The Italian immigration to Brazil, between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th centuries, represented one of the most important historical chapters of socio-spatial formation in the country. In the contemporary period the places where these immigrants settled are marked by the presence of material and immaterial goods that represent this identity cultural. Objects, knowledge and practices that constitute content which strengthen the linkages of belonging to memory and Italian traditions-descendants in the present. Are exactly for these materiality both, practices and knowledge remains that look of this work rests. Legacies of great historical and social value who resisted to changes in time and space and therefore considered cultural heritage today, not only for being safeguarded by protective instruments, but by receiving recognition for its historic and social importance. At present, the global economic dynamics imposes on the socio-spatial complexity new demands for use and operation of places, modifying some everyday social practices, including, the way of thinking the materiality and the symbolic representations of diverse cultures. This means that the set of objects, customs and traditions tend to win new uses to meet the changes in socio-spatial dynamics, process in which there is the embodiment of the market value of the cultural value, process evidenced by means of the tourist circuits Italian descendants. In such a process, figure tourism as an activity that increases the household income, while contributing to the preservation of material goods and symbolic contents of culture, since the use of cultural heritage tourism ensures its continuity in time and space. Thus, this work is proposed to analyze the current representation of the cultural identity of the descendants of Italian immigrants in the States of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Espírito Santo, taking as a reference the refuncionalization processes of cultural property Italian descendants, guided by public policies of territorial planning, as well as by economic strategies of tourist valorization of the culture / Doutorado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Doutor em Geografia

Promouvoir les singularités locales : politiques de l'authenticité et usages sociaux du patrimoine en Couserans, Ariège / The promotion of local singularity : policies of authenticity and social uses of rural heritage in Ariège, Couserans

Chandivert, Arnauld 21 January 2010 (has links)
This thesis seeks to analyse a series of issues pertaining to social uses of folklore, traditions and rural heritage. Based on historical materials and an ethnographic fieldwork undertaken in the Couserans, a small “pays” located in the western part of the French (department of the Ariège, in the central Pyrenees), the analysis focuses on the economic and political dimensions of “policies of authenticity”, promoting local singularities. First, the thesis investigates historical issues: the genesis of social representations of this “pays”, in having a look to the part played by nineteen century’s folklorists in the institutionalisation of these images, the political uses of folklore and tradition under the Vichy gouvernment and the consequences of such uses after the Second World War. The analysis focuses then on the relations between two main aspects of contemporary process. First, I begin by describing the “rural tradition renewal” wich can be observed in this part of the Pyrenees during the 1990s. I stress on the fact that the aim of such renewal practices was the valorisation of rural heritage and the promotion of “local authenticity”. In the same time, this aim was directly integrated in contemporary public policies towards rural development, especially with the creation of new territorial development public structures, the pays, created by the “Voynet” act in 1999. After the creation of such a pays in Couserans, the use of rural heritage as a key tool for social and economic development will enhance the construction of images of authenticity and the transformation of the socio-economic functions of the territory.

Echoes of Home: The Diasporic Performer and the Quest for "Armenianness"

Turabian, Michael January 2012 (has links)
Current scholarship recognizes that music is a powerful channel that can manifest individual identity. But such research takes for granted music as a symbol of collective cultural identity, and, therefore, neglects examining how music in general, but musical performance in particular, functions to produce and reproduce a society at large. Indeed, what is missing is a rigorous understanding of not only how the act of performing forms collective identity, but also how it acts as an agency, indeed, perhaps the only agency that enables this process. As Thomas Turino suggests, externalized musical practice can facilitate the creation of emergent cultural identities, and help in forming life in new cultural surroundings. The present thesis examines the dynamics between cultural identity and music from the perspective of the performing musician. By examining musical situations in the context of the Armenian – Canadian diaspora, I will show how performers themselves both evoke feelings of nostalgia for the homeland and maintain the traditions of their culture through the performance event, while simultaneously serving as cultural ambassadors for the Armenian – Canadian community. My thesis outlines four key themes that are crucial in understanding the roles of musicians in Armenian culture. They are tradition bearer, educator, cultural ambassador, and artisan. As boundaries between peoples and nations progressively blur, I conclude that performance proves a vital medium where a search for national identity can occur, frequently resulting in the realization of one’s ethnic identity. Ultimately, without the labors of the performing musician, music would be unable to do the social work that is necessary in forming cultural, social, or even personal identities.

No place to call home: Cultural homelessness, self-esteem and cross-cultural identities.

Hoersting, Raquel Carvalho 05 1900 (has links)
The study examined relations between a cross-cultural geographically mobile childhood and adult cultural identity, attachment to cross-cultural identities (CCIs) and self-esteem. CCIs are loosely defined identities (e.g., third culture kids [TCKs], military brats, missionary kids) that describe some individuals' childhood cross-cultural experience. The 475 participants spent at least two years before age 18 in a culture different from their parents' and completed an online survey including childhood cross-cultural experiences, Cultural Homelessness Criteria, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Self Label Identity Measure (SLIM) that captured strength of affirmation, belonging and commitment to any CCI. Cultural homelessness (CH) was related to lower self-esteem; higher SLIM scores was related to higher self-esteem and lower CH. TCKs reported lower self-esteem than non-TCKs and older participants experienced less CH and higher self-esteem. SLIM scores buffered the CH-self-esteem relationship, whereas a TCK CCI and having more cross-culturally experienced social networks did not.

Global vs. Local – Marketing and Advertising Strategies to Promote ‘Brand’ Kuwait

Alsabt, Danah 01 September 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine the development and promotion of local brands in Kuwait, to understand the cultural practices used to create their branding, and how they compete with global brands within the competitive marketplace. Specifically, the study looks into the brands of Kuwait and the need to be self-reliant and self-sufficient to generate incomes within the country and achieve national competency. The Western brands influence the local brands and sometimes squashing them by transitioning from global to local brands. The Covid-19 has also sparked the need for supporting local brands and the national economy, as evident in the way countries are gradually transitioning their business practices. Therefore, the author provides an understanding of how locals use the cultural identity theory for their owned brands and shift the perception of consumers to try, use, and support local brands. Furthermore, the author analyzes the digital marketing strategies applied by local and global brands in achieving effective communications by promoting their brand image to Kuwait and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

- Hej! Jag är lite early! : En vetenskaplig essä om kommunikation och samarbete mellan förskola och hem med svenska som andraspråk

Moberg, Peggy-sue January 2020 (has links)
This scientific essay is about communication and collaboration between the preschool and a home with Swedish as a second language and has its foundation based on two dilemmas. The first dilemma describes a parent-teacher conference that I have with a guardian who has Swedish as their second language. In the conversation, I feel that the communication is failing, even though I get help from an interpreter. The second dilemma is also about a conversation with a guardian who has Swedish as their second language, but this conversation takes place more spontaneously. The second conversation also leads to misunderstanding as communication between us fails. My aim with this essay is to investigate how communication affects the collaboration between the preschool and home. As well as whether the language has any significance for communication and how it affects the children's right to influence and participation in the preschool. The method I use in the degree project is essay writing as I reflect on my role as a teacher and try to understand my thoughts from the guardians' perspectives. I reflect on my issues that have emerged from my designs with the help of the socio-cultural and intercultural perspective and other relevant literature. This essay has made me reflect on my cultural identity, both in my professional role and as an individual, and how I use my experiences in social contexts. My hope for this essay is to increase my understanding of others' perspectives more than I have experienced before.

Examining Psychotherapeutic Treatment Approach Preference in a Hispanic Population

DeBarros, Andrea Mayra Vieira 09 December 2020 (has links)
Minority groups are at a disadvantage when seeking psychological treatment. Interventions are often less effective for minority populations when treatment outcomes are compared to Anglo populations. Studies indicate that the stigma associated with mental health disorders and seeking psychological intervention within these minority subgroups may be at fault for this disparity. In this study, we explored this idea by examining what methods of intervention Hispanic-identified individuals are more likely to seek out. Participants were given the option to enlist in a biofeedback approach to intervention as well as a supportive talk psychotherapy. Participants were drawn from the community population in Utah County via Mountainlands Community Health Center. Before taking part in the study, they were asked to indicate their cultural identity based on a series of criteria as well as their perceived stigma associated with mental health interventions. Lastly, participants completed exit interviews to quantitatively explore their reasoning for choosing the treatment approach they did, what they liked about their approach, and why they did not choose the other approach. The data collected was analyzed using a modified approach to consensual qualitative research methods.

Reel versus Real: Interracial Relationships within the South Asian Diaspora

Unknown Date (has links)
This study analyzes the reactions of interracial relationships within the South Asian Diaspora via film and literature focused on the United States and England. The films examined are Mississippi Masala (1992) and Bend It Like Beckham (2002), and the literature-utilized focuses on cultural identity, interracial dating, the importance of marriage, the Indian community, and gender roles focused on women within the diaspora. The films used encourage the idea of interracial relationships as acceptable and give South Asian women the confidence to be more independent. The intention of this research is to analyze the importance of cultural blending, independence, heritage, and traditional values. The focus behind this research is to understand the battle of traditional versus modern roles for women in the South Asian diaspora, and how independence can be viewed as a form of dishonoring and humiliating their families when they step outside of the cultural box. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
