Un destin littéraire. Georges Darien / A literary destiny. Georges Darien

Les discours tenus aujourd’hui sur Georges Darien restent, pour une large part, associés à l’anarchisme. Pour en saisir les limites, la thèse remonte aux sources biographiques. La lecture de son œuvre− aussi riche que méconnue− prendra acte d’un moment fondateur : l’expérience des camps disciplinaires, en 1883. A partir de là, les fictions s’inscrivent dans une démarche contestataire. Le destin littéraire devient spéculaire, véritable miroir d’une âme entrée en résistance. Tenant à la fois de Balzac, Vallès ou encore Mirbeau, l’écrivain dénonce et engage sa responsabilité d’auteur. Combinant avec originalité des personnages et des situations, Darien revisite les problématiques de son époque : rapport à la bourgeoisie, à l’argent, aux institutions, à l’individu. A ce titre, sa littérature est un vaste territoire à explorer. Les pratiques d’écriture et les stéréotypies particulières de la « fin de siècle » font l’objet d’une analyse très critique. L’homme de lettres écrit sa contestation sous toutes les formes : roman, poésie, théâtre, pamphlet, journal, discours. Enfant perdu de la bourgeoisie, livré à la Grande Muette, assiégé par des visions cauchemardesques ; Darien a de quoi nourrir sa résistance scripturaire. Rien ne manquera à la parole libertaire qu’il exerce. Bagnes et armées connaîtront une satire des plus violentes. Famille et instances tutélaires délivreront des idéologies souvent ridicules. Nations et littérateurs donneront l’occasion de discuter la place de l’artiste et de forger un individualisme féroce. Aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, avec la lecture des œuvres d’Achille Tatius et Héliodore d’Émèse, auteurs grecs des premiers siècles de l’ère chrétienne, les auteurs espagnols redécouvrent un genre particulier qui sera qualifié tantôt de romand’aventures, tantôt de roman byzantin. Tant l’appellation de roman que la qualification de byzantin sont fautives puisqu’il s’agit en fait de récits poétiques ou en prose antérieurs à la fin du IVe siècle, c’est-à-dire antérieurs à ce qu’il est convenud’appeler historiquement l’ère byzantine. Pour notre part, nous retiendrons l’appellation de roman néo-hellénistique ou roman néo-grec espagnol – voire « roman baroque », à l’instar de Georges Molinié1 – pour qualifier le nouveau genreromanesque créé à partir de ces récits. Nous voyons dans ce genre le développement d’une littérature en adéquation avec les exigences éthiques et esthétiques de l’« utile dulci » horacien. Influencé par le contexte politico-religieux de la Contre-Réforme, le roman néo-grec espagnol ou roman baroque expose de manière plus ou moins patente le thème de la diatribe à propos du libre arbitre et de la prédestination. Le rôle joué au cœur de ces romans par la Providence et le Destin, en particulier sous leur forme emblématique, semble empreint de l’enseignement des dogmes catholiques défendus lors du Concile de Trente. Dans les quatre ouvrages du corpus (El peregrino en su patria de Lope de Vega, Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda de Miguel de Cervantès, Historia de Hipólito y Aminta de Francisco de Quintana, El Criticón de Baltasar Gracián), le problème du déterminisme et celui du salut sont de nombreuses fois soulevés. Cela se produit soit dans des discussions entre les personnages, soit dans le cours même de l’intrigue par l’apparition de phénomènes de prédiction astrologique ou autre mettant en cause les notions de Fortune et de Destin. De la même façon, les personnages, par leur manière d’être et d’agir, évoquent la notion de libre arbitre soulignant ainsi l’importance des actes qu’ils accomplissent pour assurer leur salut. / In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, thanks to the writings of Achilles Tatiusand Heliodorus of Emesa, two Greek authors who lived the first centuries of the Christian era, the Spanish writers rediscover a new particular genre. Those books are either labeled as adventure novels or Byzantine novels. Both the terms “novel” and “Byzantine” are inadequate since those books deal with storylines in prose or in verse dating back to the end of the fifth century, that is to say prior to what is commonly and historically termed as the Byzantine era. We will stick to the expressions “Spanishand Greek novel” or “Baroque novel” as taken up by Georges Molinié in order to label this new fictional genre in which we can perceive the development of a literature more in terms with the ethic and a esthetic standards of the Horacian « utile dulci ».Influenced by the political and religious frame of the Counter Reformation, the Spanish and Greek novel or « Baroque novel » exposes in an underlying way the theme of the diatribe about free will and predestination. The role played byProvidence and Fate in those novels, in particular under their emblematic form, is revealing of the Catholic dogmas defended during the Council of Trent. In the four books of the corpus (El peregrino en su patria by Lope de Vega, Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda written by Miguel de Cervantes, Historia deHipólito y Aminta by Francisco de Quintana, Baltasar Gracian’s El Criticón) the issues of determinism and salvation are being raised. This occurs either during thedialogues, or in the development of the plot through the appearance of phenomena of astrological prediction or of other natures dealing with the notions of Fortune and Destiny. In the same way, the characters – through the way they act and behave –evoke the notion of free will, thus underlining the importance of the actions they accomplish in order to secure their salvation.

Le Jugendschriften di Hegel rappresentano un ingresso privilegiato nella comprensione dell’intero sistema hegeliano. Nonostante la critica le abbia per molto tempo considerate carte giovanili dense di un afflato romantico e mistico destinato a essere sostanzialmente abbandonato nell’impianto speculativo-razionale della maturità, questa ricerca intende illustrare, in questi scritti, la formazione statu nascenti degli assi fondamentali del suo pensiero. Da questa ricognizione emerge il ruolo sistematico dell’indagine hegeliana sulle strutture portanti della forma religiosa, colta soprattutto nell’Aufhebung dello spirito della Legge nella nuova legge dello Spirito. In relazione a tale assunto ermeneutico, sono sottoposte a una disamina analitica il rapporto dialettico fra legge e amore, il contrasto fra spirito e lettera, il concetto di destino, la nozione di positività, il senso escatologico del tempo, il progetto di una nuova vitalità religiosa per la sua epoca. La ricerca intende illuminare la connessione di queste figure, e in particolare quelle di legge e di amore, che costituiscono i luoghi fondamentali della prima elaborazione della dialettica, con lo sfondo teologico delle Lettere di Paolo, che il giovane Hegel studia e analizza nel suo periodo di formazione a Stoccarda, a Tubinga e a Francoforte. / Hegel’s Jugendschriften represent a privileged way in the understanding of the whole Hegelian speculative system. Many critics have considered them for a long time as juvenile papers dense of romantic and mystical afflatus, destined to be substantially abandoned in the speculative-rational works of his maturity. This research aims at illustrating the development of the fundamental axis of Hegel’s thought in the philosopher’s early writings. From this recognition emerges the systematic role of the investigation into the religious form, perceived above all in the abolishment (Aufhebung) of the spirit of the Law in the law of the Spirit and in its preserving. With regard to this hermeneutical assumption, the research examines analytically the dialectical relationship between law and love, the Letter/Spirit contrast, the concept of destiny, the notion of positivity, the eschatological meaning of time, the project of a new religious vitality for his epoch. This study aims at enlightening the connection of these figures and, above all, of the categories of law and love, which constitute the basis for the elaboration of the dialectics, with the theological background of Paul’s Epistles, which Hegel had studied during his education in Stuttgart, Tubingen and Frankfurt.

“Beautiful powerful you” : an analysis of the subject positions offered to women readers of Destiny magazine

Women's magazines are popular cultural forms which offer readers representations intended to advise women on how to work towards and achieve idealised femininities. They perform such a function within the wider socio-historical context of gender relations. In a country such as South Africa, where patriarchal gender relations have historically been structured to favour men over women and masculinity over femininity, the representation of femininity in contemporary women's magazines may serve to reinforce or challenge these existent unequal gender relations. Informed by a feminist poststructuralist understanding of the gendered positioning of subjects through discourse, this study is a textual analysis that investigates the subject positions or possible identities offered to readers of Destiny, a South African business and lifestyle women's magazine. Black women, who make up the majority of Destiny's readership, have historically been excluded from the formal economy. In light of such a background, Destiny offers black women readers, through its representations of well-known business women, possible identities to take up within the white male dominated field of business practice. The magazine also offers 'lifestyle content', which suggests to readers possible ways of being in other areas of social life. Through a method of critical discourse analysis, this study critically analyses the subject positions offered to readers of Destiny, in order to determine to what extent the magazine's representations of business women endorse or confront unequal gender relations. The findings of this study are that Destiny offers women complex subject positions which simultaneously challenge and reassert patriarchy. While offering readers positions from which to challenge race based gender discrimination – a legacy of the apartheid past – the texts analysed tend to neglect non-racially motivated gender prejudice. It is concluded that although not comprehensively challenging unequal gender relations, the magazine whittles away some tenets of patriarchy.

This is a paper about the process of creating meaning in speeches held by president Bush after the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001. People need tools to orient and understand the surrounding world. They need to create a meaningful orientation in a chaotic world. Some meaning is favoured due to the prevailing social structures. Thru language discourses are produced that helps us understand how the world is constructed. The national state is a discourse that make the world understandable. The discourse create a natural perception of the world as divided into nations. A grand narrative is a story that explain incomprehensive occurrences in society. In times of war these stories become crucial. It is necessary to demonise the enemy to legitimise ones actions. In the US a myth of origin is built around the concept of Manifest Destiny. The myth constitutes that the nation has a unique mission from God to save the rest of the world. In the story retelling the events of September 11th president Bush presents a solution to the problem of terrorists threatening to divide the nation. The nation is constantly on the brink of falling apart. The solution is unity. President Bush recreate the story of USA and the terrorist attacks in a meaningful way, and portrays the nation as a natural entity. The enemy is the evil force that unites the nation.

Le but de ce mémoire est d´étudier le roman de Fatou Diome, Le ventre de l´Atlantique. Diome lance un message aux jeunes Africains : elle les enjoint à s´assumer et à vivre dans la dignité, ce qui joue un rôle important dans l´oeuvre. Le thème que nous traitons est la poétique du mirage. Diome construit un mirage autour de l´immigration et nous montrons quels procédés elle utilise pour faire passer son message. Notre travail est composé de deux grandes parties : la construction du mirage et la destruction du mythe et d’une partie intermédiaire consacrée à l’entre-deux mondes : l’océan Atlantique que l’auteure personnifie en lui attribuant un ventre. / The purpose of this memoir is to study the work of Fatou Diome, The Belly of the Atlantic. Diome sends a message to young Africans: to take responsibility and dignity play an important role in the work. The theme we will deal with is the aesthetics of mirage. She is building a mirage around immigration and we will show what she is doing to get her message across. Our work is composed of two main parts: The construction of the mirage and the destruction of the myth and an intermediate part devoted to the in-between worlds: the Atlantic Ocean that the author personifies by attributing it a belly.

It is common to find in their public squares and monuments statues of military figures, in addition to reserve specific days to honor them, military parades and ceremonies are displayed in various regions of the country and numerous film productions are performed representing the U.S. involvement in world conflicts. It is felt that the war is part of its fundamental characteristics. Seeking to understand the aspects that have built this tradition and thus marked the history of the United States military interventions around the world, without limiting ourselves to explanations that emphasize only the imperialist interests, but taking into account ideological and dogmatic aspects, we reach a ideology formulated in the nineteenth century, in order to justify the U.S. right to intervene in another nation: the ideology of Manifest Destiny. The three ideas that form the three show Manifest Destiny of American beliefs that are part of their national identity and profoundly marked its history: Puritanism, democracy and capitalism. To peer into the permanence of these three beliefs motivating the U.S. military interventions in the XXI century and still seek mainly new elements that enrich our historical understanding of the American society in his belligerent relations with other regions of the world, analyze imagery of a document period, the film Black Hawk Down (Black Hawk Down, Hidley Scott, 2001), which refers to U.S. military intervention in Somalia in 1993 and eventually present the vision of its directors on the subject. É comum encontrar em suas praças públicas estátuas e monumentos de figuras militares, além de reservarem dias específicos para homenageá-los; desfiles e cerimônias militares são exibidos em diversas regiões do país e inúmeras produções cinematográficas são realizadas representando a participação norte-americana em conflitos mundiais. Percebe-se que a guerra faz parte de suas características fundamentais. Buscando entender os aspectos que construíram tal tradição e, consequentemente, marcaram a história dos Estados Unidos com intervenções militares por todo o mundo, sem nos limitarmos a explicações que ressaltam apenas os interesses imperialistas, mas levando em consideração aspectos dogmáticos e ideológicos, chegamos a uma ideologia formulada no século XIX, com o objetivo de justificar o direito norte-americano de intervir em outra nação: a ideologia do Destino Manifesto. Madame Bovary et Rides sur les eaux dormantes : deux destins de femmes : étude interculturelle / No title

Aussitôt après que les œuvres de Gustave Flaubert ont été traduites en chinois, elles ont tout de suite suscité une grande attention de la part des lecteurs chinois. Ses pensées philosophiques, son objectivité et son exactitude dans l’écriture ont provoqué une résonance dans les milieux lettrés chinois d’alors et ont influencé profondément leurs écrits. Le traducteur-romancier chinois, Li Jieren, qui fut le premier traducteur du roman Madame Bovary, avoue qu’il s’est beaucoup inspiré du style de Flaubert présent dans ce roman. En 1935, dix ans après sa première traduction de Madame Bovary, il a commencé la rédaction de son chef-d’œuvre Rides sur les eaux dormantes, qui est depuis considéré par les milieux critiques chinois comme Madame Bovary en Chine. Nous pouvons constater une similarité surprenante entre les deux héroïnes selon différents aspects. Mais on ne peut tout de même pas apparenter le roman de Li Jieren à une réécriture du roman français, car hormis certains points communs, on observe aussi de nombreuses divergences sur la conception des deux femmes, et en particulier dans leurs destinées. La présente thèse est consacrée à l’étude des raisons expliquant les dissemblances de dénouement, dans l’histoire de chacune des héroïnes. Premièrement au niveau du contenu du roman, les raisons se basant sur les éléments de différenciation des deux femmes et sur leur condition sociale ; puis, sur le plan de l’auteur, les raisons sont abordées sous l’angle interculturel, telles que les objectifs d’écriture, les choix littéraires ainsi que la conception de vie de Gustave Flaubert et de Li Jieren. / As soon as the works of Gustave Flaubert were translated into Chinese, Chinese readers immediately paid great attention to them. His philosophical thoughts, objectivity and accuracy in writing caused a resonance in Chinese literary circles of the time and profoundly influenced their writings. Chinese translator and novelist, Li Jieren, who was the first translator of Madame Bovary, admitted he was much inspired by the style of Flaubert in this novel. In 1935, ten years after the first translation of Madame Bovary, he began writing his masterpiece Ripples across stagnant water which has been considered by Chinese critics as the Chinese Madame Bovary. Astonishing similarities can be noticed between the two main characters from various aspects. Despite these similarities, Li Jieren’s novel is not just a simple rewriting of the French novel, for there are also many differences in the perspectives of the two women and especially in their fate. This thesis is focusing on the reasons that can explain the major differences in the outcome of each heroine’s story. First within the content of both novels, reasons based on elements differentiating the two women and on their social class. Then, studying at the author’s level, we will look at reasons from a cross-cultural perspective, such as the writing objectives, literary choices and living concepts of Gustave Flaubert and Li Jieren.

'Fate and Destiny in The Sun Is Also a Star' – The Features of Narration in the Novel and the Filmscript

In this paper, I analyze and compare the novel The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon with the filmscript by Tracy Oliver for the 2019 movie adaptation. First, I demonstrate how the narrative in The Sun Is Also a Star deals with the literary ideas of fate and destiny and how scholars have defined the concepts. Secondly, I argue that the filmscript is a literary text that can be equated to the novel in a literary analysis of their narrative features. I claim that the narrative features of the novel and the filmscript embody fate and destiny in different ways because of the differences in their narrative situations and thought representations. I argue that the narrative situation of the novel, with its authorial narrator and narrative levels, embodies a relationship between fate and destiny as different perspectives are put into focus in the narration. However, the filmscript embodies these concepts as distinct because the narrative situation of the heterodiegetic narrator does not represent the same connectedness. I then maintain this argument as the filmscript in its thought representation and replacement of it with images and speech representation continues to portray the concepts as separate. In contrast, the thought representation of the novel embodies the relationship between the concepts because the thoughts represent connectedness and cause and effect. In my concluding remarks, I look at possible areas of future research.
