A arte de esgrimir no vazio: normal, anormal e patológico na poesia de Adília Lopes / The art of fencing in the void: the normal, abnormal and pathologic in the Adília Lopes poetry

Lilian Honda 26 September 2018 (has links)
The issue of psychic suffering is a recurrent theme in Adília Lopes\' artwork, arising in the form of allusions to psychopathology, medications, names of doctors and psychotherapists, and references to the history of mental illness treatment, as well as hospital facilities and their patients. This article aims to analyze the representations of the subject in Adilian poetry, evidencing the critical point of view in relation to the excessive social normalization prevailing in contemporaneity and in scientism, which underlie the medicalization of behaviors. The theoretical reference is based on the concepts of normality and pathology established by Georges Canguilhem, his articulation with Michel Foucault\'s concept of biopower, and the implication of normalizing procedures in the emergence of depression paradigm according to Elizabeth Roudinesco\'s conception.

Binding a Universe: The Formation and Transmutations of the Best Japanese SF (Nenkan Nihon SF Kessakusen) Anthology Series

Hirao, Akiko 21 November 2016 (has links)
The annual science fiction anthology series The Best Japanese SF started publication in 2009 and showcases domestic writers old and new and from a wide range of publishing backgrounds. Although representative of the second golden era of Japanese science fiction in print in its diversity and with an emphasis on that year in science fiction, as the volumes progress the editors’ unspoken agenda has become more pronounced, which is to create a set of expectations for the genre and to uphold writers Project Itoh and EnJoe Toh as exemplary of this current golden era. This thesis analyzes the context of the anthology series’ publication, how the anthology is constructed, and these two writers’ contributions to the genre as integral to the anthologies and important to the younger generation of writers in the genre.

Impossibly indecent God? : pursuing questions of the Biblical God in the Church of Scotland through churchgoers' and Marcella Althaus-Reid's theological ideas, juxtaposed with fragments of Jacques Derrida's philosophy

Brown, Susan Victoria January 2012 (has links)
Marcella Althaus-Reid was a theologian who dared to imagine differently, a thinker whose inventive style brought striking originality to her writings on sexuality and gender, people and God. Her work is remembered most noticeably in theological academia for her conceptual phrase, ‘Indecent Theology’. In this thesis about questions of God, the innovative elements of Marcella’s literary corpus are developed in new ways by placing her academic theories alongside a practical research study undertaken in the alternative milieu of Church of Scotland congregations in Edinburgh. This primary material, which has been analysed through interview and focus group transcripts, together with questionnaire responses, brings revealing insights to frame the emerging tensions between churchgoers and Marcella across the dimensions of its four chapters. In each, the following themes are developed: the ambiguities surrounding questions of asking who God might be; the considerations involved in recognising God’s relationship with the Bible; the exploration of the extent to which sexuality and gender may influence God concepts; and the recognition of the role people play in evaluating their understandings of God in Christianity. Arranged in a rhythmical structure throughout, every chapter is first prefaced by a media-based report which contextualises relevant themes in a contemporary idiom, and is later concluded by a deconstructive postscript that, in fragmentary ways, invokes some critical concepts in the work of Jacques Derrida germane to the particular questions of God pursued in each.

Yangtze - the mother river : photography, myth and deep mapping

Preston, Yan Wang January 2018 (has links)
'The Yangtze is China’s Mother River. It is my Mother River.’ This practice-based PhD research was initially motivated by the researcher’s personal search for The Mother River and a critical question in finding her own vision of the river. As the field experiences contradicted the researcher’s expectation of The Mother River, the research methodology changed and led to a new, critical understanding: The Mother River is mythic. This thesis examines the politics and characters of such a myth. It also asks with what research methods and visual strategy can landscape photography interrogate The Mother River myth’s complexities. Between 2010 and 2014, the author conducted eight field trips to the Yangtze River. Initially working observationally, it soon became apparent that this method alone was insufficient in reaching an original understanding of the physical and cultural Yangtze landscapes. A series of tactile interventions within the landscapes were then performed and critically evaluated prior to the next phase of the research, in which the entire 6,211 km of the Yangtze River was photographed at precise 100 km intervals. A new body of photographic work titled Mother River was produced as a result. To test its effect in challenging the myth, Mother River has been staged in 12 international exhibitions and printed in one complete catalogue. Over 80,000 people visited the shows in China. Deep mapping, which combines experiential and contextual research with multi-sensorial emplacement as a key method, emerged from this research process and is argued as a new contribution to the field of photographic research. Meanwhile, the artistic output of this research, Mother River, is the most systematic documentation of the entire river made by one person since the 1840s. Furthermore, it is argued that using the Y Points System as a physical framework and storytelling a visual strategy, Mother River challenges the mythic Yangtze The Mother River with a scale and complexity rarely employed by other photographers.

Arquiteturas do abandono : [ou uma cartografia nas fronteiras da arquitetura, da filosofia e da arte] / Architectures de l'abandon: ou d'une cartographie à l'intérieur des frontières de l'architecture, la philosophie et l'art / Architectures of Abandonment: or a mapping at the borders of architecture, philosophy and art

Rocha, Eduardo January 2010 (has links)

Rupp, Bettina January 2010 (has links)
The research has defined the transition process from the ‘traditional’ curatorship involved in conservation and organization activities, research and display of the art pieces to a ‘contemporary’ curatorship, characterized by the organization of the exhibition through the elaboration of critical concepts formulated by curator who develops in authorial way the theme of the exhibition and selects which artists will take part in it. This transition happened in the second half of the twentieth century, in synchronicity with the contemporary art and the increasing number of exhibitions, which derived from the increase of exhibition spaces, noticeable in many countries. The research searched the origins of the curatorship to perceive how the activity built up throughout the time until the concerning characteristics of contemporary curatorship were settled. After the assessment about which exhibitions became a reference was made, an analysis was elaborated to precise the changes in the scope of curatorship through the work of various curators. We can highlight among them: Harald Szeemann, Walter Zanini, Achille Bonito Oliva, Sheila Leirner, Jean- Hubert Martin and Paulo Herkenhoff. After the conclusion of the analysis, considerations about the curator as an author of the exhibitions were presented; the relationship between the curatorship and other agents of the artistic field and the curatorship as a part of the construction of Art history.

Ellwanger, Giovana January 2016 (has links)
The artist Paulo Nazareth (Governador Valadares/MG, 1971) develops a poetic in which walkings represent important actions that set dialogs linked to his ethnical origins, black and indigenous. He transits between peripheral and central spaces, resulting in differentiated flows. These actions become meaningful in the present geopolitical context of globalization, what sets, in art domain, tensions between hegemonic and peripheral spaces. From this scene, the research seeks to understand in which way the artist’s actions, in international circulations, discuss his position in global art field. For this purpose, had choose a case analysis about the artist’s actions in the 2013 and 2015 Venice Biennales and in the Venice Biennales / Neves, simultaneous shows to the italian event, occurred in Ribeirão das Neves / MG city’s periphery. Through the field research, it’s possible to study this event’s constitutions, as well as in collecting data with the artist and his representing gallery. As theorical marks of this research, the theory of the dérive (drift) created by Situationist International, are emphasized, as well as authors who analyze this practices in art. The post-colonial and decolonial studies are also important marks, through its relations with contemporary art. Finally it is understood that Paulo Nazareth’s actions at analyzed expositions set important changes at flows between centers and peripheries, overcoming much of institutional interventions.

Schenkel, Camila Monteiro January 2016 (has links)
This research investigates contemporary art collectives dedicated to photography, considering their work processes and activities developed in the intersections of art, documentary photography and photojournalism. In a context characterized by the expansion of digital photography and online communication, it analyzes the reasons why an increasing number of photographers is investing on shared forms of authorship. By focusing on three collectives formed between 2003 and 2013 in the city of São Paulo, the present thesis investigates how the activities of these groups contribute to the discussions about photography, visual arts and authorship, as well as to revise the boundaries between document and fiction. It also proposes to establish connections between groups that currently work with photography and other collective practices observed in the fields of art and photography over the 20th century. If, due to its automatic genesis, photography was considered for a long time as a mere reproduction of the real, the production of these collectives indicates that the photographic image is the result of a construction process, which can be conceived, discussed and shared by different authors.

Sculpter le soi : le corps social comme dispositif de résistance, l'apparence comme poétique de survie / Styling ourselves : appearance as ways of life

Neutre, Lila 24 November 2017 (has links)
In our contemporary societies, the body has become not only an object of social fetishism but also a screen where we can take on any kind of identity. Apperance can be transformed in a playground and used as a tool to resist society's standards. From a simple choice of clothing, a look can in fact express a global lifestyle. Even if seemingly light, style can show the choice of a certain way of life and be an exit from social constraints. It can reveal existential choices, whether political, philosophical or sexual. This researches are involving different groups of people and communities. What could possibly link Congolese Sapers, Voguers, Cosplayers, Roller derby and New-Burlesque performers? A priori different, most likely antagonistic and gathering a large range of people from various ages, social classes or origins, these subcultures still share a lot of similarities. From a comparable ideology to the use of similar symbols and compatible social organizations, they all seek to re-enchant our world in a critique of cast societies and question the limits of their social imperatives. In both photography and sociology, this PhD aims at forming a kaleidoscope of various facets of self-presentation in our contemporary society, with all its hopes and disappointments.

Le roman symbolique : étude des œuvres romanesques de Sylvie Germain, Henry Bauchau et Philippe le Guillou / The symbolic novel : a study of the novelistic works of Sylvie Germain, Henry Bauchau and Philippe Le Guillou

Frackowiak, Jean-François 27 November 2015 (has links)
Through the notion of symbolism in the novel, this thesis deals with a corpus of works written by Sylvie Germain, Henry Bauchau and Philippe Le Guillou. Thanks to fictional and narrative techniques, these authors' approach belongs to a literature between the mythological novel, the initiation rite genre or the psychoanalytical approach. The notion of symbol fits into the directions mentioned above ; however, the three novelists' approach cannot be restricted to one of these notions. The symbolic novel identifies with modern and contemporary questionings about representation in writing which appears through symbolism in the novels, for figuration turns into signification and appeals interpretation : it is both construction and metamorphosis. As a consequence, in these works the world is perceived with its philosophical and spiritual dimensions that are inherent in symbolism : the one of the man in the world seen in his entirety with whom communication is possible and the one of the figuration of the invisible whether it is another dimension of reality or deep inwardness. In these works, the theme of the man confronted to what is beyond him or what escapes from his reality impacts on the poetry of the novel : it is the writing itself that expresses an appearance or an inadequation with its topic and thus reveals an empty transcendance which paradoxal figuration exists in fictional language.
