METHOD: Women with postpartum depression were allocated to a brief psychotherapeutic intervention. To evaluate defense style and the alliance, the Defense Style Questionnaire and the Working Alliance Inventory were employed. The main outcome was the final score on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS); anxiety and retention in treatment were also evaluated RESULTS: 59 patients were included; forty-six completed the therapy and 65.4% responded (EPDS<10). Intense use of immature defenses was related to the maintenance of depression and anxiety at endpoint, even when controlled for parity and social class. Results tended to confirm a hierarchy of defense styles. There were no significant correlations with the alliance measures at any sessions. CONCLUSIONS: Intense use of immature defenses was a factor of poor prognosis in psychotherapy, independently of the alliance, which strengthens their status as important variables for treatment selection / Avaliar o impacto dos estilos defensivos no desfecho da psicoterapia breve da depressão pós-parto e a relação dos mesmos com a aliança terapêutica.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jena Hanay Doutorado.pdf: 721081 bytes, checksum: 65f8d839cf686774d38170e56199f048 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-12-18 / Evaluates depression, anxiety, psychopathologic symptoms, alexithymia and defensive style of grade III obese patients, before and after bariatric surgery, as well as estimates the level of association among such variables. Methodological study design was correlational crosssectional type. 65 patients took part in the study (Group 1: surgical candidates vs. Group 2: postoperative patients), mainly females (92,3%), who answered the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the Symptoms Assessment Scale (EAS- 40), and the version in Portuguese of The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-26) and of the Defensive Style Questionnaire (DSQ-40). Gr 1 showed mild anxiety and depression levels and Gr 2 minimum level (respectively, p< 0,001 e p< 0,01). The total average score for EAS- 40 and F2 and F3 (obesity-compulsion and somatization) were higher in Gr 1 when compared to Gr 2 (repetitively, p< 0,005, p< 0,005 e p< 0,001). On TAS, the total average score for F1 (ability to identify and describe feelings and distinguish them from bodily sensations) were higher in Gr 1 than in Gr 2 (respectively, p< 0,01 e p< 0,005). According to DSQ-40, there was a tendency for an immature defensive style in Gr 1 in comparison to Gr 2 (p< 0,02). In relation to the association between the variables and BMI, the correlations were negative for Gr 1 and F2 of TAS (daydreaming, p < 0,05) and for the mature factor of DSQ- 40 and Gr 2 (p < 0,05), which shows a trend towards a more mature and adaptive style in Gr 2. Correlations were positive and significant in relation to immature defenses - acting out (Gr 1: p<0,005 and Gr 2: p<0,05) and in the autistic fantasy in Gr 1 (p<0,05). The results show the psychological status of the participants, who are apt for bariatric surgery and point to a decrease in psychopathological symptoms proportional to weight loss after surgery. Epidemiologia e bioquímica do controle do oídio do meloeiro por silício / Epidemiology and biochemistry of powdery mildew control on melon by silicon

Dallagnol, Leandro José 21 January 2011 (has links)
Silicon (Si) is not considered an essential nutrient of plants, but when it accumulates in the shoots it reduces powdery mildew severity on several species. However, despite this beneficial effect being widely reported in the literature, the mechanisms involved are still little understood. In this study, the effects of both foliar and root applications of potassium silicate, an important soluble source of Si, on the severity of powdery mildew and on the induction of postinfection defense mechanisms of melon were evaluated. Treatment effects were assessed by measuring the epidemics dynamic and its components in both artificially and naturally inoculated plants kept in the greenhouse. Results showed that the area under the disease progress curve was reduced by 65% and 73%, respectively by foliar and root application of potassium silicate, compared to control plants that were not supplied with potassium silicate. This effect accrued from the reduction of the infection efficiency, colony expansion rate, colony area, conidia production per colonized area and the epidemic progress rate. However, root application was more effective than foliar application on both delaying the onset of the epidemic and reducing most epidemic components, except for the infection efficiency. The greater efficiency of potassium silicate in controlling the disease when supplied via roots by irrigation correlated with higher foliar concentrations of Si which induced both a priming effect and increased expression of key defense responses. These phenomena, however, were not observed when potassium silicate was sprayed on leaves. Root supply of Si altered the activity of enzymes involved in the production and catabolism of reactive oxygen species, resulting in the increased activity of superoxide dismutase and reduced activity of catalases mainly in the first 96 hours after inoculation. Root application also primed the activity of peroxidases, 1,3(4)-glucanases, chitinases and the accumulation of phenolic compounds. Lignin concentration also increased in response to inoculation while the concentration of malondialdeide reduced indicating that Si decreased the oxidation of lipids of the plant cell membranes. In contrast, when Si was sprayed on the leaves, only an increase in lignin deposition was observed compared to the control treatment. Thus, it appears that the mechanisms of powdery mildew control in this case are distinct and, according to literature data, could include the formation of a physical-chemical barrier on the cuticle as the result of potassium silicate polymerization. Taken together, the results showed that Si plays an active role in modulating the host defense system, but only when present in the soluble form inside the plant which can be achieved by root uptake. Nevertheless, the effects of potassium silicate reported here allowed concluding that the inclusion of this compound in an integrated management system, mainly if supplied via roots, will render positive effects both on reducing the disease in melon plants and on the environment, in this case through reducing the use of fungicides.

Red alder (alnus rubra) defense mechanisms against western tent caterpillar (malacosoma californicum) defoliation

Boateng, Kennedy 01 May 2019 (has links)
Red alder (Alnus rubra) is a tree species with high economic and ecological importance. It is subject to defoliation during unpredictable, episodic outbreaks of tent caterpillars (Malacosoma spp.) that result in reduced growth, decreased wood production, unsightly appearance and mortality in severe cases. Alder trees are weakened by severe and repeated tent caterpillar defoliation, and this can increase the susceptibility of the trees to other pests, diseases and drought. Repeated attack by tent caterpillars can cause decline in red alder populations, which can have potential negative impacts on the ecological and economic benefits of the species. Evidence from other species has shown that plants produce phytochemicals for defense against herbivores at a cost to growth and reproduction, but the relative magnitude of the cost of allocating available resources to defense depends on the level of the resources, and the plant genotype. The quality of a plant as food for herbivores is influenced by leaf physical and biochemical traits, and these traits change during a growing season or upon attack by herbivores. My research aimed to explore the defense mechanisms of red alder against western tent caterpillars (Malacosoma californicum) and determine the resistance variation among and within red alder populations, and to evaluate red alder available resource (nitrogen) allocation to defense and growth. Bioassay feeding trials were conducted in 2014 and 2015 with western tent caterpillars (WTC) (M. californicum) on twenty red alder clones from ten provenances. Phenology and quality of red alder leaves as food for the defoliators were analyzed to determine if budburst, leaf chemical content, water content or physical traits are major determinants of western tent caterpillars preference for red alder leaves. In another experiment, one-year-old seedlings from 100 half-sib red alder families were treated with two levels of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) in two growing seasons in a common garden. Growth, herbivore defense-related traits and root nodulation were measured and ranked among the plant genotypes and between the two nitrogen (N) treatments. Leaves from the two N treatments and different alder families were also used for bioassay feeding trials with WTC larvae to determine effects of N and genotype on red alder herbivory resistance. In my final experiments, I harvested and analyzed leaves from three-year-old red alder trees from five different families on eight dates from early April to mid-October 2016 to quantify oregonin and total phenolics concentrations, and wound induction experiments were conducted to determine if the concentrations of the chemicals vary during a growing season and upon attack by insects. Alder clones and families differed in percentage leaf area eaten by caterpillars and in leaf defense traits. The concentrations of foliar phenolic compounds negatively correlated with the percentage leaf area eaten by the caterpillars, but the results suggest a threshold, above which the concentration of each of the chemicals appeared to reduce WTC feeding, individually. Particularly, foliar oregonin concentration above 20 % leaf dry weight consistently appeared to reduce feeding by caterpillars. N availability had significant effects on red alder seedling total dry biomass and leaf N concentration. There was a clear trade-off between red alder seedling growth, and content of the phenolic compounds and leaf thickness, which supports the growth-differentiation balanced hypothesis in relation to resource availability. The concentration of oregonin varied during the growing season and there were no significant responses of any of the measured compounds to wounding. The results suggest that red alder foliar oregonin, condensed tannin and total phenolics are constitutive defenses and are not wound-induced. The effects of leaf total phenolic and condensed tannin concentrations on insect herbivory have been documented by past studies but the effects of oregonin concentration in red alder leaves on tent caterpillar feeding is a novel finding. / Graduate / 2020-04-18

A ferida na alma : os doentes de AIDS sob o ponto de vista psicanalítico / The injured soul : AIDS patients under psychoanalytical eyesight

Cedaro, José Juliano 04 July 2005 (has links)
This production, based on the psychoanalytical work, studies the HIV/AIDS phenomenon, from the speech of four AIDS patients, who have been interviewed for three years. The psychoanalytical reference functioned as a methodological and theoretical tool in order to run the interviews, as well as for the reading of the material produced along the meetings with the subjects of the research. The conceptions of the Multiple Fields Theory and the extense clinic by the Brazilian Psychoanalyst Fabio Herrmann have been of great importance, which support the usage of the psychoanalytical method, outside the classical setting, including academic research. This piece of work gets from the assumption of which the pathologies, mainly the chronicle and incurable ones, induce a narcissistic injury over their victims. When it comes to AIDS, this situation would become aggravated by the vulnerability that the disease provokes, by the adverse effects of the medicines and by the social stigmas which are linked to them. The aim of the research was verifying what psychic strategies the patients use in order to face such situation and to try to fix this wound. It was proved that the AIDS patients feel themselves thrown into a field of “angst" [das Ängstlichen] when they realize they are submerged by this disease. The ego reaction to deal the distressing field would provoke an ego splitting (Spaultung), occurring that the frightening reality is able to psychically coexist with the desire of repairing the narcissistic wound and with the indelible mourning by itself. In that case, AIDS is shared in the psychic dynamic of the patient in terms of what that Freud named as das Unheimliche. The ego, thanks to its synthesis power, even though it is grown weak by an outside and merciless force, may be able to face it and keep integrated, although the irreparable losses.

Borderline psychopathology and the defense mechanism test

Sundbom, Elisabet January 1992 (has links)
The main purpose of the present studies has been to develop the Defense Mechanism Test (DM1) for clinical assessment of severe psychopathology with the focus on the concept of Borderline Personality Organization (BPO) according to Kemberg. By relating the DMT and the Structural Interview to each other, the concurrent validity of the concept of Personality Organization (PO) for psychiatric inpatients has been investigated. Two different assessment approaches have been used for this purpose. One has been to take a theoretical perspective as the starting-point for the classification of PO by means of the DMT. The other has been a purely empirical approach designed to discern natural and discriminating patterns of DMT distortions for different diagnostic groups. A dialogue is also in progress between DMT and current research on the Rorschach test in order to increase understanding of borderline phenomena and pathology. The overall results support Kemberg's idea that borderline patients are characterized by specific intrapsychic constellations different from those of both psychotic and neurotic patients. Both the DMT and the Structural Interview provide reliable and consistent judgements of PO. Patients with the syndrome diagnosis Borderline Personality Disorder exhibit different perceptual distortions from patients suffering from other personality disorders. The classic borderline theory is a one-dimensional developmental model, where BPO constitutes a stable intermediate form between neurosis and psychosis. The present results suggest that a two-dimensional model might be more powerful. Hence, the level of self- and object representations and reality orientation might be considered both from a developmental gad an affective perspective across varying forms of pathology. Kemberg suggests that borderline and psychotic patients share a common defensive constellation, centered around splitting, organizing self- and object representations. This view did not find support. The defensive pattem of the BPO patients is significantly different from the PPO defensive pattern. The BPO patients form their self- and object images affectively and thus the self- and object representations would seem to influence the defensive organization and not the other way around. The results have implications for the procedure and the interpretation of the DMT e.g. one and the same DMT picture can discern different kinds of personality; reactions other than the operationalized defense categories in the DMT manual can be valid predictors of PO; some of the DMT defenses described in the manual have to be reconceptualized such as isolation, repression and to some degree denial. Multivariate models are powerful tools for the integration of reactions to DMT into diagnostic patterns. / <p>Diss. Etika a kultura v interakci s obtížnými klienty / Ethics and culture in interaction with difficult clients

DUŠKOVÁ, Helena January 2014 (has links)
In my thesis, I focused on the ethical and cultural dimension of social work, application of ethical principles and choice of attitude by a helping professional when working with a client. Subsequently, I followed changes in application of these ethical principles and changes of attitude in high-strain situations in the contact with a so-called difficult client. Further, I focused on the defence mechanisms which a helping professional chooses to cope with high-strain situations and manage his job well. In the individual chapters of the theoretical parte, by the analysis of scientific literature I described theoretical bases of the professional relationship between a social/health social worker and a klient and I focused on the realization of this relationship and on what it brings the worker in high-strain situations when working with the so-called difficult client. In the empirical part, I set one main goal to find out how social workers react on the ethical level in high-strain situations while interacting with difficult clients. Partial goals were designed to find out what ethical principles social workers apply, what attitudes they choose, which clients they consider difficult and what defence mechanisms they develop to cope with high-strain situations. To reflect these goals, I set one main research question and four partial ones. For the collection of data, I opted for the method of quantitative research and I used the questioning method in the form of a half-structured interview. I chose the set of respondents for my research by the method of simple random sampling. To process the research data, I chose the method of case study. Processing the interviews and analysing them, I found out that social workers in high-strain situations do not change their application of ethical principles. Further, I found out that the choice of attitude in high-strain situations changes and that social workers choose, instead of a partner attitude based on equality, a more or less directive stance. All of the respondents met a difficult client at work and dealing with high-strain situations causes them certain indisposition they have to cope with. The answer to the main research question is thus that on ethical level social workers react in high-strain situation by a shift in the choice of their attitude and solving ethical dilemmas. It was a hostile client that the social workers listed most frequently in the typology of clients. It became evident during the interviews what kind of defence mechanisms social workers choose to be able to cope with high-strain situations. The thesis may provide information to the general public and experts.

Interculturality and internal plurality : intergenerational impacts and topical representation of defense mechanisms and coping strategies

Gaultier, Sydney 28 November 2012 (has links)
Research in intercultural clinical psychology describes the psychic and/or the psychopathological changes incurred by the acculturation process. However, the question arises of how different cultures will interact with each other within the psychological space of the individual. Thus, the meeting of cultures does not only occur within the social field, but also within the psychicological space. The intercultural aspects do not simply refer to an outside reality, but more particularly to a subjective experience. Can we produce a representation of this internal plurality? What would be its contribution in understanding the intercultural domain? To answer these questions, we propose a transversal and interdisciplinary approach that strives to understand how the two social "switches" of the individual operates, that is the superego and the habitus. The modeling of a "plural actor" (Lahire, 2001), in the image of socialization matrices and social spaces to which he belongs, will serve a basis from which the internal plurality of cultures will be addressed. The regulatory mechanisms of the psychic (the defense mechanisms and the coping strategies) will be our indicators. Our study focuses on the comparison between non-immigrant and immigrant individuals (N=497), in function of their geographical and cultural origin, and the degree of immigrant descent. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis according to which an intercultural topic should be integrated in the model of a plural actor. This perspective allows us to provide a clear picture of the impact of multiculturalism as internal plurality, but also to generate a dynamic representation of the effects of immigration on related topics.

It was proved that the AIDS patients feel themselves thrown into a field of “angst” [das Ängstlichen] when they realize they are submerged by this disease.
