Exploring brand identity practice in video game start-ups : Industrial Marketing

Harding, Andreas January 2019 (has links)
The video game industry is a rapidly growing industry due to technology advancements andhas made video games to a mass phenomenon. The diffusion of today’s technologies has created and expanded the video game market, both demographical and geographical, which has attracted more customers and increased the intensity of the competition. Companies in the industry have to professionalize their marketing processes and business strategies in a moreflexible and quickly fashion than before to be able to stay competitive. An overcrowded market with thousands of products released every year creates problems for actors to get recognized. The purpose of this dissertation has been therefore to study small start-ups brand identity in its inception phase within the video game industry to assist their brand strategic approach and be able to strengthen their competitive advantage in a saturated market. The dissertation has adopted the corporate brand identity matrix framework by Urde (2013) and investigated the brand-driven elements in a start-up context; thus, the framework has only been applied incorporation-setting where the companies are large and known. Five indie game developers from northern Sweden participated in the study’s field research. The dissertation shows that the corporate brand identity matrix is adaptable for start-ups and are not dependent on the company size. Findings confirm early signs of brand identity and found correspondence between competence and value proposition, expression and personality and culture and relationship, which address interconnection between its brand-elements and its brand core. The unique findings where they all show signs of social engagements, passion and a fan-centric ambition of doing business and most of all everyone had a “community first” approach and were more inspired to deliver value to its customers rather than how they can achieve value for themselves. A concept model for start-ups in the inception phase of the video game industry has been made based on the empirical results of the study that can be adopted early in a company's start-up process and provide guidance and support for its future brand identity development to address the issues of discoverability.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Celia Lucia do Rosario Braz.pdf: 1126903 bytes, checksum: c664bd4050062b5734819bee8092c1e1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-10-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The current demands of our society, predicated on the aspects of information economy, culture of service and knowledge society, make the reputation one of the greatest values that an organization can have today, and can be understood as a "vote of confidence" that organization acquired. However, reputation, image and identity are a closely linked phenomena in organizations, to the extent that an identity able to create a good image in the minds of stakeholders can have a positive impact on corporate reputation. At that time, in Brazil, the private nonprofit organizations are not in a comfortable position when it comes to trust in institutions. Thus, the primary objective of this study is to clarify how the institutional identity of a social organization can influence the construction and maintenance of its corporate image and reputation, on the premise that these three concepts are interrelated. To meet this objective, we conducted a case study of qualitative and quantitative approach with the Arco Associação Beneficente, an institution of 22 years that serves children and youth with education services and social assistance. We investigated (i) its institutional identity, composed of the essential attributes of organizational identity and the way these projects are externally - corporate identity, (ii) the general impression that the general public has about the organization - its corporate image, and (iii) evaluation of key stakeholders about the institution - their corporate reputation. Among the results, are: consistency between organizational identity and corporate identity of Arco, except for formal communication factor, a high level of knowledge about the existence of the institution in the region, accompanied by a positive corporate image, and the realization of the strong influence that the institutional identity plays in building and maintaining the reputation of the entity / As atuais demandas de nossa sociedade, calcadas nos aspectos economia da informação, cultura do serviço e sociedade do conhecimento, fazem com que a reputação constitua hoje um dos maiores valores que uma organização pode possuir, podendo ser entendida como um crédito de confiança que a organização adquiriu.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-25T16:44:50Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 ADM - Camila K Colnago.pdf: 913602 bytes, checksum: 2bcc5ea6b6a7cb0a09dfc54b017900d8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-10-18 / Organizational communication, understood as a strategic element for management and administration in modern organizations, represents an important means of information flow and relationship between the inside environment of companies and their outside world: their customers, the market and society in general. Communication, as a rule, enables companies to build up their organizational culture and corporate identity and allows them to create a competitive and coherent institutional image. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the role of organizational communication in creating and maintaining a solid and strategically defined image as well as to check on how communication is currently carried out at Brazilian companies in practice. An exploratory and qualitative survey was done through applying non-standardized interviews to nonprobabilist sample, for convenience, in the cities of São Paulo - SP and Vitória - ES. On the occasion, the interviewees, who are professionals in the area of communication, described their professional experiences and practices related to the strategic utilization of organizational communication practices in forming the institutional image of their companies. The survey results showed that companies have been trying to get rid of the old concepts of vertical, instrumental and mandatory communication and that many times they have been able to establish much more participative, dialogic and strategic communication processes / A comunicação organizacional, entendida como elemento de caráter estratégico para a gestão e a administração das organizações modernas, representa um importante canal de troca de informações e relacionamento entre o ambiente interno das empresas e o mundo exterior a elas: seus públicos, o mercado e a sociedade em geral.

Corporate reputation is still consolidating as an important intangible asset for organizations. Unlike other concepts, reputation is multidisciplinary as it is the synthesis of the success factors of a company. The diversity of definitions, perspectives and methods in this field, as well as the lack of a solid body of theory surrounding this concept, highlight the need to investigate in order to add rigor to its study and application. It is for this reason that this thesis main goal is to analyze five of the most important instruments for measuring this phenomenon, in order to create a new multi-stakeholder methodology for measuring corporate reputation which enhance the benefits and exceed the drawbacks that current tools present. WHEN THE MEDIA NOISE IS TAKING OVER : How a store can make use of Guerilla marketing

Seffo, Izla, Einarsson, Rebecca, Kurtovic, Lejla January 2011 (has links)
When the media noise is taking over – How a store can make use of Guerrilla marketing Authors: Rebecca Einarsson • Lejla Kurtovic • Izla Seffo Tutor: Martin Amsteus Examiner: Frederic Bill 2FE07E Bachelor thesis in Business administration • Marketing programme School of Business and Economics atLinneaus University in Växjö • Spring 2011 Keywords: Guerrilla marketing • Generation Y • Target audience analysis • Attitudes • Brand: corporate identity and corporate image • Brand recognition Traditional marketing has been caught in a vicious circle. People have limited attention and are also limited by money, which means that consumers cannot pay attention to all advertising or buy everything. As companies invest more money on advertising it results in even more messages for people to take in and then it may be difficult for the company to get through the "noise". The consumers also tend to build up defenses against these types of traditional messages and actively avoid it, which do not make it easier for today's marketers so therefore marketers must simply find new ways to catch their attention. The purpose of this thesis is to generate knowledge regarding how a store can advertise to Generation Y by means of Guerrilla marketing. The research undertakes a qualitative data collection. Primarily a case study was undertaken and primary data for the main study was collected through an in-depth interview with the case business, and thereafter through a focus group and a survey that were based on an target audience analysis in order to understand the target audience, which in this study is limited to Generation Y.  Secondary data was collected from academic literature, scientific articles, dissertations and webpages. The theories that are researched are derived from the topics that arose from the empirical data. The findings and conclusion of the study is that Guerrilla marketing is cost-efficient, more appealing to Generation Y, enables a dialogue with the customers, increases brand recognition and recognition factor in general, but mostly it can create Buzz which can turn into Word-of-mouth communication. Guerrilla marketing is a relatively unexplored field and suggestions for further research would be to study the subject more profoundly and to create more scientific material in general. It would also be of interest to measure the response to guerilla marketing and especially to test the Guerrilla marketing suggestions that have resulted from this study on Generation Y.

NEW MARKETING TOOLS AND REPUTATIONAL RISKS : A STUDY ABOUT MANAGING THE REPUTATIONAL RISKS THAT GUERRILLA MARKETING BRINGS ALONG

De Groot, Mathijs, Hellberg, Joachim, Pitkänen, Linda January 2011 (has links)
Guerrilla marketing is a relatively new way of doing marketing. It is initially used by small companies and/or individuals allowing them to act like large companies. However, more and more large companies use Guerrilla marketing these days. The usage of Guerrilla management can bring advantages but can also increase risks. At this moment little research is done about the way how large companies manage the reputational risk associated with Guerrilla marketing. This is a problem in both science and practise. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to contribute to the understanding of how large companies manage the possible reputational risk that Guerrilla marketing and the communication of Guerrilla marketing brings along. This research is based on several theories, both emerging and dominant about Guerrilla marketing, Viral Marketing, Buzz marketing, Reputational risk and Reputational Risk Management. To do the research, in-depth interviews were held with experts when it comes to managing reputational risk and new marketing tools of four large companies based in Sweden. The analyses show that large companies manage the increasing reputational risks in some extend. Main findings are that the companies do not monitor Guerrilla marketing processes and do not have a central coordination for reputational risk management. This shows that not all companies are really aware of the risk that new marketing tools bring along and do not have a solid reputational risk management.
