Performing Mother and Daughter : A Postdramatic Performance Analysis of Three Contemporary Theatre Productions

Sandberg Hensch, Elin January 2023 (has links)
This master’s thesis is concerned with the portrayal of motherhood and mother-daughter relationships on stage. By conducting performance analyses of three separate contemporary performances, all focused on mother-daughter relationships, the thesis investigates the creation of mother and daughter on stage. Through the lens of Hans-Thies Lehmann’s theory on postdramatic theatre, the thesis dissects aspects of the performances moving beyond the dramatic action to gain further insight into the portrayal of mother and daughter on stage. The thesis aims to investigate the aspects contributing to the creation of mother and daughter on stage, as well as analyse the conveyed meaning of the relationship between them. Combined with a feminist approach, the role of mother and daughter on stage is placed in a larger context, analysing motherhood as an institution and concept, both on and off stage. By understanding the intimate and complex mother-daughter relationship as a product of patriarchal structure, it becomes necessary and relevant to investigate this relationship further. Since the performances portray private relationships in a public space, the analysis is also concerned with the interrelation between the stage and the outside world. The analysed performances are Und dann kam Mirna at the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, Kung Mor at Teater Galeasen in Stockholm and Mommy Issues at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in Stockholm. The material for the thesis mainly consists of my experiences of the performances in the role of spectator and the theatre texts. By using Lehmann’s theory as a starting point, the analyses are centred around moving beyond the narrative to investigate other aspects on stage, such as objects, physicality, levels of reality, intertextuality, intermediality and the use of text on stage. The thesis dissects how these aspects contribute to the creation of mother and daughter on stage, as well as analyses the portrayed generational differences and their impact on the mother-daughter relationship in the performances. The analyses place the portrayed mothers and daughters into a larger context, by including concepts such as performativity and the male gaze. The thesis shows how the portrayal of motherhood and mother-daughter relationships on stage can be created by reaching beyond a narrative or a desired understandability. Together, the three performance analyses contribute with concluding insights into the internal logic and structures of the performances.

Once Upon a Time in a Single-Parent Family: Father and Daughter Relationships in Disney's The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast

Sharp, Ashli A. 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Fairy tales are adapted to fit the needs of each generation, reflecting the unique challenges of that society. In the 1980s and 1990s of the United States, issues of what constituted a family circulated as divorce increased and fatherhood was debated. At this time, Disney released two animated films featuring a father and daughter: The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. Both films are adaptations of fairy tales, and they incorporate changes that specifically reflect concerns of the United States in the late-twentieth century. In the original narrative of "The Little Mermaid" the heroine is primarily raised by her grandmother and wants an immortal soul more than the love of the prince. The tale ends with her death and expectation that after 300 years of service, she can obtain an immortal soul. Disney changes the story, however, by removing the grandmother and placing Triton at the head of the family. His overbearing nature pushes Ariel away as she struggles to gain her independence and win Eric's love. Before the story concludes, Triton, Ariel, and Eric work together to defeat the sea witch and achieve the film's happy ending--the creation of a traditional family. The fairy tale of "Beauty and the Beast" begins with a father who is educated, respected, and wealthy before hardship strikes. Beauty's request for a rose is what starts the adventure as she must learn to love the Beast to save him from an enchanted curse. Disney's alterations to the narrative make Maurice an ineffectual father whose inadequacies bring Belle to the Beast's castle, and the modified curse on the Beast makes both him and Belle need to fall in love, founding their relationship on equality. The tale concludes with the jubilant hope that the couple will form a family together. Both animated features proved popular with the public, suggesting that the films' resolutions are considered desirable endings. The films can then be interpreted as expressing the hope that from the single-parent homes of the late-twentieth century, a new generation of stronger nuclear families can arise if these homes base their relationships on unified efforts and equal partnerships.

The master's thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusion, list of references (62 sources) and an Appendix, including the forms of the applied techniques. The volume of the master's thesis is 101 pages, which contains 2 figures and 21 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the development of the problem, the purpose and objectives of the research, the object and subject of the research, the main and additional hypotheses are formulated, the methods and the empirical base are specified. The first and second chapters include a review of foreign and domestic literature on the topic of the study. The first Chapter includes a description of intergenerational relationships in the family. The second Chapter includes a description of the structure of hardiness offered by S. Maddi, coping behavior, psychological well-being and locus of control in modern psychology. Conclusions on the first and second chapters are the results of the study of theoretical material. The third Chapter is devoted to the empirical part of the study. It describes the organization and methods studies and the results obtained for all methodologies used: "self-rating anxiety" C. D. Spielberger, "Scale of anxiety" (adapted of Y. L. Hanin), a Hardiness Test by S. Maddi (adapted by D. Leontiev, E. Rasskazova), "Scale psychological well-being," K. Riff (adapted N. N. Lepeshinskiy), the questionnaire "Locus of control" John. Rotter; and a technique designed to study behavioral characteristics: the questionnaire "Coping strategy" R. Lazarus. The Chapter also presents a comparative and correlation analysis of the results of the study. The conclusions of Chapter 3 include the main results of the empirical study. In conclusion, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work, as well as conclusions on the hypotheses put forward, the practical significance of the study and the possible prospects for further development of this problem are described in a generalized form.

holiness and other hauntings

Armstrong, Julia Diane 16 May 2023 (has links)
holiness and other hauntings is a poetry collection that seeks to understand other people. Armstrong uses her poems to track herself back through time to her cousins, her parents, her grandparents, her teachers, and friends. Her work explores queerness and Catholicism, family fraught and family found, love and grief and guilt and ghosts. Her poems lean towards music; internal rhyme, assonance and consonance, alliteration, and long strings of rhymed vowels that sit like pearls in the mouth. Her poems beg forgiveness in shouts; she writes as remembrance, as prayer, as missive, as an engine for hope. / Master of Fine Arts / holiness and other hauntings is a poetry collection.

Filial piety obligations and the lived experience of Korean female caregivers of aging parents-in-law in Canada

Do, Eun Kyeong 18 January 2017 (has links)
This study examined, through a narrative phenomenological framework, the experiences of Korean female caregivers in Canada, and the ways in which filial piety obligations affected their quality of life. The existing literature is scarce on information about caregiving by Korean females in both North America and Canada. Further, caregiving issues regarding caregiving stress have mostly investigated the medical aspects. It was crucial, therefore, to investigate and understand the social aspects of the caregiving experience. Korean daughters-in-law (DILs), who lived with their aging parents-in-law (PILs) in environments profoundly rooted in Confucian values, experienced conflicts with their parents/mothers-in-law. A number of caregiving hardships were identified and categorized according to the following two themes: cultural obligations and direct caregiving practices. Some DILs’ caregiving hardships were heavier when they moved to Canada and adopted a new culture. The findings of this study show that the caregiving practices of these Korean female caregivers in Canada are changing as the DILs have been influenced by their new environment, but the findings also demonstrate that the DILs are still strongly affected by the traditional cultural values in which they were raised. This study investigated their attitudes and behaviours of these women in their caregiving roles by employing a qualitative research design. As little research has been done on immigrant women’s caregiving experience, this study provides an important contribution by examining the lived experience of immigrant women as it is affected by the traditional cultural value of filial piety. / February 2017

Jazykový obraz ženy v časopisecké reklamě v letech 1917-1930 / Linguistic image of woman in the magazine advertising in the yeares 1917 - 1930

Štumpf, Michal January 2011 (has links)
68 14 Resumé in English This study is aimed on the image of women as it was perceived by advertising in magazines between 1917 and 1930. The focal points are lexemes: lady, mistress, housewife, a girl, ma'am, miss, household, parent, cook, mother, daughter, child. Their occurrences are statistically processed in the tables according to selected criteria, for example: whether the lexemes are developed by attribute or not. The obtained data are interpreted in the chapters which are divided according to ad focus on three sections: Decoration, Household, Family relationships. The conclusion is based on all of the data created by the image of women as perceived by contemporary advertising compared to what was required of traditional society. The conclusion of the study, including a shift in social values, is supported by a brief comparison of the results of this work, based on knowledge of the study Language image of women in advertising in the late 19th Century (Štumpf, M., RP, Charles University, 2008).

Pataudgrins, sylves griffues et nains gris : Une étude sur la traduction en français de Ronya fille debrigand d’Astrid Lindgren / A study of the French translation of Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter byAstrid Lindgren

Lilliestam, Susanne January 2017 (has links)
This essay is a translation study from Swedish to French concerning the invented words by Astrid Lindgren in Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter, in particular the swear words, invectives and spirits (invented figures). Our study examines the strategies used by the translator according to Vinay and Darbelnet, the closeness to the source language or the target language and the specific problems when translating a book for children from Swedish to French. Our conclusion is that the strategies sometimes are difficult to encircle and that the indirect strategies are more frequent. We noticed also that the text, concerning these words, is closer to the target language and that there is a replacement of the invented words of more standard words in the target language. Our conclusion is that if it does not exist an identical expression in the target language, it is likely that the translator replaces this expression with a more common one.

The compass of human will in realism and fantasy: a reading of Sister Carrie and The King of Elfand's Daugher

Unknown Date (has links)
As realist and naturalist writers at the turn of the twentieth century adopted a scientific spirit of objectivity, they reflected the emphasis many contemporary scientific studies laid on the forces of the natural world in shaping the character, behavior, and ultimate destiny of man. In this literary mood of "pessimistic determinism," fantasy literature began to experience a resurgence, providing a marked contrast to naturalism's portrayal of the impotence of man to effect change in his circumstances. I examine fantasy's restoration of efficacy to the human will through a study of two representative works of the opposing genres: Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie and Lord Dunsany's The King of Elfland's Daughter. As I demonstrate, the former naturalistic novel emphasizes the impotence of its characters in the face of powerful natural world, while the latter contemporary fantasy novel uniquely showcases man's ability to effect change in his world and his destiny. / by Tracy Stone. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.
