Solution-Focused Therapy and Communication Skills Training: An integrated approach to couples therapy

Mudd, James Edmund 27 December 2000 (has links)
This study uses a quasi-experimental design to determine if a solution-focused therapy (SFT) approach to couples counseling can be effective in improving an individual's marital satisfaction, and if a SFT approach to couples therapy can be improved upon by adding a one-time, psycho-educational intervention (i.e. Video #2 from the Fighting for your Marriage series: The Speaker/Listener Technique) that is normally not a part of the model. Nine male-female couples participated in the project. One group (n = 8) completed treatment without viewing the communication skills video while the other group (n = 10) viewed the video at week two of treatment. Three questions were asked when analyzing data: 1. Do individuals who receive both solution-focused therapy and the speaker/listener tape end therapy reporting a greater increase in marital satisfaction than individuals who receive solution-focus therapy only? 2. Do individuals who receive both solution-focused therapy and the speaker/listener tape end therapy reporting a greater increase in satisfaction with their couple communication than those who receive solution-focused therapy only? 3. Do individuals who receive both solution-focused therapy and the speaker/listener tape end therapy reporting more satisfaction with the therapy process than those who receive solution-focused therapy only? No significant difference in marital satisfaction or communication satisfaction was found between the two groups. However, individuals who viewed the video reported being significantly more satisfied with therapy. In addition, both groups reported significant improvement in their relationships which suggests that SFT promotes change. Evidence also suggests that males and females respond to SFT in significantly different ways. The study was limited by its small sample size and one measure that was deemed unreliable. Findings suggest that integration of models and/or interventions is a delicate balance of art and design, and can be altered by such things as dose, philosophy, and placement of psychosocial treatments. / Master of Science

Arquitetura, cidade e cinema: vanguardas e imaginário / Architecture, city and cinema: avant-Gardes and imaginary

Lezo, Denise 10 May 2010 (has links)
In the first decades of the twentieth century, in the cultural context of the European Avant Gardes, architecture, city and cinema had established between themselves different forms of dialogue, including the creation of fictional architectures and cities destined exclusively for the films. [en] WHEN THOUGHT COMES DANCING, WHEN SOVEREIGNTY TREMBLES: EVENT TO COME, DEMOCRACY TO COME, REASON TO COME / [pt] QUANDO O PENSAMENTO VEM DANÇANDO, QUANDO A SOBERANIA TREME: EVENTO POR VIR, DEMOCRACIA POR VIR, RAZÃO POR VIR

SÉRGIO PEREIRA ANDRADE 19 December 2017 (has links)
[en] The dissertation discusses ethical and political relations between thinking dance and thinking philosophy with Jacques Derrida s deconstruction. Its premise is that dance performs a way of thinking that challenges the arch-pedagogyphilosophical heritage that closes philosophy at the restricted task of hand-visual calculation. In its approach, what we understand as dance s thought shakes this perspective, which doesn t means that the dance and its artists have the means to question the philosophy, but who are carriers of a thinking that does not end in the field of philosophical conceptual production. Thus with the approach between dance and philosophy, we intend to explore some possibilities that open for the experience of a cross-disciplinary thinking and not conceptual. The argument is developed from three important notions designed by the French-Algerian philosopher: event to come, democracy to come and reason to come - that works together in the radical opening task of yes, yes to the thinking. Other Derridean themes are dialogued as: right to philosophy, ipseity, spectrality, archive fever, narrative and circular economic factor and blind thinking. Although the dissertation is focused mainly on Derrida s proposals its text evokes a multiauthorial tone, combining other signatures of Philosophy, Theories of Dance and Performance Studies, as well as works of dance and performance.

'They come here to tangle' : an ethnographic study of relationships of people with dementia

McColgan, Gillian Margaret January 2001 (has links)
This is a sociological ethnography of nine people with dementia living in a private nursing home in central Scotland. It seeks to find an alternative way to view people in this situation, in a field that has been dominated by the medical modeL. By placing the people before the disease of dementia, they can be studied within the same framework as any people. For this study this framework is everyday life sociology with a focus on symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology and dramaturgy. Additionally, by gaining the subjective perspective, we can get close to understanding meaning for these people. The ethnographic methods I use consist of participant observation and interviews. For analysis I employ NUDIST to structure the data and the thesis. The settng, Lavender Wing of Deer View Grange Nursing Home, provides context for the study. This is a culture of surveillance and routines, which can be restrictive, infantilizing and disabling for residents. Despite this culture research findings are of socially active participants. By examining relationships through an interactional framework three thematic areas developed concerned with emotions, interactions and classification. These thematic spheres demonstrate the emotional self, the interactional self and the generalized self of research informants. The emotional is concerned with the most inner and intimate self, often engaging in backstage intimacies and in thought. Significant others share with the interactional self, in frontstage performances, which are more ritualistic. The generalized self interacts with the generalized other, most often consisting of everyone in Lavender Wing and is concerned with classification and boundarydefinition. Within these spheres the described relationships are fluid and change according to the situation, and how participating actors define it. To engage in intimacies, rituals and form, and to shift between them requires social competence and active participation. People in this study demonstrate these. Despite restrictions they offer resistance to the environment and to dementia. They often make profound and metaphorical statements, to which this ethnography gives voice. Keywords Everyday life; interaction; nursing home culture; people with dementia; resistance; self and others; social competence; surveillance.

The purpose of this dissertation is to link Antonio Negri and Michael Hardt's concept of crowd to indymedia center - a global network of independent media - to create a new concept: the concept of “crowd journalism”. The suggested concept refers especially to the resistance to the hegemonic media. Indymedia is made by the crowd, by resistance groups of the poor and by movements for a different globalization and it makes crowd, by trying to create a non-centered territory. Thus, Indymedia is an open map of countless uniquenesses, what directs us to our problem: what elements of the resistence map are enabled by Indymedia? The dissertation passes by two topics - theoretical research in authors of the criticism, like Antonio Negri, Michael Hardt, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari and Giuseppe Cocco; and research of documents of Indymedia network. The links between theses topics allow “crowd journalism” to be the continuity of these theories in media fields.

In the context of XVI century, the author wrote about innumerable theme like prayer, obedience, work, mission, death, life, diseases, religion, however, we will make a recort to talk about the categories of the love, the erotism and the mystic, by the psychoanalytic bias interpretation, specially founded in the theories of Freud and Lacan, and others authors studied in the course of Science of Religion. The themes erotism and mystic are in the category of language studies, as a commonplace in which mysticism is a form of speech, a sacred marriage, a secret hidden between both: God and “one other”, in a extatic experience, a place of silence, sharing and merging between the real, the symbolic and the imaginary.

Simulation of Switched Ethernet

Kumar Nachegari, Kishore, Babu Eadi, Suresh January 2006 (has links)

Switched Ethernet is an Ethernet LAN that uses switches to connect individual nodes.

This is popular because of its effective and convenient way of extending the bandwidth of

existing Ethernets. Switched Ethernet is being considered by the industry community because

of its open standardization, cost effectiveness, and the support for higher data rates up to

10Gbps. Even though many special-purposed solutions were proposed to support time

constrained communication over Switched Ethernet, still there were some doubts about the

real time handling capability of Switched Ethernet. To achieve reliable transmission

guarantees for real time traffic over Switched Ethernet, it is important to measure the

performance of Switched Ethernet networks for real time communication. In this thesis work

we have observed the average end-to-end packet delay for real time traffic over a Switched

Ethernet by simulation, which is very much essential for real time communication in

industrial applications, where the communication is time-deterministic. In our thesis we used

FCFS priority queuing in both the source nodes and switch. In this thesis we also discussed

about the feasibility analysis for fixed sized frames and some traffic handling methods. We

used 100mbp/s single full duplex Ethernet switch for our simulation. Finally simulation

analysis and simulation results are discussed. Our purpose of simulation of Switched Ethernet

networks is of good importance for the real time industrial applications.
