J. -C.) / Researches on the Rituals of Heroization in the Greek World (from the Archaic Period to the Third Century AD).

Carvalho, Paulo 17 September 2013 (has links)
If the heroes of Greek mythology are particularly well known historical figures themselves, are much less. Yet the phenomenon known as heroization concerned many characters. This study proposes to examine these characters for whom the historical existence is proven, and who had been assigned the status of heroes and thus accessing to the divine sphere benefited honors but also cults. This study also aims to understand all of these rites in connection with the hero and heroization. It also presents the evolution knew by this phenomenon during the period from the Archaic period to the third century AD. But also highlights the differences and similarities between the different regions and cities that composed the entire Greek world. This study also tries to learn more about the identity of these characters, who, for many of them remain unknown of the "great history." Yet these characters deserve special attention because their study singularly clarifies and provides a much better understanding of the religious life of the ancient Greeks.

"Jess-who-wasn't-Jess" : Double Consciousness and Identity Construction in Helen Oyeyemi's The Icarus Girl

Lundell, Åse January 2010 (has links)
Abstract During the last decade many female writers of British decent have focused on identity construction and coming of age. These writers have been especially interested in exploring how people living in the diaspora are trying to cope with their ambivalent feelings towards their mixed cultural heritage. Helen Oyeyemi's The Icarus Girl is one of these novels. The novel depicts a young girl's struggle with the dualism within her, being both British and Nigerian, that threatens to dissolve her self-identity. This essay will explore how The Icarus Girl deals with the theme “double consciousness” (imposed binaries) and how the narrative's structure and stylistic devices enable the story to be read (interpreted) from two different perspectives, thus the narrative's structure offers an ambiguous double reading that corresponds to Jessamy's unresolved doubleness. The first reading suggests that the traumatic experience of “double consciousness“ is left in a status quo, or even being fatal, which in the essay is called the Western reading. The second reading suggests a recovery, i.e. that the young protagonist comes to terms with her mixed cultural heritage, the so-called West-African reading. In pursuing this aim I discuss how “double consciousness” in this novel is a traumatic state of mind transferred from mother to daughter, but also how stylistic devices, belonging to the genre of the fantastic, are used to emphasize the theme and make possible the two different readings.

Analýza a komparace ženských postav v amerických románech Jamese Fenimora Coopera a Luise May Alcottové / Analysis and comparison of female characters in American novels of James Fenimore Cooper and Louise May Alcott

Cibulková, Tereza January 2016 (has links)
This thesis is focused on the representation and characterization of female characters in the novel The Deerslayer from The Leatherstocking Tales pentalogy from James Fenimore Cooper in contrast to the concept of female characters in the book from Louisa May Alcott Little Women. There is analyzed images of female fictional heroines living in the American wilderness in the years 1740-1805, and these findings are compared with the representation of women in the 19th century domestic novel Little Women. The way of creating female characters is analyzed in relation to the other characters, the space in which they live, the storyline and contemporary values. This analysis should in a literary historical aspect reveal how much the role of a woman becomes a mere fulfillment of a simplified scheme and how it also has many meanings of full-fledged components in literary work. The author of this thesis also focuses on the influence of the environment on the formation of female characters and tracks their role not only in American novels but also in the society. Key words woman, gender, novel, cult of True Womenhood, James Fenimore Cooper, Louise May Alcott, topoi of the forest, home, american wildernes

Corriveau, Jean-Matthieu 12 1900 (has links)
Constantine, with his seize of power in the early fourth century, has allowed the growth of a new form of devotion dedicated to the men and women tormented because of their beliefs in Christ and his Holy Father. Thereby, Lawrence, persecuted in 258 A.D. in Rome, has become the main figure of martyrdom in the Eternal City during the following century. This master's thesis aims at comprehending how the cult of Lawrence's unfolded and why it became the predominant martyr cult in the Roman capital. By studying literary and epigraphic sources, especially Damasus, Ambrose, Augustine and Prudence, as well as the archaeological data on the construction of the churches dedicated to Lawrence, we came to the conclusion that the Roman martyr helped establish a Christian collective memory corresponding to the identity needs of the Urbs in this period characterized by the passage of a "pagan" empire to a Christian empire. This creation of a collective memory is based on the sacralisation of the roman territory by the emperor Constantine and the roman bishop Damasus, on the introduction of new rituals and on the instrumentation of Lawrence and the cult of the saints by the ancient writers in their elaboration of a Christian identity for the city of Rome.

Les travertins anthropiques, entre histoire, archéologie et environnement : étude geoarchéologique du site antique de Jebel Oust (Tunisie) / Anthropogenic travertime, between history, archaeology and environment : a geoarchaeological study of the Roman site of Jebel Oust, Tunisia

Curie, Julien 22 November 2013 (has links)
Travertine, known as lapis tiburtinus during Roman times, are continental limestones precipitated in calcareous environments from thermal waters of hot springs (travertine) or cool waters of karstic springs (calcareous tufa). This phenomenon is well-known during Classical Antiquity and had been described by several ancient authors (Strabo, Pliny the Elder, Vitruvius) who depicted a stone that forms extremely rapidly, a stone that outlines the landscape and which is largely used for construction (e.g. The Colosseum in Roma, the Greek temple at Segesta in Sicily). These deposits are widespread on Earth’s surface showing various morphologies and are great sedimentary records of climatic and hydrologic conditions. Thus they represent valuable proxies for palaeoenvironmental studies. The notion of anthropogenic travertine takes into consideration human impact on these deposits and on travertine-depositing waters. It is documented by the study of the roman site of Jebel Oust, Tunisia, where the exploitation of a hot spring is attested from the first century A.D. to the end of Late Antiquity. The site is characterized by a temple settled around the spring’s vent associated with Roman baths located downstream and supplied with hot water via an aqueduct. Our geoarchaeological approach brings to light the anthropization of the regional geosystem expressed by an entire control over the hot spring and its associated deposits. Furthermore the study of travertines preserved in the archaeological structures reveals precious and original information about water cult and bathing practices during Antiquity (thermal rooms function, water management, repair phases, states of neglect and decay). Moreover, geoarchaeology of anthropogenic travertine intends to offer a new approach of research‘s problematic dealing with water managements and integrating human impact on travertine’s development.

Khazoom, Frédérique 12 1900 (has links)
During the 2000s, the American televisual landscape was deeply shaken by the arrival of the Internet. The quick growth of digital technologies and the emergence of new types of media forced a reluctant television industry to change; be that in production, creation or reception. This transition from a pre-digital to a digital form of television was particularly difficult for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). In the midst of this defining moment in American television history came Community (NBC, 2009-2014; Yahoo!Screen, 2015), a sitcom that embodied and reflected the various transformations brought by the convergence of the Internet and television, as well as the consequences this confluence bore to that industry. From being broadcast on NBC’s Must-See TV lineup between 2009 and 2014 to then moving to Yahoo!’s online platform in 2015, Community’s journey in television revealed its multiple attempts at adapting to a media in mutation. Therefore, the inability of the series to survive an unstable television industry through both traditional and online means underlines the complexity pertaining to television’s transition to a digital era.

Religiose Ansprechbarkeit der Post-Sowjetischen Kirgisen : eine sozio-missiologische Fallstudie des Bekehrungsprozesses der zum Christentum konvertierten Kirgisen / Religious accountability of post-Soviet Kyrgyz people: a socio-missiological case study of the conversion process to Christianity of proselyt Kyrgyz people

Zweininger, Jakob 91 1900 (has links)
The Kyrgyz are a Mongolian, Turkic ethno-linguistic people group. The political and social changes of the post-soviet times have led to a great religious openness among the Kyrgyz. Within one decade the nunber of Kyrgyz Christians has grown from few dozens to over 3000. The intention of this work was to analyze the conversion process of the Kyrgyz converts to Christianity and to apply the results to further missiological activity. The religious background of the Kyrgyz, which is heavily influenced by Folk Islam, was presented in the first chapter of the paper. In the second chapter, interviews collected from Kyrgyz Christians were evaluated. The third chapter summarizes the most important findings of the work and makes them applicable for missionary work. The precise knowledge of the religious background of the Kyrgyz and intercultural communication that it is based upon it can essentially dismantle barriers for the acceptance of the gospel. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Les représentations de Jeanne d'Arc à Rouen, en particulier à travers la collection de Camille Vallery-Radot / Portrayal of Joan of Arc in Rouen, especially through Camille Vallery Radot's personal collection

Silighini, Réjane 11 December 2017 (has links)
By the end of the 19th century, Joan of Arc became one of the key character, shaped and raised as a symbol, she is at the core of political stakes. The Camille Vallery Radot's collection fits this context. She was born in 1880 and was contemporary of that period. She became passionate about Joan of Arc at the early age to her death in 1927. She collected everything she can find about her heroin, in total around 10 000 documents. This collection is a certain contemporary viewpoint, even exhaustive, of the period which will gradually built the Pucelle d’Orléans to a strong mother country symbol. Her collection witnesses the creation of myth and cult of Joan of Arc for the entire French population to become a product to rising tourism. Joan of Arc becomes the mainspring of cultural politics which arise at that time. In Rouen, preservation and development of patrimony linked to the heroin is deep in the heart of the procedures that leads not only to a commemoration, but also to a challenge of attractiveness issue.
