunnesiteitä yksilöiden, yhteisöjen ja miljöiden välille.

Kleinplasie living open air museum: a biography of a site and the processes of history-making 1974 – 1994Jonas, Michael Jesaja January 2012 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / In 1974 an Agricultural Museum Committee was established at the Worcester Museum which ultimately led to the development in 1981 of the Kleinplasie Open Air Farm Museum. This began a new phase in the museum’s history, one that I will argue was particularly closely linked to Afrikaner nationalist historiography, in particular to ideas about frontier farmers and pioneer farming lifestyles and activities. This study will take the form of a critical analysis of the establishment of Kleinplasie Living Open Air Museum from 1974 until 1994. It will evaluate the making of exhibitions, its architecture, and the performances and public activities in the establishment of the institution as a site of memory and knowledge. The key question this work engages with is how representations, performance, exhibitions, museum activities, and public involvement were shaped to create particular messages and construct a site of cultural identity and memory at Kleinplasie Living Open Air Museum. It will also deal with questions around who decides on the voices and content of the exhibitions, architecture and displays. The role played by professionals, those who claim to represent community, donors and other interests groups will also be placed under the spotlight. There are also questions around the provenance of collections, the way they were acquired through donations and sponsorships, and the crucial role objects played in the construction of the narrative and identity of the museum.A key question that emerges from my own work is the connection between the Afrikaner nationalist scholarship and the development of the open-air museum based on the life of the frontier farmer at Kleinplasie. While Kleinplasie does not seem to follow the monumental approach that was evident in schemes such as the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, where triumphalism and conquest are key metaphors, it does rely on a sense of
‘independence’ and self-fulfilment in social history type setting. There is thus a need to consider how Afrikaner nationalist historiography impacted on the way history was depicted at Kleinplasie. P. J. van der Merwe’s studies of the character and lifeways of the trekboer(Die Trekboer in die Geskiedenis van die Kaapkolonie), seems to have played a central role in the construction of the theme and narrative. This three-volume trilogy provided Kleinplasie(literally, ‘little farm’) with a social and cultural history on which to construct its version of the past.

The case of the transformation of Valparaiso’s former prison (Chile)Van Diest Honorato, Camila 16 December 2016 (has links)
This thesis studies the transformation of Valparaiso’s former prison into a cultural space, from the moment of its clearance in 1999. Starting from a fieldwork based on in-depth interviews, written press material and other secondary sources, the investigation examines the singular configurations which contributes to the recovery of this space stigmatized because of its former functions. In this regard, the relations between the prison world and the art and culture world as well as the administration modes half way between the institutional and the civic, are analyzed. This thesis argues that the uninhabited infrastructures are not “neutral”, but are rooted into the urban space, forming the framework of collective memories and are of significations which go beyond merely functional characteristics. In this way this investigation explores the effects of the former prison on the symbolic capital and the work of local artists, framed in a situation of material precariousness. Reciprocally, this research analyses the re-appropriations of the space and to what extent they tend to legitimise the former prison itself. In the context of the designation of Valparaíso as world heritage by the Unesco in 2003, and more broadly of the neoliberal economic Chilean system, the former prison appears as a platform for diverse mega infrastructure projects, with the aim of boosting the city through strategies based on patrimonialization, tourism and services. In this regard, the thesis explores the conflict dimension of the location, by taking into account the official promotion speeches of these megaprojects, the forms of resistance they are confronted to, and the challenges experienced by the occupants themselves to organise and consolidate a common project.

Performing Historical Narrative at the Canadian War Museum: Space, Objects and Bodies as PerformersBeattie, Ashlee E. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the symmetry between theatres and museums, and investigates how a museum experience is similar to a theatrical event. Particularly, this project examines how the Canadian War Museum performs historical narrative through its use of three performative elements of a theatre production: space, objects and actor’s body.
Firstly, this thesis analyses how creating a historical narrative is similar to fiction writing and play writing. It follows the argument of Hayden White and Michel de Certeau who recognize a historical narrative as a performative act. Accordingly, this thesis examines the First World War exhibit at the Canadian War Museum as a space of performance. I apply Lubomír Doležel’s literary theory on possible worlds, illustrating how a museum space can create unique characteristics of a possible world of fiction and of history. Secondly, this thesis employs Marie-Laure Ryan’s theory of narrativity to discuss how museum objects construct and perform their stories. I argue that the objects in museums are presented to the public in a state of museality similar to the condition of theatricality in a theatre performance. Lastly, this thesis investigates the performance of people by applying various theories of performance, such as Michael Kirby’s non-acting/acting continuum, Jiří Veltruský’s concept of the stage figure, and Freddie Rokem’s theories of actors as “hyper-historians.” In this way, this thesis explores concrete case studies of employee/visitor interactions and expands on how these communications transform the people within the walls of the museum into performers of historical narrative.
Moreover, according to Antoine Prost, the museum as an institution is an educational and cultural authority. As a result, in all of these performative situations, the Canadian War Museum presents a historical narrative to its visitors with which it can help shape a sense of national identity, the events Canadians choose to commemorate and their personal and/or collective memories. In its interdisciplinary scope, this thesis calls upon theories from a variety of academic fields, such as performance studies, history and cultural studies, museology, and literary studies. Most importantly, however, this project offers a new perspective on the performative potentials of a national history museum.

Memories of Life and Death : Three Practices of Remembering in Post-Dictatorial Argentina / Minnen av liv och död : tre minnespraktiker i efterdiktaturens ArgentinaHultin Bäckersten, Karin January 2017 (has links)
Detta är en tvåårig mastersuppsats i ämnet musei- och kulturarvsvetenskap / The purpose of this thesis is to discuss some of the memory-practices in post-dictatorial Argentina regarding the collective memory of the Dirty War and the people who were objects of forced disappearances. The practices studied are Madres de Plaza de Mayo, sites of memory established in former centres of detention and Parque de la Memoria. The thesis draws upon the theoretical framework of collective memory and collective trauma, memorial museums and material culture. The study was formed as a case study. The materials are observations, interviews and photographs, and were gathered through field work in Argentina in 2017. The Madres de Plaza de Mayo were analysed using theories on lieux de mémoire brought forward by Pierre Nora and commemoration ceremonies brought forward by Paul Connerton. The sites of memory were studied out of the perspective on memorial museums by Paul Williams. Parque de la Memoria was studied with theories on war memorials by Jay Winter. The Madres de Plaza de Mayo can be interpreted as lieu de mémoire due to their material, symbolic and functional dimensions. Through them, the disappeared are alive. The sites of memory present an ambivalent narrative. The narrative of the disappeared is that of a state of limbo. Parque de la Memoria is a park of mourning, placing the disappeared in a narrative of death. The situation of memory-practices in post-dictatorial Argentina is complex and the practices articulates three different narratives of the disappeared, ranging from life to death. This is a two-year master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies

The present study presents the idea of the use of a pedagogical site as a support tool for the Museum of Ex-combatants of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force in World War II, located in Caxias do Sul - RS. In order to enhance the museum's pedagogical use, as well as collaborate to increase the visibility of the institution, the page functions as a complement mechanism and interpretation of the physical museum, without the intention of replacing it. The proposal is divided in three stages, the first one being a study about the context in which Brazil was inserted until the beginning of the war, deepening the political actions defined in Vargas' government until Brazil entered the war. This stage also brings to discussion the context in which small squares are inserted in the South of Brazil. The second stage deals with the problematic of memory and its places where these are more "intense", the so-called "places of memory". The third directly addresses the FEB Museum and its structures, both organizational and expository. The course of the museum is divided into eight steps, each of which explains the panels that constitute the chronology of Brazilian participation in the war. In order to construct the site, we used the most diverse sources that can be used to discuss the theme and to clarify the role of the squares in the world conflict. Among these sources were used: films, books, newspapers, periodicals, documents and artifacts that are part of the structure of the museum. The proposal shows the importance of these diverse sources for the teaching of history. The Brazilian is unaware of its history, so it has a fragile memory that changes easily and ends up not having many ties with the past. The study shows the richness of the museum as a place of memory and a tool for teaching history.

Previous issue date: 2017-12-06 / With the development of new technologies, we are currently experiencing a revolution in the information society. The Internet has provided greater global integration and has completely altered the recall process, given that the facts posted on the web tend to be timeless and it is not subject to the common biological process of forgetting. In this context, some conflicts were brought to the Judiciary, involving, on the one hand, the supposed "right to forget" (linked to the rights of the personality) and, on the other, the right to freedom of expression and communication. In this work, two cases involving the so-called "right to oblivion" ("Chacina da Candelária" and "Aída Curi") will be studied, both judged on the same day, by STJ, under the report of Minister Luis Felipe Salomão. The factual context of the cases in question was analyzed separately, but the grounds of the decisions were dealt with together, since the High Court used the same arguments to make both decisions, although the solutions pointed out were different: in the case "Chacina da Candelária" (REsp. No. 1,334,097 / RJ), the STJ first applied the right to forgetfulness, since the "Aída Curi" Case (REsp. No. 1,335,153 / RJ) was considered an unforgettable one. In this work, we will analyze the position adopted by the Supreme Court in these cases, discussing whether the way the right to forgetfulness was conceived represents a threat to the right to freedom of expression and communication and the right to collective memory. In order to elucidate the problem, the general aspects involving personality rights, the right to freedom of expression and the collision of fundamental rights will be observed. The institute of collective memory will also be studied.

Roman history in Legenda Aurea : How the Roman Empire during the reign of Decius, Diocletian and Maximian can be seen through the eyes of the thirteenth century.Jakobsson, Fredrik January 2021 (has links)
This essay takes its starting point in Legenda Aurea, a hagiographical compendium written in the thirteenth century by an Italian catholic friar, Jacobus de Voragine. The essay aims to find out how the Roman history in the third century is shown in Legenda Aurea, a Christian book written about a thousand years later. The purpose of this essay is to show how a part of the history of the Roman Empire is understood and remembered during the Christian hegemony that was during the thirteenth century. The main results of this essay show that the history of the Roman Empire during the reign of named emperors is remembered as a violent, brutal and authoritarian history, but also that Christianity seems to have been widespread within the Roman Empire during this time.
