Instructional needs assessment for managing conflict between watershed resource users in Oregon : the OWIC case studySaeed, Ikram 11 November 1993 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore a needs
assessment method for suggesting target-based training
interventions for managing conflict between the resource
user/interest groups in Oregon's riparian zones. An
instrument was developed and then validated by an expert
panel. The questionnaire addressed three potential
conflict management factors: multiple-use orientation,
abundance philosophy, and conflict management styles. The
instrument was distributed to members of the Oregon Water
Improvement Coalition (OWIC) and to samples of its members'
constituencies. Responses from the environmental,
business, and professional groups were then compared to the
OWIC responses as well as to each other's. Usable
information was provided by 95% of the subjects (n=19)
from OWIC and 55% of the subjects (n=158) from the
constituencies.
The OWIC and environmental group members were
relatively less multiple resource use oriented than
business and professional groups. The OWIC group was
relatively more abundance philosophy oriented than
professional and business groups. The professional and
business groups in turn were significantly different than
the environmentalist members. Both OWIC and professional
groups were relatively more solution oriented than business
and environmentalist under the riparian zones' resource use
conflict situation.
The instrument appeared to be sufficiently reliable
and valid for its purpose. Future research should employ
an interdisciplinary approach for improving the instrument
by adding questions on facilitating communication between
and among the interest groups. The utility of gathering
information on the nonconfrontation and control conflict
management styles and philosophy of land management factors
deserves further study. / Graduation date: 1994

The role of night paddock manuring in the reduction of poverty and conflict amongst farmers and Grazers in small Babanki (Cameroon).Ndikintum, Ndjinyo Fouda. January 2009 (has links)

Agriculture and livestock production were the mainstay of the economies of many sub-Saharan African countries, including of Cameroon, in the 1970s. Things began to change with the discovery of petroleum products and natural minerals, and the push to industrialise. This led to a shift from agricultural production to other more &lsquo / beneficial&rsquo / sectors. In the 1990s there was an &lsquo / imposed&rsquo / liberalisation of the agricultural sector. This liberalisation was marked by a disengagement of most governments in developing countries from assisting agriculture. In Cameroon, disengagement was achieved by the promulgation of law No. 92/006 of 14th August 1992 and its decree of application No. 92/455/PM of 23rd November. This law encouraged the creation of common initiative groups which could independently pool their resources to increase agricultural production. Although there has been a shift to non-agricultural sectors in many sub-Saharan countries, on the whole, however, many rural areas in these nations have remained essentially agro-pastoral. nfortunately some rural areas, like Small Babanki in Cameroon, whose livelihoods are land-based are faced with soil erosion, population pressure and farmer/grazer conflicts which undermine the little economic gains made in these places. Rural-dwellers have resorted to several innovations to circumvent these constraints to agricultural production.

Why doesn´t anyone get mad at caps nowadays?Hellgren, Gunilla January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine secondary teachers' perceptions of conflict, conflict management, conflict prevention and conflict communication. In addition to theory, I conducted individual interviews and focus group discussions. Most teachers have a common view and argues that a conflict occurs when two or more individuals do not agree on something. Typical conflicts are about grades, teachers' changing professional roles and cellphones in the classroom. In my view, it seems as if the mobile phone has taken over the core conflict that caps created for some 10 years ago, functioning now as the dominant symbol in an ongoing development process providing space for meeting and dealing with conflicts in a constructive way.

Effective Multi-Cultural Project Management : Bridging the gap between national cultures and conflict Management stylesSteurenthaler, Jochen, van Lieshout, Sjors January 2007 (has links)
This study identifies the competencies needed by a multi-cultural project manager, and investigates a potential link between conflict management styles and national culture. It takes as its base the assumption that cultural differences are demonstrated during conflict, and may in fact be the cause of the conflict. As a result, the manager of a multi-cultural project team must be able to manage conflict constructively in order to realise the full potential of the team. The research begins by reviewing literature on project management, national culture, and conflict. A survey was performed on over 60 individuals from various cultural backgrounds, to analyse patterns in their methods of handling conflict. The study shows that there is in fact a link between different cultures and different management styles.
