Critical factors for project success in an engineering environment / Francois VorsterVorster, Francois January 2008 (has links)
Not every project deserving of success achieves it. Conversely, not every project heading for the scrap heap arrives. The journey to project success is long and hard and does not happen overnight. To understand the journey to project success we need to understand what makes a project successful. A successful project can be classified as a Project of which the costs did not exceed 25% of the agreed capital approved with a less than 25% schedule slip and with all the operational problems being sorted out in less than a year. Project success potential, can be increased by focusing on the critical factors listed in this study, namely: Project Front End Loading (FEL), high calibre project teams, and people skills/soft skills of project management. The success of a project can be increased when the project has high calibre project teams starting the project with very effective Front End Loading (FEL) and keep project team members continuity based on the fact that the project is managed by a project manager understanding people who have the soft skill to lead and influence the project team, rather than managing the team. The research was conducted by means of a literature and empirical study. The literature study documents the critical factors for project success. Knowledge gained from the literature study formed the basis for the empirical study to test critical factors for project success in practice and the recommendations can be read in chapter four. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2009.

The current essay presents a case study on the critical factors for collaborative product development on Latin American SME’s of the professional audio segment. It is justified by the economic relevance of SME’s in Brazil, the difficulties they find to innovate, and the lack of studies regarding open innovation and new product development in the context of these organizations. Its main objective was to identify the critical factors on collaborative new product development, verify the adherence of the companies being studied to them, e identify the existing gaps. To achieve this goal, firstly, a review of the literature was made, and was able to identify the best practices in new product development, and the critical factors for collaboration in this process. Secondly, through a documentary research, observation, and semi-structured interviews, data from a Brazilian and an Argentine company was gathered. The analysis of this data allowed the identification of the existing gaps between their structures, processes and practices, and those recommended for successful collaborative new product development. Through this study, it was possible to verify that the main critical factors are power or size of the companies, mutual gains, motivations and strategic objectives, trust, communication, culture, teams, NPD processes, control and support from management, and past experiences. It has been found that the main gaps in these organizations are on the team composition, NPD processes informality, lack of control, and lack of past experiences

The maintenance activity is equipment and facilities, is a routine function in most large companies. However, with the growth of automation and mechanization, aspects such as reliability and availability have become key points in terms of competitiveness. This is partly because of the possible shutdown of operations have an impact on costs, the quality and reliability of products and services. Apart from that, the advent of increasingly charging for quality in the execution of services in general and public transport in particular. Similarly, this search for competitiveness precedes a constant search for better levels of efficiency, whether in public or private company. This study, in particular, aims to propose an identification model of the Critical Success Factors (CSF) of the company's maintenance management system Urban Train of Porto Alegre SA (Trensurb) in order to reduce the impact of the performance of maintenance activity on the company's business performance. Even in the sphere of goals, this research built the systemic structure that reflects the model management system Maintenance of Trensurb, allowing us to understand how the variables involved in this context interrelate from Systems Thinking. Still build archetypes that reflect the reality of the modus operandi of the maintenance management of Trensurb system. Finally, it analyzes the structure constructed to identify the FCS - Critical Success Factors (CSF) maintenance management system through Systems Thinking. As identified through the Systems Thinking (PS) that this model serves as an alternative to the usual models of analysis of maintenance management. With the use of qualitative methods, raises a series of relationships between the numerous variables in the performance of maintenance management system. As a result it was possible to identify the area of operation of outsourced maintenance staff, the hiring mix model's own x outsourced maintenance, operational availability, and MKBF - Mean Kilometer Between Failures, correspond to system Success Factors Critical maintenance management of Trensurb. Furthermore, the construction of sustainable maintenance Triad was possible. Being conducted following the precepts of a case study, the research progresses on the critical success factors field of study, not limited to display only a specific approach, but evolves through proposal of a survey methodology for Critical Success Factors with use of Systems Thinking

Assessment of corporate governance practices in Jordan : an empirical investigationHendawi, Raed Diab Moh'd January 2013 (has links)
Corporate Governance (CG) nowadays is on the agenda of most developed and developing countries, including Jordan, and is receiving considerable attention in the business world as well as in the area of academic research, which is an indication of its importance for business development and society as a whole. The knowledge base about CG in developing countries appears to be limited, but it is growing in size and importance. This study therefore aims to investigate current CG practices and barriers to the development of good CG practices in firms. In order to accomplish the research objectives, a mixed research methodology was adopted. The findings of the study contribute to knowledge by providing empirical data to test and extend the theory of CG. The results suggest that most big and old firms are applying best practice of good CG. Regarding factors inhibiting the practice of effective CG, the results indicate that weakness of the legal environment for firms and lack of knowledge of BODs about CG principles are the most important factors. The empirical results find that constitution, compliance and conscience will affect firm’s performance positively. Separation between the position of CEO and Chairman, the existence of independent NEDs, the use of board subcommittees and a strong disclosure regime also help firms to improve performance. On the basis of the empirical results, the study recommends that the government needs to reform the relevant legislation. These suggestions may strengthen the internal governance of firms, thereby increasing performance and maximise shareholders’ wealth.

金融業與網路科技業導入巨量資料系統的關鍵因素之個案研究 / Case Studies of Key Factors for implementing Big Data system on Financial and Internet Technology Industries陳冠廷, Chen, Kuan Ting Unknown Date (has links)
With the popularity of internet, smart phones and Internet of Things begin to emerge. According to Institute for Information Industry, there are approximately 49.5% of smart devices in Taiwan, which mean every two people will own at least one smart device. In addition, more devices are connected to the internet. Therefore, tremendous amount of data is created and increased exponentially. With applicable and correct techniques, Big Data can provide valuable insight and business intelligent. Traditional industries are forced to change. For example, Uber is one innovative idea that changes the ways people ride taxi. Riding taxi become more efficient and effective with Uber.
This research explores critical factors of Big Data implementation on financial and internet technology industries from three perspectives. This includes key processes of the Big Data implementation, enterprises factors, and the Big Data system. Moreover, literature review was conducted to. In addition, three case studies were interviewed and analyzed based on research framework. Lastly, three research questions are answered. First, what are the key process for financial and internet technology industries implementing the Big Data system? Second, what are the critical factors for financial and internet technology industries implementing the Big Data system? Third, what are the potential benefits after the Big Data implementation?
The research findings are primarily categorized into two parts. First, there are three phases of financial institution and internet technology industries implementing the Big Data system. The three phases included defining, brainstorming and implementation phases. The three phases are described below:
1. Defining Phase: Companies will first define their own interpretation of Big Data in order to plan and coordinated their implementation.
2. Brainstorming Phase: Companies averagely spent most of the time in this phase. The implementation team leads must brainstorm to find the best way to enforce and carry out the Big Data project by searching, organizing and surveying internal and externally.
3. Implementation Phase: Companies follow their previous made proposal steps by steps.
This research also concluded and found several critical factors during the Big Data implementation. The critical factors included but not limited to:
1. An implementation team regardless the size to carry out the Big Data project
2. Top management’s commitment on implementation
3. Timing on the implementation
4. Big Data system selection
5. Clear goals and objectives

The complexity is an intrinsic component that pervades the processes undertaken in the internal and external environment of an organization. The organizations are embedded in environments that, by nature, are made up of knowledge and intelligence. In this perspective, in developing their activities, they generate new knowledge that, in turn, are directly influenced by complexity. In some organizational environments, it is observe that complexity is inherent to the processes developed, the results obtained and, in some cases, both situations. In the context of complex organizations, we can highlight colleges, football clubs, industries, retail companies and class entities that, due to their own structure and management model, are organizations that possess and use knowledge and intelligence in all activities and Tasks performed. There is a recurrent discussion in the literature about the latent need for increase of competitiveness, through the efficient management of data, information, knowledge and intelligence. Under this approach, the research in question analyzed the critical aspects regarding the application of information, knowledge and intelligence management in complex organizations. In order to do so, it analyzed the theoretical reference referring to the themes complexity, intelligence and knowledge in seven models of knowledge management and seven models focused on the process of intelligence. The method used was the 'Multiple Case Study', in which the data triangulation technique was applied to obtain an expanded view of the problem investigated. For the data collection, the direct observation was used, responsible for collecting information about culture, communication, history and other important aspects in the context of the organization, the structured interview and the questionnaire. The structured interview was applied with the main subject at the organizational level. The questionnaire was applied to employees at each organizational level (strategic, tactical and operational). The analyzes were performed from the organizational levels individually in each organization and, later, at a macro level with each organization. After an individual analysis and the differents levels of the participating organizations, the results showed important aspects of organizations and their hierarchical levels regarding the use of sources and flows of knowledge and intelligence in the internal and external environment, perception of information, knowledge and intelligences in a procedural way to the demand of its application. Regarding the theoretical issues, in what concerns the critical aspects of knowledge management and intelligence aligned to the information collected, it was possible to construct a conceptual model that integrates steps and activities focused on these themes for complex organizations. Complex organizations, based on the developed model, can work on the implementation, development and management of knowledge and intelligence in their organizational processes. Some strategies have been suggested that can minimize the impact of the possible implementation of the integrated model of knowledge management and intelligence. / Programa PDS: 99999.008196/2014-01

Previous issue date: 2012-02-27 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / The organizations face problematic situations that involve the analysis of a significant number of correlated variables to reduce the variability of production processes. There are many approaches, methods and techniques to support problem solving, however has achieved distinction in literature and adopted by Six Sigma companies, one of whose goals is to identify and eliminate the causes of variation in product and process through the use of techniques statistics. The Multivariate Data Analysis (MDAs) belongs to a set of techniques that examine both the relationship between several variables, have not been included in intensive training programs in Six Sigma. This research is qualitative and descriptive, whose purpose is to confirm the dimensions criticism from Firka (2011) and Montgomery (2010) agree that the use of statistical methods to problems of manufacturing in the context of Six Sigma programs, through the study of multiple cases. These research findings confirm the association between the use of technical barriers in the MDAs to factors of management and sociology, such as the lack of management support, focus on short-term results, the methodological factors (selection and validation of variables and results) and the statistical assumptions (multivariate normality, multicollinearity and homoscedasticity).
