The representations of the female body in The Bell Jar

Harris, Amanda January 2021 (has links)
This paper is about the representations of the female body in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar. The pure female body, the sexual female body and motherhood (the female body as a mother) are analysed through an ecofeminist perspective. The way the bodies are represented describe much more than what is on the surface, and through an ecofeminist perspective the reader can understand what is said beyond the words. The female body will also, at times, be analysed in correlation with its relationship with nature in order to understand the way the protagonist, Esther Greenwood views other female bodies. This analysis will lend itself to the reader to further understand Sylvia Plath’s protagonist and how Plath uniquely represents female bodies and the characters in charge of their female bodies.

Hur ges kroppen till världen? : En reflektion över Husserls femte Cartesianska Meditation utifrån Zahavi, Ricoeur och Waldenfels / How is the body given to the world? : A reflection on Husserl's fifth Cartesian Meditation through Zahavi, Ricoeur and Waldenfels

Wester, Joel January 2020 (has links)
In 1929, Edmund Husserl held a series of lectures at Sorbonne. These lectures were later published as a book called Cartesian Meditations: An Introduction to Phenomenology (Méditations cartésiennes: Introduction à la phénoménologie). This book has engaged philosophers, but also psychologists, ethnologists and feminists among others. Still to this day, interpreters disagrees on what Husserl actually says. This is partly because his collected works are still being edited. But it is also because Husserl doesn’t really succeed in illustrating his efforts in a comprehensible way. That is why it’s possible to deduce ambiguities. This essay will focus on one of these ambiguities, namely, the relation of the ego-alter ego or my body and the body of the Other, in Husserls fifth Cartesian Meditation. Using the knowledge of philosophers as Dan Zahavi, Paul Ricoeur and Bernhard Waldenfels, we set out to reflect around this ambiguity in how the body is defined, how the Other body is defined, and in which way the Other is synonymous with the world. Thereafter, I consider whether Zahavi, Ricoeur or Waldenfels concepts of ambiguity exposes what I rather conceive as a mutuality. Consequently, the question at issue is; How can we understand the mutual relation between body and world in Husserls fifth Cartesian Meditation?

Tělo hudby / The Body of Music

Galuška, Ondřej January 2012 (has links)
The Body of Music examines in what sense we can and must ascribe some sort of a body to music, which has traditionally been considered the most ideal and metaphysical of arts, and it seeks to analyze different aspects of corporeality in music. Its aim is to show that the body of music cannot be reduced to mere physical vibrations or simply to the condition sine qua non of musical experience. The body is always somehow active in music, it co-creates it, inspires it, it forms its significance or signifiance. Simultaneously it is itself transformed by music, it is played out in and through music. First, the body becomes apparent when we look at music as a process and activity rather than as a product. The body of a musician is that of a perpetual learner, it transforms itself, it is forced to think by itself and while "performing" music it has to breathe life into it, actualize it. Second, confronted with the process of learning and a musical instrument we come across the body of sound: something like the obstinacy of the material, irreducible to the intelligible strata of the musical sound. Sound is a complex phenomenon, whose material layer is itself productive of meaning. Third, there is the body of the listener, which is similar to that of the musician in that it too has to "perform", compose the music....

Mergulho no ser. Corpo e memória em cerimônias indígenas com Huni / Divindo into being. Body and memory in indigenous ceremonies with Huni.

Camila Silva Ribeiro 03 July 2014 (has links)
The beverage Huni (popularly called Ayahuasca) is a psychoactive plant brew from the Amazon. This infusion is known to cause modified states of perception that result in intense bodily experiences, often mystical and spiritual character. The consumption of the brew Huni has a key role in the constitution of social and cultural identity of the tribes of Pano language groups, being important in their cosmology, mythology and celebratory and healing practices. Thus , realizing the importance of the study of indigenous cultures to understanding popular ethnopsychologies, this research studied the physical manifestations within indigenous spiritual ceremonies Pano, their role in the biographical and collective memory of its participants, the preservation and propagation of memory collective, as well as conducted a documentation of physical techniques used in ceremonies . Fieldwork was conducted in ceremonies with Huni conducted by the indigenous ethnicities Yawanawá and Huni Kuin and interviews with six conductors of indigenous ceremonies, including a literature review of relevant research topic. Aspects of the organization of ceremonies were described ; description of ceremonial spaces ; conduct of ceremonies ; description of the physical techniques used in ceremonies (songs, circle dance, curing smoke, blowing, prayers), descriptions of bodily processes such as visions , cleansing , diets and developments of collective and personal memory. The analysis has contribution of psychoanalytic theory.

Such relations can be explored due to a new imaginary of the body, originated from the western society history, with the advent of Modernity, and still developed nowadays. This new imaginary goes a long way toward new religious movements known as The New Age. The so-called New Age represents a sort of fertile ground upon which new religions, from a tradition-based perspective, have steadily strengthened and established in the western part of the world, combining oriental symbols, mixing beliefs freely and promoting creativity among their followers. This is the case of Wicca, which is presented as old witchcraft merging into everyday urban elements. Wicca is closely related to a religion of corporeality because, in the same way as a New Age moviment, the body is viewed as the core of practice, and a means of social transformation Wicca aims at. Ecological, psychological and corporeal transformation, making its followers´ bodies a magical extension of nature / Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar as relações tecidas entre Corporeidade e Wicca a bruxaria moderna.

Milani, Margareth Maria January 2016 (has links)
This study investigates perceptions and conceptions of the body, gesture and piano technique and the relationship between them in the experiences of piano students on two undergraduate music courses. Drawing on the idea of corporeality, I use the concepts of musical gesture and piano technique to examine the relationships that emerge between the individual, the piano and music and are expressed in the experiences manifested by the participants. According to the notion of corporeality (MERLEAU-PONTY [1999], VAZ [2004], CHAUÍ [2011]), the individual is singular, unique and indissociable, a unity that carries symbolism and cultural and social memory and is full of nuances resulting from the cultural and social relationships established during an individual’s life, as the way we build our view of the world is linked to our body. The concept of musical gesture (JENSENIUS et al. [2010], LEMAN; GODØY [2010]) implies movement charged with intention and meaning, combining technical and interpretative aspects and allowing one to consider the relationship between musical score, pianist and piano in terms of the individuality of each subject expressed in the organization of unique movements. The concepts of piano technique (CHIANTORE [2001]; SANDOR [1981]; KAEMPER [1967]; WHITESIDE [1955]; JAËLL [1904]) mentioned in this work all share ideas based on movement. Eight students from the following two music programs at two higher-education institutions took part in this study: the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Music/Piano, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, UFRGS, and the Degree Program in Instrumental Music/Piano, School of Music and Fine Arts, EMBAP/UNESPAR, Paraná State University, Campus I, Curitiba. The study was a qualitative one, and data were collected in videos filmed during the study, in a semi-structured interview that addressed self-feeling in the performance and self-seeing in the performance (when participants appreciated their own recorded performances) and in a phenomenological interview covering the three main themes in the study: piano technique, body and musical gesture. The data analysis and interpretation was based on the three steps of the phenomenological method: phenomenological description, phenomenological reduction and phenomenological interpretation.
