A Marginal Hero: The Representations of Diomedes in the Greek WorldMedeiros, Telmo C. 10 1900 (has links)

The epic hero Diomedes is, in my opinion, considered a marginal hero, as he is relegated to a backbench in ancient Greek thought and ideology. I examine why this is the case, considering his role and impact in Homer's Iliad. Greek society valued its epic heroes beyond the words of the poets, yet some heroes received much more attention that others as central characters in tragedy and iconography, consequently regarded as favourites by mass audiences. I believe that examining a marginal hero like Diomedes is important in order to understand why Greek culture generally disregarded some warriors in favour of others, especially in the case of Diomedes, who displays heroic virtues more evidently than several other heroes who have received more attention. Overall Greek attitudes toward him offer an intriguing perspective on the epic heroes and the ways in which the Greeks idealized them. An examination of Greek literary, visual, and religious spheres of influence effectively aid in determining the reasons behind this phenomenon. In summary, this work attempts to understand Greek attitudes towards a hero who has received very little scholarly attention. The concept of the epic hero requires analysis of even the most neglected characters; one cannot understand Odysseus, Achilles, or Hector without examining Diomedes, who has a notable role in the very same tradition as the aforementioned heroes.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Reigns of Hattušili III, Puduhepa and their son, Tudhaliya IV, ca 1267-1228 BCEVan der Ryst, Anna Francina Elizabeth 11 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigate the impact of the extended religious and political elements in the ancient Near East of the Late Bronze period that influenced the reigns of Hattušili III, his consort, Queen Puduhepa, circa 1267 to 1237 BCE and their son Tudhaliya IV circa 1237 to 1228 BCE. As rulers of the Hittites, they were not the greatest and most influential royals, like the great Suppiluliuma I circa 1322 to 1344 BCE, but their ability to adopt an eclectic approach similar to that of their great predecessors regarding religion, politics, international diplomacy and signing treaties made this royal triad a force to be reckoned with in the ancient Near East. Therefore, central to this investigation will be the impact of Hattušili III’s usurpation of the throne and Puduhepa’s role in the Hurrianisation of the state cult and pantheon. Also included is a brief investigation into the continuation of the reorganisation and restructuring of the Hittite state cult and local cult inventories by Tudhaliya IV and his mother Puduhepa after the death of Hattušilli III. By researching this royal triad, their deities, their Hurro-Hittite culture and the textual evidence of their rule, it becomes possible to assemble some of the elements that impacted on their rule. I have used available transliterated translated texts and pictures to support and illustrate the investigation of this complex final period in the history of the Hittite Empire. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / MA (Ancient Near Eastern Studies)

Allah oder Christus? Eine missiologische fallstudie uber die grunde der hinwendungen der kyrgyzen zum Islam und Christentum / Allah or Christ ? a missiological case study analysing the reason for conversions to Islam and Christianity among Kyrgyz peopleZweininger, Jakob 02 1900 (has links)
Summaries in German and English / This thesis is a missiological case study analysing the reasons for conversions to Islam and
Christianity among Kyrgyz people in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz people have a rich religious heritage with a history of more than 2,200
years. The uprooting of religion and the atheistic indoctrination by the Soviet government
created a religious vacuum after the breakdown of the Soviet Union and caused a revival of
religious receptivity in the society.
Renewed receptivity to religion in the newly established sovereign Kyrgyzstan was
followed by a rise in religious activity of Muslims and Christians beginning in the late 20th
century. In only 15 years the number of mosques rose from 39 to 1,600 and the number of
professing Christians increased from a few dozen to more than 7,000. This change between
1990 and 2005 developed in three stages through religious instability, an increase in
missionary activity and the posturing of religious ideology during the government’s
democratization process.
A research of individual conversions produced complex results. Muslims were more
attune to traditional religious thinking than were Christians. Most Muslims committed themselves
to Islam because of their ancestral heritage. The secularization of society facilitated the
Kyrgyz to convert to Christianity and turn to Christ due to a crisis in personal identity.
Among Christians, conversions were primarily affected by relatives and friends persuading
them through testimony and example. Most Kyrgyz becoming Muslims were significantly
influenced by their parents. Faith in the existence of God was the basic prerequisite for both
Muslim and Christian commitment to their respective beliefs. For Muslims it meant to obey
the commandments of Allah, but Christians were led to confession of sins and to conversion.
Changes in lifestyles and mindsets Muslims traced back to the Islamic religious tradition. For
Christians, lives were affected through a relationship to Jesus Christ.

The work deals with the motif of a woman in the works of Jakub Deml. It starts by presenting some necessary facts and events of his life. In the main part, it tries to identify the basic archetypes of feminity in Deml's works, focusing especially on the Marian Cult, that strongly influences the transformation of living persons into supra-personal and symbolical ones. In the final analysis, the question of whether the motives of archetypal women are really dominating or whether they just mirror the poet's spiritual search and fight is adressed.
