Describing the Rabies Management System in an Ontario Municipality: A Mixed Methods Study of Human and Companion Animal Health OutcomesReid, Morgann 27 November 2018 (has links)
Rabies management can be described as successful only if examined through a human health perspective. Negating companion animal health outcomes in rabies management creates systemic failures as cats and dogs are significant within our society and bridge humans and wildlife in rabies transmission. A shifting pet ownership culture has created opportunities for increased rabies risk. This thesis applied the One Health concept to the rabies management system in an Ontario municipality. The One Health concept considers that the health of humans is inherently connected to the health of companion animals and their shared environment.
A mixed methods design informed a visual conceptualization of the rabies management system. Factors influencing human and companion animal health outcomes were identified through multivariable logistic regression models. The human outcome of interest was the recommendation of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis after a potential rabies exposure by a companion animal; the companion animal outcomes were receiving a post-incident rabies vaccine, being euthanized for rabies testing and being placed under observation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with private veterinarians to understand their perceived role in rabies management.
Rabies management is more complex than linear interactions and processes that occur to protect human health. An explicit link between the human and companion animal health outcomes was found. Companion animal species appeared as an influential factor and indicates that ownership practices differ between cats and dogs. This implies that veterinarians are not effectively leveraged as the link between public health and pet owners. Indeed, veterinarian’s approach their rabies management roles based on their prioritization of the seriousness of rabies compared to the risk. Through the application of One Health thinking to the municipal rabies management system, it is clear that there is a public-private divide where mitigating human rabies exposures conflicts with the prevention of rabies in companion animals.

O acompanhante de criança submetida à cirurgia cardíaca: possibilidades de atuação do enfermeiro / The companion of the child submited to the cardiac surgery: a possibility of the nurse actionDominique Cavalcanti Méllo 13 December 2007 (has links)
In my professional experience in assistance, in a state hospital specialized in Cardiology, taking care of children with congenital cardiopathy, I lived situations that occurred from less orientation to the companions. Clear Round : Equestrian Embodiments - Race and Gender MattersWahl, Alice January 2017 (has links)
The object of this thesis is to explore the connections between race, gender and equestrianism. This aim stems from personal experiences of becoming a “horse girl” in a Swedish horsebackriding context, which indeed is lined with racialized and gendered norms. I am inclined to understand how equestrianism, i.e. horseback riding practices and communities, often comes to be considered as white and (un)obtainable for some and not others. Through interviews with nine equestrians located in the United States and observations in their stable environments, the thesis seek to investigate how gender and racial norms appear and materialize, and thus shape the interviewed participants lived experiences in horse human environments. Through a theoretical framework of Sara Ahmed’s elaboration on phenomenology, Karen Barad’s term intra-action and Donna Haraway’s figuration companion species, the thesis discusses the multi-layered and complex ways in which race and gender is produced in and produces equestrian spaces and practices. The analysis shows that equestrianism is habitually oriented around whiteness, shaping the proximity between some (and not other) human and horse bodies in the regional landscape where the participants reside. Horses are both organized in and organize the contours of the city, entangled in the politics of racial segregation and the materialization of classed environments and neighborhoods. Equestrian communities, especially those that practice the disciplines of dressage and show jumping, repeatedly welcome and extend certain human (and non-human) bodies while stopping and questioning others. Further, different equestrian spaces materializes in differentiating and multi-sensoric ways, making certain color schemes, tactile sensations of textures and scents appear as racialized and gendered, and in turn forms the premises of belonging. The thesis then displays the political and affective connections between human and non-human bodies, objects and rooms in the specific context of equestrianism, and argues that such aspects must be understood as co-produced rather than separate entities. The discussion thus complicates binary dichotomies such as nature and culture, human and non-human and matter and discourse, showing how such aspects instead are entangled in the production of equestrianism and racialized and gendered “difference”.

Being companion of women with breast cancer: comprehensive analysis from the perspective of the partnersLeonardo Toshiaki Borges Yoshimochi 17 September 2015 (has links)
Também reconheceram seus sofrimentos pelas dificuldades enfrentadas, mas não buscaram nenhuma ajuda profissional para cuidar deles próprios / Cancer, like any disease that threatens life, reaches beyond the sick, those who are closest to him. The purpose of this study is to understand how to be companion of women with breast cancer, in his perspective. A qualitative methodology, grounded on the theoretical framework of Phenomenological-Existential Psychology, based in the thought of Martin Heidegger was used. A total of ten partners of women with breast cancer who attended one mastectomy rehabilitation center. In the period from June to November 2014, phenomenological interviews, individual audio recorded were carried out, from a guiding question: \"How has it been for you to be companion of a woman with breast cancer?\" The interviews were transcribed literally and in full, constituting the corpus of analysis. Undertaken in successive readings, focused to the phenomenon researched in search of the meaning units were grouped giving rise to the themes. The ethical principles were respected for research with human beings contained in the National Health Council Resolution 466/2012. The results were presented in seven major units: Living the impact of diagnosis and emotional instability; Sharing the care of women with other family members; Sharing coping with the disease in couple\'s relationship; The coping with the disease and its effect on the couple\'s intimacy; In the time horizon, the beckon of the shadow of death; Psychological suffering of companions; Social support used by companions. The results showed that the companions suffered and made themselves available to care for their women from receiving the news of the disease until the day of the interview. They also acknowledged their suffering by the difficulties encountered, but did not seek any professional help to take care of themselves

Ahlén, Björn January 2005 (has links)

Integrating the Google Cast Technology in a Second-screen SolutionLavrell, Niklas January 2014 (has links)
The newly released Google Chromecast has generated an increasing amount of interest for so called second-screen experiences in the market. Although the technology behind such experiences has existed for a couple of years, end users are now truly starting to grasp the concept and benefits of multi-screen. The company, at which the thesis was performed at, provides a cloud-based messaging solution for Internet connected devices, which enables multi-screen use cases. To increase the amount of supported platforms in the solution, new technologies frequently needs to be integrated. In this thesis I have performed an exploratory research & development project with the aim to integrate the Google Cast technology in this multi-screen solution. The fundamental difference in how the two ecosystems were designed resulted in a companion device framework that acted as a wrapper over the technologies. The framework was implemented on the Android platform together with a set of demo applications. The proposed solution should be seen as a starting point for integrating different multi-screen technologies within a single companion device framework. While combining these technologies, a fundamental difference in the user experience between them became apparent. The Google Cast ecosystem relies on the companion device as the interaction point for the end user, whereas television (TV) applications usually have the main interaction point on the actual TV itself via a dedicated remote control. Having this kind of inconsistency within the same set of applications increases the risk of confusion among end users. Therefore I suggest that development of such multi-screen experiences, that combines these technologies, should strive for a high consistency throughout the whole user experience, independent of platforms and technology.

Using the DIAL Protocol for Zero Configuration Connectivity in Cross-Platform MessagingBergwik, Emil January 2014 (has links)
Today's living room context offers more and more possibilities when it comes to when and how to interact with the television and media content offerings. Buzzwords such as "TV Everywhere" is something that both hardware manufacturers, content providers and television networks are pursuing to great lengths. At the core of such marketing schemes is the availability of platform-independent content consumption. In a Utopian setting, the end-user should never have to worry if he or she is currently using a smart TV, tablet, phone or computer to view a video or photos, play music or play games. Taking the concept even further, the devices should also be able to connect and communicate with each other seamlessly. Having for example a television set (first screen) controlled by a mobile phone (second screen) is commonly referred to as companion device interaction and is what this thesis has investigated. More specifically, a way of discovering and launching a first screen application from a second screen application using the zero configuration discovery protocol named DIAL has been implemented into a cross-platform messaging solution. A case study was conducted to gather data about the system and its context as well as what was needed of the framework in terms of architecture design, use cases and implementation details. A proof of concept application was developed for Android that used the proposed framework, showcasing the ease of use and functionality presented in integrating DIAL into such a solution. Since DIAL is so well-documented, easy to understand and is becoming one of the industry standards among consumer electronic manufacturers in terms of device discovery, I believe it should become a standard for so called zero configuration companion device interactivity.
