Neuropsychological Dysfunction Associated with Dental Office EnvironmentMurry, Joe Mitchell 05 1900 (has links)
Five chemicals indigenous to the dental office environment that may cause toxic effects are formaldehyde, phenol, acrylic, mercury, and nitrous oxide. These chemicals create abnormal stress on physiological and psychological systems of the body resulting in symptomatology and pathology when the body defenses can no longer maintain homeostasis by adaptation. This study demonstrated serious behavioral consequences of chemical and heavy metal exposure. This study provided evidence that a significant percentage of dental office personnel who are exposed to the dental office chemicals show psycho neurological dysfunction. It was concluded that these individuals suffer adverse reactions to the chemicals in their work environment. The problem areas included perceptual motor difficulty in cognitive functioning, concern with bodily functions, despondency, and interpersonal problems.

Previous issue date: 2009-12-17 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Since the Consumer´s Defense Code (CDC - Law n. 8.078) was issued on September 11th, 1990, the number of legal proceedings against health professionals has greatly increased. Such problem and the paucity of researches related to it in the Dentistry literature justify the interest for the subject. The current study aims at reflecting upon the liability of the dentist, under the perspective of the discourse s analyst, by focusing not on the activity context (in the dental office), but on documents of civil lawsuits against dentists. Based on the theoretical-methodological principles of MAINGUENEAU´s discursive Discourse Analysis (interdiscourse primacy; discursive field and space; global semantics of initial petition and refutation discursive positioning), this study analyses how such liability is interpreted by the Plaintiff´s and the Defendant´s lawyers´ argumentation. The research methodology included interviews (PUCSP's Research Ethics Committee Protocol n. 70/2006) with the legal consultant of the S.Paulo Dental Surgeons Association, in order to: i) get information related to the civil lawsuit area; ii) select similar juristic acts, belonging to her own files, since the legal consultant was the dentists´ lawyer in all cases; and iii) collect the selected formal applications. Thus, by crossing the frontiers of the stricto sensu language´s studies and proposing to think about the legal duty of the dentist to inform the patient/consumer in a clear, adequate and appropriate form under the CDC´s heading of Article 14th, a bridge is built between Human Sciences (Discourse Analysis; Law Science), Health Sciences (Dentistry), and the discipline that studies the human activity of work (Ergology). The corpus of analysis is constituted by the initial petition and the correspondent refutation of four indemnity legal actions for physical and moral losses and damages, settled at different Courts of Justice in São Paulo between the years 2001 and 2005. In order to analyze these documents it was taken into account: (a) the constitutive polemic between these two enuncitive positioning´s discourses; and (b) the triple function of the language, in the lawyers´ reported discourses: the language (of the dentist) at work; the language (of the lawyers) as work; and the language (of both lawyers) about the work (of the dentist). The analysis´ results suggest that, when recovering the facts that occurred in the dental office, the lawyers´ argumentation translates discursively the complexity of the dentist´s work activity; and they demonstrate that when a disagreement between dentist and patient occurs, the probability of the establishment of a liability process is always possible to happen because of the language´s non-transparency / Depois da promulgação do Código de Defesa do Consumidor (CDC - Lei nº 8.078, de 11/set./1990), aumentou muito o número de ações legais contra profissionais da área da saúde.

Bioethics, Professional Ethics and Forensic Dentistry are matters of interest for Dentistry, in the patient/professional relationship and in the clinical attendance, among others. This study consists of a quantitative and a qualitative analysis of the teaching profile of the Bioethics, Professional Ethics (or Deontology) and Forensic Dentistry disciplines in the Brazilian Dental Schools. The data were collected by semi-structured questionnaires sent to all Brazilian Dental Schools. The qualitative analysis was based on the analysis of the contents of the open questions, employing the thematic categorization analysis, as advocated by Bardin. The quantitative analysis was based on calculating the absolute and relative frequencies of the answers. Among all the 182 Brazilian Dental Schools, 57 (31.3%) present Bioethics, 100 (54.9%) present Professional Ethics and 121 (66.5%) present Forensic Dentistry in their teaching curricula. The return of questionnaires was 38 (66.7%), 48 (48%) and 61 (50.4%) for Bioethics, Professional Ethics and Forensic Dentistry, respectively. The principal themes broached in the Bioethics discipline are the bioethical dilemmas (76.3%), related mainly to polemical and up-todate questions, like cloning, abortion, organ transplantation and attending the HIV-bearing patient. In the Professional Ethics discipline, the main interest focuses on the Ethical Code for Dentistry (52%) and in Forensic Dentistry it is the Identification (78.7%). As suggestions for improving the teaching of these disciplines were mentioned the interdisciplinary relation and applicability, in the graduation as well as in the post-graduation courses. It was noticed that, in general, the disciplines are treated theoretically (77.8%, 60.4% and 52.2%). La relation de soin à l'épreuve des représentations sociales : enjeux éthiques en orthopédie dento-faciale hospitalière / The conflict of values posed by social representations to the care relationship : ethical issues associated with dentofacial orthopedics in a hospital environmentMano, Marie-Charlotte 23 November 2015 (has links)
A discourse focused on the Other is firmly anchored in medical discourse. But what Other is being spoken about? What identity are we talking about when considering the otherness, recognition and vulnerability of the recipient of care? Whom are we recognising? Here, we will be exploring the relational balance within the patient-carer relationship in the field of dentofacial orthopedics. A structural approach to social representations, using concept maps, will be adopted in order to examine the relationship of the therapeutic partners to the concept of care provision - a symbolic component of the treatment process which is difficult to define explicitly. Introducing the notion of care provision means placing an emphasis on the ethical, technical and political content of the care relationship. The notion of the favourable reception of the patient, a central element of the relationship which is revealed by an analysis of representations based on questionnaires, highlights the role of identity in the contemporary reconfiguration of the care relationship - a hybrid model which combines a modulated form of medical paternalism and comparative emancipation. This original perspective enables us to examine these various value registers, which illustrate and testify to the notion of the individual. This dialectic of sameness and the Other, of the identity and the recognition of the participants, thus gives rise to a debate, simultaneously theoretical, ethical and political, focused on the relational space associated with care.
